Clinton urges nurses to support Obama

Posted: Thursday, June 26, 2008 12:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In her first speech since conceding the Democratic nomination to Obama, Hillary Clinton urged some of her strongest supporters -- nurses -- to put their energy behind the Democratic nominee.

“I have served with Sen. Obama now for nearly four years in the Senate,” she told delegates of the American Nurses Association this morning. “I campaigned with him for more than 16 months across our country. I debated with in more debates than I can remember. And I have seen his passion and determination and his grit and his grace.”

VIDEO: Mike Barnicle joins the "Morning Joe" team to discuss the effect Hillary Clinton's support will have on Barack Obama's campaign.

She said the stakes were too high not to unite, noting as she did in her concession speech that Democrats have won the White House only three times in the last 40 years.

“Think of how much progress we could have made over the last 40 years with different kinds of leadership, leadership that really trusted and believed in the American people and the American dream,” she said. “On the environment, on energy, on civil rights and human rights, on health care, on so much that mattered to us. That’s why it is critical that this election summon up the very best that America has to offer.”

She targeted McCain specifically on health care, saying it was “inexplicable” that he opposed expanding SCHIP, and “unbelievable” that his health care plan would, she said, “cause millions of hard working Americans to lose the coverage they already have.”

“So whatever issue you care about, whatever your passion might be, we have to join together and present a united front on behalf of our nations future, and our children and grandchildren and generations to come,” she said.

She invited the nurses, and overwhelmingly female audience, to join her on the campaign trail, noting she will start tomorrow.

“We are going to a place very appropriately called Unity, New Hampshire,” she said. “It’s not only well named but in the New Hampshire primary both of us received exactly 107 votes.  So it pretty much mirrored the rest of the campaign where it was right down the middle.”

Clinton seemed relaxed, rested, and more self-deprecating than she was on the campaign trail. At one point she said she’d been involved in politics for, “I hate to confess, 40 years. Somebody should please call out, ‘Oh I don’t believe it.’ But it’s true!”

And as she spoke about her benchmark issue, health care, she spoke of a number of encounters she had across the country, from Iowa to South Dakota, with people who have struggled to receive adequate care. And each time she mentioned a state she traveled through, cheers would erupt from the various delegations in the room.

“I’ve been everywhere,” she said after one interruption from the West Virginia corner. “And had the best time doing it.”

CLINTON SUPPORTERS NEED TO PAY HER BILLS FOR HER!

18 MILLION SUPPORTERS + 1.00 EACH = PAID OFF DEBT.
Lord knows, Bill sure does.

Yeah...but Obama is not Dukakis....not even close.
Keep dreaming.

Agreed. Dukakis was much, much better.
Love ya, Hillary, but no can do.  I won't vote for a Leninist Communist.
>>>ARE YOU BETTER OFF THEN YOU WERE 8 YEARS AGO??<<<

Barack and Michelle would have to answer yes.
Nice one Hillary!  Very, very nice!  You are 100% right.  A womans right to chose as well as a whole host of other issues are at stake!  You go Hillary!
Why no news on BO's latest flip?  He supported a filibuster of the FISA bill until ne supported the bill.  Or, as he did in Illinois he just won't turn up and register a vote.
first read,

why no article on the supreme court's ruling on the 2nd amendment?
I am slowly, but surely, gaining some respect back for Hillary.  As long as she keeps up this message, continues hitting McCain in his weak areas (everything), and praising Barack and his policies, I may just be able to bear hearing her voice by November.
She's doing her part for your guy so you all need to step off! If she keeps this up she may even convince die-hard supporters(like myself) to vote obama. She needs to keep pushing the points on policy because she knows many of us question his character. She's sooo right to make the 3 times in 40 yrs argument- it speaks directly to what matters to me and many of her supporters.
Enough with the kindergarten name calling boobie...reeaallly?
>>“Think of how much progress we could have made over the last 40 years with different kinds of leadership, leadership that really trusted and believed in the American people and the American dream,”

Sure Hill, lets take a look:

>> “On the environment,

#2 carbon producer behind China

>> on energy,

Greens, who are all left wingers, won't let us build a nuke, a refinery , or dig a hole to get oil. Check gas prices lately Hill? And just where is that alternative energy you've been talking about for 50 years?

>> on civil rights and human rights,

Dems were dragged kicking and screaming into that one.

>> on health care,

#1 in the world, but only because your socialization of it failed in '93.

>> on so much that mattered to us. That’s why it is critical that this election summon up the very best that America has to offer.”

Agreed. John McCain.
I watched a documentary on Eleanor Roosevelt on PBS the other night. What an amazing woman, and so far ahead of her times. Did you know the Klu Klutz Klan had a bounty on her and the FBI wouldn't assure her saftey if she spoke to a group of civil rights workers? So, she went anyway, alone, with a gun on the car seat.  Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt: two exceptional, progressive women.
Please, No snide Clinton remarks. It's time to come together. Hillary supporters are welcome in the evergrowing Democratic Party tent. The goal is to beat McOld.
Is this what Bobbi from Eau Claire, WI. would call "feeding them the kool-aid"???

Bobbi...you drank Hillary's Kool-Aid a long time ago! Would you like a refill??

Yeah, I think I might like your idea better!  :-)
"And as she spoke about her benchmark issue, health care, she spoke of a number of encounters she had across the country, from Iowa to South Dakota,"

I was pretty good in US Geography Class....Iowa and South Dakota are pretty close to each other...not a very broad area....

Most people would say...Virginia to Oregon to encompass the entire nation....she focus on two small states close together.

And she wonders why she lost?
Hillary the stakes will be even higher if the Democratics lose the 38% of Muslim voters who have been alienated and mischaracterized. Many say they will sit home.

Hillary you must debunk the Muslim lie.

Go to mosques with Obama.
Then the fractured party will  be UNIFIED after having gone a long divisive primary.

Obama next 8 years
Go Obama
Good to see Hillary begin to step up.  She can only help Obama by moving her base to his camp and bring in their money.

Once Hillary reinforces the fact that McCain has a zero NARAL rating support from her woman supporters will increase substantially.

Now if Bill steps they both would be a huge help in the south and more rural areas.  Arkansas is definitely in play as are other more rural states.

Go Hillary!

Bobbi from Eau Claire, WI:

Now go ahead and take what Hillary said and twist it into another one of your hate-filled comments about Senator Obama.
HRC: "I campaigned with him for more than 16 months across our country."
--I'm not sure 'with' is the correct word in this or the following sentence.
Clinton supporters don't listen to her. ( odd to say )
She is being bullied by the DNC to try and get you to support her enemy as she HAS to. McCain is our best hope now she is out of the race. Hold to our conviction and support Hillary in a way she can't. We will have a victory in 2012 !
all i have to say is thank you HRC for saying again what is just plain obvious.  if you ever supported her, you cannot possibly support mccain.  research his policies and know that if you have daughters that is what you are subjecting them to.  i have three daughters myself and it may be selfish but i will be voting for there best interests.

my brother is a vet who is getting absolutely no help with the pittance that the current administration calls his benefits.  i will be voting in his best interests, and his sons best interest also.

that person is barack obama.

OBAMA 08/12
My wife is a nurse and was formerly a Clinton supporter who now supports Obama. I think it will be great for Obama to reach out to nurses in order to help unite the party between Clinton and Obama supporters.

No can do on the support Obama.  Too risky and as one man of God said, terrifying. That is how I feel.  I read Obama's books.
She's comin around. Doing a pretty nice job too. Thank you Senator Clinton.
Thank you, Hillary

On to a Democratic Victory

A Democratic Landslide
Wasn't it Hillary who said OBAMA IS NOT READY TO BE PRESIDENT?
