Obama holds competitiveness summit

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Ingenuity, innovation, and alternative energy sources were the buzz words at the competitiveness summit Obama hosted here this morning to wrap up a three-week economic tour.

As he has done at every event over the course of his tour, the Illinois senator drew a contrast between his vision for America and McCain's. “He has supported and would continue an agenda that I believe has failed to keep pace with the challenges of the 21st century,” Obama said. “I’m convinced that we must move in a new direction. If we have the courage to commit to change, the American people cannot just seize -- but shape -- the opportunities of the global economy. Together, we can author our own story. Together, we can pursue a 21st century leadership agenda that’s focused on five areas: energy, education, health care, infrastructure, and innovation.”

VIDEO: Sen. Barack Obama's communications director David Aselrod talks to "Morning Joe" about how Obama will be able to help the economy.

The presumptive Democratic nominee said the government, in partnership with the American people, must do more to help keep the country competitive, repeating the phrase “this can be the moment” to spell out the goals he hopes to achieve as president -- from ending the country’s dependence on oil to committing to making higher education and affordable healthcare accessible to everyone.

Obama spoke at Carnegie Mellon University alongside 13 economic, industry, educational, and community-based leaders from around the country whom he brought together to discuss issues ranging from the need to find new sources of energy, to education and health care. Among the 10 men and three woman in attendance were GM Chairman and CEO G. Richard Wagoner Jr.; MIT President Susan Hockfield; Geoffrey Canada, the president and CEO of Harlem Children's Zone; Chairman and CEO of Revolution Health Steve Case (formerly the chairman and CEO of America Online); SEIU President Andy Stern; US Steel Chairman and CEO John Surma; Harold Varmus, the president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; former Transportation Secretary Federico Peña, who is also a former energy secretary; and retired Marine Gen. James Jones, whose name has been mentioned a VP possibility (but who also recently added a McCain event).

The panelists spent the most time -- the first 40 minutes -- talking about energy issues, including the need for more support for research and development and an infrastructure that can support new technologies. Obama turned first to Wagoner for his take on how the government could help automakers stay competitive while developing new technologies that can rely on alternative fuels.

“We start from a history, in which globally we’ve relied about 95% on oil to as the source of energy to power vehicles, and it’s clear from the trends in oil prices and the demand for oil that we now need to move to a phase where we’re going to diversify the sources of energy that are used in our sector and others as well. From our perspective that offers advantages including more stability in energy prices, energy security and addresses emissions issues as well. So this is, I think, an initiative that’s really worth taking on,” Wagoner said before going on to talk about the need for government support in developing new technologies and new sources of energy to stretch the oil available and bring alternative fuels online.

Participants spent the remainder of the time talking about how to improve education, increase access to affordable health care, and provide more support for science and innovation.

Canada drew applause when he lamented what he called an anti-intellectualism in America that trickled from the top down. “There is a sense in this country that in my belief is anti-intellectual. There is almost a case to be made against smart people and that has penetrated I think from the top leadership in this country right through the ‘hood’ where people look down on folk who are academically prepared gifted and we’ve gotta change this culture,” he said. “America is fascinated by whether you can drink a beer. That’s not, that should not be the qualification for a president. A president ought to be able to lead the nation in a direction where young people aspire for the kind of genius that’s around this table.”

The comment was notable given attempts by Obama’s rivals to paint the Ivy League-educated lawyer as an elite, out-of-touch, country club liberal.

Obama made a point in his closing remarks to note that there were areas of agreement across party lines about what direction America should head. “When it comes to how we need to retool America to continue its greatness, we’ve got a lot of stuff that we can agree on and I think this panel is a testament, ‘cause not everybody on here -- believe it or not, guys -- are Democrats. And not everybody here, I think, necessarily shares a broad political philosophy, but it shows you how clear our path should be."

After the nearly two hour-long event Wagoner and Canada were among panelists who spoke with the media. Wagoner said Obama’ comments today  “reflected a much more detailed understanding of what’s going on in the industry” than did his speech to Detroit automakers last year. But he declined to express any judgment about which candidate’s energy policy would be best for business. Canada said he was unaware of McCain’s education policy proposals, but that he was encouraged by some of Obama’s plans, including his focus on early childhood education and efforts to recruit, train, and reward quality teachers.

What's really fantastic is that Obama does the live streaming of these various events on myspace.  I know he did it on myspace for the governor conference last week also...if you make him a myspace friend, you'll receive a bulleting when he's streaming the event live.  I'm not an Obama supporter (yet) necessarily, and I find these events more enlightening than watching him read a speech.  I wish he'd do a lot of town halls with McCain so we can compare them ourselves and not just listen to whatever is being dished up by the one-sided talking heads with agendas at the cable news networks
We need to join Germany in facilitating development of a more entrenched alternative energy economy. I think Germany is clearly the leader at present... but we can kick their (backsides) if we put our mind to it.
<<Ingenuity, innovation, and alternative energy sources >>

Yadda, yadda, yadda. Been hearing this one for 40 years now, and what do we have to show it? Nadda.

Please Barack, you insult our intelligence.
I'm an Obama supporter as you can tell from my prior posts.  Got to tell you, on these issues, especially energy, I would like to hear a clear, concise plan on a short and long term solution to the problem.  Gas will average $5 in the not so distant future and I have not heard Obama's plan to stop the pain at the pump.
Does McOl'Phart have a plan for anything, other than bombing Iran?
A plan Obama! We need a plan from you! Not platitudes. Not flower speeches. A plan. McCain has a plan - more drilling, more refineries, more nukes, more mines. You Obama have none of those. You talk about "new directions" and "courage for change", neither of which fills my gas tank or heats my house.

Obama, you sound good, but you're no good.
The President has nothing to do with the economy.

If Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Mc Cain want to help the economy, go buy a house.
I truley beleive that when Obama is President he will continue these types of Summits in which he brings people together to discuss ways to move forward. Of course he has his own idesas and biases, but he is willing to listen to others and consider their opinions. Unlike the current administratoin that only surrounds himself with people who agree with him.

Amen to that point of view, Mr. Canada.  We have too long been willing to accept, even encourage, the dumbing down of our leaders.  If we are to improve this nation and get it moving again we will need to find every intelligent, creative idea lurking in the minds of our citizens and give them a chance to percolate into substantive actions.

Finally, we are looking at an opportunity to have the kind of nation we are capable of.

Thank God ...

I have to wonder, why these conferences have not been held for the past 8 years, or why McOld is not holding summits with the country's leaders.  It's like we have 8 years of catching up to do.
Benefits: Not only are new ideas perking, but business leaders see the positive energy and intellect of Obama.  It is not just unions who will support Obama, but people like Warren Buffett, educational leaders, industry leaders, economists, et.al. who are giving positive input to making a new America.  This is why Obama has 1.5 million supporters. People are seeing what "turning the page" really means.
Obama/Biden 08
God, I hope this man gets elected. We can finally have a president that promotes intelligence in the people he leads. This is the selling point for me when it comes to Obama.

Obama 08
Bet the now infamous Obama seal was not on dispaly!
I'm a big Obama supporter but I find it harder and harder to support him as he increasingly limits himself to only the most broad and obvious talking points.
Today Obama had an opportunity to respond to McCain's Energy speech in California with specific plans that talk about solar and rebuilding our energy grid - and the cost. Instead we heard about "this" being the moment. He supports a "robust" system of public finance yet he can't take the chance of not spending enough money.

I'm sure as President he will have the right judgment to make better decisions than McCain or Bush, as long as he doesn't start running for reelection in January 2009.

Ok...this sounds like something out of a Dilbert cartoon where the VP says something like, "We have to synergize our straw man to utilize the new paradigm."  A lot of words that sound beautiful but mean absolutely nothing.  What the heck does Obama's statement mean anyway?  Does this guy know how to give a specific statement?
MSNBC left out a participant: Vinod Khosla
Canada said he was unaware of McCain’s education policy proposals, but that he was encouraged by some of Obama’s plans, including his focus on early childhood education and efforts to recruit, train, and reward quality teachers.

What, we're back to this again??? This has NOTHING to do with the economy! We produce plenty of solid minds to work and solve difficult problems in this country. This is NOTHING more then a payoff to the bloated primary and seconday education industry of the country.

Obama has NOTHING in the way of new ideas. These are all the same old ideas the Democrats have been pushing for 50 years. Obama thinks that if he puts a little red bow on the same old package, thats somehow a new idea!
So for all you nay-sayers out there that says he doesn't have a plan..............what do you say now? The press just needs to keep writing about HIS speeches compared to McFossil's. Obama's got a vision for the future; McFossil is stuck in the 1950s, along with his policies.
Obama has a vision for America, but it is only a vision.  He has all these ideas but no action to go with them.  "Hope" will not fill my gas tank, it will not bring victory in Iraq or Afghanistan, it will not bring us any closer to renewable energy, it will not accomplish anything.  Obama’s inexperience and political expediency is apparent, and I find it amusing that all of the supposed "geniuses" can't figure out that Obama is naive, inexperienced and clueless.  Apparently common sense and genius can't occupy the same mind.
Obama has a plan; McCain has gimmicks that all experts agree won't work. Unfortunately, the MSM repeats all McCain's scurrilous, specious, and spurious attacks without bothering to do their job and refute them. Republicans are on the MSM slandering Obama constantly and no one is bothering to mention, oh yah, that's a lie.

Obama has always said nuclear energy is a possibility, if it is safe.

He has repeatedly stated that he believes that the second ammendment involves an individual right to bear arms.

He has set specific detailed plans to invest in green technology, alternative energy, innovation, and green jobs that he has been forwarding for months before McCain figured out he needed something else to talk about besides the decption that we are "winning" in Iraq (How many US troops died today? Did another Iraqi elected official do the killing?).

Come on, do your job. Report the crap McCain says but note the lies, half-truths, and straw-men. Do the same for Obama. Give us a reason to trust you again.
This is a great report.  Thanks, First Read guys.

I agree that the country should be run by smart people.  We've seen the opposite for 7 1/2 years now, and nowhere has it been felt more than in the civil service, where government departments have been de-professionalized and hiring has been done on the basis of politics rather than expertise.  In my view, the current administrations hiring practices have crippled some organizations -- we saw it with FEMA, most notably.

This week's topic is Energy policy on
http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
You know I have to reiterate how sad it is in America that a child is scolded for being smart..Its like Americans celebrate ignorance.   I work for a company that has an office in India and the employees that work there speak over 12 languages... While here in America we celebrate the fact that our brand is so great and large volumes of people here can't even speak, read or write ENGLISH over a 3rd grade level...

No wonder we are falling behind other countries that relish the opportunity to get all the education the U.S. will give them..

I mean have dealt with a complete idiot for 8 years in GWB and now we have the choice between a guy that graduated at the BOTTOM of his naval academy class or a guy that was the PRESIDENT of the Harvard Law review..

The one candidate that is academically challenged (MCCAIN) says lets not be diplomatic and bomb anyone that does follow us or believe in American ideals.

Then we have the other candidate that is well-educated (OBAMA) who is willing to be diplomatic and try to actually solve our problems WITHOUT violence and people jump all over him trying to portray him as weak..

Its clear to me that our choice as Americans is to have our figurehead for the next 4 to 8 years as someone who can ARTICULATE the American ideals and interest OR someone who just wants to walk around with their GUNS ready for someone to disagree with us and shoot/bomb them into submission..
Those comments on anti-intellectualism are spot on.  This country is in real danger of sliding into the kind of rabble-rousing demagoguery you expect from Venezuela, Iran, and Zimbabwe.  It's time for progressives to stop sitting by patiently for their turn to speak, while the far right puts up the same old lies, straw men, and ignorant drivel.  Rachel Maddow said it best: Sometimes, there aren't two reasonable sides to an argument.
This is precisely how we will turn this country around. This is a good start. Find the common ground and act.
John McCain has my vote because I'm dedicated to making sure we don't progress as a country. I really like how all my needs are met right now and don't care if anyone else is struggling to put gas in their car, buy food, or keep their home. If everyone was exactly like I am, things would be fine.
Here is a surprisingly fair assessment of Obama's bipartisan record at the State Senate
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/06/25/obamas-state-senate-years-show-bipartisan-record/.
This accurate record is more fair than the recent election year distortion of the candidate's records.
Obama clearly has the road map for a future where America wont be taking a back seat to China and Oil rich mideast nations.

America does not need a slow moving war hero.  We need an invotative leader who pull us out of the slump we are in and pull has through the challenges of the 21st Century.

Rise Up, This is OUR Moment, THIS is our Time.
Who could possibly vote for McCain over Obama?  If I was a McCain, I would be embarrassed.
This was a great summit, with a lot of innovative ideas.  Sen. Obama is on the right track, and I'm so looking forward to the future and seeing our country thrive again.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
I haven't heard any of the candidates talk about using "ingenuity" or "innovation" to dispose of nuclear waste.  Nuclear energy is not so safe if the waste is so toxic it can ruin the environment.  There really needs to be research into possibly turning nuclear waste into an innocuous substance that can then be disposed of without damaging the environment.  How can we be smart enough to develop nuclear technology but not smart enough to figure out how to REALLY deal with the waste.

The same with household waste, some of which will be in landfills FOREVER.  This should be part of the whole environment/energy discussion.  Haven't seen it yet.
Good for Obama, now that's what I call solutions.

Now for the media (including SNL & the Talk Shows) who have done a very very poor job of making fun of John McCain.

1)Why hasn't anyone pointed to his smug 'arrogant' smile that shines any time he thinks he has made a good dig at Obama?  Or the fact that after the smile and the statement, he stops and then blinks until the applause stops. If they can make fun of Sen. Dole for his propensity to talk in the third person, how do characteristics like these get ignored for McCain?

2)Which is the best name to describe McCain . . . I am trying to decide on a new nickname since McShame doesn't do it for me.

-----------a. Old Man McCain
-----------b. The Geriatric in Charge

P.S. - Exactly what do we do for a President if he (God Forbid) gets Alzheimer’s or Dementia while in office?  With President Reagan showing symptoms shortly after leaving the White House, this is a question that needs to be asked of a Man running for President around the age these problems start to show.  Does the President sign over power or if he refuses because of his disease; are we allowed to take him out of power?  Also, since McCain is highly susceptible to these ailments (more than the average because of his heroism); are we actually voting for his Vice Presidential Candidate????

The path to success is through education, it always has been and always will be. Geoffrey Canada's observations are right on the mark. This country has been dumbed down in a most egregious way over the past 30 years or so.  One would almost be tempted to think it was a plan by the ruling elite ie. GOP,  to keep the rest of us in our place.

If parents can afford good schools, there is a need  spend lots time making sure children do their mountains of homework.  This leaves parents little free time, less money for a family vacation and a feeling of never getting off the treadmill.

What has happened to our educational system over the years is a disgrace for a country with so many resources.  We continously lag far behind other countries in our educational pursuits. Judging from the poor thought process, spelling, grammer etc.in some of the posts here and elsewhere we are in very poor shape,  yet, we have the nerve to attempt to tell other countries how to run their lives.

Wow, that guy highlighted the fact that our country has dumbed itself down to the point that we elect politicians based on if we'd drink a beer with them.  Politics is the only place where "Elite" is a bad word.  And we wonder why our nation is going down the drain?
McCain cannot discuss issues to find new sources of energy, education or health care; because his focus would that this projects would be earmarks n too generous.
Secondly, McCain cares nothing about a safe environment. Otherwise, McCain wouldn’t want to destroy the planet. Neither would McCain have bombed killed and maimed innocents and our soldiers on a faux war nor would advocate education to use a tool to avenge environment for crime-ravaged communities which don’t save its people.
Now McCain should concern himself with health care. His inability to exit vehicles and apparent memory losses (he calls flip flops; America knows better) indicates early Alzheimer’s. Research could benefit McCain.

[[[Participants spent the remainder of the time talking about how to improve education, increase access to affordable health care, and provide more support for science and innovation]]]

Provide more support for science and innovation? Sure, here's a suggestion, stop threating the science industries we have and stop being critical of every successful industry in this county! The pharmaceuticals, you know that they bring us medications that help us live better lives, but  Obama and his party have been nothing but hostile to that industry. Obama's party thinks they should give away their drugs for free. "Big oil", you know the companies that fuel the country? Obama says to tax, tax, and tax them some more. The banking industry that has worked to make it at easy as possible for people to have the American Dream of owning their own home - they're villians too, all of them, even though it is just a scant few that had predatory loan practices.

On and on it goes with the Democrats and their  leader Obama. They are the onces calling for new innovations, but yet they are the ones that stand in the way of that happening.
Please post this?

As a resident of Philadelphia I find this debate very disturbing.  I live in a city where in 2007 there was an average of more than one murder a day.  Let me repeat that.  MORE THAN ONE MURDER A DAY!  Now I have hunted and have no problem with people owning guns for sportsman activities but the last time I checked people do not hunt with handguns.  I can see no wrong in placing a ban on handguns in certain areas of the country where crime is out of control.  MORE THAN A MURDER A DAY!  These guns nuts that are posting on this site make me sick.  Where do you people live?  Probably in the middle of flipping no where.  Probably in a place that would never vote to ban handguns anyway even if the court upheld DC’s handgun ban.  What is your people’s deal honestly?  People that live in the sticks have nothing to worry about.  No one is taking your guns.  However people like me that live in areas were crime is out of control would like our local government the have the option/right to make laws that protect us.  It drives me crazy that people who are not affected by this issue get to make the laws related to this issue.  Come live in my city.  Please! Come and walk around with you handgun and tell me that you are safe.  Cops walk around my city with guns and are highly trained to use them.  However, 6 have been killed over the last year.  Will you be safe from strays?  Will you be safe when someone walks up behind you and shoots you in the head and takes your money?  I would say probably not.  But then again, you people that are so adamant about having guns and who need them for self defense won’t be around Philly anyway.  You will be in the sticks shooting paper targets!
This is why I am voting for Barack Obama.

For all those who won't look at Barack's platform because of his progressive tax policy, please keep in mind one thing:  If we have a president, and a government, that can affect positive and concrete changes in the areas of energy, education, health care, infrastructure, and innovation, then the economy will tend to take care of itself.

Said differently, if you live in a country that is engaged in an aggressive energy policy, where our children are graduating from high school and going to college, where society enjoys generally good health, and where investment in infrastructure is consistent and efficient, then by design you will have an economy growing at a strong and sustainable rate, with low unemployment and inflation, and robust financial markets.

If you're rich, sure you'll pay more taxes, but your salary, bonuses, and investment returns will all be higher.  Translation:  more people win, less people lose.

Shortsightedness is a malady that comes from the right.

blah, blah, blah.  Some old line of "under my leadership we can change."  HOW?  When is the man ever going to tell us specifics in each and every one of the categories he mentions?  Mr. Obama: WORDS DO MATTER.
Let us trust in Barack Obama's intellect, commitment and compassion to move our great country and ALL its peoples forward.

PS: I don't think FR has ever posted anything I've submitted. But I'm not giving up!
It sure sounds like Senator Obama knows what's going on!  He runs circles around McCain in organizational skills.  It's that good ol' fashioned, work-hard for it upbringing!

The GOP trying to paint Obama as an elitist with a single mom who used food stamps periodicaly and scholarships for school?  Not happening!  Obama's life is the TRUE American story of opportunity!

Isn't McCain the one with 8 homes and a membership to the country club?  Check it out!
Did Obama give any idea on how he choose leaders to attend the summit?  Was this to be a long-term panel, with scheduled meetings or a rotating idea bank or is this a one-time event?
Who are McCain's advisers, if any, in these groups?
Canada's comments are interesting. I used to work in academia, and I agree that there is a sub-current of anti-intellectualism in our culture. However, I believe that this is not a new phenomenon and is not particularly stronger at this time than at other times in our history. What I find more troublesome is intellectual laziness by too many of our college students. My experience at a state university is that the vast majority of students were only interested in a "good" grade and were almost devoid of any intellectual curiosity. This was even true of the students who studied hard. They wanted to know enough to answer questions on the exam, but rarely if ever pushed the intellectual envelope. It was like teaching a bunch of sheep. The ones who were most intellectually curious were the foreign students and U.S. students who either were immigrants or whose parents were immigrants. This was not absolutely true but was true enough to be of great concern to me. I have a theory as to why this is, but that is a topic for another post.
Obama sometimes forces us out of our comfort zone.  The courage it takes to move forward is what has made this the greatest country in the world.  There are a lot of similarities in what our forefathers asked of Americans and what Obama is asking now.  Let's hope we're up to the challenge.
No way.  I want higher fuel prices, less homeowners, high food prices, more wars - especially Iran, no education for veterans - hell, no healthcare for them either.

I love the summer, more global warming!

Less personal security.  I wouldn't mind spending 11 years in prisoned without able to talk with my family!
I must say I was pleased to see a Newsweek article deconstructing the misstruths about McCain's "dr no" ad. Obama has been out in the front on alternative energy long before McCain even uttered a word about it. And it is good to see media challenge McCain on his unfounded assertions and gimmicks which seem to be more and more frequent(nervous about recent polls?). McCain's position seems to be if you don't agree with me then you must be against everything.
I've spent alot of time these last four years dreaming of a new President. I gotta say, Obama is better than what I had hoped for. I dreamed of trouncing the Republicans, but Obama is incorporating them into his administration. I'm very happy with what I've been reading about Obama's plans for his administration.
We tried the president type one would like to chugg a beer with, and look at how disasterous that turned out to be!  If America does it again, it deserves the nail in the coffin consequences it will suffer. Otherwise....

Obama, the president one can rely on for leadership out of this 8 year nightmare!
These are all lies. This meeting never happened and Obama knows nothing!!! McBush 08.
It's high time that we elected a president who is Intelligent and can chart a course for a better and brighter future.  we elected a president who you could have a beer with and all we have left is empty beer mugs.
The mechanics of this site are really starting to get tiremsome. Lost posts, no posts, no articles. Then all of a sudden...all the posts show up and you won't take anymore.

MSNBC: please fire Joe S.
I can't watch your morning show when he is on.
The latest congressional news should not be overlooked because it shows just how dismal the situation is for the GOP right now. Most notable is that the New York Republican Party continues to think, with its THIRD TIER candidates now declining to run in NY-13 in what is now sure to be a Democratic pick-up: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/06/26/down-ballot-nys-gop-sinks-further-and-gordon-smith-hugs-obama-tight/
