Nader invokes race to criticize Obama

Posted: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 10:43 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
In an interview with the Rocky Mountain News, Ralph Nader says this on Obama:

"There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader said. "Whether that will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards." ...

VIDEO: Ralph Nader accuses Obama of downplaying poverty issues.

"Asked to clarify whether he thought Obama does try to 'talk white,' Nader said: 'Of course. ... I mean, first of all, the number one thing that a black American politician aspiring to the presidency should be is to candidly describe the plight of the poor, especially in the inner cities and the rural areas, and have a very detailed platform about how the poor is going to be defended by the law, is going to be protected by the law, and is going to be liberated by the law,' Nader said. 'Haven't heard a thing.'" ...

" 'He wants to show that he is not a threatening . . . another politically threatening African-American politician,' Nader said. 'He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up.'"

The Obama campaign responded to the paper this way: "We are obviously disappointed with these very backward-looking remarks," Obama campaign spokeswoman Shannon Gilson said.

Wow..This guy gets worse ever 4 years
The last thing anyone should take from NAder is political advise.

Nader is delusional in his presidential aspirations.

Nader is also off the mark with what a presidential candidate should be concerned with.  Many of the things he complains about involves the kind of things better handled at the state and local levels.

Nader, you need to get a grip, and go home.
Oh, and Nader, your comments are soooooooo dated...why don't you just call Obama colored?  Nader's comments are shameful, indeed, if not totally racist.
All of you bloggers who were criticizing the York, PA focus group in the earlier post better watch out: you're about to be called elitist snobs who stand in the corner at the country club w/ their beautiful girlfriend making snide comments.  Oh wait, you were spot on.  It's a testament to our great country that we give people the right to vote who make their judgment based on "his name is Osama, I mean Obama."   Unbelievable.  Do some reading people.  Watch the news (not Fox and Friends).  Educate yourselves.  Please.  For the good of our country.  For the good of your country.  Don't let your vote be hijacked by the fear agenda again.
Who is this Ralph guy?

And why do we care what he has to say?
Another old man who doesn't have a clue.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
Wow. That was really, really stupid, Ralph. Now you might -- might! -- garner 0.000003% of the vote, which, impressively, is exactly equivalent to the amount of your once-vital brain that you're still using.

How can anybody take Nader seriously when his righteous rage against the machine is just executed so poorly?
Ralph who? ...............Exactly!
Hey Ralphie.....haven't you "helped" enough, why don't you spend your time yelling at the neighborhood kids when they go on your lawn or something.
Nader "Old white guy trying to be important."  Um, guess what Nader your comments are stupid and what should a black candidate sound like?  I believe your old and white and live with your mom so tell me Ralphy what should a black man say to make you happy?  Is there a different language other than english?  Geez, why is anyone even paying attention to this old geezer?  Someone repeat after me...I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm nader and I'm crazy....
Ralph Nader has been a very destructive force in Democratic politics, and undeniably beneficial for the Republicans. These comments represent a bitterness the man holds on to that will likely follow him to his grave. Of course Obama cares about these issues, but can he also care about other issues too? The Naderites out there will hopefully see the character flaw in their leader's rhetoric and failing logic. If the Democrats are divided, then the Republicans win again. I guess the idiot Ralph would rather have that?

Does Ralph Nader's opinion really matter this time around?
To Trevor regarding the Pakistan issue, I've got one simple fundamental point:  One man is responsible for attacking us on 9/11.  That man is still free.  George Bush is a traitor to our country for having not dedicated the full force and strength of our great nation in tracking down and eliminating that menace to mankind.   Had we dedicated 150,000 troops and $1 Trillion for five years in Pakistan/Afghanistan, you damned well better believe we would have got Bin Laden and neutered Al Qaeda.  George Bush cut and ran from the real fight.  Despite his tough talk, he's a coward.  And your silly rationales are just that.
Good golly this guy's as old as I am and a hell of a lot more boring.  He's always been a pain and ugly to boot.  I don't care what he thinks about Obama or McCain.  I just don't want to have to see or hear him!  Anyone who votes for a goose like Nader I want you in my poker game.
Naders comments are, perhaps, the most racially deragatory and divisive that I've heard in a very long tme. Nader should be ashamed.

Obama08
"Backward-looking" is one way to put it.(My description would be far less charitable!) There seem to be two camps now; one that says Obama is "too white" and another that brands him "too black"  He is neither (he is an American for all Americans) and he is both (by birth), and he DOES, in fact, talk about the plight of the poor and working poor. If Nader hasn't heard it, he's either deaf or wilfully not listening. Also, Obama's popularity comes from the fact that he has convinced many of us that he WON'T bow to lobbies, multinationals and corrupt Congressmen.  I suspect that Nader has chosen this rather bizarre and nonsensical route because he is jealous that he isn't as charismatic a speaker as Barack Obama.
Go away Nader..Your time is up. You can't pull another 2000 on us!! Especially with those comments. I highly doubt people are going to be running to the polls with that nonsense spewing from your arrogant mouth.
Are Ferraro, McCain, and Nader are having a senility contest?  These are the last gasps of mainstream racism.  It's not angry racism, just paternalistic racism.  "He's black so he should talk about the ghetto."  I guess that means I should know something talk about the country club.
Ralph Nader = irrelevant
.....by the way, you don't need 527's to do the Republicans work with Nader out there doing it for free.
Nader is an antique.  Why else would he think that African Americans are any less diverse than the rest of us?  Go away, Ralph.
What is with all the racial crap?  Just talk about the issues.  This is what seperates us.  I know it will always be our weak point, but this is getting really pathetic.
Well here comes Pat Buchanan..to Nader's defense.. why can't a guy have an opinion without getting beat up for it..

The problem is that as soon as Obama or anyone around him makes a comment, he gets TORTURED for it.. (e.g. bitter remark- 2+ months of coverage and counting; reverend wrights comments-probably forever; father pflegler-probably forever)

The media and those that just hate Obama will give John McCain a pass even though he said and did things like:

*   Voted against MLK day repeatedly
*   Left his disabled wife for a rich trophy wife
*   Admitted that the IRAQ war was for oil and hoped our military men and women wouldn't have to sacrafice their lives in the future for more OIL

*    Stated that he didn't love his country until he was not in her presence in a POW camp.

so you tell me that there isn't a double standard.. Obama has to spend enormous amounts of time and money trying to explain away these attacks.. All McCain has to do is come out and say I don't agree with those views and hey white americans that like him just say OKAY!!
Nice job, Nader.  First you give us 8 years of Bush, now you're stereotyping black politicians.
Great to hear that Nader thinks he's an expert in what it's like to be a black person. Of course, Nader thinks he's an expert on EVERY topic. What an arrogant demagogue. Nader is so out of touch he couldn't get elected Dog Catcher in an uncontested election. He detests everyone--except, of course, himself.
Ralph Nader is a failure as a politician . . .therefore any advice from him about politics is basically useless.

Senator Obama has a broad message for all Americans. It is difficult for those rooted in the old politics of division and demographics to come to terms with. . . but it is on it's way to becoming a reality - and not a moment too soon.

Obama/Biden '08/'12

P.S. The entire concept of "talking white" is in and of itself RIDICULOUS! People talk how they talk folks - has nothing to do with race! GEEZE LOUISE! Is this really the 21 century?
As a resolute advocate of consumer rights, environmental issues, and humanitarianism, Ralph Nader has done his fair share of good.

As a Democratic politician, the guy is a cancer.  The more comments he makes like these, the more the history books will remember him as a political spoiler with an enourmous pie-hole rather than for his more noble works.
Wow, Ralph. Have lunch with Don Imus much?  Why are you still around?

Oh, and thanks for 8 years of a Bush Residency. Hope you're proud.
Gee, at the very least I thought Nader was smart.  I'm disappointed in him because he sounds like a racist to me.  When I see Obama, I don't see color.  I see the greatest President of All Time!
Obama '08!
s also completely wrong. Just do a google search for Obama and "predatory loans" or "lead paint" or "economic imbalance" and you'll easily find several stories about Obama's work and concern regarding those issues.

NAder is DESPERATELY trying to be relevant, but I don't think anyone cares.
These are not only backward-looking remarks. They are racist remarks. Shame on you, Ralph.
This guy should drop out now.  I can't even see his point through the racism.

So, Jesse Jackson ran for President of Blacks?

Obama should too?

There aren't pressing manners which might call on the president to fight poverty for everyone and not just blacks?

I am half black, but identify as black - I am thrilled that Obama's worldview isn't black and white.

He has talked about replacing Affirmative Action with a program that would account for barriers of everyone suffering poverty.
Barack Obama is for ALL folks. We are all Americans and need equal attention—black and white. He is a truly universal thinking candidate and realizes that we all benefit from help and concern from the government. We all interconnect and we cannot isolate one another by targeting only one group. WE ARE A NATION TOGETHER!

Mr. Nadar, you need to upgrade your rhetoric and your thinking. You are back in the 60s.
While the Obama camp might be "disappointed", I applaud Nader for saying out loud what a lot of people want to say.  However, they're attacked for being racist.
The Obama camp's response is about 10 more words than I would have spent on this.
Damn. Nader so you want to talk "black".  Speak about a Republican in Disguise.

Ridiculous - laughable. Another "old head" that thinks he knows what America thinks.

Isn't it ironic that a white man talks about a black man trying to talk white.... this is so stupid.

Anyway - YOU MEAN NOTHING RADER and YOUR WORD EVEN LESS

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

It's amazing how the trashiest news gets the most play.  No wonder people are wondering who Obama is and what his positions are.  The only thing that gets printed is the latest gossip instead of what's truly important for voters in November.
If I had any respect for Ralph Nader it is gone now.  Those are the stupidest remarks I have heard in a long time, and it is those kind of remarks that only fuel the diversity in this country.  White, Black, Hispanic it doesn't matter.  If you are capable of doing the job then that is your qualification, no pandering should be needed.

That is what obama is about, he doesn't pander to one class or another, he is who he is.  And people like him for who he is.  As president he will represent all American's no matter what race.  So why would he say, I'm half african-american so I need to focus on just the poor inner city.  That is not only bad judgement but it is stereotyping.  Something that will not be tolerated.  Obama knows this, obviously Nader doesn't.
I wish he would just go away.  Barack Obama is going to be the president for all Americans and not just African-Americans.  Nader, why don't you go to the ghettos.  Obama is just being himself. Nader is trying to put him in a box.
This is why Nader will NEVER be a serious candidate for President. He's ignornant. Right up there with Pat Buchanan and Rush Limbaugh.
If Obama were to focus on such issues as the plight of the poor, threatening the white power structure, etc., he could never be elected.  Even if he hopes to work to remedy such concerns, he cannot emphasize them in his campaign.  The first task is to get elected.  By speaking out this way, Nader is not being realistic and is showing what a disgruntled man he is.
"Payday loans, predatory lending"

I've always wondered who these people back politically. Just figured it was democrats because it's one of those stories the media doesn't want to dig into.
Why is anyone even still listening to this guy? Nader has squandered all his credibility in the last 8 years and is still fighting battles the tired old 1990s way. That's how Hillary lost. That's how he'll lose for the third time, too.
Why is anyone talking to Ralph Nadar??!!
No comment Ralph..nice try though but the day I or any other self respecting black man takes advice from you on 'blackness' is the day I burn my Miles Davis collection.
Or, Ralph "i have to say something provocative to even be heard this election" Nader....

Maybe he's trying to build an america that we can all live in.  I haven't heard the african american community complain too much of his campaign.  He's been fighting for all lower and middle classes by leveling the tax breaks and code to help them out.  That's middle and lower class as in white, black, hispanic, asian, everyone!!

So you want to stereotype the way a policitian has to be because of their ethnic background, go ahead...it's a free country, do what makes you free  (like running for president 3-4 times, take a hint you are not pres material) but I expected more from you Ralph.
While I disagree with how Nader said it, he has some points. Politics is a game. Both candidates have to balance their true views with the party lines. I feel whoever wins will try to trickle in their views throughout their first term that is different from the standard campaign rhetoric.
Gosh, I'm really glad Nader jumped in with some campaign advice for Obama... then maybe Barack can also poll at 5% or less! It's really sad that a guy who has done so much for his country and consumers worldwide has managed to tarnish his image so effectively. "Old Man Yells at Clounds" indeed...
Nadar has smoked his last brain cell away.
Ralph Nader is a good man...
but, I wish he'd drop out

I don't thin he will, but he'll be irrevelent

CHEER UP !!

YOU GAVE THE BLOOD………
…….  HERE’S THAT OIL !!

AND IT’S NO BID !!

‘…The no-bid contracts are unusual for the industry, and the offers prevailed over others by more than 40 companies, including companies in Russia, China and India….’

From NY Times:

‘…Deals With Iraq Are Set to Bring Oil Giants Back

By ANDREW E. KRAMER
Published: June 19, 2008

BAGHDAD — Four Western oil companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power.

Shell, Total and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies, are in talks with Iraq’s Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq’s largest fields, according to ministry officials, oil company officials and an American diplomat.

The deals, expected to be announced on June 30, will lay the foundation for the first commercial work for the major companies in Iraq since the American invasion, and open a new and potentially lucrative country for their operations.

The no-bid contracts are unusual for the industry, and the offers prevailed over others by more than 40 companies, including companies in Russia, China and India. The contracts, which would run for one to two years and are relatively small by industry standards, would nonetheless give the companies an advantage in bidding on future contracts in a country that many experts consider to be the best hope for a large-scale increase in oil production.

There was suspicion among many in the Arab world and among parts of the American public that the United States had gone to war in Iraq precisely to secure the oil wealth these contracts seek to extract. The Bush administration has said that the war was necessary to combat terrorism. It is not clear what role the United States played in awarding the contracts; there are still American advisers to Iraq’s Oil Ministry.

Sensitive to the appearance that they were profiting from the war and already under pressure because of record high oil prices, senior officials of two of the companies, speaking only on the condition that they not be identified, said they were helping Iraq rebuild its decrepit oil industry….

Hey !
What about Halliburton ?

Don’t THEY get something too ????

Why would these Iraqi Quislings give no bid contracts to American Big Oil ?
Are they working for Iraqi interests ?
Are they serving the Iraqi people ?

Has the Bush Admin NO SHAME ??

Obama/Biden '08

What Nader is saying about the plight of the poor is not falling on deaf ears.  Both the poor and the middle class need change, and Obama is their best hope.  If McCain gets elected, they can expect no help whatever, since he has declared already that he will follow the Bush policies, and that will help only the very wealthy.
