Obama: Passing the plate for Hillary

Posted: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 9:08 AM by Mark Murray

“Obama asked members of his finance team Tuesday to help Hillary Rodham Clinton pay off at least $10 million of the debt from her failed White House bid. In an afternoon teleconference with his top fundraisers, Obama asked them to ‘do what they could do’ to help Clinton, according to a Democrat familiar with the call.”

The New York Post’s headline: “Passing plate for Hill.”

VIDEO: When push comes to shove, will Bill and Hillary Clinton unite with Barack Obama? Lisa Caputo, her former White House press secretary, talks to TODAY's Meredith Vieira.

The AP on Bill Clinton’s one-line endorsement of Obama: “Former President Bill Clinton, who has been noticeably reticent in his backing for Barack Obama, finally offered his endorsement yesterday, issuing a one-sentence statement through a spokesman.”

It looks like Obama survived his Hollywood fundraiser without anything embarrassing taking place.

He raised nearly $5 million at the event. The guest list included actor Jennifer Beals; Sugar Ray Leonard; Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am, who created two music videos for Obama during the primary season; Singer Seal performed two songs; Don Cheadle; and Dennis Quaid.

The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus unloads on Obama's decision to opt out of the federal campaign finance system. "What's galling is Obama's effort to portray himself through this entire episode as somehow different from, and purer than, the ordinary politician. Different might have been coupling the announcement with a self-imposed limit on the size of donations. Different might have been -- it could still be -- taking the big checks but acknowledging that, since bundlers will be bringing in even bigger hauls, disclosure should be adjusted accordingly, to reveal not only who raised $200,000 but also who brought in $500,000, who $1 million.”

“Obama's not the first politician to break a promise. He may be the first to do so in the guise of John Hancock, exuberantly signing the Declaration."

Obama called for tougher international action and tighter US sanctions against Zimbabwe, and chided the South African government for not doing enough to resolve the political crisis in the neighboring country.

The AP profiles Sen. Claire McCaskill and her effect on the Obama campaign, including her urging Obama to campaign in rural areas, something Kerry did little of.

Regarding his speech on religion and policy two years ago -- criticized by Focus on the Family head James Dobson -- Obama said: “the speech made the argument that people of faith, like himself, ‘try to translate some of our concerns in a universal language so that we can have an open and vigorous debate rather than having religion divide us.’ Obama added, "I think you'll see that he [Dobson] was just making stuff up, maybe for his own purposes."

And what’s in your iPod? “Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod. ‘I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.’”

he's going to need that money for the General.  Let Clinton pay off her own debt, she's the one who mismanaged her campaign into debt.  Let her solve it with a 3 am call to some millionaire.
"It looks like Obama survived his Hollywood fundraiser without anything embarrassing taking place."  It looks like First read wrote it. Get off the negative crap.  And speaking of negative, get Pat Buchanan off Hardball and mSNBC. He was embarrassing last night. That's embarrassing!
I agree with not paying off her debt.  The woman went in the the hole on her own.  She knew there was no way to win and yet kept spending money she didn't have.  Um, most citizens would be in jail right now if we did what she has done.  Let her eat her contributions and then have her pay off the people she owes.  Tough luck Hillary, you should have been smarter about how to spend money and also noticed the writing on the wall a lot sooner.  It's not our fault you were so wrapped up in your own self worth that you couldn't see what was happening around you.  Not to mention your campaign was run by a bunch of egotistical pigs who were rude and nasty and acted like a bunch of republican slimeballs.
I recently voted for Liebermann when he ran independently last time. I am SORRY I did.  With him too busy following McCain around like a puppy dog, he could have done that as a  private citizen but with Dodd running himself recently and moving his family to IOWA for a while, WHO is representing CONN in Washington?  I should have voted for Lamont and I will not make THAT mistake again.
Could Barack pass the plate and help pay for my mortgage?
Obama is systematically reorganizing the DNC and the party in general. He has always said that this would be done. Protecting the financial health of Sen. Clinton is just one part of that process.

The Campaign Finance non-issue continues to befuddle the Republicans and some pundits. What they cannot seem to grasp is that the American people who support Obama have in effect, asked him to opt out of the broken Federal Campaign Finance system. We Obamacrats are deadly serious about getting our Federal Government under control and working for the people once again. If this 'take no prisoners' attitude about making sure that process is begun this election cycle is troubling to the inside the beltway crowd, and the CW spouting MSM; so be it! The pundits are going to have very little to say about things this cycle. Just report the FACTS folks; the sleeping giant of the organized masses will handle their own analysis.
It would be nice if the press let people know that Obama will not/cannot give their donations to Clinton. It has been upsetting to many loyal Obama supporters, the thought that their donations might go to pay Clinton's debt. AND IT'S THE MSM's FAULT. They have left that impression with all the sound bite reporting. And it's just not the case.

He can do events for her & ask his supporters to also donate to her, but that's about it.
I'm hard pressed as to who irritates me more, Pat Buchanan or Morning Joe.  I hit the mute button.  Am so happy when Joe spends extra time in Fla. Show is better without him.
Could Barack pass the plate and help pay for my mortgage?
------------------------------------------------------
Sissy in Bensonville, of course he can.  He will pay for everyone's mortgage so no one has to be responsible for themselves.  Those evil predatory lenders, forcing people to take on mortgages they couldn't afford!  Government to the rescue!
Any truth to the rumor that crow was being served on Hillary's plate?
The media needs to give the public financing thing a rest.  It won't sway any voters to beat it like a dead horse.  It was a smart move becuase he stands to gain more funding for the campaign and he would be suspect in judgement if he made the safe decision to take public financing.

Ask anyone this choice: "You can have $85 or $500 to bid on something that is extremely important to you. The $85 is possibly not enough to win that something because your competition has other ways to get money, but there is a risk that you choose the $500, you might not get all $500.  You are, however, pretty well guaranteed to get at least $100 which should be enough to win what you want.  Which option would you choose?"

If that is too complicated for you Republicans, try this: "Would you rather have $85 or $500?"
WHY WAIT FOR TERRORIST TO BLOW UP OIL INSTALLATIONS BEFORE WE ACT?

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi officials say authorities have arrested hundreds of suspected al-Qaida-linked militants this year. Some of those arrested are suspected of plotting attacks against the kingdom’s oil and economic installations.

Are we waiting for oil to reach $300 a barrel and gasoline $10 a gallon — before we take definitive action to improve our oil and energy supplies?

Facts about U.S. Oil and Natural Gas Resources Closed To Development:

• 38 Billion Barrels of U.S. Oil Resources Inaccessible BECAUSE OF LAWS.
• 1 Trillion Barrels of U.S. Oil Shale Illegal to Develop BECAUSE OF LAWS.

Research:
• Rasmussen: 67% Support Offshore Drilling, 64% Expect it Will Lower Prices
• New Poll: 81% of Americans Support Greater Use of Domestic Energy Resources
• 73% of the American people agree that with appropriate safeguards to protect the environment, we should drill for oil off America’s coasts to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

AN ECONOMIC DISASTER IS JUST A COUPLE OF BOMBS AWAY.
The Washington Post's Ruth Marcus unloads on Obama's decision to opt out of the federal campaign finance system.

The way I see it, Ruth wants to have it both ways. She suggests what Obama can do to make his own brand of public financing look "different" and obviously, no one is going to listen to her. Obama is doing his thing and the facts speak for themselves: he IS different in his entire approach to fund raising. On the flip-side, I can imagine her article had Obama been bone-headed enough to opt into public financing and limit himself to the $85 million that McCain will be stuck with. Sure, you want to be different but no one ever said this man was stupid.
A Charles, LA,  CA...

Amen!

Obama supporters, please note. It is against Federal Election laws for our candidate to give directly to Hillary. As  Charles noted,"He can do events for her & ask his supporters to also donate to her, but that's about it. "

For the sake of party unity and the ultimate goal of a democratic administration, we must all come together and defeat the criminals that have hijacked our nation for 8 years.
It must be totally embarrassing for Hillary to have to kiss this guys butt after the filthy campaign he ran against her. Polls are polls, and focus groups are focus groups, but I'm one Hillary supporter that will think, once, twice, three times before voting for Obama. From a political standpoint, McCain is closer to what Hillary believes then where Obama is on the political spectrum. Both Hillary and McCain love their county in a way that they would protect it at all costs. You don't get that kind of love from Obama, he looks like another slick Chicago politician that will sell the country down the river in the name of 'Peace in Our Time'. Obama seems too clever by half in that he'd have a Green American, which would also include 15% unemployment and $10/gal gas. Every day that goes by it looks more and more like I'll vote for McCain.

This is great news! Thanks! Now I can buy that flat screen tv using my credit card.

Barack 08!
It is right for Senator Obama to help Senator Clinton.  I have been an Obama supporter ever since he announced he was running.  This is one of the reasons, because he is a good person who does the right thing.  She will provide a boost for him and a lot, not all of her supporters will vote for him.  I think it helps to ease tension and unite the democratic party which is a good thing!
With the way she ran her money, I doubt a job as secretary of the treasury is in order for her LOL.

Just let The Clinton's go out and do some shady deals like they always have and that will wipe out the debt in no time....
I'm not sure what the protocol of helping a former opponent w/financing woes has been in the past, but if it is to help-out so be it!  My problem with Clinton is that for at least a month she continued a campaign that she knew could only succeed if the SDs gave her the nom., therefore, she was irresponsibly spending money that she knew she did not have, her decision, her responsibility.

This is however an eccellent example of why Obama will make a better President, he has out organized and financed Clinton, two great abilities a President should have, knowing how to pick the right people for a job and money management skills.

Pt Buchana is the only voice of reason on MSNBC.  He didn't catch the deadly Obama virsus.

Go Pat....tell it like it is...the others tell it like they want it to be. Pat is smart, wise and fair.
Passing the plate for Hillary is a bit of a dilemma.  I feel she totally mismanaged her campaign and her egotistical drive at the end only put her further behind...sort of like a gambler's addiction.  On the other hand, I just want her to go away.  I don't see any advantage to putting her on the ticket as clearly Obama is gaining strength in the polls without her.
Maxine in Ohio:

I agree with you completely about "Morning Joe"?  I would have like to hear what Meachem had to say, but can't sit through Joe's sophomoric commentary.

When will MSNBC find an adult to anchor that show?
people are so naive as to how the clinton political machine works.  have you ever thought why she did not bow out soon enough when everybody knew that it's time to wrap things up?  she didn't care about being in the hole because of exactly this, that the winning candidate will help the losing candidate carry the burden of paying off the loser's (pun intended) debts!  people, the clintons have been around far too long and have run their well-oiled machines smoothly.  well, their machinations are now slowing down and soon will be relegated to the side.  hillary will not, if she decides to run again, win in 2012, nor in 2016.

having said these, however, it's time to unify the party.  if this takes $10 million or so to "buy" her support, then so be it.
I'm very pleased to see the debt assistance, as it's the right thing to do to unite the party and move forward.  If that doesn't work, one of my friends suggested that Hillary ask her supporters to donate $2 each (18M times $2 should retire the debt for a very historic candidate).
Obama is the man with integrity that's why I vote for him. I think he is doing the right thing to ask his supporters for help, although it doesn't mean they will run to her with an open wallet.

Obama all the way.
Hmmm...if (us) Obama donors pays off Hillary's debt, these are the conditions of the payoff.

1: Hillary will campaign as needed and whole-heartedly for Obama, even if this means her "eating crow" on some her negative comments about Obama being naive, inexperienced and not qualified.

2:  Hillary will not accept the V.P. offer.  It would be only offered for public perception sake.  She should be nice and decline sighting her own belief that Obama is stronger without her.

3:  Bill clinton will campaign as needed and whole-heartedly for Obama.

That is a small price to pay, especially if Obama raises anywhere between $5 million to $15 million to help Hillary pay off her debts and loans.
I personally do not want my contributions going to help HRC pay off her debts.  She spent money like it was being picked off trees, then when she lost the nomination she expects her debt to be wiped clean?  NO way.  Where are all of her supporters?  Arn't they the ones who said if she wasn't the nominee they would turn to McCain?  Maybe she should ask them for money again to help pay her vendors.  After all, her supporters say her thinking is more in line with the way McCain's campaign is.  So why doesn't she ask her Clinton/McCain supporters to help pay off her debt?  Were her supporters thinking about unity when they threatened to go and vote for McCain?  That's where she should be looking for her way out.  Her supporters - you know, the ones who were always nasty and rude on these blogs.  Where are you now, HRC supporters?
HRC. It looks like you made some unwise purchases. I sympathize with you as the rest of the citizens of the U.S. find themselves in tough financial times. The main difference is, you choose your own spending situation, we are forced to spend just to live. If it is any concillation, "You fought the good fight"
I love the first comment and agree! clas Warrior and Tina hit the nail in laymans' terms. No way would I contribute and glad I don't have to according the Rules.  The gruesome-twosome dug their own hole.  Get out when the getting was good!  And for all you Obama-haters--stop being in denial and bitter. Did you see Robin Williams commentary last night with Jay Leno re:candidates--so funny-- but yet so eloquent, that Robin.  Get behind a real change--what do you actually want?  Another 8 years --I doubt it-- of McCaint and the Bush agenda?  Good, then don't complain when the recession might become a modern day depression. It's cyclical--Republicans get in, drive up the deficit in untoward numbers--Dems get in and drive it back down and voila!--most everyone is on easy street again. Lest you forget...Pay attention and do some homework. Where's Tim Russert when we need him. It's history--stupid!
