GOP to launch TV ad blitz against Obama

From NBC's Mark Murray
Beginning this weekend, the Republican National Committee will launch a $3 million advertising blitz against Obama in the battleground states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

VIDEO: Newsweek's Richard Wolffe discusses the latest Quinnipiac poll which shows four key battleground states leaning toward Barack Obama in November.

This first ad will be on the topic on energy security, and it will contrast McCain's and Obama's positions on the issue. The actual content of the ad, however, has yet to be released.

The vendor of this new ad against Obama -- GOP ad-maker Brad Todd -- has issued this statement: "Following Barack Obama's decision to become the only major party presidential candidate in history to not adhere to campaign spending caps, the Republican National Committee has begun an independent expenditure campaign in accordance with FEC regulations. The RNC will first advertise this weekend in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, highlighting the issue of energy security, which is emerging as a defining difference in the race for president."

In response to this ad, the Obama campaign issued this press release: "It has been reported that the Republican National Committee will begin running television ads in a number of battleground states this weekend. As John McCain's own advisors have noted, the RNC and the McCain campaign operate as one unit. And since these ads will likely be attack ads that contradict McCain's pledge to run a respectful campaign, he can, and should, immediately reverse his plan to air them. In fact, a few months ago, McCain urged GOP state party committees to run a respectful campaign, stating, 'I have pledged to conduct a respectful campaign. And I have urged, time after time, various entities within the Republican Party to also do that.' Clearly, the RNC should adhere to the same standard."

An important (yet inside-baseball) note: While the RNC is paying for this advertising blitz, it is coming from its independent expenditure unit. What that means is that the RNC has nothing to do with the ad's message or content; a vendor -- in this case, Brad Todd -- is responsible for that.

This, in fact, was an issue in that infamous RNC "Call me" TV ad against Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee in 2006. It was an ad paid for by the RNC, but they were able to deny --legitimately -- that they had anything to do with the message. Both political parties utilize independent expenditure TV ads.

*** UPDATE *** RNC spokesman Alex Conant responds, “Barack Obama broke his promise to run a positive campaign when he joined forces with the DNC and MoveOn, who for months have run false ads attacking John McCain. How can Obama call for a positive campaign, even as his surrogates continue to unapologetically smear John McCain? It’s clear Obama does not mind political attacks – just attacks that hurt his political interests. Once again Obama is putting his own political interests first and holding everyone to a higher standard than he holds himself.”

Move.on, MOVE OUT!!!
I haven't heard Obama come out against the left wing attack machines (moveon.org, Huffington post, code pink, etc).  Obama will claim the attacks are racial.
I am really, really sure that if Senator Obama had taken public financing, the GOP would not be running these ads.

lol

P.S. I seem to remember another candidate running lots of attack ads against Senator Obama . . . wonder how that worked out? :)
Swiftboating by others on behalf of Mr. Straight Talk still reflects badly on him and his campaign!!!!!!
Hey Chuck.  Are you related to this Brad Todd fella?  You guys should display Brad's photo.  It looks like Chuck and Brad could be cousins or something.  He's trying to steal the goatee look that Chuck made famous.

On another note, it appears to have been a very smart move by the Obama camp to have passed on public financing.  Just in the past few days, groups have been assembling to attempt to take the good senator down.
I wish people will stop saying that Wisconsin is a battleground State.  If the RNC wants to waste its money here on McCain then I'm all for it because that's money they can't spend in Colorado and Virginia.  But it's not IF Obama will win, but by how much.  Chicago is only 80 miles South of Milwaukee so he's as popular here as Russ Feingold.
Actually, I don't think it's "legitimate" to deny responsibility for the ads' messages.  That goes for both parties.  If they are paying for the ads, they are responsible for whatever message is aired. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous.
McCain needs to launch an ad blitz to combat Obama's flip flops--flip flop on FISA, flip flop on negotiating with enemies, etc.--Obama's just another politician.

And, Michelle Obama is waaaaayyyy too abrasive to be First Lady. Much, much too abrasive---

Michelle needs to go to charm school. Period.

You know the old saying... you can take the woman out of the South Side of Chicago, but you can't take the South Side of Chicago out of the woman!

Go McCain! McCain 08/12!
Exactly why the Obama machine did what it did .. it has to combat these scummy republicans sideshows.  What will bite McOld in the but is every American KNOWS THIS AND RESPECTS OBAMAS DECISION.  It's only RNC and stupid pundits that beef about it.
I can hear the media tide turning. Two weeks ago, it was bam-bam-bam against Obama. But now, the McCain Campaign is screwing up too much for them not to take notice. Obama's campaign is a well-oiled machine; McCain's is a bit of a joke. Explains the reshuffling.
Let's see just how "Christian" the republicans are in these ads.  I am certain that Senator Obama/DNC will have their own answer to these ads.
I would advise the DNC to start airing the "I didn't love America..." by John McCain.
What a joke!  Does Mr. McSame and his mindless band of merry men even know what day it is? What they said yesterday? Here comes the cloaked racist crap from a party that lost its soul years ago and has nothing else to offer but fear .... fear of African Americans, fear of Latinos, fear of the young, educated generation about to take over and make its mark in history, and fear of anyone who isn't an old born-again christian, a warmonger, and glued to Fox Noise all day. It's a recipe for failure, as well it should be, and it will be crushed into oblivion in November.
[What that means is that the RNC has nothing to do with the ad's message or content.]
--They can control the content with their and John McCain's pocketbook (vote with their feet).  If either the GOP or the McCain campaign honestly disapproved of the ads content, they wouldn't pay to have it made.

--Interesting how MN will not be a state.  Particularly interesting with what that means about Gov. Pawlenty's VP chances (not likely a state to flip).
If you pay a hit man but don't tell him how to carry out the act does that really absolve you of responsibility?  The RNC is of course fully responsible if they put out the contract.

Does this sound like a bunch of BS to anyone else?  If both political parties use these tactics before or now, I see this as shameful cowardice, for both parties.  What?  PAY for the AD, but they don't have to own up to the ad.  So this makes it okay?  We as voters will say, oh, well since it didn't really come from the RNC or the DNC we won't hold them responsible.  Puleeeze.  We know where this crap is going.  The poll numbers are such that the good ol' Rupugs need to send out the attack dogs.  Well all I can say is...see how well that line of thinking worked for Hillary.
The RNC can release any ads they want regarding the differences between McCain and Obama on energy policies.  If they are truthful, Obama comes out looking like the winner.  If the ads distort the truth about Obama's policies, voters will be turned off.  We're tired of negative smears and fear tactics!

People, please remember:

Obama wants to develop alternative energies to get us off of our dependence on expensive, polluting fossil fuels.

Obama is against off-shore drilling that will hurt the environment and not help with gas prices.

McCain and Bush pushed for off-shore drilling; a few days later, McCain acknowleges that it won't help with our current energy problems and that the idea was proposed  for the "psychological impact" (see http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/06/24/1163504.aspx).  Unfortunately, there is no quick fix, especially as long as corporations are allowed to speculate and oil companies are not encouraged to drill on leases they already own or to build new refineries.

I want a leader who really researches ideas before he proposes them. I want a leader who cares about the impact of his ideas/solutions on the environment, the economy, and on our pocket books--not on our "feelings". That's Barack Obama!

Launch your lies and diversions RNC...do your worst. Sen. Obama is going to continue standing and widening the gap because the American people are sick of your methods.  Senator Obama has already shown fantastic composure under pressure and projected a presidential demeanor.  Can anyone say that about McCain and his campaign?
Yeah McBush, you were soooooooooo disappointed about Obama's supposed back track on his pledge for public financing(which didn't happen, by the way), I'm sure you would NEVER go back on your pledge to run a civil campaign now would you McBush.

I mean you are supposed to be an honorable man right McBush?  And honorable men don't go back on their pledges do they McBush.
McCain is a liar, period.  He proves it daily.
Dirk, Brunswick, Georgia if michelle needs to go to charm school, cindy needs to go back to rehab!!! they can give her the room she has had for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
