McCain: Gun ruling, a 'landmark victory'

Posted: Thursday, June 26, 2008 12:16 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- McCain called the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the D.C. gun ban a “landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom” and said Obama has reversed his positions on guns.

Speaking on his bus before making a stop at Skyline Chili, McCain acknowledged the amicus brief he filed in the case and said he was “pleased with the ruling.” But he said Obama has changed his positions on gun control.

VIDEO: In a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court has reaffirmed the right for individuals to own firearms, striking down Washington D.C.'s ban on handguns. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

“All I can say it’s one in a long, in a long series in reversals of positions,” McCain said. “In a few days he has gone from opposing nuclear power, to not a proponent, to willing to explore. I fully anticipate -- whether it be on his pledge on public financing or his position on the Second Amendment, or any other issues -- he is changing his positions. So it's not surprising.”

Obama released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling: “I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view, and while it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe. Today’s ruling, the first clear statement on this issue in 127 years, will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.

“As President, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne. We can work together to enact common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole and improving our background check system, so that guns do not fall into the hands of terrorists or criminals. Today's decision reinforces that if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.”

McCain made his comments before attending a weekly town-hall meeting, which he has invited Obama to join. He spoke today at the town hall at Xavier University before a backdrop featuring the preamble to the Constitution -- "We the People" -- and the images of an American flag and the Statue of Liberty.

In a written statement, McCain took a swipe at comments Obama made about gun owners in Pennsylvania, suggesting that Americans cling to religion or guns because of financial hardship.

“Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right -- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly,” he said.

In a conference call with reporters, McCain supporter Sen. Sam Brownback went further.

“This is either an incredible flip flop or incredible inexperience on this issue,” Brownback said. “Anybody whose been around politics in Washington D.C. knows the center of this gun ban debate is whether this is an individual right.”

And Brownback suggested Obama could next change positions on Iraq.

“The next thing you may see Sen. Obama move on is Iraq,” he said. “With the news coming out about the surge and its successfulness, I think you’re going to see that move take place.”

McCain also spoke on the North Korea agreement, saying there are still questions about plutonium and Syrian facilities.

“And so my overall impression is we should be very cautious as I said a number of times in the past,” he said. “But I'll be very interested in hearing all the details of the administrations new position.  Its an evolving situation.”

Lots of guns but no habeas in McCain's America.
I still find it hysterical that Republicans are trying to use elitism as a tactic...

Hi Pot...I'm Kettle..you're black!
****************************************************
does Obama need the Clintons as much the media claims?..........WOW
****************************************************

FINALLY ... A GOOD QUESTION !
ANSWER : Aren't YOU the media?

First Read, How many articles on the Clintons have you done since she left the race?

Look into yourself before accusing the rest of the media.
You guys amaze me ... you should SELF-EXAMINE yourself.

We have been saying this for a while now !

Joe Scarborough, Dan Abrams, Pat Buchanan are all guilty of this.
By the way, can Contessa Brewer and Micka Bresinski get any more ditzier?

Please MSNBC, I already stopped watching Morning Joe because I considered all the Clinton talk just manufactured news.

Question: Is MSNBC trying to inject Clintons back into the race.

WHY ARE YOU STILL RUNNING A TEXT MESSAGE POLL trying to figure out how many of us want Hillary as V.P? Why not Biden, Richardson, Bayh, Rendell etc?

Look into yourself MSNBC before you blame "the Media!"

NEWSFLASH ! YOU ARE THE MEDIA !!
Proving yet again, that Republicans don't do nuance.

Especially if it means actually reading the court's decisions, which Obama's people appear to have actually done.
How can anyone read Obama's statements and not feel thilled to see the return of common sense to the American political scene? I will be so proud to have this man as my President.
Now maybe legal gun owners can defend themselves in Chicago. Obama, Mayor Daley and turbin Durbin saw to it that only criminals could own guns in that town. It's been a blood bath against the innocent since that time.
Let me guess, Obama is now for guns. That man is going to need the heavy duty neck brace for all his flip-flops.
I like obama's response. I'm still waiting for him to grow a set and go to a town hall meeting-soon. McCain seems to be locking obama in on his current stand on Iraq. Could be bad for obama. In the future obama may need to adjust his position on Iraq to evolving circumstances.
Two things:

First, John McCain used the Supreme Court ruling as an opportunity to try, albeit ineffectively, to take personal shots at Obama.  Obama, on the other hand, eloquently articulated his position, which I tend to agree with, on a hyper-sensitive and extremely partisan issue.  The fact of the matter is, he's right.  Ask residents of Philadelphia, as well as police officers in cities where gun violence is prevalent, and they will agree with Barack's stated position.  Heck, even Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.

Read back over the post and tell me, who sounds more presidential, and who sounds like they have dementia?

Point two: is Sam Brownback retarded?

Obama 08
Whewwwwwwwww.......guns are protected.  When are they going to try Bibles?  Obama needs those dirty old Bibles gone so people start worshiping him, the New Messiah.

BO's changed positions again, now on guns.  He must getting dizzy with all the flipflopping and spinning around he's been doing.  He's a fake and a fraud that will say and do anything, including throwing grandma under the bus, to get elected.  How can people be so blind to his true character?
Ever notice murders were highest where guns were banned? Liberals could never figure that one out.
Mr. McCain & Mr. Brownback sound like the sniping mean spirited men we have come to know.

Mr. Obama sounds reasonable and measured in he response to the court's ruling.

Do we want another sniping, graduated at the bottom of his class person for president or have we, as a nation, learned our lesson and will we choose the intelligent, thinking & reasoned person????
McCain can't make a public statement without turning it into an attack on Obama.  Pretty sad, when you think about it...

"Old man follows directions of lobbyist handlers"
Both candidates are professional flippers, they say and do different things.  Obviously its not an experience concern considering we have two very end of the spectrums on that.

Its sad that with the millions of citizens in this country that could probably run this country better than any candidate (at any time in this primary season) would have done better.  Can we just start from Scratch with all new options?  I wouldn't mind extending Bush's term for 3-4 more months to find someone actually capable.

If not, I'll have to vote for the lesser of two evils...chalk one up for McCain
Still no coverage of McBush admitting we are heading into World War III and that he is planning to reinstate the draft.

Guess people can find out about it here:

Too bad First REad doesn't want to report REAL news.

McCain is running a 90's campaign. It's very disappointing. The way he attacks Obama is so obvious that it has little effect. The substance is definitely lacking and short of another terrorist attack, or more crazy supreme court rulings, journalists should start looking up metaphors for landslide.

The electorate has seen GW unabashedly use the rovian playbook & is now desensitized to these comments by a GOP candidate. If he can't bring more 'Maverick' to the table, he can save us all 85 million and just concede now.
See libbies, this right is all written down and spelled out directly in the consititution. Even you libs can have someone read it to you so maybe you'll finally get it. Not like that abortion right that doesn't appear to be found anywhere.

“All I can say it’s one in a long, in a long series in reversals of positions,”  said the spider to the fly,...

Priceless, I can't believe McCain thinks he has any ground to stand by pointing out an Obama position shift, however nuanced.

He better not eat the chili at Skyline, the heartburn will keep him up well past his bedtime.
I hardly think owning a deadly weapon is sacred.  This isn't the Wild West anymore, so in my opinion, the gun needs no further deifying.
I lived in DC for 6 years and then outside of it for 1 and a half. I will be moving now because I don't want to be anywhere near the wild west that will come about and everyone will just claim "protection". This was never about right vs left and it super pisses me off that politicians turn it into that. This is about essentially protecting today's DC against the DC of the early 90's when it was the murder capitol. The blood will be on these 5 judges hands.
I guess now Obama will start packing heat, you know, to show what a tough guy he is. Better get the Billy Kidd starter kit there Barack, anything bigger might just topple you over.
I love that McFlopper/ Bush / GOp tactic of misdirection.  How better to take attention off of your incessant position changing than to label the other guy the flip flopper.  The GOp does this better than anyone else, because the just don't quit.  They will have 100 morons on the news repeating word for word the same talking point.

Now, today, we are to accept this?
Obama was asked for his opinion. He said he won't have one because his advisor for that area is taking the day off and his speech writer doesn't get back from a dentist appointment until later today.
Yeah..like McFlipFlop is one to talk!!

THAT'S ALL HE DOES IS CHANGE HIS POSITIONS!

Someone take him to the old folks home please!
Obama is a constitutional scholar, lawyer and professor.  Recognizing the right of law abiding individuals to own a gun, he understands that this right is NOT absolute and subject to reasonable regulations to protect the community against criminals and others who would abuse the right.

Good ruling but we need a common sense approach to implement the ruling.

Obama '08
lock and load...its time to kill some criminals...I forget what the stat was on people who actually used a gun to sucessfully defend themselves versus the number of kids killed accidentally but I think the kids lost...guns don't kill kids but their ignorant gun wielding parents and relative sure do
Has anyone noticed how Obama speaks so much more fluently, eloquently and intelligently than poor old McFrail?  The discussion could be about flatulence and Obama would win.

McFossil, you're King of Flip-Flopping, especially when it comes to wives; you're not fooling anyone here.
There you go chickenhawks...you can take your gun rights to iraq and learn to fight...ta ta
Oh brother...placing his preconceptions on everyone else just to reach out in left field for a slam...Sam Brownback is just an idiot.  Most of us in KS have known this for a LONG while but for some fool reason he keeps getting re-elected!  Even my republician friends think this guy is an idiot!  Roberts is no better.  Thank goodness we have some really great candidates to run against him.  Why is McCain having all these former candidates be his spokesmen?  Guilani, Thompson, and Brownback have all been one note candidates.  I don't see Obama trotting Kucinich out there for him...guess you don't just get judgement 5 years after you SHOULD have retired!
Ok Mr McCain, when was the last time you were in chicago, New York, Phili, LA, DC(the black areas) Detroit, Houston, Altanta, Boston, Dallas, if you would read the papers or talk top local police you will find that gun violance is killing our children, if you want excutions for child rape then killing a child with a hand gun is just as bad, it is the gun shop owners that are pouring our streets with guns, all types. now i'm a dem, i beieve in the right to own and bear arms,i don't agree but its the law. but you must look at this from the other side of the issue, in chicago 30 years ago handguns permits were no longer issues in an effert to reduce the amount of HAND GUNS but as we see last night a 3 year old found a gun in the house and killed him self. you must come half way on this issue, hunters, sportsman, do have the right to have guns, but there must be laws inacted in the major citys to reduce guns, hold gun store owners accountable for the firearms they sell.
too many of then from these gun shops make it to the streets where a 8 year old can't walk home from school with out being shot at. YEA YOU PROBILLY HAPPY THAT THIS DECISION WAS HANDED DOWN, BUT COME TO CHICAGO, WALK ON THE SOUTH,WEST, AND NORTH SIDES AND SEE FIRST HAND WHAT HAND GUN VIOLANCE HAS DONE TO THE MAJOR CITIES, IRAQ IS SAFER THAN SOME STREETS IN THE MAJOR CITIES!!!
YOUR GUTLESS TO BE BLAST OBAMA ON THIS, YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE ALL THE PARENTS IN YOU STATE CRYING BECAUSE OF THE GUN VIOLANCE!!!!
I like to keep personal defense clear...I have a 6 foot fence, a 100lb dog who hates strangers and if anyone including the storm troopers from the bush adminstration get past that I intend to unload a 30 round clip of 7.65mm in the first one through the door...you've been warned
I own a gun and believe that individual Americans have a right to own arms.  Obama's comments are right on target as he does support owning a gun and addresses the issue of violence in big cities.

What struck me was the vote was 5 to 4. If there is an increase in lawlessness in the courtry, I wonder if this decision could someday be overturned. Just thinking.
So is Obama turning into a Conservative Republican? First he thought child rapists should get the DP. Now he's okay with guns. Next he'll support Iraq until they are ready to take over their own security.

Better watch out libs, next we'll see Barack digging oil wells on the Chicago lakefront.
John McCain supports keeping the troops in Iraq forever, no health insurance for all,  is without a strategy on energy independence and is clueless about the technology changes that drive our economy.  John McCain is talking about guns, and quite frankly, the supreme court's decision means that whether we hire a democrat or a republican, it won't affect the rights of americans to own guns.  John McCain should think up another issue to talk about now, because ironically enough, this one won't hunt anymore.
Obama is now for guns? What's next, a guest appearence with him and Limbaugh?
OBAMA = Flip Flop
I think the decision is fair. I think we can certainly uphold constitutional rights, while also regulating those rights within reason.

http://www.politivine.com
McCain should spend more time clarifying is own insane positions (and flip-flops) instead of trying to twist the clear and common sense coming out of Obama.
It never ceases to shock the hell out of me every time I see Sen McCain criticizing Sen Obama changing his position on an issue.  It's like he's forgoten the many times he's changed his own position...on some of the SAME issues.  Amazingly, the MSM is not calling him on this.
It's interesting how McCain takes swipes at Obama with every single thing he says, regardless of the validity.
Amazing!

John McCain Lauds the ruling and immediatly throws accusations at Barack Obama.

Barack Obama gives an intelligent response, recognizing the constitutional right while acknowledging our need to keep weapons out of crimnal hands.  Sounds Presidential to me.
Brownback and McCain:  STOP YELLING AT THE CLOUDS!!

Go home, soak the corns, jackhammer the mutant mountain range toe nails and have Cindy rub your back.
McCain and Brownback,
That’s not flip flopping.
First of all, Obama upholds and interprets the Second Amendment being the brillian,t constitutional, scholar, and attorney that he is.
Secondly, you care nothing about a safe environment. Otherwise, you wouldn’t want to destroy the planet. Neither would have bombed killed and mimed innocents and our soldiers on a faux war nor would advocate an environment for crime-ravaged communities which don’t save its people. Now you want to bomb Iran.
Thirdly, you cannot criticize Obama, who unlike you is not a cowardly wuss. Neither of you have moral authorities.
go Obama
Why didn't FR acknowledge that McCain is wrong, when he accuses Obama about changing his position on Gun Control.  Obama's position about gun control remains consist to when I voted for him as my Senator 4 years ago.  All the Repukes seem to do is try to distort a record and paint everything black & white, while the majority of the population sees things as some shade of gray.
Obama has been consistant with his stance on guns. He repeatedly states that he supports the second ammendement, but inner cities should find ways to ensure that guns are not put in the wrong hands like gang members. what might work in rural areas may not be effective in the inner cities due to the rise in violence. Obviously McCain will not know about inner city violence because he is out of touch with the situation. Second, Obama has said for weeks that we should explore nuclear power if we find a way to responsible get rid of the waste without destroying the enviornment. Keep cherry picking McCain. you have flip flop more times than Kerry.
Obama is a gun grabber plain and simple,  why is it that Liberals are so fierce to only defend the parts of the constitution that they agree with.
Obama is talking out of both sides of his mouth this issue.Mccain has a lobbyist for NRA on his campaign staff.
Obama finally says something that makes sense, amazing.......

Yet the left wing nutjobs on the liberal side will continue to want to rewrite the constitution......
In a written statement, McCain took a swipe at comments Obama made about gun owners in Pennsylvania, suggesting that Americans cling to religion or guns because of financial hardship.
PLEASE, Obama was speaking of people who are upset with thier government.
When you are bitter about your government and what they are doing, it appears that the only thing we can do is, "Cling to our constitutional rights".
Our constitutional rights to bear arms, and freedom of religion, are to never be changed by our government.
That is what we cling to, our rights.
