Obama calls Clark's remarks 'inartful'

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -- “Inartful” was the word Obama used Tuesday to characterize remarks Gen. Wes Clark made over the weekend and subsequently about McCain’s military service.

VIDEO:  NBC's Andrea Mitchell talks with John McCain supporter Carly Fiorina about the Wesley Clark controversy.

He also spoke about the telephone conversation he held with former President Bill Clinton yesterday while on a trip to Missouri.

At a press conference, the Illinois senator was asked what he thought about Clark's comments, which seemed to downplay the significance of McCain’s military service -- he was shot down and held as a POW for five and-a-half years during the Vietnam War -- and whether he felt they were similar to the Swift Boat ads used to attack John Kerry in 2004.

“I don’t think that Gen. Clark, you know, had the same intent as the Swiftboat ads that we saw four years ago; I reject that analogy,” he said, before adding that he had said many times that McCain’s deserved honor and respect for his service to the country. “Now I have differences with him on policy, and I will vigorously debate a lot of the decisions he’s made when it comes to national security that have weakened our capacity to meet the threats and challenges of the 21st century. But that certainly doesn’t detract from his past service to America.”

He did not answer the first part of the question directly and later Obama, who said he had not spoken with Clark, seemed to bristle when asked why he had not talked with him and whether he felt the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO owed McCain an apology, suggesting voters had more pressing matters on their minds.

"I guess my question is why, given all the vast numbers of things that we've got to work on, that that would be a top priority of mine?” he said. “I think that, you know, right now we're here to talk about how we can make sure that kids in Zanesville and across Ohio get the kind of support that they need and communities that are impoverished can start to rebuild. I'm happy to have all sorts of conversations about how we deal with Iraq and what happens with Iran, but the fact that somebody on a cable show or on a news show like Gen. Clark said something that was inartful about Sen. McCain I don’t think is probably the thing that is keeping Ohioans up at night."

*** UPDATE *** To that, the McCain campaign responded this way: “Apparently Barack Obama now thinks that smear attacks on John McCain’s military service are fair game. One day after earning praise for rejecting Gen. Clark’s attacks, Sen. Obama clarified that his remarks had been written months before and were not even aimed at Gen. Clark. After repudiating his own repudiation, he went on to ask why an apology to Sen. McCain from Gen. Clark would even be a priority. All Barack Obama has to do is tell his campaign surrogates to stop criticizing John McCain’s record of service and this discussion would be over. Apparently his campaign has no intention of doing so. The McCain campaign will not sit idly by and let these ongoing attacks go unanswered.”

On Clinton
Obama again reiterated his strong desire to have Bill Clinton campaign for him and said the pair had not dwelled on some of the negative back and forth of the primary campaign during their talk.

“I absolutely want Bill Clinton campaigning for me,” he said. “We had a great conversation. He is one of the most gifted public officials of our generation and you know has been one of the most successful presidents that we’ve had in my lifetime so I want his active involvement, his active participation.”

More: “We did not belabor the primary season. I think what we both acknowledged is that when you’re in a tough primary battle, you say things that you know, afterwards you may end up thinking, ah, it might have been a little intemperate. But that’s the nature of political campaigns. We are absolutely united in wanting to make sure that Democrats succeed both in Congress and in the White House in November and that we can move an agenda forward that’s actually going to help the people in Ohio.”

Obama said he would have to campaign more in this part of Ohio to win the support of voters that have not been strong supporters of Democrats in past elections or of him during the primary election, and he responded to a vague question about how to dispel rumors about him by saying they were “bogus and false and everybody has repeatedly said they’re bogus and false. I think everybody knows the answers to these questions. They’re just not true."

He also talked about the economy, the home foreclosure crisis, gas prices, renegotiating NAFTA and other issues during the roughly 35-minute press conference.

Faith-based initiatives
The presumptive Democratic nominee spoke with reporters after touring the East Side Community Ministry here. He began by announcing that, as president, he would create a new Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives that would be a critical part of his administration but that would function differently than the faith-based office set up by President George W. Bush under whom he said such programs had not met their potential.

“Support for social services to the poor and the needy have been consistently under-funded, rather than promoting the cause of all faith-based organizations, former officials in the Office have described how it was used to promote partisan interests,” he said. “As a result, the smaller congregations and community groups that were supposed to be empowered ended up getting short-changed.”

Obama said faith-based organizations would not be allowed to use federal money to proselytize, could not discriminate on the basis of faith and could only use taxpayer dollars on secular programs and initiatives. He also said they should not be able to discriminate in hiring on the basis of sexual orientation.

“In terms of hiring, I believe that Title 7 and state and local laws apply to faith-based organizations that are taking federal funds to provide services,” Obama said. “Now right now we have not passed a nondiscrimination act at the federal level that applies to sexual orientation. But there are states that have such laws in place, Illinois being one of them and in those circumstances I would expect state laws to be observed as well.”

During the press conference he did not answer directly whether he would create a new cabinet level position to deal with faith-based initiatives, but that he wanted the person heading up the office to have a direct line to him and to coordinate with cabinet officers.

Outside McCain's Bus:

STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS

Inside McCains bus:

DOUBLE TALK EXPRESS - ANYTHING BUSH/MCCAIN/CHENEY TALK EXPRESS
The McCain camp is not a little pathetic here.  Nothing that Clark said was a smear.

Grow a spine, Gramps
McCain protest too much, i thought he belongs to Republican party
I love how the McCain Camp's retort made absolutely no sense. It barely registered as English. Oh well; welcome to Alice in Wonderland.
Wow, what a substantive comeback.  The spin cycle and wheels on the straight talk express all came screeching to a halt today when Obama 'snap' called the press coverage exactly what it is, manufactured nonsense.

crickets?

What do you have McCain?  Anything?  Anyone else?  Anyone?

I thought not.

Personally, I think the McCain camp owes some apologies for their Cowboy Reaction and feigned indignation.  Get a grip, Repubs - it's gonna' be so sweet to watch you continue this counter productive line of crap.
McLame is crying again.  I can hear him now "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to."  Or "your so lame I bet you thought this campaign was about you."  I think the McCain campaign is emotionally unstable, pointing fingers, crying, wimps thats what I think.  If he is such a maverick and so darn strong why do they constantly whine about everything.  He said something I don't like, she looked at me wrong, he wore the wrong color, he didn't wear a pin, he went to the wrong town.  Wimpy, wimpy, wimpy.
Regarding the update,...

"...The McCain campaign will not sit idly by and let these ongoing attacks go unanswered."

No, but since they have no campaign message, they will sit idly by and let your needs as Americans go unanswered.
Why is the media (first read included) blowing the Clark statement totally out of proportion. Both candidates must deal with statements and/or actions that are true. Clark's statement was true, only an idiot would say that graduating 8th from the bottom of a class, or proving to be a useless pilot who got shot down in enemy territory would be justification for being our president. American's need to know the truth about both candidates. If it isn't true, McCain, then elaborate on it. Clark was not being less than truthful, YOU, on the other hand are. If you cannot handle honest curriosity and/or criticism then admit it!
The media (First Read) needs to get more involved in McCain's mistakes, quit treating him with kid gloves.

PS--pay your damn taxes!!!
John McCain is embarrassing himself. It is sad to see a once proud warrior reduced to the type of "na-na-nee-boo-boo" campaigning we have witnessed this week. Not Presidential at all.

America needs a leader who can stay focused on what is really important, not get sidetracked so easily. I expected so much more from the McCain campaign.
McFossil and all of HIS surrogates are continually and exponentially, I might add, degrading any form of honorable service he ever participated in by painting the veteran senator and war veteran as a "whining, snivelling, ball-bag that has nothing of importance to offer during a presidential campaign other than adolescent arguments and whimpy rhetoric. I have lost all of the little respect I had for McFossil and his people are NOT HELPING him gain any ground with this line of media pandering.
Obama, who said he had not spoken with Clark, seemed to bristle when asked why he had not talked with him and whether he felt the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO owed McCain an apology, suggesting voters had more pressing matters on their minds.
*********************************************

Seemed to bristle Athena? Senator Obama is annoyed because the media is on another piranha like feeding frenzy, (over the much maligned General Clark), while he is trying to get his message out to the people with regard to their struggles. You dunderheads continue to do everything in your power to thwart his efforts.

It's a wonder he didn't read the bunch of you the riot act.
I am so sick of McLame whining and trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill every other day.  Shut up about it already.  Clarke had the courage to say what is on a lot of Democrats minds and Obama belives in free speech.  Newsweek says this is not a good topic to question although it is true, because Obama also does not have executive experience.  I beg to differ, people need to wake up and relize that McCain is not as experienced as the Conventional Wisdom (ie Media) gives him credit for. I would take Obama's legislative and real world experience over McCain's anyday.  Why?  Because he earned his spot in the world.  I'm not so sure the McCain did.  He got their by family name, unfortunate/fortunate circumstance, and marrying into money (to the detriment of his first wife).

If not for McCain's POW status, a guy who left his first wife in the manner that McCain did would never have won the nomination.  Just ask Mr. Guiliani
The McCain camp is not a little pathetic here.  Nothing that Clark said was a smear.

Grow a spine, Gramps
The McCain campaign needs to grow up. All their responses are "Oh just same old politics." and "Smearing McCain's record." Is there any other explanations? What makes them think that their attacks on Obama are all done in fair game but when Obama responds, its played off as a "Cheap political points."
WHY, FIRST READ, does no one ask McCain what is wrong with questioning his military judgement.  No one said that he didn't deserve credit for being shot down and all.  Folks are just saying that is not ENOUGH to qualify him to be president, which is just self-evidently true.  Why doesn't someone ask McCain what the big deal is?  To me, it seems he is affraid about discussing the substance of his military record and judgement.
Ok MSNBC and other MSM, do you think we can move on to more pressing matters.  McCain's service and POW experience is a matter of record, that's all.  It hasn't anything to do with what he might be as a POTUS.

I wish the repub trolls that post here and enabled by the MSM, would stop trying to make issue of Gen Clark's remarks, we know you are in lockstep with the military and patriotism and all that jazz, but they are culture issues that the GOP thrives on and gins up the base to make themselves feel better.

I see McCain took his two nannies (Graham and Lieberman) with on his jaunt to Columbia and Mexico. What a crew!
when is the McCain campaign going to tell their surrogates like Charlie Black and Lieberman that a terrorist attack will benefit him. When is the McCain camp going to stop the smears that Obama and his wife are unpatrioic and the racial slurs that have been said from his party. You cannnot have it both ways McCain. Go Obama for standing on principle ans stick with Clark. What clark said is the truth.
Where was all the right wing outrage when Kerry's heroism and patriotism were questioned?  And of course Wesley Clark has NEVER questioned McCain's honor in that way.  Just said getting shot down doesn't mean you have a right to be considered qualified for the presidency.  Pretty obvious.

Also, that McCain he never held a high wartime command with a high level of executive responsibility.  Perfectly accurate. The folks who made "swift boat" a dirty word  instead of the badge of honor it ought to be don't have a leg to stand on here.
"The McCain campaign will not sit idly by and let these ongoing attacks go unanswered.” "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Why does this sound like a preview of what a McCain administration would say to Iran, Syria, and anyone else who doesn't agree with them? We don't need someone with such thin skin with their finger on the red button. Ever.
Enough with the Clark incident.  Everybody said things they meant.

I can't believe the rethuglican cry babies are still going on about this.  Is there a problem with McCain in which he feels inadequate about running on this platform?  How is this tough, how is this proper for his campaign to be running around talking about this constantly?

What part of I don't care don't they comprehend?  Grow a set and let's talk policy!  Oh...they have screwed up so bad, if I were them I wouldn't want to talk policy either.
I mean....come on here people.
What can you expect McCain to do if elected and THEN attacked by everyone from his VP choice to his Cabinet members to World Leaders? Is he going to hide behind a part of his life that was partly his own fault (POW)? He got himself shot down...not Obama. He got himself captured...not Obama. Citing ancient history as your reply to the problems of the world to make others think you know what you are doing is both senile and an exercise in futility.

I really cannot see McCain as anything respectable if this is how he deals with LIFE in the public eye!
Attacks? I don't see any attacks other than McCain having a faux outrage attack.

Nuff Ced?
This is ridiculous. He said the speech was written a couple of months in advance. He didn't give to rebut Gen. Clark dummies. People that are running McCain's campaign arent very intelligent. Why should we or the people of Ohio lose sleep?! Who cares. He wasn't even disrespecting his servic, grow up! You can call out Obama, but you can't be called out?! How incredibly childish! You need to be vetted sir. If you can tout your military experience as being ready for POTUS then man up and get vetted like everyone else on the issue
"The McCain campaign will not sit idly by and let these ongoing attacks go unanswered.”
--------------------------------------

Why stick to the real issues facing Americans (which apparently is too difficult for McCain) when you can spend time talking about some perceived slight.  More diversions from the (and I say this sarcastically) "Straight Talk Express".
The McLame campaign is beating a horse that wasn't even in the race, let alone dead - For Pete's sake - Clark was RESPONDING to Schieffer by specifically RESTATING the question AS IT WAS ASKED -

As stupid as this is - I guess I hope they keep wasting time being so clearly without anything substanitive to make an issue out of -

Obama in a landslide
The only thing that is "inartful" is the Obama would have us think he didn't put Clark and Webb up to this line of attack.

The next quote Obama should use is:  " You can fool some of the people some of the time, most of the people most of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

On Election Day - Obama will better understand this phrase.
If McCain  doesn't want his record besmirched release the record like Kerry did. He is a substandard nominee and the MSM will not cover his story. He has no character except that of a womanizing, social climber. He liked being a flyboy because it allowed him to lead a lifestyle, even though his poor performance at the Naval Academy did not support being trained as a pilot. He was an Admirals kid, and got the assignment. Then he crashed several planes and bitterly quit the navy once it became apparent he would never reach admiral himself, even after being a POW.
His character IS questionable and only by releasing ALL of his military record can he put this behind him
"All Barack Obama has to do is tell his campaign surrogates to stop criticizing John McCain's record of service and this discussion would be over. "
-------------------------------------------------
Translation into English: All Obama has to do is stop criticizing McCain on ANYTHING so that he can win the election without having to work weekends.

What a joke! Clark did not "smear" McCain, and he said nothing that was untrue, which is the big difference between him and the Swift Liars, one of which is now working for McCain after he called them "dishonest and dishonorable."
From the mouths of John -

Waaaaaahhhhh Mommy,

He (Gen. Clark) is talking about me again.  Make him stop!  Sniff, sniff.
Is it me, or is the McCain Campaign (though, interestingly, not the candidate himself) starting to sound like a whiny, petulant five-year-old? Obama dealt with the issue. Nobody cares anymore. Not only that, but he turned it right around by showing it to be just another one of these media-driven stories. And he's ABSOLUTELY right to say that this is NOTHING like the disgusting attacks on John Kerry in 2004. Anybody who really thinks that Wes Clark's comments are anything near what was said about Kerry (I don't recall anybody questioning McCain's patriotism the way the Swift Boaters did Kerry's) needs to go away; you're not helping your candidate or this country.

"I'm don't have anger problem; I have an idiot problem." ~ Hank Hill
ONCE AGAIN, CLARK DID NOT ATTACK MCCAIN'S RECORD, I THING HE IS AFRAID THAT IF PEOPLE DO QUESTION HIS MILITARY RECORD THEY MAY FIND SOMETHING THERE THAT JOHN DOES NOT WANT ANY BODY TO FIND!!!
It’s not Democrats that say your military service doesn’t qualify you to be President.  Republicans made this abundantly clear in 2004 when they got two draft dodgers elected and attacked Kerry’s Vietnam service.
