Mandela on U.S. terror list?

Posted: Tuesday, July 01, 2008 4:30 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Who knew Nelson Mandela was on the US terror watch list? Well as of today, he's not anymore.

This morning, President Bush signed into law a bill granting Secretary Rice the authority to waive travel restrictions on President Mandela and other members of the African National Congress (ANC). The bill was sponsored by Democratic Sens. John Kerry and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Republican Sen. Bob Corker.

The senators say Mandela and ANC members remained on the list "for activities they conducted against South Africa's apartheid regime decades ago." They also said in their written statement that the removal "end[s] an embarrassing impediment to improving U.S.-South Africa relations."

In announcing the president had signed of the bill, the White House did not mention Mandela by name. Instead the statement states rules under current law that "render aliens inadmissible due to terrorist or criminal activities would not apply with respect to activities undertaken in association with the [ANC] in opposition to apartheid rule in South Africa."

"It's high time we honored his message of human dignity and valor by removing unjustified travel restrictions placed on him and other members of the ANC," said Kerry. Whitehouse added, "This problem has caused injustice to South African leaders and embarrassment to the United States, and I'm glad it will be repaired."

Leave it to America to ban a black man for fighting for his freedom!
Sometimes, this country makes me cry.
Wow, after all these years? It's a shame he remained on a terror list during the Clinton years and just last week you had Bill shamelessly attending a birthday party in Mandela's honor. Shame on you America!
Too bad, I'm afraid Mr. Mandela might try to sneak into the country to vote for Obama.
It makes you wonder if anyone in Guantanamo will be an international hero 60 years from now...
Never to late to right a wrong.  There should be more implementation of this.  Unfortunately, this is not the only embarrassment.  How sad!
"This problem has caused injustice to South African leaders and embarrassment to the United States, and I'm glad it will be repaired."

When historians look back at the administration of 2000-2008, this is going to be one of the least embarassing things our moron of a President has done.
Can we take Cat Stevens off the list too?
Reporting that, 'President Nelson Mandela', (show some respect, and address him, an international martyr, by his proper title), was placed on the terrorists roles decades ago, without telling us who put him there is shabby journalism. Tell us what bigot adopted the same principles of apartheid, (that restricted the travel of Black Africans in South Africa), with the same sanctions on 'PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA's ability to travel to the US.

I don't care who it was, they deserve to be exposed.
Too bad, I'm afraid Mr. Mandela might try to sneak into the country to vote for Obama.

I'm ashamed of you Bobbi. Crude, and rude about everything, that's you.

Why don't you do yourself a favor and get off the blog?  You're eaten up with hate and who needs more of that on these sites?
So he is still on the terrorist list, just with added ability to travel to America??? - meaning a terrosist with rights to travel freely in the US?

Or was his name actualy removed from the federal/white house terrorist list of names?
Bobbi, Eau Claire:

Shhhhhhhh.
"Who knew Nelson Mandela was on the US terror watch list?"

Um, everyone?  This was reported in "The USA Today" back in April:

U.S. has Mandela on terrorist list
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-04-30-watchlist_N.htm
Why in the hell did it take until 2008????????????

Didn't the entire world agree with Mandela back in 1988??????

We look like morons to the world sometimes because of our own actions.
Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI:

You're afraid that someone extra might vote for Obama. Could this be your inartful admission that people such as yourself will need to do everything possible to prevent an Obama win?

Sucks to be ignorant. Everything you say is well understood by adversaries.
Leave it to Bush-Lite to NOT admit his part in the silly decision to have Mandela ON the list in the first place.
NEWS BULLITIN

The McCains have now paid off their property taxes in CA.
Too bad, I'm afraid Mr. Mandela might try to sneak into the country to vote for Obama.

He would be in a long line of Nobel Prize winners doing so....

Don't forget to bring yours when you vote for McC...ohhhh that's right.

Couldn't we have taken Mandela off this last week or two weeks ago, and let President Bill Clinton share the news with him in person since Bill went to Mandela's birthday party in London?

Or, is it just me?  I sometimes think we do things to be spiteful towards other people.
And by the way, interesting that the people who were committed to apartheid probably aren't/weren't ever, on the list?
What is very disheartening is the hypocrisy of the US government. They supported the white surpremacist government of South Africa, took uranium from there inorder to make WMDs. Along the way the watched and supported this white supremacist crush these innocent Africans.

Be very afraid; because you are so ignorant; if you believe that. The old cudgeller McCain who doesn’t know his enemies is most scary.

Oh Bobbi...I'm sure PRESIDENT Obama will invite Mandela to visit the United States again after he takes office in 2009. FYI, Mandela DID visit this country in 1990.
Too bad, I'm afraid Mr. Mandela might try to sneak into the country to vote for Obama.

Shows your lack of class. You need to respect someone who fought for the freedom of his people. He is just as important to his country as the founding fathers are to our country.
Wonder if McCain was opposed to this. Can't be too sure about those black men...

Do you ever have anything positive to say?  I'll sure be glad when school starts!
Mandela was the leader of the terrorist African National Congress (ANC), an avowed Marxist-Leninist gang which murdered hundreds of men, women and children, including innocent Jews, during decades of grisly attacks.

Source: The State v. Nelson Mandela et al, Supreme Court of South Africa, Transvaal Provincial Division, 1963-1964, Indictment.

Or, maybe Bush is pretty much going to be in Truman's shoes, as he is now. He was despised worldwide for Hiroshima and Nagasaki ... and 60 years later is ranked in every top ten presidents list there is for what how right his decisions were in retrospect. So please keep in mind that the "historians look back" argument is a double-edged sword.
USA TODAY had the story on Mandela being on the watch list two months ago. Here it is: http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20080501/a_watchlist01.art.htm
One can always tell when there are problems in the Boobie boarding house. She comes out with racist statements that leave us wondering if she ever completed night school. You should be in a better mood Boobie, 4th of July vacationers are on the road and might have to resort to staying in your facility.
To Bobbi of Eau. WI:

I don't know who or what you are (white, black, spanish, etc. or someone from Mars)but tracking all the comments you have been posting, I do find that you are ignorant.
How pathetic - no wonder the world has had it with America.  When you treat one of the greatest men of modern history this way..............so very, very sad.  It makes me ashamed of my country - again.
Under current definitions, George Washington would be on the list.
and people can still question why it is so freakin difficult to be proud of this country all the time?
He should never have been on this list in the first place. And people wonder why African-Americans see this country differently than do whites.  It should be obvious.  This is shameful.
Sad country American! Everyone who fights for freedom is a terrorist. This country was founded by terrorist yet anyone now who does the same thing is a terrorist.
Sad very sad....
Bobbi,Eau Claire, WI: That comment is beneath even you. And you and McCain are crying like little girls about what Wes Clark said about McCains' miliary experience when you make such a denigrating and repugnant remark about a real hero, a great man, a real patriot Mr. Nelson Mandella, shame on you!  As I stated before on this blog,I, too have not been proud of my country at various times and this is one of them.
"Too bad, I'm afraid Mr. Mandela might try to sneak into the country to vote for Obama."

Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI

It was just a matter of time before ignorance reared it's idiotic head, and why am I not surprised that you had to be the one Bobbi?  You never cease to amaze or disappoint us.
Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI-
Does any and all situations require some non-sensical and derogatory remark about Obama?? -Even when the topic at hand has absolutely NOTHING to do with Obama? I will tell you what- when Obama wins the Presidency I hope you have health insurance coverage because you will need mental health services very badly! If you have it, you better check ahead of time to see how many visits to  a psychiatrist they cover.
Of course Bush didn't mention Nelson Mandela by name - it would be embarrassing to admit the administration has considered him a terrorist for all these years.
Why did this just happen now?  It's amazing as an American - especially one who had the honor to meet Mandela in 1990 - for me to contemplate.  Just amazing.  Mandela  is truly the greatest living leader in this world.  And, for my country to wait this long to give him the most basic right to enter my country.  Just sad.
this makes one wonder how effective this watch list is. If a man of peace such as nelson mandela is listed on the terrorist watch list, what standards are used to develope the list. How do you decide what is a terrorist group and what is not. Are the tamil tigers terrorists or freedom fighters. Would the contras be considered terrorists. If a group was attacking the government of cuba using bombs, guns etc would they be a terrorist group. Are only rebels fighting american enemies terrorists, or are all rebels fighting what they see as an oppressive government terrorists.
c_sexton of Colorado Springs, CO., before you go blaming the bush administration for this enbarassing situation remember mandela was on the list during the clinton administration as well, and just last week clinton went to his 90th birthday party. so this is really an enbarassment to all of us no matter what political party we belong to.
They also retroactively took Gandhi and Mother Teresa of Calcutta off the list.
