Veepstakes update: Obama on Sebelius

Posted: Tuesday, July 01, 2008 6:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli

THE SHORT LIST. Obama told a Missouri station: “I love Kathleen Sebelius. I think she is as talented a public official as there is right now. Integrity. Competence. She can work with all people of all walks of life, but I promised that I am not going to say anything about my vice president until I actually introduce my vice president.”

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO. Colin Powell met with Obama on June 18. He and John McCain chatted on June 14, per NBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

Wes Clark again stood by his comments in an interview on MSNBC with Mitchell. And for McCain, Carly Fiorina again pushed back, saying he is a surrogate for the Obama camp.

VIDEO: Sen. McCain's campaign says that Sen. Jim Webb, on Countdown Monday, was renewing the attack on McCain's military service launched by Wesley Clark on Sunday. But where is this in Sen. Webb's statements on the broadcast? Democratic strategist Chris Kofinis discusses.

And Sen. Jim Webb had to deny that he demeaned McCain’s service when he said he needed to “calm down.”

BUZZ METER. The efforts to unite Democrats -- including the Hillary Clinton/Obama Unity event -- dominated news coverage last week.

But Reuters finds that the chances of a “dream ticket” are increasingly less likely according to online speculators. Webb and Mitt Romney are seen as the most likely Democratic and Republican picks, respectively.

Wall Street Journal looked at how Al Gore or Joe Biden could fill in some gaps in Obama’s resume.

An influential NJ pastor likes Obama-Biden.

CHATTERING CLASS. Marc Ambinder, and loads of Mike Huckabee supporters, wonder why HuckPAC is supporting Rep. Don “Bridge to Nowhere” Young (R-AK).

Cillizza looks at LA Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R) handling of the pay raise. And one of his consultants said that he “did something that's not in the political playbook -- he admitted a mistake and corrected it -- and he didn't try to hide any of it or pretend it was the plan all along.”

New Republic’s Cohn thinks Romney would be a shrewd choice.

ELECTORAL MATH. Joe Lieberman’s approval rating is under 50 percent in CT for the first time. And Chris Dodd has also taken a hit, with his lowest net approval ever.

I don't see Hillary as Obama's running mate, and selecting any other woman would be an insult to all of the women who supported Hillary. Who wants 4 more years of the Clintons?

I like Jim Webb. He will not alienate Clinton primary voters and I like his military experience. This will be the first time I have voted democratic in the presidential election since 1976. I respect John McCain and have actually donated money to him. But the more I see the direction Bush and the Repulican's have sent this great country, the more I think we need a drastic change, tax increases and all. By the way, I am from South Carolina, a blue state, right?
I like Kathleen Sebelius,  I just hope Obama realizes that choosing her my be an indirect slap in the face to the women who would of otherwise have voted for Clinton, and had assumed that if a women was chosen for VP it would of been her.  Eitherway....Obama 08/12 !!

I believe many are getting thier nose twisted over the comments made by Webb and Clark. There was nothing demeaning about them, it is a fact; flying and being a POW does not automatically qualify you for President. He wore the uniform with honor, many of us did. It is his work, after service, that makes him qualified to lead the nation. Please, we are getting a bit too huffy-puffy over this.
Carly Fiorina???  This woman is so incompetent that she was paid $26 million by her last employer just to "go away".  When she's Secretary of the Treasury will the government pay for he facelifts they way HP did???
Obama told a Missouri station: “I love Kathleen Sebelius. I think she is as talented a public official as there is right now. Integrity. Competence.

There were also people who think the Clintons had Integrity and that is obvious that they don't.  Wouldn't hold to much to these comments, the last thing Obama is going to do right now is trash a fellow Dem.

Republican in 08
I think it is smart for Obama to be using his surrogates to bring down John McCain's overblown war record. He was shot out of the sky by the Viet Cong trying to blow up their villages. Then held prisoner. What's so heroic about that? He deserves credit for being a good soldier and for being patriotic ( apparently he didn't give up any secrets), but he makes it seem as if he is untouchable or a foreign policy guru because he got shot out of the sky. If the Repubs can discredit Max Cleland ( Lost his legs) war record and John Kerry ( who actually did save lives in Vietnam). Then John McCain is fair game. He should stop crying and get back to campaigning.
The GOP are spin masters (and nasty ones at that)...let's hope the American Public is not as gullible as in past elections.  We must get this Administration and everyone associated with them out of office!
