Veepstakes update: 'Next generation'

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
THE SHORT LIST.
New York Times gets to the bottom of John McCain’s standard answer on potential veeps. Insert-name-here is part of the “the next generation of leadership” for the party.

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO. Sunday shows have their fill of potential VPs, including Wes Clark (D), Joe Lieberman (I-?), Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), ex-Rep. Rob Portman (R-OH), and Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA).

UNITY! Hillary Clinton referred to the combined 36 million votes for her and Obama becoming an “unstoppable force for change” now that they’re together.

ON THE RECORD. CNN has some more reaction from Portman yesterday on his potential selection: “Well, you know, I’m happy to be home,” he said. “I commuted between Washington and Ohio where we are now for 15 years, and about nine months, so I made the decision to come home and it’s been great. I’ve got three teenagers, so I’m not looking for a way back to Washington right now."

BUZZ METER. Grover Norquist called ObamaJohn Kerry with a tan.” For VP, he likes Jindal or Pawlenty for VP.

Chris Dodd “has emerged as a hero for the netroots and for opponents of the Dems' FISA cave-in because of his steady opposition to telecom immunity and his promise to filibuster it.”

US News calls the VP decision the toughest one for McCain. Most of the names are familiar, with eBay CEO Meg Whitman listed as a wild card. And the piece includes one suggestion: to take a cue from Reagan and wait until the convention, after Democrats have made their picks.

The magazine also looks at Obama’s decision ahead, saying his pick will likely try to offset some of his weaknesses.

ELECTORAL MATH. FL Gov. Charlie Crist (R) says Florida is going to be “tight.” “These are two strong candidates and I don’t know which way it goes.”

CHATTERING CLASS. Chris Cillizza makes the case against Hillary Clinton (as she spoke in Unity, N.H., with Obama). Among the reasons not to? She may turn off some indies, there would be concern about a co-presidency, and Bill Clinton.

E-VEEP. Bill Richardson fired up his email list and asked supporters to sign a petition urging Pres. Bush to sign the new G.I. Bill of Rights.

I always thought Kerry needed something besides the botox.
Is the question mark by Liebermann's name because FR forgot where he's from?

I think it more appropriate to place a question mark where his party affiliation is indicated.
I don't want to lose a Senator to the vice presidency.  If we had to,...it should come from a Blue Governor state.  I really like Joe Biden and Jim Webb.  The GI Bill is important and I would encourage every patriot who supports our troops to get on the horn, send an e-mail or otherwise contact Bush and let your voice be heard.  Otherwise the legacy he leaves us with is despair.

Mr. Dodd rewrote the accounting rules that allowed Arthur Andersen to cover up for Enron.

Mr. Dodd and Mr. Shelby have co sponsored FHA Housing Stabilization and Homeownership Retention Act of 2008 which was written word for word by Bank of America.

--Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't G.W. Bush win with like 52-54 million votes.  Oh-ohhhhhh ...
Did anyone notice that once you go down one layer of VP candidates the pickings become real slim.  How many of the people listed do you want to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I'm still an Obama/Hagel fan.
I can't believe that idiot Rush, and the rest of the neocon repubs think that Bobby Jindal is their answer to our 'Golden Warrior', as they call Senator Obama in the UK.

The man has'nt courage enough to honor his first name given him by his parents. Jindal is the fraternity brother of that SC self hater Clarence Thomas.

Jindal could'nt measure up to Obama, anymore than one of those spare ribs McCain shoves down his throat on the weekends.

No, sir, you won't catch me calling this elitist and elitist!
Isn't Jindal - besides being too young and "inexperienced" - off limits now because of chemical castration and his rabid support for intelligent design? Hard to win moderates with those stances.

Grover, please go back to Sesame Street- oops- I mean K street. The whole "Repugs take over the world" thing isn't really working well. Oh, and if you have any money in the Market it may be gone today...
I liked John Kerry very much as the Democratic nominee and he would have won had there not been voting irregularities in Ohio.  Senator Obama has already proven that he will not let Kerry's mistakes of not hitting back at attacks be a problem for him.

Obama 08

Why the "?" for Lieberman? Not sure if he's an Indie or not?
Does Grover Norquist think that Bobby Jindal is Bill Frist with a tan?

Norquist your a June Bug with an over active thyroid gland...
put that in your blow hole and smoke it...
and I'm not running for anything either..
....by the way Grover Norquist is a racist pig. No contest.

Per the Huffingtonpost.com:

...All About McCain's Top Vice Presidential Prospect Governor Bobby Jindal...
Authorized Chemical Castration Of Sex Offenders... Called Intelligent Design "The Very Best Science"...Helped Pass A "Stealth Creationism" Education Bill... Lists Experiences As A Faith Healer, Demon Fighter, Exorcist...

If this is the guy McCain likes best, his judgement need be called into question. God forbid this man be a heartbeat away!
Scorecard on articles for Friday:

Neg for McCain/Rep - 5
Pos for McCain - 1
Neutral - 4
Pos for Obama?Dems - 6
Neg for Obama/Dems - 0
No Hillary for VP. Joe Biden would be a great pick.  Bright and knows foreign relations. Would not get in Obama's way and could be a good President if need be.
I just realized why Bill Clinton's miffed. His wife just spent 10 million dollars and all he got was a tshirt. She's not even going to be VP. I know he had to see Mandela, but I'd be off drunk in Europe too. I don't care how rich you get, 10 million dollars is 10 freakin million dollars.
Gov Richardson brings Foreign Policy, UN and International Peace experience, Energy expertice and Hispanic voters.  He'd help deliver Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Texas & Arizona.
Did I just read that right?  "John Kerry with a tan"?!?  Are we just going to ignore that?!?   The Republicans must not have gotten the memo about this being a post-racial era and all.
lol!

"Joe Lieberman (I-?)"

Mike Memoli has no idea that Lieberman is a Senator in Connecticut?

These are our political journalists, MSNBC?
John McCain:  George Bush with a hearing aid.
Comments like that Grover, only help Senator Obama.  Please keep showing us what a racist idiot you are.
How the Heck is Mitt Romney not mentioned on the short list.  He has always been one of the top choices.  Now that its getting down to the wire, you just convienently forget to mention him?

STOP TRYING TO STEER THIS ELECTION!
THE SHORT LIST. New York Times gets to the bottom of John McCain’s standard answer on potential veeps. Insert-name-here is part of the “the next generation of leadership” for the party.

You would think John McCain would steer clear of messages that reinforce the multi-generational gap between himself and anyone he would choose as his VP (as well as the generational gap between himself and Obama).  When he says that "insert name here" is part of the "next generation of leadership for the party" doesn't that automatically make him part of the last (over-the-hill and out-of-touch) generation?
Aaarhg! Anything happ'n while I was gone?!?
So that would make Grover Norquist what? Jabba the Hutt in a white sheet?
Another terrific VP candidate for Obama is MA Rep Bill Delahunt. The pompus way he questioned current VP Chief of Staff David Addington, exposing Addington to al Qaeda idenification was perfect. Tit for tat Republicans on the Plame deal, and no Vanity Fair spread for Addington. It's about time the Democrats expose the Republicans to terror threats. Rep. Delahunt is a hero and a true patriot for exposure of Addinton to al Qaeda. Good job Rep Delahunt. Democrats need many more like you! If you're not VP timber, then certainly you deserve a high ranking position in the state department. You've made us proud and we salute you!

Barack Obama 08/12
hey Eric G., saw your comments on what should happen to the 5 supremes the other day after one of their rulings. msnbc had the dignity to quickly take it down. just need to point out what a skunk you are. you should get a visit from some nice governemnt people soon. you got some 'splanen to do pal.
Sorry to disappoint you Senator Clinton, but I won't as gracious as you.  Maybe you and Senator Obama are truly above all the trashtalking that went on.  But I won't forget all the insults hurled your way by "Obama 08" kids and I plan to sit this one out in November.  And if Obama thinks I'll be donating any money to him...
Eff Grover Norquist and the Republican trick pony he rode in on.
Grover Norquest is a patriot that hates Democracy, oxymorons are still just morons at heart.
Kerry with a tan, well show me the tan lines Grover, or are you just mad that a muppet named Grover gets more air time?
So when do they usually announce their running mate? Do we have to wait until the convention?
Wake Up --- THERE IS AN OIL & ENERGY CRISIS... AND WE ARE HEADING FOR A DEPRESSION IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE ABOUT IT SOON.
I suspect that Norquist will have a problem with Jindal.  He has a tan.  Norquist sounds like an arrogant, elitist republican.  Republicans are the elitists with the country club memberships.  They can afford the membership since they write everyting off as a business expense.
it will take awhile for different types of fuel, but why not look at Brazile and the way they found an alternative not to depend on oil and it's safe for out ozone.and then maybe there will be a future for our children. Also, why not speak with our enemies first at least we can say we gave it a try.Instead of starting a senseless war for example Iraq.our commander in chief who by the way has old oil money did not waste anytime in starting one with Iraq and did not wait on the U.N can you imagine if he would have waited a few more months,I believe the outcome would have been different.
'Tis a shame that this country still is full of racists.  That "tan" comment by Grover Norquist is pathetic and screams racism. Everyone should be outraged. John McCain is too old, cheated on his first wife Carol Shepp with his current wife, Cindy, and has reinvented the term "flip flop." Doesn't anyone care about what is right anymore?  GO OBAMA...we need the republicans out of power. They have had their chance for almost eight years. When Bush was first elected gasoline was $1.47 a gallon. We need leadership for the people, not the leadership for profit!! GO OBAMA!!!
Although I admire Bill Richardson & think he could help with the latino vote I have to say sometimes he can be a little soft. Webb or Biden would be great picks. They both have the gravitas to take on the GOP attack machine & foreign policy experience as an added bonus.
McCain would be better off
with John Kasich as his Running mate.
He must WIN Ohio,Pennsylvania,New Jersey,Michigan
if he expects to win the way the "Polls" are trending now.
Obama would be better off with Dick Gephardt
as his Running mate.He would help a great
deal bringing the Anti-Nafta Labor crowd along,
also he looks "Presidential" himself.
Missouri is a Vital and Important state
for Democrats.
