Obama talks patriotism in Missouri

Posted: Monday, June 30, 2008 3:17 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

INDEPENDENCE, MO -- No party or political philosophy has a monopoly on patriotism, Obama told the audience here Monday, spelling out his own definition of a concept increasingly at issue in this historic election.

Flanked by four American flags and wearing a flag pin on his lapel, the presumptive Democratic nominee used a variation of the word “patriot” some 35 times during his roughly 45-minute speech. He said the upcoming July 4th holiday was a good time to reflect on the meaning of the word, and argued it had been used “as a political sword or a political shield” since the birth of the Republic and in this election.

VIDEO: Barack Obama delivers a speech on patriotism in Independence, MO. Listen to the entire speech.

“It is worth considering the meaning of patriotism because the question of who is -- or is not -- a patriot all too often poisons our political debates, in ways that divide us rather than bringing us together,” he told an audience of about 1,150 people in the Truman Auditorium here. “I have come to know this from my own experience on the campaign trail.”

Obama said he had taken his own patriotism as a given all his life, but had seen it questioned this election season. “At certain times over the last 16 months, I’ve found, for the first time, my patriotism challenged -- at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears and doubts about who I am and what I stand for,” he said. “So let me say at this at the outset of my remarks. I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine.”

Like his speech on race in Philadelphia during the primary campaign, political observers were likely to watch this address closely, along with those voters who are still uneasy about Obama because of his name, his background, and his upbringing.

The need for the speech highlights the traction that Internet rumors about the senator's faith and supposed lack of patriotism has had. Before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Obama was asked in several town halls about his resistance to say the Pledge of Allegiance. He repeatedly explained the rumor was false and talked about leading the pledge while in the Senate.

If Obama -- a non-typical candidate when it comes to his race and his upbringing in places like Hawaii and Indonesia -- is to expand the electoral map this election year, as his campaign has repeatedly said he aims to do, he has to gain ground with voters who worry that he is not like them and cannot relate to their concerns.

Today in this symbolically named town in a state he hopes to move to the blue column in the fall, Obama linked the notion of patriotism to his own life. "For a young man like me, of mixed race, without firm anchor in any particular community, without even a father’s steadying hand, it is this essential American idea -- that we are not constrained by the accident of birth but can make of our lives what we will -- that has defined my life, just as it has defined the life of so many other Americans,” he said to applause.

He talked about childhood memories and the lessons his family taught him about what it means to be an American and spoke of pasts presidents like Thomas Jefferson and John Adams (who had had their patriotism questioned) and others like Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt (who had used the notion of patriotism to justify unpatriotic or unconstitutional actions).

He called Martin Luther King Jr. and the Abu Ghraib whistleblower patriots for pointing out injustice, and he quoted Missourian Mark Twain to applause, saying: “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

Obama also linked the today’s debate about patriotism to the “culture wars of the 1960s,” as he distanced himself from an attack made last fall by the liberal group MoveOn.org on Gen. David Petraeus.

"All too often our politics still seems trapped in these old, threadbare arguments -- a fact most evident during our recent debates about the war in Iraq, when those who opposed administration policy were tagged by some as unpatriotic, and a general providing his best counsel on how to move forward in Iraq was accused of betrayal,” he said. “Given the enormous challenges that lie before us, we can no longer afford these divisions. “

MoveOn took out an ad last fall calling the then commanding general of the multinational force in Iraq "General Betray Us" as he testified on Capitol Hill about the situation in Iraq. Obama, though, refused to vote on a Senate measure condemning the MoveOn ad, calling it a stunt.

The senator was introduced by a young former army captain and Iraq war vet, and he cited the casualty rate in Iraq at the beginning of his speech, arguing it was important to reflect on what patriotism means when the country is in the midst of war.

He talked about the importance of honoring those who have served in the US military and made a point of rejecting -- albeit indirectly -- Gen. Wes Clark’s remarks this weekend in which the general, a Democratic candidate in the last election and until recently a Clinton supporter, seemed to belittle McCain’s military service.

Obama said that veterans who had “endured physical torment in service to our country” did not need to prove they had sacrificed for American and that “no one should ever devalue that service, especially for the sake of a political campaign, and that goes for supporters on both sides. We must always express our profound gratitude for the service of our men and women in uniform. Period. Full stop.”

100+ reasons NOT to vote for McCain (with sources cited )

It’s a delicate dance, and John McCain is ‘liable to break a hip’
http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/15924.html
He shouldn't be distracted from the issues the country is concerned with in this election. It seems every time someone speaks out against the SACRED MCCAIN, he has to have a speech to explain himself. Mccain doesn't wear his frickin flag pin either..The MSM biasness of this election has me irritated. Even MSNBC is starting to disappoint me, particularly that BS that went on Morning Joe today.
Why all of a sudden because John McCain was a POW does military service matter?

After what the Republicans did to John Kerry, I just assumed that anyone's military record is fair game.

Afterall, didn't we all learn during the swift boat incident that military service doesn't matter, no matter how many medals one gets? It's all a crock isn't it? That's what the Republicans taught me.

And they support the troops.

Yeah right.

Barack Obama's path to the White House:  the High Road
Great speech. As usual—the deep faith and love for the American people comes through.

Obama 08
The repukes would still try to attack his patriotism even if he were dressed like Uncle Sam singing the star spangled banner on the 4th of july while heating a hot dog and drinking a beer while watchign NASCAR!
I CANT BELIEVE  CLARKS REMARKS, WHAT DID HE RUN ON, AND OBAMA HAS 145 DAYS AS A SENATOR, WHAT IS HE RUNNING ON, WRIGHT' CHURCH ELECTED HIM.  I CANT BELIEVE THE POSTS IN HERE ABOUT MC CAIN, ALL I CAN FIGURE IS THAT THE PEOPLE POSTING ARE RACISTS, WHICH WE KNOW OBAMA WILL GET ALL BLACK VOTE.

OBAMA FAVORITE GROUP IS LUDRICUS WHO PUTS WOMEN DOWN AND PROMOTES VIOLENCE=GUESS THAT QUALIFIES HIM AS A DEMOCRAT.
This man has more class in his little finger than McFossil has in his entire body. Obama has consistently taken the high road where McFossil's "service" has ever been mentioned. When talking about him, he always prefaces with "I honor John McCain's service to our country". I've heard it a hundred times. Too bad the same isn't true of McFossil; he has no class. Being shot down does NOT give you foreign affairs experience; it just means you were a BAD pilot.
For a young man like me, of mixed race, without firm anchor in any particular community, without even a father’s steadying hand, it is this essential American idea -- that we are not constrained by the accident of birth but can make of our lives what we will -- that has defined my life

Overall another good speech by the guy who gives good speeches......It's worth pointing out that obama's lack of credibility on patriotism has nothing to do with his race or being raised in a single-parent household. His credibility on patriotism suffered when he choose (Mr. Anti-America) Rev.Wright as his "spiritual mentor" for 20yrs. obama's knack for playing "poor me" politics whenever he gets himself in a bind is sickening. I can't believe my party choose this loser as our (presumptive) nominee. UCK!
This should answer those dullards who think Hillary will be Obama's VP.  The one who's been questioning his patriotism most "the past 18 months" has been...HILLARY!!  Think he'll ask her to join the slate?
The word unpatroitic has been used since Bush has been in office to describe anyone who is against the war or any of his policies.  The Republicians need to keep their mouths shut about it and just try to get this country back on the right track.  Vote Obama.
You are not eating HIS lunch, McCain ...
All the brew ha ha about McCain's heroics got me thinking about the difference between being a hero and being a patriot. They are not one and the same. To point out facts about either of the candidates does not make the pointer a slime ball. Almost daily, facts about John Mc.are seeing the light of day. He is now being vetted and new revelations are often detrimental to him. The fact that he graduated fifth from the bottom of his graduating class should send up a warning flag about his intelligence. We have had an ignoramous in the White House for almost eight years. We all know how that turned out.
GOOD for you Barack Obama - we are proud of you.

Just like your mother and grand parents were. We will see the BS the GOP's pukes are doing and they are the only group that has not been patriotic; at least for the last 8 years of the GOP's and their cronnies.

They think they coined the phase patriotic - or they can redefind it and the U.S. will listen. NO GOP YOU MADE A MOCKERY OUT OF IT.

Forget about it GOPs and John McCain, we will view your military records and the hold world will see how patroitic you really are and you won't be able to stop it.

There is a website that has the "real" information about John McCain military record and why the GOP are so afraid we will found out about it.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Obama's speech today hit all the right notes on what it means to love your country and to be a true patriot, not some flag pin wearing phony. Ranks right up there with Obama's Philadelphia speech on race.
Well done, Obama.  He certainly steps above the fray.  I am not so gracious.  I think McCain allowing a swift boater on the call today is indicative of what I've come to expect from the Rovian Right.  Do as I say, not as I do.

I will still honor the opinion of a 4-star general over the cries of "foul play" that are staged, and disingenuous.

This continues to prove what I've been saying all along, McCain simply does not have a campaign strategy.  He can't keep a principled position on anything because he is so busy pandering right and left.

Politics is a game, and you don't get to change the game unless you win.  I believe Obama fully intends to win and change the game.  And I think he has the leadership qualities to make it happen.  I don't think McCain could lead his campaign out of a paper sack with two hands and a flashlight.
Obama has called it.
Often the term 'patriotic' is defined as 'whatever the speaker supports' and 'unpatriotic' as 'whatever he doesn't support.'
Its use is similar to using a 'boogeyman' word, like 'communist' or 'terrorist.'
It is interesting that Obama needs to make this argument at all.  But since he decided it was necessary, it is good for him to have given it such a thoughtful treatment.

In terms of Gen. Clark's statements, I agree that McCain's POW years should not be "devalued".  But, I thought the issue in question was whether that time qualified as executive experience for McCain, experience that made him exclusively qualified to be a wartime Commander-in-Chief.

http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
I believe it is a sad day in politics when a presidential candidate has to describe his patriotism because of his name and culture. In addition, I find it disgraceful that the McCain camp will critize clark for making a legitimate comment that serving in the military does not qualify you to be president. This is the same party that swiftboated and questioned Kerry's military record. Patritism is not about serving your country in the military, but committing your life to serve the people in this country as a teacher, poilice officer, doctor, lawyer etc. It also included letting the administration know when they are wrong. Being a true patriot is to stand up to injustice and wrongdoing. Bravo Obama for your speech. Bravo
Honestly, he should just keep giving major speeches addressing his percieved weaknesses every 6 weeks. 1 minute later McCain is show looking so unpresidential by comparison, it's worth 5 attack ads.

On a superficial note,I do wish some one would tell him to kill that tie. It clashes with the flag & is an awful color on tv.
Another excellent statement by Barack Obama.

It is sad that in this age of information lying a few keystrokes away, Obama still has to defend his Patriotism against internet rumors.  People need to learn to do their own research and not just believe what propaganda is handed to them.
What has this country come to when a candidate for President of the United States needs to prove that he is patriotic enough to hold the post. Unbelievable!

As long as we allow the fear mongering and smear campains to continue we will never grow as a nation. Issues, not race, creed or ethnicity should be the measure of qualifications.  The media feeds this stupidity with questions about lapel pins and religion. A surrogates remarks about QUALIFICATIONS generates outrage.  Commander in Chief credentials is a legitimate matter for discussion.

Speaking of fear mongering....where is the media's coverage of Liebermans fear mongering remarks on Face the Nation.  He said we need McCain as predident because there will be a terrorist attack in the first months on the new presidency.  I'm guessing since it was flattering to McCain it was not newsworthy.  Comments follow:

LIEBERMAN: We need a president who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief on day one. Senator McCain is - incidentally, Senator Clinton said that over and over again and she was right. She was ready to be president on day one. Why? Because our enemies will test the new president early. Remember that the truck bombing at the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration. John McCain is ready to take the reins on January 20, 2009. He doesn't need any training.

Fair and Balanced please.
“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

GWB & his band of idiot's Deserve No Patriotism from me or My family, Period.Using our Military for thier war on Oil will come back to haunt the GOP for decades.

Now we learn(not from 1st read tho)that GWB is trying his best to plan an October surprise by finding Osama.I for one find this Comical, because they've had 8 year's. now all of a sudden, he's back to being Public enemy #1. The GOP's grand plan of staying in Power has fallen into the CrapHole.

Barack has already said where American Troop's are headed & Pakistan better be ready on Day 1(to quote Hillary) to flush Osama out. We're coming Pakistan, get ready to Rock & Roll. Our Troop's know where the Real Fight Is & they're beyond Ready to Engage the Real Enemy of 911.

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over !!
I express my full gratitude for the service of men and women in uniform like my father who was wounded in WWII and a brother who flew in the Air Force during the 1st Gulf war but neither of them get automatically qualified to be president as a result of said service.
When Obama speaks
Everyone listens......

When McShame speaks..
:crickets:
I see an upper-cut coming from Obama at the next mention of his patriotism from the McWillieWonka campaign.
This is a sensible and reasonable young man.. I wonder how long the McCain camp will belabor their point about his service.. Obama CLEARLY rejects the comments by Wes Clark.. So I am sure people will criticize him for that but I think it is shows a lot of merit to NOT run with something us outsiders think would be tremendously interesting...I guess this is why those that don't support Obama refer to him as the Messiah because of times like these.. just because someone takes the high road here and there it is so over analyzed.
Senator Barack Obama is all that, and a bag of chips.

Just by being decent, he shames the neocon repubs. (That term is meant for the Rove, and Limbaugh types, not all Republicans).

In my opinion, the neocon witch-hunters are patently unAmerican. They helped stick us into this sink whole of failure our beloved country finds itsself in from the last 7.5 years.

Their treasonous actions may not be punishable in this life. However, there will be justice in the next.
It is sad that this man has to stand up and say that he is American !

Think about it !  It is 2008 !
i agree with general wesley clarks' statement as regards john mccain's military service/being a pow not as a qualification for being president....i've felt this way for many, many months....i respect his service to our country, but i don't think he's qualified to be our president....general clark affirmed his feelings for mccain's service...end of that story.....i'm tired of the free ride the press is giving to john mccain....let's be in depth and bi-partisan on reporting....charmaine, st. clair shores, michigan
Yes, he did and a fine speech it was!  I agree with everything he had to say, and so did those in attendance.  Their applause was tremendous.  Senator Obama just gets better and better!
Yes, he did and a fine speech it was!  I agree with everything he had to say, and so did those in attendance.  Their applause was tremendous.  Senator Obama just gets better and better!
I would be interested to know if Mr. Obama took any questions from the reporters. Obama is able to deliver with passion and conviction the words written by his speech writer but all too often he stumbles when with out his speeches. I know I am not the first to notice this but I point it out because of previous reports that Obama and his team are keeping the press at bay and staging events very carefully. This seems to me to one perfect example however the spin here at MSNBC seems to paint this as a positive for Obama when in fact Todd himself has talked about Obama not giving enough time to the press and that choreographed, scripted events.
Another glorious speech. Mock him if you like. Only a fool does not recognize that G-D is with Senator Obama.
All is fair in love and war!

And this "ain't" no love-fest baby!

McCain is pushing the matter. Obama had better SHOVE back and do it hard so the calcium deficient republican gets the idea EARLY!

This is pablum compared to what is in the tube...trust me on this one. The repubs are SCARED to death of OBAMA. They will lie, cheat, steal and pillage to defeat him. He had better come with his A-Game ready.
I heard General Clark's remarks, I did not think they demeaned John McCain's service in any way.  Merely stating that his Military service alone  does not neccessarily qualify him to lead this country.
I agree there needs to be a whole set of criteria used to size up a candidate, not just military service.
One of the qualities I look for is how a candidate handles criticism.  Does he rise above it and use it as an opportunity to educate the country.  Or does he sulk and have his campaign turn it into a huge political squabble.  Because one shows that one is an adult and a true leader.  The other looks more like a spoiled child who doesn't really have the temperament to be the leader of the free world.
WE WILL NOT LET THE RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVES DEFINE WHO'S PATRIOTIC EVER..............................

LOVING ONE'S COUNTRY AND HELPING THOSE IN NEED EACH AND EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE AND TAKING EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO USE YOUR GOD GIVEN TALENTS TO HELP A FELLOW AMERICAN OR ANYONE ELSE IS HEROIC AND PATRIOTIC

THE RIGHT WING DOES NOT GET TO DEFINE FLAG PINS, WHICH NONE OF THEM WEAR ON TV YET THE MEDIA WON'T ADDRESS IT, EVEN THOUGHT A PIN DOES NOT DEFINE WHAT'S IN YOUR HEART

IT DOESN'T MEAN RIPPING APART ANYONE CHARACTER THAT'S A THREAT TO YOU AND YOUR GOALS

IT DOESN'T MEAN LYING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AS WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS

IT DOESN'T MEAN USING THE POOR AND THE MIDDLE CALSS TO ENSURE THAT THE RICH ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO HAVE A GOOD LIFE WHILE THE REST OF HARD WORKING AMERICANS LOOSE JOBS...HOMES....CAN'T BUTY GAS... HEALTH CARE....FOOD

IT DOESN'T MEAN AS THE REPUBLICANS HAVE CONSISTENTLY SINCE BEING IN OFFICE AT EVERY TURN ALWAYS MAKING BIG BUSINESS RICHER WHILE THE MIDDLE CLASS AND OTHERS SUFFER............THUR TODAYS.......RECESSION

IT DOES MEAN TREATING OTHERS AS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED AND BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR, HELPING THOSE IN NEED AND JUST APPLYING GOD'S WORD.

IT MEANS C.H.A.N.G.E
The McCains did not paying his taxes in the State of California on of their 7 houses.

First Read, Chuck, Murray, MSNBC, when will you report this?
Its all mccain and the idiotic right have left...to prattle on about the patriotism none of them has...they don't pay for wars and they don't serve in them...just start and profit from them
One of the facinating approaches in this election is Obama's approach to attack.  Essentially it is..I will not attack your (wife) (patriotism) (age) (experience).  Don't you attack my (wife) Patriotism) (age) experience).  The GOP is notorious for swift boating, personal attacks. But this is not Obama's style.  He would rather stay positive and he is smart enough to know that personal attacks will backfire. They will surely backfire this year. That leaves only the issues of war, energy, housing, economy.  Barack is on the right side of the issues on these topics.
I don't know, why this is even a issue
Why is this race even close?
All this flap about a flag pin is ridiculous. Just because a person wears a wedding ring doesn't mean that he or she is a good spouse. we should put stock into people's actions as opposed to putting so much emphasis on symbols.
Obama - So where are the 'new politics'?  LOL.  Obama in Independance, MO.  Obama surogate Wes Clark lecturing us on patriotism.  He has to give a speeach today to define patriotism.  Note to BO:  Just wear a flag pin and that will do the job.

America will not fall for this guy.

McCain in a landslide.
Great speech... although I must say I don't agree with all this nonsense regarding General Clark's comments. He did not question McCain's patriotism, he simply stated that his particular experience as a POW or getting shot down in a fighter plane doesn't necessarily qualify him to be the commander in chief. Also, the man's a GENERAL and I think he's qualified to make those types of comments. There is nothing wrong with that statement.
Barack Obama is being and will continue to be attacked relentlessly by the right.  Despite this, polls show him up by 5 or 10 points.  The people giving him the edge in these polls already know he has a funny name, and probably know he is a person of color.  He has the money to define himself for what he is: A decent, patriotic American who represents fundamental change, and a Christian to boot.  McCain is stuck with the "stay the course" label and association with Bush and $5 gas.  Unless something completely new comes up, the smears by the right cannot overcome the basic fundamentals of this election year.  Obama will win.
QUESTION FOR YOU EGG HEASD:

Are the soldiers that went to Iraq to put their lives on the line for American freedom patriots?

If yes, are the few among them that killed and raped iraq women patriots?

Yet again, Obama plugs into the essence of who were are as a people and a country.  He reminds us of what it means to be an American, where we came from, what we have overcome, how we can pull together when we have to and what true leadership is capable.

His message of tolerance, patience, responsible debate, repsect for the other guy no matter how much you may disagree should energize all of us to get involved in solving the huge problems on our national agenda.  That is true American patriotism.

As a country, we have been digging a hole for the past 7 1/2 years. Look around at the barriers, the airport security lines, the guards around public buildings, the absence of traffic near the White House and Congress. They are powerful evidence that we are rattled, cowering at the prospect of another attack.  To me that is the least patriotic thing we could have done in repsonse to terrorist and their assualt on all we hold dear.  The strength of America lies in our ideas not in jersey barriers and metal detectors.  Those barriers are only a measure of the hole we have been digging for the past 7 1/2 years.  The first step in getting out that hole is to stop digging.

That is the essence of Obama's message on patriotism.
That is true patriotism, when individuals can agree to disagree.

Obama you are a patriot and we love you!  I also respect John mcKain service to this country.  But not because one did not serve means they are unpatrotic.

OBAMA 08!
