Obama's national call to service

Posted: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 4:39 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Obama called public service a responsibility of citizenship and said Americans should “think about what you can do to shape the country that we love.”

That theme echoed the familiar lines of John F. Kennedy’s January 1961 inaugural address when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.”

VIDEO: Filling in for Sen. Edward Kennedy, Sen. Barack Obama told Wesleyan's class of 2008, "Through service, I discovered how my own improbable story fit into the larger story of America.

In a speech that was mainly a comprehensive repackaging of proposals Obama has been talking about for months, the presumptive Democratic nominee laid out a plan to encourage service by expanding AmeriCorps, doubling the size of the Peace Corps, expanding the Foreign Service and increasing the size of the U.S. military to ease the burden on troops.

The proposal would integrate community service into education at all levels by making federal assistance to school districts conditional on the development of service programs and tying college tuition credits to community service. It would also encourage veterans and retirees to give back to their communities and help nonprofits expand successful programs.

The plan would cost about $3.5 billion per year when it is fully implemented, according to the campaign fact sheet. Obama would pay for it in part by ending the war in Iraq and cancelling provisions that help multinational corporations pay less in U.S. taxes on income earned abroad.

After a three-week economic tour, Obama has been spending the week leading up to the Fourth of July talking less about new policy and more about a larger vision for America and his love for the country. He spoke about what patriotism meant to him on Monday in Missouri about helping faith-based groups provide social services in Ohio on Tuesday and will discuss honoring and taking care of veterans tomorrow in North Dakota before celebrating Independence Day with his family in Montana – all states that voted Republican in 2004.

The geography of this week’s swing is the latest evidence of a campaign that aims to expand the electoral map and to appeal to voters across party lines.

"I’m determined to reach out -- not just to Democrats, but to Independents and Republicans, to every single American who wants to move this country in a new direction,” Obama said. “That’s why I won’t just ask for your vote as a candidate -- I will ask for your service and your active citizenship when I am President of the United States. This won’t be a call issued in one speech or one program -- this will be a central cause of my presidency. We will ask Americans to serve. We will create new opportunities for Americans to serve. And we will direct that service to our most pressing national challenges.”

As he often does, the Illinois senator linked the topic of the day to his own life, touching on his days as a community organizer in Chicago and talking about how community service had taught him more about what it means to be an American.

“Through service, I found a community that embraced me; citizenship that was meaningful; the direction that I'd been seeking,” he said. “Through service, I discovered how my own improbable story fit into the larger story of America.”

Calling public service an American responsibility, he hailed the service of those in the military, but also of teachers, diplomats, firefighters and others and mentioned the tragedy of September 11th as a moment when Americans came together to help one another but also an opportunity that was missed, as people were asked not to sacrifice but to go shopping.

“Instead of a call for shared sacrifice, we saw tax cuts go to the wealthiest Americans in a time of war,” he said. “Instead of leadership that called us to come together we got patriotism defined as the property of one party and used as a political wedge and we ended up going into a war that should have never been authorized and should have never been waged.”

In closing, he reprised a theme he used often during the long primary season as he fought to overcome a better-known rival who had been heavily favored to win. He asked people to ignore the cynics and to believe in the potential for unity among diverse groups.

“I know what the cynics will say. I’ve heard from them all my life. These are the voices that will tell you -- not just what you can’t do -- but what you won’t do. Americans won’t come together -- our allegiance doesn’t go beyond our political party, or our race, or our region, or our religion, our congregations,” he said. “Young Americans they won’t serve their country -- they’re too selfish, they’re too apathetic, they’re too lazy. This is the soft sell of the status quo, the voice that tells you to settle because settling isn’t that bad. That’s not the America that I’ve seen throughout this campaign.”

After the event, Obama was set to visit nearby Peterson Air Force base, which houses NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) and Northcom (US Northern Command), and to visit the U.S. Air Force Academy, trips an aide said were set up by his Senate office.

Obama is getting this country back on track--we've wandered way off course.  I like the idea that his proposal for encouraging volunteerism and service to community will cost a tiny fraction of what the war has cost us, and it will benefit people in many ways.

Go Obama!
“Through service, I found a community that embraced me
-------------------------------
Through service? No, dude, you were in a paid position!  Quit embellishing yourself as something you're not. What sservice did you do BEFORE you were in a paid position?  And, since Athena felt the need to mention Kennedy in her piece, we'll all be prepared for the swooning and cries of how much Obama is like Kennedy. BS!!  Even though he was a cheat and a womanizer, Kennedy had more class, expertise than Obama could ever dream of having.
See, this is why you gotta love Barack.  He inspires all of us to think OUT of the box.  Hey, what a concept.  Instead of cramming us into that same ol' small steel cage of fear and indifference that has grabbed our country by the throat for 7 years.
Oh, get ready, Athena said Obama gave a Kennedy-like speech today.  Let's all watch tonight to see how Chris Matthews shakes the tingle out!
Yeah and we saw a bunch of rich Liberals saying I should pay more taxes and giving little or nothing to charity. (no donating to democrat politicians and democrat organizations doesn't count as charity)
Since Obama has moved on to contest against McCain, I'm having a ton of fun.

His message is wonderful. He is uniting us. If we are blessed with him as our next President, it's going to be beautiful.

I've done volunteer teaching for many years. I look forward to doing more, and other good deeds as well.

George Herbert talked about 'a thousand points of light', but he gave us no substantive direction.
Senator Obama’s Patriotism – What it means to this Navy Veteran.  I hope you consider the following article: Senator Obama's Patriotism - a Veteran's Perspective
It is found at:

Tomorrow will be a bit of a new experiment at culturethreads:  A Day as A Typical American.  I will go an entire day without looking at a political news website.  I'll just checking my email, and watch the evening news and glance at the front pages of newspapers.  I'll also listen to what co-workers at talking about, and glance at the fronts of the newspapers as I walk by them.

I will then write a report for Friday morning that gives my impressions of that day's political events from tht perspective.  This may give valuable insight into what swing voters are seeing, as opposed to we would digest oodles on online newsbit every hour.
The resurrection of volunteer programs, community based programs, will bring young people into the social reformation Obama is advocating.  These programs will be a significantly more effective than any of the "Faith Based Initiatives" Obama talked about yesterday.  Politics and religion are like oil and water.  That's why the saparation was included in the Constitution.
How could anyone honestly compare Obama and McCain and think that McCain would actually make the better President?

Obama has succeeded despite a missing father, McCain only succeeded because of his father.

Obama is exactly who Republicans want every one to be, a self made man who lifted himself up by his own hard work, who is happily married and unapologeticly and publicly Christian.

Too bad, the RNC will do anything and everything to tear him down so that nepotism will win again.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain, who graduated 894 out of 899 from the Naval Academy at Annapolis because he admittedly preferred playing to studying -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Yeah, he wants to increase the size of the military. BUT he wants to admittedly cut TENS OF BILLIONS from missile defense research and Future Combat Systems that will keep our armed forces safer. AND he's going to forbid weaponizing space and REFUSES to accept nuclear deterrence as a feasible defense strategy.

SO while the rest of the world advances its missile programs and finds new ways to utlize space strategically, we're going to elect this man to hold us back and let them catch up.

From his own lips:

Obama is sooo good in making his ordinary experience look extraordinary... and people are stupid enough to buy it.  As an afterthought, sometimes it's not the politicians that are causing our (national) problems at all but people do(who voted for them in office)... if you want more problems vote for Barack.
Incoming ignorant cries of 'socialism' and right wing paranois in...

excellent speech. I believe we the people are the answer we are waiting for. The goverment cannot address every issue. We the people can assist each other by volunteering our time at food banks, homeless shelter, helping kids learn to read etc. It is great that Obama wants us involve.
This is the soft sell of the status quo, the voice that tells you to settle because settling isn’t that bad. That’s not the America that I’ve seen throughout this campaign.
--I think this is the kind of point that Obama needs to bring forward.  Clearly, John McCain is not going to preach the politics of hope.  But if Barack Obama can run a hopeful, positive, solution-forward campaign, then I don't see how he loses.
Here comes the stories of how whites will be put back into the cotton fields, how the Latinos are secretly trying to chagne the official language to spanish, and howthe chinese have set up aplan to take over our economy, and the Japs want to revenge the atomic bomb. And ofcourse how Obama is not from America, he is the Madhi, the lost/hidden Caliph who is coming back or coming out to save the muslim world by taking over the world - even to others, the Anti-Christ himself!!! To the RNC only white males have full rights and anyone that threatens that is an enemy of the state.
If obama wins they will tell you that it's all about affirmative action. Some will actually walk with fear, with expectations of something to happen, taht quet anxiety like we all had on the eve of the year 2000..........Remember that?

And now look at us, it actually happened, the dark times came due to the Bush/MCCain's policies and they want to tell us that no- Obama is the one that will bring those times, the worst king of them. After all, how can black person be so successful and powerful enough? How can that be, unless he really is the Anti-Christ?

They pander to peoples tendancey to act upon the face of fear and greed. This time choosing fear to pander to you , while their greed rakes in enough money to buy multple luxury homes they even forget they ownmed million dollar beach homes - an honest mistake- I truly believe, but a very telling one none-the-less!
Now that is change we can believe in!

Old ideas with a modern twist.

I think this is great.

GO Obama!!!!! This is our next President Kennedy...

Just say no to MCbush and vote for america's new future that includes all of her people.
First read has really been terrible today. What is so hard to post comments? Lookat all those posts from ealier in the day, 11Am, 12noon and such with only 32, and 12 posts? What in the heck?
At least Obama won't be sending them off to war!
All I can say is wow!!! He is a true leader. All too long Americans have sat by and listened to a presidential candiddate tell us what they would do for us instead of inspiring for us to do for ourselves. It is a well known fact that Americans are the most charitable goup in the world. We give more to charities than any other nation in the world. We as a people need to own that and realize that if we continue to do those things in the interest of our government and take an active role we can turn the country around and eventually the world.
Yes we can is not just a motto it's the truth!
yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
Well, since I work for a non-profit, I sure like the sound of "expansion of successful programs."  It's about time somebody acknowledged the services that we perform for the community are needed.  Thanks, Senator!
Senator Obama differs from McCain in that he recognizes that public service in the peace corps or other types of service are just as honorable as serving in the military.  Senator Obama is the candidate I trust will work harder to avoid unnecessary war and is best able to inspire the young to want to serve.  I've served and am thankful for the experience.

McCain needs to launch an ad blitz to combat Obama's flip flops--flip flop on FISA, flip flop on negotiating with enemies, etc.--Obama's just another politician.

And, Michelle Obama is waaaaayyyy too abrasive to be First Lady. Much, much too abrasive---

Michelle needs to go to charm school. Period.

You know the old saying... you can take the woman out of the South Side of Chicago, but you can't take the South Side of Chicago out of the woman!

Go McCain! McCain 08/12!

Wow...just...wow.  Ignorant and a mysogynist.  Go ahead ahead and look to those words up.  I know they have more than 2 syllables.  You know the old saying, you can take the man out of redneck ignorant Georgia, but you cant take the redneck ignorant Georgia out of the man.
Peterson AFB does not house NORAD. NORAD is located in the base of Cheyenne Mountain....yes, inside the mountain. Although El Paso County, county CS is located in, is very repugnant & is the home Focus on the Family there are many Obama supporters here & we are very disappointed that Barack held an "invitation only" rally...
I wonder how his proposals to expand the military will play in communities hit so hard by base closures under GHWB.  Where would the proposed expansion have the most economic impact?

Get on it, FR.  ;)

Have a great Fourth of July, everyone!

"Expanding" "doubling the size of" "increasing the size of"  "plan would cost about $3.5 billion per year".  Increasing the size of our government and spending more are exactly what our country does not need.  Why does Obama think that the government programs are the answer to every problem the country has;  socializing every aspect of our lives is not what America is or what it was ever intended to be.  Obama is the biggest threat to our country; half of the country understands this. The other half is being hoodwinked.
Oh, and he wasn't too cerebral/intellectual.  Nothing wrong with being smart, but it does make it difficult for the average people to relate to what he says.  And that is somewhat why McCain is attempting to paint him as a flip-flopper, because he offers very nuanced and I would argue often correct/best answers, but politically unclear/more-difficult-to-follow answers.  Here in this speech, he was more direct and to-the-point than he sometimes is.

He needs to talk the talk, you know.
Sign me up...This country needs a more positive approach to the worlds needs...
Maybe some people will not hate us as much...
Once a wise man said,
"We serve our needs by respecting the needs of others..."..yeah Barack Obama..Kindness, I'm humbled in that saying...

Ira, Freehold, NJ (Sent Wednesday, July 02, 2008 4:56 PM)

Um, Ira, it's not in the Constitution.  I believe it was Jefferson who first discussed separation of church and state...the word separation is not there.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Nothing Obama has proposed would "respect an establishment of religion" or "prohibit the free exercise thereof."
It's really interesting to watch and listen as people respond or react to Obama's message.  What I'm noticing is pretty simple.  People who like where we are as a nation are afraid, angry, and hateful of Obama.  People who do not like where we are as a nation and who believe (as I believe) that we have in recent years fallen far short of our best ideals and aspirations drink his words like water from a desert well.

That says a whole lot to me.
Thank you Thomas in Phoenix. My feelings exactly.

If you think a gas tax holiday is going to solve all your problems then vote for McCain. If you really want something done about the mess we are all in now then vote for Obama. it's as simple as that.

I think people should start thinking seriously about the real differences between McSame and Obama and let go of all the pent up hatred and ignore the writings of the cowards who spew their hate anonymously on these blogs. Start thinking for yourself and listen to facts instead of the opinions of people you don't even know. You have no idea who these bloggers are or what they want to accomplish by their vile remarks.
"The proposal would integrate community service into education at all levels by making federal assistance to school districts conditional on the development of service programs and tying college tuition credits to community service."
That's how to bring up a new generation of people who LOATHE community service--requiring it for school graduation.  REAL community service comes from a genuine desire to create positive change, a genuine love for one's community and desire to improve it.  It  is definitely good to support community service organizations and volunteerism, but mandatory community service is misguided.

That said, Obama is the least of four evils, the others being McCain, Nader, and Barr.
Man, obama is going to go down in history as the biggest conman of all time. I simply cant beleive people in this country are buying this stuff. Cant wait to see what happens to all of this support when he swears office on the koran and the muslim/terriorts take over. Of course most of you will be in some type of "re-education camp" iam sure.
Is this Obama's version of the Communist country's Youth Corps???
Yay! Obama restores hope in the people! He inspires. We haven't had a leader like him in yearssssssss. Go Obama! Supporters, please visit WhyObama08.org!!
Now this is what makes Obama a leader.  His vision and desire to improve America and challenge us.  We have to move forward or we will most certainly be left behind.  Obama embraces the ideals that make us a great nation and strong people.  He wants to rejuvenate the drive that built our wonderful country.  These are important things in a leader.   Not flag pins, lies about religion, fear, racism, stereotypes, off the cuff comments that don't come out right, or party lines.  McCain's campaign lacks these strengths or for that matter, any substance at all. All I ever hear is McCain trying to tell us why Obama is not the better candidate, but he never tells or shows us why he is a better candidate.  Can anyone tell me why that is? He is like a kid in trouble and he wants to say it was someone elses fault to divert attention. He is the worst candidate for President I have ever seen by far, and it would be nice to see him step up and campaign like a man instead of the childish tactics he is employing now.
guess u have to have a  pro obama message to get on here.
Most people can't even name the five first ladies, does anyone think they will remember these current candidates wives?

Someone said it "is" great Obama wants us involved, yet what does involved mean? The greatest thing a person can do appears to be of service to someone else, why would anyone need a Politician to explain this? Who cares if he wants you to be involved, why should his opinion even matter?

If he wants to be of service to this backwards country, he would start by shrinking government, decriminalizing all drugs or any behavior that does not harm somebody else. That would be a service to the public.

Also, they would implement an alcohol based fuel solution ala Brazil and increase market competition with a revitalization of the economy with a new energy policy based upon local DIY farmers.

Hope will do absolutely nothing in getting these two very important actions done. Hope does nothing to create action, action wills itself into existence. The public needs to know that they do not need permission to bring about these changes, No Obama, no McCain would even matter, if you want to serve your country then help us bring about an alcohol revolution and a decriminalized drug "free market".

Also, forget about paper currency, that only leads to economic instability, if we peg to gold we have something in which people can make a measurement of value. No more theories, no more scare mongering, we lasted for centuries on gold, wake up and figure out problems are in our heads and "fashionable" big brother imposed as democracy as well as censorship of the media. These are the ideas the mainstream media have covered their eyes and ears over. Pretty simple solutions as any good theory needs to be. These ideas put into actions can change more than any politician could ever dream of changing, why wait for permission, why ask for your freedom, they claim to help but actually propose to disable people and enable even greater amounts of disability. The persecution has to end, there are no ordinary ideas or people.
E2,
Obama was paid $12,000 and given an old car!  Do you mean to tell me you don't call that service for a Columbia University graduate?  Get real and stop hating!
