First thoughts: Get your gun

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** Get your gun: Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision on the 2nd Amendment elevated an issue -- guns -- that hadn’t received that much attention until now. Remembering that the subject hurt Al Gore in 2000 and somewhat damaged Kerry’s image in 2004 (after his widely panned hunting excursion) will guns also be a problem for Obama? On the one hand, many of the swing states (actually check that, EVERY swing state) are places where the electorate tends to have pro-gun views and where the Mike Bloomberg position wouldn’t fly. On the other hand, as some have pointed out today, the Supreme Court ruling may actually help Obama because Republicans might no longer be able to argue that Democrats want to take your guns away. “The Supreme Court has said you can't do that,” Democratic pollster Geoff Garin told the Washington Post. In addition, since Gore’s loss in 2000, many Dems have moved to the center on guns. Nothing was more emblematic of that than Obama’s statement on the court’s decision yesterday. "As president, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne.” And then there’s the question of whether wedge issues like guns -- or abortion or the death penalty or gay marriage -- will resonate at all in what’s looking to be a change election. Also, McCain hasn’t been seen as the NRA’s best friend in Congress. So while the pro-gun crowd is very leery of Obama, they aren’t necessarily that fired up about McCain.

VIDEO: In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals right to own a gun, outlining the Constitutional protections for the 80 million Americans who do. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

*** Moving to the center, moving to the right: Pegged to Obama’s statement on guns, there are quite a few press accounts today noting how the Illinois senator has moved to the center on several issues (guns, FISA, death penalty for child rapists). And the Republican National Committee is seizing on these moves to label him a “typical politician.” But what we find fascinating is that as Obama has moved to the center on some thorny subjects, McCain keeps on making overtures to the right. At his meeting yesterday with social conservatives in Ohio, according to participants, McCain said that he was open to learning more about their opposition to embryonic stem cell research (which he supports), that he would talk more openly about his opposition to gay marriage, and that he would listen seriously to their requests that he choose an anti-abortion running mate (bad news for Tom Ridge?). In modern politics, the formula has always been the same: You curry favor with your base in the primaries and then you tack to the center in the general election. McCain isn’t necessarily following this path. Then again, McCain didn’t win his nomination by running to the right, either. Nothing he’s done this campaign year has been conventional.

*** A “typical” attack: Going back to the RNC labeling Obama a “typical politician,” it’s worth remembering that Clinton tried this, too. The problem with trying to use this line with Obama is that the historical nature of his candidacy makes it harder for the voter to think the word "typical" when they see him. (And, of course, Clinton had her own problems on this issue.) That said, Obama continues to fuel this line of attack by making conventional decisions like ducking the town hall idea, flipping on campaign finance, trying to straddle the fence on guns, etc. And unlike McCain, Obama doesn’t have years of good will with his brand; he only really has about 18 months. McCain has made a lot of subtle shifts away from his so-called maverick independent streak. But because his brand was cemented over years, he’s been given more of a benefit of the doubt with the public. Obama’s brand reservoir isn’t as deep, and he should be much more sensitive to this collecting narrative that he isn’t what he claims.

*** We are family … get up everybody and sing: Today is finally the day: Early this afternoon, Obama and Clinton will rally together in Unity, NH. Despite reports in the press, the Clinton-Obama rift is not as wide as some might think. The people who are most upset are major fundraisers who aren't happy about their role in the Obama campaign and, frankly, about their future place in the party. Many of these folks have been major players in the Democratic Party for 16 years, living off the reflected glory of the Clintons. Now, they aren't going to be the top dogs anymore and that's been a tough pill to swallow. It's simply human nature. That said, Obama’s meeting last night with Clinton and her top donors appeared to be a mostly positive event. Yes, there were some tough questions. And, yes, some of Clinton’s top supporters are still upset that Hillary won’t be the nominee. But as one attendee told First Read, Obama was received fairly well (remember, these are her top supporters). And he, in turn, was pretty humble and magnanimous.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd talks about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's joint event in Unity, New Hampshire and discusses who needs the event more.

*** Just asking: Who benefits more from today's Clinton-Obama event? Who needs it more? Two weeks ago, the unanimous CW would have said Obama. But now, an argument can be made that Clinton needs this event as much as Obama... Considering Obama’s place in the polls, it’s clear he’s already gotten his Clinton bounce. Today’s event is about Clinton showing the country one more time that she’s a good loser. Compare what Clinton has done for Obama with what McCain didn’t really do for Bush until much later in the 2000 campaign.

*** “There are no safe GOP seats in this election”: Just how worried are House Republicans about November? The AP reports that GOP leaders -- after their losses in special elections this year in Illinois, Louisiana, and Mississippi -- have come out with a report that underscores the potential for big losses this fall and that recommends Republican candidates show “deep empathy towards the voters” and rely on local issues rather than national ones. "This is a challenging environment," NRCC communications director Karen Hanretty told the AP. "Any Republican running for office has to run basically on an independent platform, localize the race and not take anything for granted. There are no safe Republican seats in this election." The mood among House Republicans is VERY bad; it’s as if they all went into the field in their own supposedly safe districts last month and came out with bad numbers.

*** On the trail: Elsewhere today, McCain is in Ohio, holding a town hall then a media avail at a GM plant in Warren and later raising money in Youngstown and Hunting Valley.

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts.

- I sure hope today’s event with Barack & Hillary is a huge success.  Has anyone else noticed besides me that HRC seems, oh I don’t know, softer?  She is almost enjoyable right now.
- If the event in Unity, NH is big today (and I mean thousands of people), why is it being held on a Friday?  Are we being set up for a big announcement; maybe she has been selected to be his VP?
- Why aren’t there more big events for Barack?  It’s almost like that has become our natural comfort zone with him.  It is the setting and environment we all came to enjoy most.  Frankly, I miss the huge crowd events.
- Why does the Gallup daily tracking poll show Obama and McCain close on Mondays, expands in Obama’s favor during the week, and close again prior to the weekend?
- Does anyone else feel the media is pushing everything towards a close election?  It’s almost as if they will not let Obama get too far ahead; and if he does, they try to reel him back in.  Keith does not do this on Countdown.  Just listen to the undertones from Matthews, Todd and others at NBC and you will feel this too.  If Obama has a good day, see how quickly Rev. Wright & the elitist comments start coming back.
- I am still pushing for Nancy Pelosi to be the VP nominee.  Anyone else agree?

O'Biden
Hope and History Rhyme!!
theres too many issues in this election to vote on guns.  both the candidates agree on the decision and we should leave it alone.  Also i cant wait to see the unity event in unity today.

It's funny, I was one of the Obama supporters who thought that the fact that Hillary was still in the race after it was apparent that she's lose was a selfish thing for her to do.

But I now see the wisdom in it !

She actually helped Obama and made him a better candidate.

The recycled Republicana attacks seem old and tired just like their candidate.

We have to credit the Clinton Kitchen Sink strategy that toughened up Obama.

He seems battle tested and ready.
He looks sharp and ready to answer all the tough questions.

He is always respectful over McSame's service even though the republicans don't respect Obama's record (Don't they know that this doesn't work? Ask Hillary).

He's smartly moving to the center ... and outmanouvering McCain.

The last politician who was this cunning was Bill Clinton.

I'm sure that when Bill watched Obama's press conference recently he said "wow"

He's the real deal my friends, Obama is !
Why is his being pro-2nd Amendment and pro-death penalty for child rapists such a shock?  On the first he specialized in Constitutional Law, and the 2nd Amendment is pretty explicit.  The role of the President is to protect the Constitution.  Duh.  On the second he's got two young daughters.  I'm about as liberal as they come, and if anybody raped MY young daughter (or son) I'd gladly seek the death penalty.  Of course, that's an emotional reaction, which is why we let the Supreme Court settle such things.
Just wondering.
If Obama is going to "Write a Check" to pay for Clintons Debt, then the Clinton Supporters who had already given the maximum to Clinton write checks to Obama is tat a back door way of getting around the limits on campaign donations?
Let's do the math

The Economy - McBush - Oil Companies - War - Fear Mongering - Wall Street crooks(Eroneers) = A Better Life
                                                                  (you remember ERON)

Watch This It will Blow your mind! It's long but worth it

No where to run and no where to hide from being labeled as Bush Appeasers, the repugnant ones are going to lose a lot of seats in Congress this year.  Well it's about time the wicked ones are taken down a notch due to their pandering ways that have wrecked our economy and driven oil above $140 a barrel.

Everything that's wrong with our country is the fault of the repugnant ones and now it's time they pay for their wicked ways.

Only Barack Obama can bring back honesty and integrity to the White House.

Go Obama 08/12!
Obama went out and got himself his Billy the Kidd starter kit right after the ruling.

How anyone can stomach this fake is beyond me.
How did it hurt Gore?  Didn't he win the popular vote????
Sum thang ta stick tu?
First Read, I see there is nothing about McNutts "wife beating" joke in Nevada reported by ABC. I am sure Hillery suporters who are on the fence might be interested in that story.
Hello we are "typical" and ordinary Americans that want answers from the GOP madness and they give us character assassination.
Helloooo, if you are in politics, most likely you are a politician.  The GOP is pathetic!

MSNBC, do your job and put this back on the war and the economy.  America deserves a better answer to the war than "so"!  The GOP needs to answer for how jacked up this economy is and we don't hear slander or pointing acroos the aisle when they have clearly been in the driver seat for 7.5 years.
Just wondering.
If Obama is going to "Write a Check" to pay for Clintons Debt, then the Clinton Supporters who had already given the maximum to Clinton write checks to Obama is tat a back door way of getting around the limits on campaign donations?

Now you see how the game is played. Democrats were shouting from the hill tops 'Get the money out of politics' a few years back. Well, unless they have the money.

Anyone see Morning Joe and their discussion of the "Republican brand" this year, along with how McFossil's being run? It's so fun to watch Republicans squirm in their conservative seats as they try to come up with reasons (ANY reasons) why Mcfossil should be the next POTUS. Now they're back to "experience" when, in fact, he has no more experience than Barack. They kept saying McFossil's campaign is being run poorly by Rich and Black. Did it EVER dawn on them that McFossil is a FLAWED candidate? Not even his own Party can rally around him. If they wanted to Beat Obama in the fall, they shouldn't have put up a 71 year old war monger that voted with Bush 100% of the time this year and 95% of the time last year as their candidate. The country can't afford 4 more years of failed Bush policies. This election isn't going to be close, my friends, (as McFossil constantly says)it's going to be a Democratic landslide! They can thank Karl Rove for single-handedly taking the Republican Party down with him and George W Bush! Thanks Karl! Looks like you did something for the Nation afterall! Go Obama '08!
Obama is not your 'typical polititian'. He's far below that standard - more like a 'snake in the grass'.
Obama went out and got himself his Billy the Kidd starter kit right after the ruling.

How anyone can stomach this fake is beyond me.

Really?  Show where Obama stated his position was totally against any gun ownership, that he did not believe the 2d Amendment protected an indivudal right to carry a gun, and that he would not uphold the Constitution as interpretted by the Sup Ct.?

I just love people who post outrageious lies without any support, like Mr. Granger from Holden Texas.  They expose themselves for the frauds they are.
Now you see how the game is played. Democrats were shouting from the hill tops 'Get the money out of politics' a few years back. Well, unless they have the money.

Obama did get the politics out of his own campaign fundraising because its almost entirely from millions of ordinary donors, i.e., the general citizenry!

Obama will be the next US President....repukes and otherwise McCain supporters...get used to it!
Obama is your typical polititian. He said no lobbyists on his staff, so what about Obama being four square behind the ethanol industry (corn covers his state) and him having Dachele as a senior advisor (on the boards of 2 ethanol companies)?
It's pretty easy seeing Obama's support base. But considerably harder to find McCains. He's all dressed up and no place to go.  If he moves right, he gets tied to Bush. If he moves center (to be a maverick) he loses the neocons. If he picks Romney, he loses the evangelicals, if he picks a pro choice VP he loses the pro life people.  Likewise, I don't see a large group of "worker bees" ready to register voters, get out the vote, put up a million signs, donate even small amounts of money.
Republican congressmen are right.  There are few safe seats.   2008 will be a very bad year....for Repblicans.
Yesterday the NRA file a lawsuit here in chicago to challenge the laws here. the mayor of chicago richard Daley will fight this all the way back to the supreme court. a city like chicago, does not need to have any more gun on the streets here!! my god already this summer(only a few days old) there have been dozens of killings!!! drive byes!! there was a drive by on a funeral presession!!! yea!! there is no reason why you should have to own a hand gun in the CITY OF CHICAGO!! WHY WOULD YOU NEED IT!! the only people who need them are the police!!! plain and simple!!! the police!!! with the rate of robbery, the hand guns that if allowed WILL FALL IN TO THE WRONG HANDS!!!

LIKE I SAID YESTERDAY!! JOHN MCCAIN DOES NOT HAVE TO SEE THE VIOLENCE EVER DAY!! THE SUPREME DOES NOT HAVE TO SEE THE VIOLENCE EVERY DAY!!! JOHN MCCAIN LEASE COME TO THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO AND SEE FIRST HAND!! THE MUST BE DIFFERENT LAWS FOR DIFFERENT PLACES!! THE LAWS IN RUAL AREAS MUST BE DIFFERENT THAN MAJOR CITIES!!! LIKE OBAMA HAS SAID WHAT WORKS IN CHICAGO WILL NOT WORK IN CHEYENNE!! AND VICE VERCA!!!
Jim Granger from TX

I'm OK with the "fake". What turns my stomach are the chicken hawks. You know the kind of guys who love guns so they can shoot small birds that are brought in to hunt. These guys beat on their chest about how weak everyone else is. They think you keep America strong by invading Arabia. They won't serve. Their kids don't serve, but they don't have any problem preying on the patriotism of others to send them off to war.
Maybe McCain is different. I believe him when he says he expects a victory. I think he'll bring the draft back, which is probably something we all should consider when we support war. Suit up Jim.
"...But because his brand was cemented over years, he’s been given more of a benefit of the doubt with the public."

No. That's not true. He's given more of a benefit by you "Kewl Kidz" of the beltway who like riding the Straight Spin bus and eating the multi-millionaire Sedona ribs.

Why do you continue to conflate your opinions with those of the public? We aren't on the bus and can't afford the ribs now, nevermind what it will be like after 4 more years of Republican malfeasance. Please don't pretend to speak for us.
How did it hurt Gore?  Didn't he win the popular vote????
gba, ithaca, ny (Sent Friday, June 27, 2008 9:37 AM)

-----------
He won the popular vote by winning the popular vote in non-gun culture states by large percentages, and losing the Electoral College [but still maintaining a national propular vote lead] because he lost by slim margins in pro-gun states, like his home state of Tenn. for example.

Obama is a very keen politician, and presidential candidate, for he has learned from his two dem. predecessors' mistakes...and he's not taking anything from the repukes without an immeidate stand up response and fight...gee...kinda reminds me of the last successful democratic presidential candidate.
Jim Granger in Holden, TX-apparently you missed the part where he TAUGHT Constitutional Law and the role of the President is to UPHOLD that same document.  The fact that he backs the Supreme Court on the rulings is exactly what he is supposed to do not freak out or "get his Billy the Kid starter kit" as you so eloquently put it.

I can't help but think that the Republicans should be VERY afraid because of what has been done to this country over the last 8 yrs.  They call the current congress a lame duck congress well exactly how effective would you be if every time you voted on something and sent it to the President he Vetoed it?  Not very effective would you?  It also strikes me as odd that Bush hardly EVER vetoed anything when the Republicans ran Congress. Anyone else see this besides me?

No wonder the approval rating for Congress is low as heck.  It's not their fault though.

As for the donations for Hillary, Barack stroked a $2300 check for her last night (which is the maximum that he can give) and he is also asking that his supporters help her pay off her debt.  That is the coolest thing, IMHO.  He didn't have to but it shows no hard feelings.
"Just wondering.
If Obama is going to "Write a Check" to pay for Clintons Debt, then the Clinton Supporters who had already given the maximum to Clinton write checks to Obama is tat a back door way of getting around the limits on campaign donations?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

No. The most Obama's can give is $4600 ($2300 from each of them). 4,600 compared to over 22,000,000 is nothing. His donation did not "pay off her debt", it was merely symbolic - Obama's way of asking his supporters to help Hillary out. There is no "back door" advantage here for Obama.
It's so fascinating to see the top journalists reporting Obama's move to the center when anyone who ever bothered to research his positions could clearly see he has always been a less extreme liberal and pragmatist. These journalists demonstrate that they succumbed to the Republican characterizing of Obama as the most liberal of all senators. He was always the more moderate compared to Hillary, John Edwards and Chris Dodd. These journalists are so desperate to write something they keep trotting out the old stories from every past election and just paste in the current names. The media is absolutely pathetic!
Next we're going to see Obama riding the mechanical bull at some cowboy bar. You just know it.
"That said, Obama continues to fuel this line of attack by making conventional decisions like ducking the town hall idea, flipping on campaign finance, trying to straddle the fence on guns, etc. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So clearly it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that I don't agree with the above statement. And here's why:

Senator Obama has ALWAYS proposed that the only way to get things done is for us to work TOGETHER. Working together means you have to COMPROMISE. There is no other way. While the media has great fun calling it flip flopping, I would much rather have  50% better healthcare than the status quo. I would much rather have 50% of the troops home from Iraq than the status quo. I would much rather have a 50% more environmentally friendly energy policy than the one we have now.

Good government is not about "my way or the highway". It is about incremental changes in the right direction. Senator Obama is the candidate to make that happen. THAT is what America needs - PROGRESS - not more high minded debates about conservative and liberal philosophies.

P.S. Ducking town hall meetings? Why can't Senator McCain COMPROMISE and come to an agreement with Senator Obama?

Flipping on campaign finance? Senator Obama made a conditional statement in support of accepting campaing finance, and those conditions were not met.

Straddling the fence on guns? Senator Obama was in favor of the DC ban, and the Supreme Court disagreed. Is he supposed to cry about it? He focused on the good things in the ruling, and proposed ways to move forward within the constraints of the new ruling. Isn't that what we want our leaders to do - accept reality and move forward?
Also looking forward to Unity. Mrs. Clinton has made the difficult step to back her party's candidate but I continue to get the impression it is for her own good somewhat and not necessarily a whole hearted approach. Will wonder still why the protracted "mourning" period and the continued coverage of Pres. Clinton being "miffed." Kudos to the Obamas for playing along gracefully. How much of the campaign debt was run up after the conclusion was forgone?
"McCain has made a lot of subtle shifts away from his so-called maverick independent streak. But because his brand was cemented over years, he’s been given more of a benefit of the doubt with the public."
-------------------------------------------------

Once again Murray's bias is showing.

First, Obama did NOT "flip" on public campaign financing because he never agreed to accept it in the first plade. Repeated assertions that he made such an agreement is what Josef Goebbels called the the "Big Lie" method.

Second, McCain has not made "subtle shifts" in his position. He flipped on off-shore drilling, he flipped so hard on immigration that he said he wouldn't even vote for his own bill.  And he's made numerous other radical reversals in position, not "subtle shifts."

And what's with the "brand" buzzword? Why is this now being used all the time? To borrow from a Republican congressman, McCain's "brand" is bad dogfood that should be taken off the shelves, despite the desperate attempts made by the corporate media to salvage his sinking campaign.
Maybe McCain is different. I believe him when he says he expects a victory. I think he'll bring the draft back, which is probably something we all should consider when we support war. Suit up Jim.

---------

Already did Stacey. And so has my son.

And that is certainly news on the draft. What are your sources?
What does Clinton need to do to truly help make her supporters not vote for McCain?

She needs to publicly say, preferably at today's event, that she is not the "friend" of McCain that he implies, and that voting for McCain would be voting to throwaway the country's future. Obama needs to remain positive in his message, but Clinton doesn't have to be when false statements are made about her from the Republicans.
With a name like "Barack Obama" it sure is goin' to be hard to get that "typical" label to stick.

The stupid GOP just maybe shooting themselves in the foot.  Go ahead - it will be fun to watch!
Really?  Show where Obama stated his position was totally against any gun ownership, that he did not believe the 2d Amendment protected an indivudal right to carry a gun, and that he would not uphold the Constitution as interpretted by the Sup Ct.?

===========

Pat. Thanks for your response. Obama is a Chicago polititian, he endorsed his mayor, who has strict anti-gun laws (ie., no guns), and the Cook county president, who has strict anti-guns (ie., no guns). They both endorse Obama too. So now your here telling us that Obama is not endorse strict anti-gun laws when his entire history shows that he does?

Pat, you might want to read up on what Obama has done for his state of Illinois regarding 2nd amendment rights. I think you'll be shocked how anti-gun he is. And that is why I call him a fake today.
Jeff D Evanston IL. - so all those gun laws in Chicago and yet all that violence?  Sounds like the old west has been alive and well all along in Chicago, DC and in many of our major cities.
Steve NewYork NY (Sent Friday, June 27, 2008 9:26 AM)

I agree, he is definitely battle tested.  I can't imagine there being much more to disclose after the primary.  That was a wild ride.
Clinton and Obama are both better political figures.

It is always said, "Iron Sharpens Iron!"

Have anyone else noticed a better Democratic Party emerging in this 21st Century?  Amazing!

The GOP is still running around in the dark trying to run a smear campaign.
[[It's so fascinating to see the top journalists reporting Obama's move to the center when anyone who ever bothered to research his positions could clearly see he has always been a less extreme liberal and pragmatist]]

His voting record as a state senator and US senate is 100% liberal as defined by both liberal and conservative watch dog groups. Name one thing were he hasn't been an extreme liberal.
"Considering Obama’s place in the polls, it’s clear he’s already gotten his Clinton bounce."

*Rub my eyes and re-reads*

Did First Read just make a CLEAR and ACCURATE statement about Obama's standing in the polls? This day just got a whole lot better! :)

Obama/Biden '08/'12
Jim Granger-sheesh, you must have missed the part where he said "As president, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. I know that what works in Chicago may not work in Cheyenne.”

DC banned guns because they became known as the Murder Capital of the WORLD.  Not just the US but the WORLD.  When they banned guns the murder rate dropped.  DC isn't as large as Chicago is and I'm sure there aren't enough police to actually uphold the ban on guns there but someone needs to do some creative thinking to at least get them in some type of "check" because people are dying on a daily basis and it's not just for "protection".  CHILDREN are standing at bus stops and being shot.  What kind of mess is THAT?  Who was protecting themselves waiting for the bus???

That is why there should be some type of exceptions to this law but there can't be because it has to be applied straight across the board.  But again, since he said what works in one place doesn't work in another, he was right on the money with that statement.
Obama is not the "typical polician" because he has:

No experience.
No solutions, only speeches.
No love of country.
No keeping his word.
The dems have moved towards the center on guns????!!!

how did you come to this conclusion when Fienstein/schumer and pelosi are criticizing the supreme court decesion as we speak.  Just media bias trying to soften the impact on obama as this wil truly elevate this issue and bring out his true liberal orientation.

Tell me what you think I want to hear;   i will listen with an extremely judgemental ear as I do not believe you obama.

Mccain has stated his position extremely clearly: NO NEW restrictions.   so simple so straightforward

obama talks out of both sides of his mouth.   You are a flopper and panderer and I know you really are not sincere.   Mccain you have my vote.
"Nothing he’s done this campaign year has been conventional."
You know what, I notice you post some comments and others you choose to ignore.  I am going to post this anyway.  You probably will not let others read it, but at least you will.
WHAT AN IDIOTIC COMMENT!  Nothing he has done this campaign year has been conventional?  Wow!  Too bad there are too many who will be swayed by such ridiculous statement.  Perhaps I reacted too strongly but I thought that was too extreme using the the word nothing.  You have got to somewhat think about the fact that when you inserted such statement inside a so-called report it would sound like the truth.
The Chicago mayor, Mayor Richard Daley, went off on a rant on how that ruling didn't affect him or his city. Daley and Obama are tight. I would imagine Obama will need to talk to Daley to explain to him the law of the land is the law of the land. If people in the murder capital of the US (Chicago) choose to defend themselves, they can now do so.
"There are no safe Republican seats".  Thank God!  I've always said, "What's bad for the GOP is good for America". Maybe our GOP/Bush-battered country will finally get a break!
Jim Granger,

He explained the gun position.  In urban areas, gun control is necessary.  Unlawful gun ownership is a problem.  Crime is a problem.  Enforcing laws in crime ridden neighborhoods with high unlawful gun ownership is a problem.  Many of us who live in urban core recognize that.  I am not trying to subvert lawful gun ownership.  I am in favor of aiding the militia (in this case, local law enforcement) in their quest to fight crime.  Yes, it is complicated.  But I think we can all get on board with lawful gun ownership.
For the cynics that have posted suspiciously about the Obama's sincerity in lauding Hillary with praise, I have a question for you. Would you post nice if Barack, and Michelle listened to Hillary's speech, the Saturday after Obama got the number of needed delegates, and came away unmoved with comments such as, 'the Clinton's can never be trusted because they ran a vicious campaign'?

I know you hate to be called racists, so I won't. I don't know where your unreasonable hatred comes from.

None of the candidates are without blemish. However, unlike other posters, your railings know only one source of disdain, the Obamas.

Why do the Clintons, and McCain get a pass over their failings, but you deny the Obama's the slightest bit of tolerance in your hearts?
I can't wait till November, it's my birthday! VA
--you must have missed the part where he [Obama]said "As president, I will uphold the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun-owners, hunters, and sportsmen. --

Well, that's awfully big of Obama. He's going to uphold the rights you say? What a guy. Well, until he does otherwise, right?

-- DC banned guns because they became known as the Murder Capital of the WORLD --

Well, except for those genocides going on in Africa, and little dust ups in the middle east, and lets not forget China.

Exactly. It shouldn't be a shock at all. Anyone that has paid any attention to Sen. Obama and his background should know this is how he'd respond. Like said he's a constitutional lawyer and professor. Of course he's going to be in favor of protecting the Constitution and upholding it. However that doesn't mean there can't be restrictions on gun ownership. There is no reason at all for anyone to own automatic weapons for example. Hand guns and hunting rifles are okay. The 2nd Amendment allows for restrictions. Those crazy about gun ownership should know this.

As for the death penalty it's simple. He's a father of two young girls. Anyone even bothering to question that is just crazy and really looking for something, anything to hit Sen. Obama on. The man isn't a pacifist or he most certainly isn't anti-war.
Why is it that people who virulently tout "THE TRUTH" are often so lacking in THE FACTS?
