Obama: Unity Day

Posted: Friday, June 27, 2008 9:14 AM by Mark Murray

Unity Day is finally here in the Democratic Party. Last night, at their meeting in front of major Clinton fundraisers, the two "showered each other with praise yesterday in their first joint appearance since the end of the Democratic presidential primary season at an event in which the senator from New York urged hundreds of her top donors to get behind the party's presumptive nominee."

VIDEO: A Race for the White House panel talks about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton campaigning together Friday in Unity, New Hampshire.

"Obama faced some tough questions during the event, designed to help put 18 months of hard feelings aside and allow Democrats to focus on a general-election campaign against Republican Sen. John McCain. At one point, an attendee told Obama that if he wanted to be seen as a true leader, he needed acknowledge that sexism had played a role in the demise of Clinton's campaign. Obama agreed and said that the issue should be addressed.’

The New York Times notes that Obama said that “he had written a personal check of $2,300 to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, a good-will gesture intended to nudge his top donors to help ease Mrs. Clinton’s campaign debt and help the two Democrats move beyond their rivalry to focus on the fall contest… ‘I wrote my check to the Hillary for President Committee,’ said Mr. Obama, who was greeted with booming applause. His wife, Michelle, also contributed $2,300.”

“Obama is depending on the former first lady to give her voters and donors a clear signal that she doesn't consider it a betrayal for them to shift their loyalty his way. … Clinton, for her part, needs the Illinois senator's help in paying down her $10 million campaign debt, plus an assurance that she will be treated respectfully as a top surrogate on the campaign trail and at the Democratic Party convention later this summer. Some of her supporters want Clinton's name to be placed in nomination for a roll call vote at the Denver convention, an effort she hasn't formally discouraged.”

An Associated Press-Yahoo News poll found 53 percent of the Democrats who favored Clinton for the nomination two months ago now back Obama for president. That's an improvement from April, when only 40 percent of Clinton supporters said they would back Obama over Republican John McCain.

Bloomberg News takes a look at Obama's "cool" image. "Obama, who grew up in laid-back Hawaii, cultivates an image of cool. Yet friends and colleagues said his unflappable demeanor masks a competitive streak that fueled his ascent from average student to Harvard Law Review president to state lawmaker to Congress and possibly the White House. Obama, 46, examined this drive in his 2006 book ‘The Audacity of Hope.’”

“‘I understand politics as a full-contact sport, and minded neither the sharp elbows nor the occasional blind-side hit,'’ Obama wrote about his early political life." More: "Supporters and opponents alike have speculated whether Obama's even keel amounted to potential weakness as Clinton, 60, and the presumptive Republican nominee, Arizona Senator John McCain, 71, stepped up their attacks on the less politically experienced Obama during the primary season.”

“Such concerns, longtime friends said, are unfounded and don't take into account Obama's fervent drive to prevail, whether in his quest for the highest office, on the basketball court, or in a rural Pennsylvania bowling alley, where, in March, after several gutter balls, he stayed longer than expected and even solicited tips from a 8-year-old boy."

The Boston Globe: “Grove Parc has become a symbol for some in Chicago of the broader failures of giving public subsidies to private companies to build and manage affordable housing - an approach strongly backed by Obama as the best replacement for public housing,” the Boston Globe writes. As a state senator, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee coauthored an Illinois law creating a new pool of tax credits for developers. As a US senator, he pressed for increased federal subsidies. And as a presidential candidate, he has campaigned on a promise to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund that could give developers an estimated $500 million a year.

“But a Globe review found that thousands of apartments across Chicago that had been built with local, state, and federal subsidies - including several hundred in Obama's former district - deteriorated so completely that they were no longer habitable. Some of the residents of Grove Parc say they are angry that Obama did not notice their plight. The development straddles the boundary of Obama's state Senate district. Many of the tenants have been his constituents for more than a decade.

I'm interested to see what the reaction is to the Obama & Clinton Show later today.  Specifically, these so-called "P.U.M.A." people.

GET IT OVER IT....  this includes the media too!!!

There are many woman who face this everyday and we don't/can't WHINE on and on about.  It's the biggest sterotype out there about women.  We want to play on the field, but can't accept the fact that we could lose on our own merit or lack of it.  Just like we can win on it.
Hillary's name needs to be placed for a roll call vote in Denver because she would then win the nomination since the supers must be having 2nd thoughts about this fraud Obama.  But you know he will never permit that.  Well, if he blocks  the roll call vote that will be another reason for not voting for him.  He has shown he cannot win without the support of Dean, Pelosi, Clyburn, Brazile, etc.  They are why I have changed my affiliation from democrat to independent.  I no longer support the party of the the self-absorbed, not the party of the people.
i think that obama cutting a check as well as his wife for the maximum amount is huge.  Who would have thought that at the end of this process obama, who only made just below 1 million dollars mainly from booksales, would be helping the clintons who make close to 30 million a year.

Just wondering.
If Obama is going to "Write a Check" to pay for Clintons Debt, then the Clinton Supporters who had already given the maximum to Clinton write checks to Obama is tat a back door way of getting around the limits on campaign donations?
Money talks folks. Forty six hundred bucks from the Obama's pocket was a great jesture.

Now, all you NOBAMA'S, get out your checkbooks, and write with all the fervor with which you spew your hatred for the Obama's everyday.

Your satisfaction is in hating, not in supporting.

I appreciate Hillary introducing her donors to Barack. She is willing help him, and I am willing to give her credit for it.
I think Obama can now pass over Clinton for Veep and say "look, I helped pay this woman's debts, what more do you want?"
My reaction to the whole sexism thing is "sexism my bleeding arse!"  It was Clinton's mismanagement of her own campaign that did her in, requiring the guy who won WITHOUT GOING INTO DEBT to bail her behind out.
Happy Days are Here Again as the Democratic Party comes together today in Unity.  What a great winner Barack is to write Hillary a maxed out check to show his good intentions.  That's leadership by example, something the repugnant ones aren't familiar with.

Go Obama 08/12!
We all know Bill hates Barack and Michelle hates Hillary.  So lets get this charade over with, move her die hard women and Hispanic voters over to Obama so we can get on with winning this election and getting the country going again.

You clearly don't understand the process, Lee.  Obama has no say on who does or does not get "nominated" for the floor roll call vote and does not have the ability to block a roll call vote from the floor during the convention.

It's the DNC's show first.

No back door at all.

The $2300 limit is for one candidate.  A donor may give that amount to more than one candidate.
If 18 million Clinton supporters would send her a buck and a quarter each...she could pay off her debts and herself too!  Are these really loyal supporters?

GA will turn Blue!!!!!!!!!
How did sexism bring down such a poorly run campaign? Obama you are becoming an appeaser. Reverse-sexism saved Hillary after she teared up. And just as the black vote gave Obama some states, The female vote bolstered a chameleon of a candidate until desperation made her grow.

Why is it Obama's burden to address sexism when Clinton would not? He addressed race when it was pertinent, not after the nomination was over.

Some Clinton supporters are acting like little girls instead of women. I'm sure many feminists are very embarrassed.

If this PUMA type reaction hurts Obama, I'm certain the black community will rightfully hold it against the next major female candidate.

I've also noticed these so called supporters have left Hillary twisting in the wind financially. Even her campaign was disappointed at how donations dried up so quickly. If her 18 million supporters gave $5, that's $90 million, she only needs $10 million to pay vendors.

It literally shows, the majority of Hillcrat types were worthless or in the closet Republicans stirring trouble.

Real supporters donated to her & now support Obama, even with a bit of sadness in their hearts.
Im still trying to figure why should we "obama supports" pay for HRC debt. She & Bill knowingly incurred that debt. And I understand why Obama paid the 2300 but why should we? are the clinton supports, all 18 millions, contributing?
I think as well that him helping her with her debt (which is toward the vendors and others she owns money to, not her personal loan) gets him off the hook when he doesn't pick her as VP. Anyone still complaining if he doesn't pick her will be showing themselves to be beyond petty and spiteful.

It kinda sickens me though that he has to bend over backwards like this. For no other reason I think other then to make sure she doesn't undermine him in the hopes of running again in four years. You have to know in the back of his mind that though is running around like crazy. It's the whole "can he trust her or not" situation which is a prime reason why she won't be VP.

Not saying it's true or she would actually be like that but to much has happen to simply sweep that thought under the run or out the door. Even she has to know that people will be thinking it (unfairly or not) which is why I think she'll be bringing her A game to not only kill that thought in people's head but also to make up for Bill Clinton's timid apperance.
It's HRC"s fault she is in debt that much, so she should be the one to pay for it. The race was over long before she dropped out. but she chose to stay in the race anyways, and as a result incurred millions of dollars in debt.
We need to move on and focus on bringing the HRC and Obama supporters together, not on getting Clinton out of the hole because she doesnt know how to run a campaign.
Though I would certainly have voted for HRC had she won the nomination I am now even more grateful that did not happen. I guess she is more important than any other candidate who has ever run??? Give me a break. There are those who would respect her much more if she acted like an adult. Much more coverage of "poor" Hill and pouting Bill will drive many of us to tell Obama to ditch the both of them. His message doesn't need their approval to win in Nov.
I live in Brooklyn, where almost all the elected officials at every level supported Clinton. Given that she's our senator, that's understandable. Right now, every one of these key Clinton supporters are climbing over themselves to support Obama. I know the polls about the weak support for him from her supporters, but from my somewhat-behind-the-scenes view, Obama will have the full support of the entire Clinton machinery in the largest Democratic county in the country.
.I agree with the above post that calls for her 18 million supporters to pay down her debt. Where are you when she needs you the most? I, for one, will support the Democratic nominee and NOT someone who made 109 million dollars last year and is whining about a debt she shouldn't have occurred in the first place. If I overspend, who's going to bail me out? She made her bed.............
