McCain's statements on the economy

On ABC this morning, Robin Roberts remarked to McCain: "You have admitted that you are not exactly the expert when it comes to the economy and many have said that... "

McCain interjected, "I have not. I have not. Actually, I have not. I said that I am stronger on national security issues because of all the time I spent in the military and others. I am very strong on the economy. I understand it. I have a lot more experience than my opponent."

VIDEO: AAA reports that gas is at a record high of $4.087, yet a new ad by the McCain campaign shows the price of gas as $2.55. The Nation's Chris Hayes joins Countdown to talk about whether the senator is out of touch.

While McCain has never said that he wasn't an "expert" on the economy, he has acknowledged that it is a shortcoming -- which was at the heart of Roberts' question ("not exactly the expert").

"The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should,” McCain said in December 2007. “I’ve got Greenspan’s book.”

And here's what he told the Wall Street Journal's Stephen Moore in 2005: “I’m going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated.”

This isn't the first time McCain has tried to sidestep his past quotes on the economy. At a GOP presidential debate back in January, the late Tim Russert asked McCain this question: "Sen. McCain, you have said repeatedly, quote, 'I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated.' Is it a problem for your campaign that the economy is now the most important issue, one that by your own acknowledgment you're not well versed on?"

McCain replied at the debate, "Actually, I don't know where you got that quote from. I'm very well versed in economics. I was there at the Reagan revolution. I was there when we enacted the first -- or just after we enacted the first tax cuts and the restraints on spending."

But appearing on Meet the Press later that week, McCain admitted, "Now I know where you got that quote from. Now I know where you got the quote from... Let me tell you what I was trying to say and what I meant in that soundpiece. I spent 22 years in the military. I spent 20 years in the Senate Armed Services Committee. I've been involved in national security issues all my life... Of course I know more about national security than any other issue. That's been my entire life. Am I, am I smart on economics? Yes."

With Olberman's German ancestry he should really lay off using the LiberalSpeak word for Jew. "neo-con" Someone might start thinking about GE being a military contractor, the richest man in the world loaning his company name to this station, and the fact that the Nazis were Socialist and create some sort of conspiracy theory. It's also funny that anyone at this station would question the price of gas in an ad when they always use some Liberal crap hole district (higher taxes) to show the rest of the country how high gas prices are.
The Truth : '...The President has nothing to do with the economy...'

right !
The President just lies about WMDs and fakes intelligence to get us into illegat wars
The President just authorizes torture and violations of the Geneva Convention
The President just politicizes the Dept of Justice by appointing unqualified cronies who hire and indict on the basis of politics
And tghe President just suspends heabeus corpus and other civil liberties

Is THAT why you're SUPPORTING McCain ???

John McCain, Ednless War
McCain is offering himself up as another corporate puppet, much like Bush was: their philosophy is, let the market sort everything out, even if the "market" is willing to fry the planet in pursuit of profit. Drown the government in a bathtub, even if that means communities also drown. Its the Darwinian philosophy of economics endorsed by people who are against teaching Darwinian science in middle schools.
McCain's campaign is not unlike Giuliani's:  rather than a sentence consisting of a noun, a verb & 9/11, McCain's sentences contain a noun, a verb and POW hero.  (What was he doing in his plane?  Dropping napalm?)
yeah...the late Tim Russert...no one will ever replace him as a political journalist.

I get so frustrated now when I watch political shows, that let campaign talking heads go on and on...and on and on...
and no one holds their feet to the fire!  Just blathering their talking points...talking over one another...slamming each side with insults.  Can ANYONE ask a question...and then POINT OUT they didn't answer the question.  And when they are slamming each other with middle school like insults...could SOMEONE asks them to stop it...and ANSWER THE QUESTION.  It's like watching two idiots argue...ummm...who's the winner...I can't tell...and they was no intelligent information in any of it!
Tim Russert...he was a man of truth.  Not a political pundit talking head...with his own political agenda.
Their was no one who had the honesty and insight this man had.  It never got personal with Tim, he went after issues, lies, flip flopping.    Tim didn't talk to about gossip, he didn't fall into campaign conference calls about subjective "words". He asked tough questions...and he gave them a chance to answer it.  If it wasn't answered enough for him, and he knew US, he followed up!!
He spoke and WE listened...like the intelligent citizens we are.  Tim Russert didn't DUMB DOWN!  He knew we were intelligent enough, he explained politics like no other! And he knew we cared enough about REAL ISSUES, and in depth political conversations, that we would GET IT, even when it was complicated!!
Sunday isn't the same in this house anymore!  Without Tim...our brains will be turned into a political pun-ditty mush!
Can some one please step it up...and Go get 'em!! PLEASE???

McCain did say he knew nothing about the economy...I saw it on MEET THE PRESS with TIM RUSSERT!!
Enough said.

After the war mccain has nothing in the gas tank for America...much like the bushies in general
McCain "I never said nothing!"  Isn't that what he always does.  Now he's complaining about absolutly everything.  I don't like Cindy, but can you imagine having to live with this man?  Cindy, hey you trollip, can you find my glasses?  He has got the personality of the old man next door yelling at the kids to be quiet!  I hate the old fart.
EJ

Cindy has paid off their tax bill.

See - John McCain is self destructing.  ALL he has to do is talk.

He can't keep track of all his lies; and now he can't even get his lies straight.

Great - this will be a cake walk for Barack Obama.

The GOP and their support are becoming less and less each day because of John McCain and his non-sense.

The conservatives will only have name calling left ...as you can tell already.  That's the only talking point they have.....Just ask "The Truth" he can't even give a positive response to John McCain bull here on the blog...but he can call names.

Laughable

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
When you compare the two candidates in terms of "soundness of mind"....well, there is simply no comparison. All Obama has to do is lay in the weeds and let McCain beat himself.
Good Lord McCain have you ever heard of VIDEO - they have a recorded image of you making the statement on economics.  You're just blatantly embarrassing yourself now.
He means he doesn't care much about the economy since he has his wife who is rich from the beer market.  And we all know no matter what happens to the economy people will still buy beer.
You can look at that brand new shiny jet and see how much he knows about the economy.
What must people think about that when they have to decide between gas and feeding their families?????

What a pud !!!!!!

Flip flopper extraordinaire.....
To Ron Indiana
I agree with you about Hardball last night, it was a pleasure to actually hear what the guests had to say without Chris interrupting all the time. MSNBC should consider Andrea for the permanent host of Hardball, she is very good.
