Dissent on McCain's enviro panel

SANTA BARBARA, CA -- Usually McCain's panel discussions feature a stage full of experts in a given field telling the Arizona senator how great his proposals would be for the country. But at today's discussion on energy at the Museum of Natural History here, one panelist didn't get the memo.

VIDEO: In a speech in California, John McCain says nothing is more urgent than regaining our energy security.

Michael Feeney, the executive director of the land trust for Santa Barbara County and a professional land conservationist, took issue with some of McCain's environmental policies, accusing both McCain and fellow panelist Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of being too willing to compromise on environmental standards in devising energy solutions.

"I've heard both of the elected officials here [today] say in various forms and others say that we need to solve our energy and our national security and our economic security problems without compromising or stepping back from our environmental standards," Feeney began. But he then gave several examples of proposals that McCain supports that -- in his view -- would compromise the advances this country has made in cleaning up the air and "protecting land for future generations."

"I don't understand how it's not compromising our environmental standards to propose a crash program to build more nuclear power plants when the industry has not complied with the federal law that requires there to be safe disposal for the radioactive waste," Feeney said, alluding to McCain's proposal to put the country on a path to building 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030.

Feeney also took issue with McCain's controversial proposal to lift the moratorium on offshore oil exploration: "It makes me nervous to think about those who are proposing to drain America's offshore oil and gas reserves as quickly as possible in the hopes of driving down the price of gasoline, because I think when you look at the good sources of information, were we to open up the California coast or the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, it would be 12, 15, maybe 20 years before those resources came online and got to full productions."

Adding that some research shows that drilling in ANWR would only "reduce our dependence on foreign oil from 70% to 67%," Feeney added, "I'm not sure most Americans would think that's really worth the price of admission."

McCain listened respectfully to Feeney's comments and when he was finished the only topic that the candidate took issue with was Feeney's condemnation of nuclear power.

"My friend the technology is there," McCain said on dealing with spent nuclear fuel. "The Europeans do it. I mean it's safe, it's being done, so to think that that is going to require some pain on the American people economically when the Europeans, 80% of the French electricity is generated by nuclear power. They're doing fine."

Clean air or MTV libs. Your choice.
Apparently Michael Feeney won't be invited back to a McFossil panel very soon. Wonder if he's an Obama supporter? I'm glad he challenged the old man!
FIRST READ: you've had some calls this a.m. to list your policies re: postings, rules, etc. That would be interesting. The main problem, though, which has been complained about over and over on this blog is that the posts are not updated quickly. It is frustrating, regardless of your position, to take time to post and then they never show up.  Perhaps, it would be helpful if you stated a post close time so people won't keep adding things that are never going to be shared with others.
Feeney, you rock!

I think it's telling that McCain cannot respond to criticism while on stage.  He certainly brought out no new facts or compelling proof that his course was the right one.  When he has a "town hall" he is surrounded by supporters!

All this does is show that Obama needs to get on that stage with this man and let the American people see them spar over policy.

I can't wait.

Liberal wimps, worried about damage to Mother Earth.  We'll just slap a bunch of makeup on the trollop and it'll be fine
Yeah, but where does the nuclear waste go?

That's the plan that needs to be solid before ANYthing is built.
Interesting that McCain couldn't muster a defense for off-shore drilling or the opening of ANWR...

Did he need his teleprompter for those issues?

And yet Norway, with its pristine fjords, drills for oil just off its coast. No pollution. Norway also manages to export their oil for profit too. And Japan and  France manage not to melt a hole to the center of the Earth with all their brand new nuclear plants. But the US can't do these things too?

Some people, mostly on the Left, are selling the US short.
So that's the only thing the Europeans do right?  How about their healthcare?  I truely do wish he would stop calling people "my friends" in the baby talk voice.  #1 turn-off.
D'oh!  Damn it Charlie, you were supposed to vet(plant) this entire panel.  We can't have experts actually telling the truth and exposing my terrible ideas as the pander and gimmickry that they are.  Somebody might hear this and then the jig will be up.  Why do you think that I don't want a panel of economists to look at my gas-tax proposal.--Sen. John McCain

If your family is broke, you don't put your sister or daughter out on the streets to prositute.

We need to do this the right way, not the easy way.  Lets work on getting hydro, wind, and solar power rolling....Algae bio fuels, and fuel cell technology.

We have a whole area in the southwest called death valley that would be great for generating solar power.

I got an idea, why don't they pass a bill in congress that requires that all goverment vehicles (like those huge SUV's they use for presidental motorcades) be hybrid or fuel cell driven?  What about our Buses?  Vancouver has electric/fuel cell buses right now...and it's wonderful.

Spend the billions here, on us.
BOOO YAAAAHHH  !!!

Reality sets in.
I mean sometimes wrong is wrong.. no matter what your party affiliation is.. I guess not all repubs just fall in line like good little soldiers..

Seems like the Great McCain has a problem within his party too... In the words of Pat Buchanan.."what's wrong with this guy?"  Why don't repubs want to follow him.. Lets see the media belabor this point about McCain.. Oooops I forgot they won't because he still has his "GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD".
Gosh, another negative article about McCain.  What a shocker from the I Love Obama network!
I heard somewhere yesterday a brilliant analogy for the oil drilling issue: It's like looking for change in the cushions of your couch when you're six months behind on your mortgage payment.

I like how McCain addressed only the nuclear power question, leaving the other issues raised by Sweeney unanswered.  What a hack.
Love it when McCain starts off with "My Friend".  When I think about it, it seems that we should have been having these discussions 8 years ago.  If, 8 years ago we were working to solve these issues, we would have some programs in place and other solutions about to go on line.  Instead we initiated a war with Iraq, squndered millions of dollars in guns, only to let the butter sit on the table to melt. (guns vs butter)  Now we are in economic trouble with regard to housing and energy. Straight talk is that we will be saddled with these issues for several years to come. The next POTUS will face more issues, domestic and abroad, than anytime in the past. We will need a young, energetic, very intelligent leader who deal with these issues.
Obama/Biden 08
Knowing the Bush Crime Family they probably have sold secrets to OBL on how to attack us. This wiil ensure a win for McWar and the GOP this election!

People have to remeber McWar is cold, he is cold in his heart and his soul! You have to be cold droping Napalm on women and children. You have to be cold to do those kind of things to womwn and children.

Not the type of president I want.

jmp - Northern MN says: Yeah, but where does the nuclear waste go?

We were thinking northern Minnesota. Plus it will help take the edge off your cold winters, so we're looking at it as a win-win.
So why aren't McSame's new oil buddies using their existing 10,000 oil permits on their 68 million acres of already leased land for drilling?

McGeriatric is so far out of touch with reality it's now become funny.

Some fun facts for the Hummer-driving McFossil supporters...

*Drilling on federal lands has steadily increased since the 1990s

*Drilling permits have gone from 3,802 five years ago to 7,561 in 2007

*Oil and gas companies have shown that they cannot keep pace with the rate of drilling permits (so opening the Gulf and ANWR would help how, exactly?)

*Although permits have gone up, the price of gas has ALSO gone up, refuting the idea that more drilling will automatically reduce prices

*The Bureau of Land Management has issued 28,776 permits to drill on public land; yet, only 18,954 wells were actually drilled (a difference of 9822)

*Of the 47.5 million acres of on-shore federal lands that are currently being leased by oil and gas companies, only about 13 million acres are actually in production

*Offshore, only 10.5 million of the 44 million leased acres are currently producing oil or gas

*According to the Minerals Management Service, of all the oil and gas believed to exist on the Outer Continental Shelf, 82% of the natural gas and 79% of the oil is located in areas that are currently open for leasing

*Nearly 91 million acres are currently open to leasing in the Arctic region of Alaska, including onshore and offshore lands. Oil and gas companies have leased only 11.8 million of the 91 million acres.
McCain wants government to set energy example

Well lets see; McExxon how many oil lobbyist funding your campaign?

Are you going to set an example?

First of all.....huh?

Secondly.....What drugs are you currently on?
<< Igot an idea, why don't they pass a bill in congress that requires that all goverment vehicles  ...>>

Thats it! What were we thinking? Lets pass some laws! We should get bill through that says we should get 100 mpg on our gas. We should be 100% wind/solar powered by 2009. And while we at it, lets pass a law that everyone is supposed to be happy! Bush could never veto that one. We'll call it the Happy Act of 2008.
--- Ther will be no DISENNT when OBAMMA wins ---

Just like Germany in the '30s.
McDrillherenowtherelater, while your comment is antithetical to what I believe, that made me laugh out loud.  Good one.
don't conservatives usually jump on people who try to compare America to Europe?  Remember "freedom fries"?
Michael Feeney is speaking common sense!

Right now, don't know how anyone else feels about this, but I'm having trust issues regarding the routine maintenance of levees, bridges and cranes let alone 45 new nuclear power plants. eek!
The solution for the nuclear waste, bury it in the backyard of comment poster, "McDrillherenowtherelater" then follow his/her suggestion to, "We'll just slap a bunch of makeup on the trollop and it'll be fine"

I'm getting so sick of hearing about France when talking about nuclear power.   France is roughly the size of TEXAS.  You simply can't compare.  For the US to get 80% of our power from nuclear we'd have to build 700 NEW reactor sites.   We'd need 3 "Yucca Mountain" dump sites.

Oh... and there simply isn't the Uranium out there for that many sites.  And lets not forget about the horrible environmental damage that occurs mining Uranium.  Or the serious security issues that we'd be facing trying to protect 700+ nuclear facilities.

Geothermal, solar, biomass, and wind are the way to go.

Drilling technology can now allow us to put a geothermal plant anywhere in the country.  The temperature 4 miles down is 600°F anywhere in the country.  Water is pumped down one shaft and returns as high pressure steam out the other.  It's already being done in California in an operational power plant.

New solar polymers have been created that drastically increase the output of panels at a far lower cost.  They are near full scale production.

There are numerous wind turbines available, including a new design that can be used on the tops of buildings in cities where conventional windmills won't work.  They are helical in design and can turn no matter which direction the wind blows, even if its swirling (which hurts normal windmills).

Biomass... tons of options.  There are now facilities that are using algae to create hydrogen by adjusting the photosynthesis process (to emit hydrogen instead of oxygen), using a form of yeast to break down organic waste into petroleum (yes, the bacterea excrete petroleum), and a high temperature hydrolysis process that can turn various types of organic waste and even plastics into petroleum, methane, and other fuel components.

It's all out there... it just needs to be pushed to a national agenda.
FIRST READ: use some courtesy please (Sent Tuesday, June 24, 2008 2:56 PM)

AMEN!

In regards to this article...I STILL say that we are smart enough in this country to do both - solve our energy issues without destroying the planet.  Why does it have to be one or the other?

My question is why does it take 15-20 years (last I heard) to set up a drilling operation?  Also, why am I not hearing about North Dakota?  Didn't they just find an oil supply there?
Hey, John your right...come to think of it I COULD use a third nipple.  Do I get a tax break if you store some of that nuke waste in my yard?  You repubs are sooooo good with taxes, budgets and stuff.
It's amazing... NOW John McCain wants to emulate the FRENCH?!?! Seriously, does he think that's going to go over well with the idiots in his party that wanted to change everything French to "freedom?"

C'mon, who's for building Freedom Nuclear Plants?
And yet Norway, with its pristine fjords, drills for oil just off its coast. No pollution. Norway also manages to export their oil for profit too. And Japan and  France manage not to melt a hole to the center of the Earth with all their brand new nuclear plants. But the US can't do these things too?

Some people, mostly on the Left, are selling the US short.
Pratel Wallis, NYC
******

That's because in Norway and Japan, those things are not done by the LOWEST bidder or cut safety corners to appease shareholders.  In the US we do.  Nor is the US willing to spend the extra money to upgrade and ensure safety.  It's all about the $$$
I admit I only caught part of McCain's speech but what I saw was very disconcerting. I was stunned at the level of unpreparedness/unprofessionalism.  I fully expect any speaker to occasionally refer to notes or cue cards, but he was staring down at the speech reading directly from it, only occasionally looking up and out at the audience!  I can't believe I haven't heard anyone else mentioning this.  I expect to see more from college students presenting an honors thesis and this man is running for president of our country?  Very worried in MA.
[McCain listened respectfully to Feeney's comments and when he was finished the only topic that the candidate took issue with was Feeney's condemnation of nuclear power.]
--The Democratic posters here can bluster all they wish, but this is the character of the person of whom they are running against.  They need to understand his strengths in addition to deriding his weaknesses.

It seems low-class to me for this Feeney character to voice his opinion in a matter to make such a scene.  John McCain seems more than happy to listen to someone's or a panelist's/advisor's concerns in private.  Doing so publicly seems over-the-top, but that's merely my opinion.

--I really don't think that the majority of people are 'for the environment' to the degree that it adversely affects their pocketbooks.  If the liberals think their arguments will fly, they don't have a pulse on the American people (no wonder they lose).

I tend to be much more pessimistic about our development of alternative energy sources that will separate us from oil dependence (I'm still waiting for that flying car).  Yes, we may be hurting a little now, but it's nothing compared to the pain we will feel in the future.  I think that not drilling is an investment in helping our country withstand the greater economic hurtle/pain in the future when the world's supply finally begins to wind down.  Investing in our future national security is well-worth it, and I've not doubt that we will get past this minor turbulence.
Looks like another republican will be getting off the Stray Talk Express at the next stop!!!

Freeney is the smartest man in the McCain campaign!

Arnold Schwarzenegger, I have admired you for the hero characters you played in your movies, usually one that would take the heat and the pain to do human some good causes.  But here, in reality, you just disappointed me by flip-floping and supporting John McCain for destroying our environment and thus the future of our homes.

We Californian rather take some temporary pain and heat of the high gas price to secure the safety of our land.  California is in high risks of earthquakes.  Who of your Republicans can guaranty that, in case of a quake, the nuclear power plan and the oil drill offshore won't leak?
Maybe McCain does not get that it's not that enviornmentalists are against using nuclear energy, it's whether or not the industry will have stricter standards on getting rid of the waste. Does anyone know what France's (or other Euro countries that use nuclear energy)policy is on disposal of waste? from what I hear the Europeans have hihger enviornmental standards than we do!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

Didn't get the Memo!??  LOL!

McBush is a MESS!!  His OWN PEOPLE sound like . . . like OBAMA's people!

LOL!  LOL!  GTFOH!!  WTF!

LOL!  This is toooooo funny!

The McFossil didn't even know what to say . . . wow.
McCain's policy is to offer the dumb voters a feel-good placebo.  Forget the fact that his solutions  don't work.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com
If they could bottle all the hot air in that place there would be no energy shortage.
I don't care how much sense your(Demo's) plan makes when it comes to energy, I refuse to let the facts get in the way of my opinion. Quit tellin' me that out of all of the offshore areas that oil companies are allowed to drill, only 10% is being utilized(ie, oil companies are not working to capacity), we should allow them more water rights so they have more space not to drill.
Why don't you Dems love america and god? If my Maw and Paw get themselves a devorce, would they still be considered brother and sister?
McCain has been in the Senate forever and has done nothing significant to help the environment. How can anyone be fooled by this fool?

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
We are all for more nukes...lets see how many republicans use nimby to prevent it though...what they are really saying is they want to pollute your backyard and send the energy via wire to their backyards...

Psssssssssst...its kind of like when republicans claim they are the party of security but their kids won't serve to protect us...
McCain really has been all over the place lately. While I understand his desire for more nuclear power, the panelist was correct in his observation. McCain seems to often gloss over essential details in order to get his talking points out in the media. Akin to throwing darts on the wall.
DV, CA: That's because in Norway and Japan, those things are not done by the LOWEST bidder.

The lowest bidder sent men to the moon. Haven't seen any Chinese or Rooskis there yet either. Trust me, capitalism works.
"The American people will never knowingly
adopt Socialism. But under the name of
'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of
the Socialist program, until one day
America will be a Socialist nation,
without knowing how it happened."
OH SNAP!! Nice job by the panel vetters!
