Veepstakes: Is Hillary back on the list?

Posted: Monday, June 30, 2008 9:14 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: ,

Has Hillary Clinton worked her way back on the Obama short list? The New York Daily News’ Goodwin thinks so.

The Los Angeles Times' McManus goes through the VP process for both campaigns and notes how few leaks have come out of late, particularly from the McCain side.

VIDEO: The New York Time's Mark Leibovich discusses his take on possible VP candidates and their role in the presidential race.

NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli’s wrap of the Sunday morning shows: Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) defended McCain on immigration on This Week, asking “when has Barack Obama stood up and taken on his party on anything of national significance?” “If you look at any argument that Senator McCain is an extension of George Bush, it does not hold water, in a whole bunch of categories,” Pawlenty said. “He’s the one who said we’ve got to change the conduct of the war. He’s the one that says we have to take a different approach on energy.”

Gov. Ed Rendell (D-PA) reiterated he wants to finish his terms as Pennsylvania governor. “Well, the national media didn’t listen,” he said on Fox News Sunday. “I said in 2011, it’s my intention to walk out the door of the capital, the Lord willing, in January of 2011. I know that disappoints some people in the capital, but that’s my intention.” “And if there was a position open that I was interested in, like energy or transportation, I’d be honored to serve in an Obama administration, but not at the beginning, not until my time is finished,” he said.

Former Rep. Rob Portman (R-OH), when asked about the vice presidency, said he likes being home in Ohio. “I don’t know, and I don’t expect to be asked, honestly,” he said on Fox News Sunday. “I’m also, as you know, Chris, home after 15 years of commuting when I was in Congress and in the administration, and I’ve got three teenagers. It’s time to be home. I love being home.” “And public service is an incredible privilege and honor,” he said. “And I hope some day to be able to get back and do something that’s substantive to help people.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) said John McCain is “more ready to be president on foreign and domestic policy because of his extraordinary experience.” He said McCain, like Clinton, was ready to be president on day one. “Because our enemies will test the new president early,” Lieberman said on Face the Nation. “Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration. John McCain is ready to take the reins on January 20th, 2009. He doesn't need any training.”

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) said social conservatives want McCain “to talk about is his role as president in selecting judges, nominating judges, especially the Supreme Court.” Jindal also said there is still time to block the legislative pay raise that has gotten him into hot water in Louisiana. “We still have a week,” he said on Late Edition. “And we still have many options to make sure that we don't see legislators take a pay raise that would be more than double what they currently make. I think that's excessive.”

Gov. Pawlenty, the McCain you are describing no longer exsits. McCain has back tracked on his stance on immigration. It is one thing to go aganist your party on the immigration bill sveral years ago and then change your mind once you become the nominee. If he believes in standing up to his party, then why not do so now. Why the flip flops? also, where is the article on McCain defaulting in paying the taxes of his beach front home.
I don't see how Hillary CAN'T be on the list.  She may not be chosen for the VP spot on the ticket - but I would guess that she's at least on the list for consideration.

Pawlenty is moving his mouth, but has no facts injected into all that bombast.
There is nothing nice I can say about Joe Lieberratt, so i wont. I thought it funny the warm reception McBush got at NALEO.
John McCain,

'Day One', is a losing argument, MY FRIEND. Catch up.
Senator Clinton is not back on the list until all the questions about Former President Clinton are answered (business ties, library donors, etc.).

...and don't forget that the GOP drools at the prospect of running against a campaign in which she would be directly involved as a running mate.
Has Pawlenty been sleeping the last few years?

Barack Obama disagreed with the Iraq war from day 1.

Considering every Republican and most Democrats agreed with this, it's clear Obama was willing to stand up and fight for what was right.  That single position is far more substantial than anything McCain has ever stood up for.

Maybe McCain should rethink his position on NEVER talking with our enemies.  Look at North Korea's dismantling of their nuclear facilities last week and it's obvious Bush realized that position was wrong.

We don't need a president who sings "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran".
I wouldn't think so!!! H. Clinton is very headstrong.  This can be good and very bad!

We need someone with reasoning in office.  Let's not bomb everyone who upsets us!!

I thought that Barack and Hillary looked good together and their joint rally was a smashing success.  I am more inclined to see her on the ticket with Obama, but I'll let the experts at the Obama campaign decide who will be best to serve as barack's VP.

Only Barack Obama can bring back honesty and integrity to the White House!

Go Obama 08/12!
For all the blather about mccain's "experience", he sure doesn't have much to show for it, certainly no more than Obama. Despite all of his double talk, he still bends over and votes in lock step with whatever bush wants. Mccain is nothing more than bush all over again.
mccant ADMITS bush WAS WRONG but still backs him 95% of the time, mccant says it was wrong to invade iraq but since we did we must stay forever, that is like the police with a warrant for your next door neighbor mistakenly arresting YOU then saying well since we arrested YOU we must put him in jail and charge YOU with something cause if you break it you own it.
McCain walked away from his own legislation on immigration what is Pawlenty talking about.
Hillary is the only logical choice for VP, she has earned a it and deserves it. Obama would make his first wise decision in picking her.
i say tom kaine for VP and hillary should really be off the list, i believe she could be more effective in an obama cabinet heading up her own operation

GOOGLE SHUTTING DOWN ANTI-OBAMA BLOGS
http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/29/score-1-for-google/
I would not think she has the credability to be on the bill. Her campaign was a bit disingenuous to say the least. To say the most, she lied, mis-represented her resume and she voted poorly on more than several occasions. Speaker of the House is where she belongs. She can't be worse than Pelosi, or can she?
Obama NEEDS Hillary on that ticket, He stands to lose millions of votes otherwise. If she were VP I could see him winning in the fall. That will be the ONLY way I would vote for him. He all know if elected he won't  be there long.
I think that all of America expected the first black in the  two highest offices (or on the top ticket) to be a vice president, then later on down the line there would be a black president.  I think all of America expected the first woman in the two highest offices to be a vice president (and there has already been a woman VP on a national ticket), then later on down the line there would be a woman president.  ----------  But maybe this does a disservice to both blacks and women.  Since they are both, inescapably, symbols, is it really a good idea for either one to accept "2nd place"?  I would rather see Hillary as the *head* of something (a cabinet department, the Senate, a task force) or one among equals (the Supreme Court) than as a "helpmeet"   However traditional it may be for a VP to attend funerals, etc., wouldn't it feel wrong to have a woman (or a black) start off on the national stage in that "subservient" role?  Let's aim higher.
Started off as a Governor Richardson supporter, but moved to Senator Obama instead of Senator Clinton. Primarily because I thought all along that she'd win. Still an Obama supporter, and would have had no problem with Clinton.

Now, putting Clinton on the ticket almost assuredly gives Obama the win in November. She helps him close down Ohio and maybe even brings in Arkansas. Along with what he already has in the "blue" column, bringing on New Mexico and Colorado makes it a smashing success. Then, if Florida somehow slides over (and could Texas swing), it would be a landslide.

But, he'd have to fully vet former President Clinton. If Bill isn't willing to give up all the info, then in good conscience he probably won't be able to bring her on to the ticket.  Instead, he would look to Biden, Bayh, Webb.
Biden brings no states, but he brings a wealth of statesmanship and foreign policy credentials. I like him a lot.

Bayh brings similar background in foreign policy, but also has been a govenor (grat for administering things, and was a Clinton backer to boot). Only problem is that his senate seat would go to a Republican.

Webb, former Navy Sec'y under Reagan so he brings the right side over. Helped push through recent GI Bill.  Has said some things in past regarging women which could hurt Obama in the fall and make things a little tight. But, McCain has no record as it relates to women.

Hagel, a wild card for sure and would really trump anything McCain could bring.  Lieberman for McCain? Please.  Hagle is former military, conservative in many respects and is now against the war. He would play very well to the center.

So, there are five possible choices. But at the end of the day, I trust that whomever Obama and his team selects, that person will be the right person.
Good luck.
Both Clintons are still trying to hang onto, and use, whatever power they have left.  They are still trying to call all the shots, and make it all about them - not the party, or country.  Hillary wants to be the star of the convention.  Obama sure doesn't need her as VP - constantly trying to upstage, and undermine him.
NO!!  Hillary should not be in a position to defend an Empty Suit that "won" the nomination by dividing the party via race-baiting and falsely accusing the Clintons of racism!

Unfortunately, MCcain is just like most of the people who will vote for him.....afraid of true change.  Status quo, everything stays good for the rich and takes the government back 20 years at least!
Wake up people and re-read McFarland, WI because it's the truth!!  Anyone who would say, much less sing, that ditty needs to be locked away and medicated badly, not running our country!!!  OBAMA '08
Obama called Democrats "racists" for not supporting him! Racists that cling to their guns and religion.
And then he had the audacity to claim Evangelicals weren't reading their Bibles because they didn't agree with his positions.

Obama and Wright are wrong for America!

If you hate Whites - vote Obama.
If you respect all races - vote McCain.

Dems for McCain!

The best choices for VP for Obama are easy:
General Clark
Senator Webb
Joe Biden
Please let it be any one of these!!
GO OBAMA'08
Interesting to see how Joe Lieberman is falling upon the same old tactics of fear mongering to try to promote his candidate.  You can always tell a war monger.  Lieberman, McCain, Cheney, and Bush are all birds of a feather when it comes to their insane foreign policy.
If we're planning on invading an innocent country, becoming bogged down for a hundred years in a pointless and illegal war, locking up innocent people without reason and torturing them, spying on every single person in the United States, eviscerating the Constitution of the United States and trying to operate under simultaneously diametrically opposed economic, social and military policies, then McCain's the perfect next President of the US.

For a return to an America that once was the envy of the world because of its humanity and insistence on personal freedoms, you'll need to vote in Obama.

McCain is a D-List disposable GOP presidential candidate who was promised this nomination 8 years ago.

Nobody, even in the GOP, is taking his candidacy seriously.
One minor point in the New York Times article graphically illustrates why an Obama/Clinton ticket would ultimately be a nightmare for Obama, i.e., Bill is still angry. Can anyone paint a worse scenario for Obama trying to affect real change (if he still is) and establishing himself as a world leader while Bill runs around getting headlines and displaying his extreme ego and self love? While being the first spouse would have been difficult for Bill, it is inconceivable that he could behave properly and supportively as the spouse of the VP. Beware Obama.
Nothing about McCain or his voting record is as egregious as Obama's indoctrination into black separatism and Black Liberation Theology that fuses politics and religion.
AND - throughout the primary, Obama emulated Wright's racist rants and hatemongering!  by "brushing Hillary off" the bottom of his shoe and laughing along with the crowd - just like Trinity members.
AND - Obama's numerous instances of race-baiting and falsely accusing the Clintons of racism.

Dems have railed against Bush fusing politics and religion - and now they've got their own Empty Suit that does the same.

This Dem family would never vote for a candidate that "won" the nomination by dividing the Party and playing the Race Card!

NObama!

How stupid are the voters who would rather vote for McCain than Obama?  I am a Hillary supporter, however I will  vote, support and campaign for Obama...no matter what.  We, as democrats, shouldn't want a republican in office, are you serious!?!? Get a life...actually, with another republican in office you'll need to get another life because the one you know will no longer be.  Vote for Obama, not for the third-term of bush, idiots!
Its a fact jack...that Hillary & Bill said Obama wasn't the choice for America.  He wasn't experienced and didn't share the same views!  Wow, what a difference a few weeks make!  Now they are sincerely up his butt!  And people say McCain backs President Bush...I'd say that's the pot calling the kettle!
If Obama does put Hillary on his ticket as VP, he
will LOSE just as many votes from the anti-Hillary
folks (me, included) as he will PICK UP from her
disgruntled die-hard supporters.

So it really doesn't matter, they cancel each other
out.  And he'll win MANY, MANY new voters WITHOUT
her on his ticket.

Hillary and Bill have just never understood the depth
of the "Clinton Fatigue" in this country!
Obamabots need to get 2nd and 3rd jobs and donate to the DNC. They've already had to cancel about 50 parties for Denver because the DNC threw Whites and Hispanics under the bus and they're no longer donating.

he he
Who said HC was ever taken off the list?  Obama is nothing if not politically savvy, and I'm sure he knows that an Obama-Hillary ticket would almost guarantee a win, unless the Repulsives manage to steal it again.
Will the message of change and the Obama brand survive the Clintons??????  This is the real question. They served well when in office and Senator Cinton continues to serve well as New York's senator, that being said Ido not understand how the  the constant apeasing of the Clintons either helps or is attractive.  The message I get is that an Obama administration without the Clintons as major players can not function or even be possible.  This kind of idea pushed by influencial people underminds the abilities, commitment and passion of all other Americans involved or could be involved in our Democratic society.
This concept is more offencive to the small donors and voters, who hopes for a better way, than precieved sexism and precived raceism. This is about the preception of inadequacy, even though those considered inadequate are educated in standard universities, worked hard, followed the rules and share America's core values.  THESE ARE THE REAL BUILDING BLOCKS OF SEXISM AND RACEISM.

No Clinton on the ticket for VP please.

GA will turn Blue.
I agree HillDem4McCain, if Hillary is on the Obama ticket I will seriously consider voting for them.  If not, I have no other choice but to vote for McCain.  Obama with out Hillary spells disaster...McCain will absolutely do better than Obama minus Hillary.
Dan - "Barack Obama disagreed with the Iraq war from day 1. "

Then why did he vote the same as Senator Clinton after attaining his Senate seat? Barack gave such an important speech it wasn't even covered by the local news at the time. Obama is going down with Rezko, Auchi and the rest. He is a criminal. Clinton will stay away and save us all in August.
KJ in Gulfport

Clark supported Clinton prior to Obama.
Jim Webb has a Confederate problem that not many know about.
And Joe "You can't go into a 7-11 unless your Pakistani" (bad hairplugs) Biden??

Come on.

Clinton in August. Save us all.

Nah your list has to have LIEberman, he's the ticket for OBAMA!
Gawd, let's hope not.

If good governance is the aim, and the Clinton track record is the indicator, then Obama would better off losing without her, then winning with her.

And as for us, the American Public, well if we haven't learned our lesson of looking beyond the spin, we deserve what we get...another irresponsible white house.
If you hate Whites - vote Obama.
If you respect all races - vote McCain.
