Veepstakes: McCain on Romney

Posted: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 5:43 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli

THE SHORT LIST. John McCain gave his fairly standard answer on Mitt Romney as a VP contender: “Mitt Romney is a great person, and he's done a great job for us, and we're really pleased at the cooperation and help that he's given us and he won millions of Republican votes so there will be a big place for him in the Republican party in the future, but obviously we're not talking about specific candidates.”

Bob Dole’s former manager says he expects McCain to name his VP on the Friday after the Dem convention. Scott Reed: "It would be a good way to quash Obama's bounce."

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO. Hillary Clinton really loves New York. She said in Syracuse today that the hardest part of campaigning was that she “missed actually physically being in the state and having a chance to see my friends and see a lot of what I care about around the state.”

Gov. Janet Napolitano (D-AZ) said today that she doesn’t think the state needs an amendment to ban gay marriage, but would leave it up to the voters. “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I don't think this constitutional amendment is necessary, so personally I'm going to oppose it,” Napolitano said.

Charlie Crist signed Florida up to join the Powerball lotto. Jeb Bush had taken the state out when he took office. Crist also arranged for the state to pay Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway $224 million for hurricane protection.

ON THE RECORD. Colin Powell was in Providence last night, and said: “I am not interested in political life, and I am not a candidate for any office. … Right now, my only responsibility as a citizen is to vote. What else I might do remains to be seen.”

A source tells Karen Tumulty that Powell won’t make an endorsement in the race until after the conventions.

Powell already donated the maximum to McCain.

VEEP VETTING. In case there were any questions, Joe Biden can legally be on the ballot this November for both re-election to the Senate and election as VPOTUS. Elaine Manlove, commissioner of elections in the First State, says that the question first came up during his presidential campaign, and that the same holds if he is tapped for the number two slot. “It’s not that our law says he can, it’s that it doesn’t say it at all. There’s nothing in Delaware law that says he can’t.” She adds that Biden “would be an outstanding choice.” Also, she says I was the first to ask the question in regards to his possible VP status. No one from Chicago has called just yet.

The National Taxpayers Union looks at Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s (R-MN) record on fiscal matters, and criticizes him for big spending increases and no tax cuts.

BUZZ METER. Buried in the New York Times Limbaugh profiles, the talk show host anoints LA Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) as “his candidate for the Conservative Restoration.” He says he is “fresh, energetic and optimistic in his view of America.”

Walter Shapiro looks at the Biden buzz. "In choosing a vice president, you want somebody who can be on the campaign trail day after day, taking the pressure off the candidate," said David Wilhelm, a former Democratic national chairman, who backed Biden in the primaries and is now an Obama advisor. "You want somebody who can drive the message of the day and can win the vice-presidential debate. One of the things that this campaign showed is that Joe Biden is a good retail politician."

ELECTORAL MATH. Thirty-six percent of FL voters favor McCain picking Crist for VP, 47 percent oppose. And only 14 percent of CT voters would be more likely to vote for McCain if Joe Lieberman is on the ticket, while 32 percent say it’s less likely.

CHATTERING CLASS. Andrew Romano profiles KS Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. “Her popularity and electoral success in a region where Democrats need to do better nicely echoes Obama's pledge to transform the map in the fall, sending a signal that Democrats are serious about competing for Republican votes.” And bonuses include her Ohio roots and Catholic faith. But her SOTU response “bombed,” picking a woman not named Clinton may offend her backers, and some have pointed to the risky imagery of her and Obama together.

Steve Kornacki writes of Wes Clark: “This week’s events, unfair though they may be, will simply exclude from the selection process a man who probably shouldn’t have been included in the first place.” Bob Novak says Clark “talked his way out of what was shaping as a serious chance” to be his VP.

Crist = scum bag
I've said it before, I'll say it again: Obama's price for not picking Hillary is not getting Sebelius. I think he wants her worse than McCain wants Lieberman (and it's pretty obvious that Liebs would be McCain's top choice if all things were equal).

So far, nobody's been as impressive as Joe Biden in auditioning for the Democratic slot. What I have to wonder (and anyone who knows, I'd love to hear what you think) is why McCain wouldn't consider Mike Huckabee. He's got a built-in constituency, doesn't he?
God, Guns and Gays, it looks like the "repubics" are up to their old tricks. Trying to get their favorite wedge issues fired up before the election. And as per usual the democrats are running away as fast as they can. I would so love it if someone in the democratic party could show some guts. Napolitano is not doing anything different than Barak or any of our leaders in both the House and Senate. Hasn't anybody figured out yet why it is that so many people are spending their hard earned money on Obama? We want our party and country back. But I fear that the Democrats are so affraid of their next run for office that htey can't hear what the electorate is screaming at them.
Go ahead, Obama, pick Sebelius; slap HRC in the face. Any HRC voter that decided to move to you will probably be gone again!  Can you afford to lose 18M votes?  And, let's face it, Sebelius doesn't even hold a candle to HRC. Sebelius was BORING in the state of the union response.
Limbaugh profiles, the talk show host anoints LA Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) as “his candidate for the Conservative Restoration.” He says he is “fresh, energetic and optimistic in his view of America.”

**************************************************

Rush is such a phoney baloney. How high up on Limbaugh's short list do you think Jindal would be, as the next leader of the neocons, if Obama, and his darker skinned self were not a threat to the repubs?

If there were no Barack, Rush would have screamed himself into a straight-jacket if Jindal had run against the rest of the repub pack for the Presidency this year.
Mitt Romney and McCain hated each other more than Obama and Clinton. They spewed hatred for each other that Clinton would be jealous of. If their primary had gone on until June they might have actually choked each other to death. Funny the way things turn out with a little time and the realization that your corporate overlords may not have power next year.
Biden is Obama's best choice for VP. He'd trounce whoever is the GOP VP in the VP debate (unlike the last two Democratic VP nominees). He provides experience where Obama is weak. Go Joe!
Obama-Biden 08/12
Go ahead Gov. Romney...but how can you stand with this man that sees Families don't matter?..
If you want to associate your self with a war monger think about your faith...is there a mixed message?
You'll send the wrong message to missionaries all over the world...think about it...
Wasn't G.B.Hinckley worried about the war?
FIRST READ:
Please clarify, in paragraph on Gov. Sebelius, what does this sentence mean --
"...some have pointed to the risky imagery of her and Obama together."

That is too oblique... what are you implying?

If you can't report/state something in a forthright manner, maybe you should reconsider whatever point you are trying to make.
Gen Clark proves over and over that he's not good at politics but the Republican criticism of him is way over blown.  What he said about McCain isn't as bad as some things Republicans have said about McCain.
Biden would be my guy for Obama and I think Romney would be a good pick for McCain.

But, I'm rooting 100% for Obama.
Gov. Michael Dale "Mike"Huckabee would cinch the south but not the Hispanic vote...not Catholic...
Gain one lose another...
Gov. Romney...no southern vote, no religious vote except for the Mormons, Michigan maybe Massachusettes...nope...
Gov. Crist unknown..Florida afraid to get rid of him.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s (R-MN)write up your alley- unknown..over come the WHO? factor...
Joe Lieberman..looks like Ronald McDonald..good choice for McCain's temper...Tragedy/Comedy
Looks like no winner VP for McCain yet...

Obama's best choice: Smokin' Joe Biden!!!!

Romney would be fine with me. Just ahve to beat O'bamboozle in Novemeber. The O'bamatrons are such whiners and blame thier miserable existance on Bush. If Obimbo wins , the only golden lining will be to see the Obamatrons whining 4 years from now because they cant find a good job, gas will be $10 a gallon, terrorism will be rampant, and the ice will still be melting. And it will still be GWBs fault. But at leats France will like us and the hollywood stars can travel abroad without being embarassed for being an American.( gee, how many carbon credits do they have, oh they must be exempt). But themn the O;bamatrons have never been accused of being too smart, after all they want the governmennt to make all of their decisions.
It cracks me up when the chattering class says that romney would help mcsame with evangelicals...they don't think mormons are christians so it is pretty funny thinking they would flock to mccain because of romney...
The v.p. is the "attack dog" part of any campaign. So why is Gen. Clark excluded for attacking the rival camp?
Mitt as VP is a gift that will keep on giving.
Can Obama really pick Kathleen Sebelius for VP? I mean its a slap in the face to Hillary to not pick her (though I doubt he will), but how much more of a rebuke is it to select another woman when that was half her strength as a candidate?
It is a shame that Clark would be politically punished for simply making a statement that is both logical and true.  The McCain experiences in Viet Nam do not make him more suited to be president.  Actually, because of the Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome that obviously plagues him, McCain is less suited to be president, tempermentally.  We do not want a guy with his finger on the nuclear trigger while having delusions about struggling against an enemy from forty years ago.
Hat tip to Thad Cochran. He’s the Mississippi Senator with the safe Republican seat (as opposed to Roger Wicker who has the UNSAFE seat in Mississippi). Back in January, Cochran, who has known John for about 30 years said:

"The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

If this country yet again shoots itself in the foot by electing more of the same McCain or McCain/Romney the flip flopper in chief if he proves to be his running mate then this country deserves the horror that will be delivered.  After ALL the scandals and death perpetrated by these Republicans and their cronies then I give up.  These people are NOT I repeat NOT in the best interest of the majority of this country.  They are the party of the ultra rich that masquerade as the party of morality and religion.  They use religion and the social issues as a ruse.  They do NOT really care about those issues.  They care about money and that's ALL they care about and NOT our money.  They care about people whose interests are NOT the interest of the majority of the people.  If this country yet again elects a near clone of the nincompoop president we have had for eight years then we deserve what we get.  Wake up America.  Elect someone who can REALLY help us.  If McCain/Romney the Flip flopper in chief slide in to the White House on their corrupt primordial ooze then I'm moving to Denmark!
On Lieberman being on the McCain Ticket, CT Voters may not agree in mass but I would think that with the ties Obama has that McCain would draw a much larger Jewish vote than Obama will regardless of the Party affiliation.
McCain picks Romney and he shores up my vote and puts confidence back into my pick.  I'll most likely vote Republican in Nov regardless but I would feel alot better with Romney at #2.

McCain/Romney 08

The so-called 'veteran's perspective' offered is just the usual right-wing jingoism.

"People who don't use the flag as an idol should be imprisoned."
"If you didn't serve in the military, you have no rights as a citizen."
"War is Peace."
"Freedom is Slavery."
"Whatever is not compulsory is verboten."
"Sieg Heil!"
Please tell me how I can get some of that VIP treatment on a mortgage as Obama , Dodd and other top Democrates did...if it is fair for the politicians it should be available to ALL americans.  I think these individules should be forced to pay the difference into a fund to help feed the poor in America
Why isn't Condaleesa Rice being mentioned as a VP candidate for McCain?  I believe she is more qualified than any woman in politics (especially Hillary) and most of the men being mentioned (except Colin Powell.
If Mccain picks Mitt Romney, He will win,
I would like to hear from the canidates on Homeland security and FEMA.  Both are failures and need revision.
It's always the people who don't want the job, who would make the best leaders....that's a good quote from my grandmother after 70 years of observing American politics.  A great example would be Joe Biden, he straight out said he doesn't want the VP slot at all, UNLESS Obama calls him to serve, I think Joe Biden is pretty impressive and could definitely take on any GOPer. Time for change. OBAMA-BIDEN 08!
Republicans seem to be predisposed in selecting the wrong vice presidential running mate. I have no idea who McCain has in mind but my bet is it will be a bad choice. History begs me not to think otherwise.
Natalie from Framingham:

YOU GO GIRL...RIGHT ON THE $$$!!!...BTW, cool "Commentary" page on social issues, etc....how do you do that and get that parchment look?
I recently this year got a 6.05% mortgage because I have a huge money market account with my bank and a long relationship when the available rates offered from other banks was 6.99% based on my credit. Do not be fooled by the politics of the season. Read the WAPO article closer bahadurian. Its time to look for the slightest scandal.

Look an article last week dug McCains werent paying their property tax for four years. Sure they could have conveniently forgotten but then being slothful on personal economics bother me more in someone who we wish to handle the keys to our economy.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/143775.

As a Republican and a Proud Minnesotan, PLEASE, Please, don't pick Pawlenty!!
Some of McCain's republican cronies need to grab some shovels and help him dig his grave.  Hope he picsk ROmney as his V.P., then no question he will lose.

Check out the following story on MCain and that famous temper.  Is this someone we really want in the White House for four years??  We've already had Dopey for 8, can America possibly stand Grumpy for 4 more.

VOTE DEMOCRAT!   -(see aricle below):

McCain denies grabbing foreign official
Posted: 06:32 AM ET

McCain is currently in Colombia.

(CNN) – John McCain says he never acted inappropriately toward a one time associate of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, contradicting a recent claim made by one of the Arizona senator's Republican colleagues.

Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran told his hometown newspaper earlier this week that during a 1987 trip to Central America, he personally witnessed McCain grab an Ortega associate by his shirt collar to lift him out of a chair.

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran told The Sun Herald of Biloxi, Mississippi. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever."

"I don't know what he was telling him, but I thought, 'Good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission.' I don't know what had happened to provoke John, but he obviously got mad at the guy," Cochran added.

Speaking to reporters in Colombia Wednesday, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee flatly denied the report, calling it "simply not true."

"I had many, many meetings with the Sandinistas," McCain said. "I must say, I did not admire the Sandinistas much. But there was never anything of that nature. It just didn't happen."

McCain has long faced criticism for his at-times hot temper, and he has especially clashed with Cochran over a variety of spending projects. The Mississippi Republican endorsed Mitt Romney's presidential bid last year and told the Boston Globe that "The thought of [McCain] being president sends a cold chill down my spine."

"He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me," Cochran told the paper in January.

Romney stated many times that McCain is ''dishonest'', why would he serve with a dishonest person, his eyes would be on presidency.
One person not on this that I think would be an excellent pick for Obama would be Jim Webb. He is a good speaker on military credentials and foreign policy. The Webb choice would also help Obama bring VA into the Democratic fold and would help him get indipendents as he used to be a Republican.
If McCain picks Romney as his running mate he has lost my vote.
I think John McCain needs a truly dynamic choice for VP if he has any chance of winning- Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Eric Cantor as a young and rising Conservative Repuublican star, ditto Governor Jindal. Two Republican white men will not do the trick. He should also consider Republican women Senators.
Mitt Romney impresses me as a mean person, especially towards people of color.  It's just his persona.  He definitely does not appeal to anyone of color.  He is as far right as one can go.  As a person of color, I would be frightened if McCain were to win and Romney was the VP.
Mitt Romney as VP! McCain would get my vote!

Switch a few letters in Mitt's name and you have:

(Mittey Rom-n) Mighty Roman!
The best team would be McCain and Romney.  McCain believes in and understands the importance of our military and our security and he is capable of leading. Romney has moral and economic strength and knowledge.  He would be the best choice to team up with McCain and do all the revamping of the programs and out of control spending that just aren't working.  Security and Economy are the top issues when it comes down to the time to cast the vote -- this is a winning team for The USA!

McCain/Romney '08
McCain could pick OJ Simpson as a running mate and he'd still beat Obama.
Most voters will vote against Obama or Mc cain if
they pick Biden.  Biden is not for this country.
He does everything Israel wants. We want someone that
is for America.

Maxine
I hope that my man Mr.Obama does the right thing and picks either Rev. Jeremy Wright or Mr. Louis Farrakhan as his Vice President.  They are all strong Black men that will finally make right, all of what has been done to our people for centuries.  We need to show this world what can happen with the right leadership!
I'm a dem and I'm tired of the same old tired liberal agenda that hasn't worked in the past being our banner once again.Tax and spend. Do we not know any other way? Same old personal attacks and then crying when we receive the same. Lower taxes do stimulate the economy, it provides profit for the employer, jobs for the people and works to keep companies from outsourceing. If drilling for oil in our protected areas is the answer to lower prices and independence then I'm for it. However,it should be legally mandated for U.S. only. I beleive in a chicken in every pot,a roof over every head,a job for all who want to work, a car in every garage, affordable engery.universal health care and a strong defense. Perhaps, If we spent our overseas aid to countries who hate us here then tose thins might be possible if it were combined with a Congress that actually cared about the country and not party, and were fisically responsible with our money.

This guy from Clearwater, FL... does he say anything other than the same rant practically everyday? Obamatron this... Obamboozle that... Dems crying in 4 years about $10 gas, no jobs, terrorist in the backyard of your home... blah blah blah... oh and I can't forget... and the Dems will still say it's GWB's fault.

Find a new subject or another place to ramble about half-cocked would you please?

It's going to take more than 4 years of an administration to fix the sinkhole that Bush has put us all in so it will be Republicans and Democrats alike crying in 4 years that it's GWB's fault no matter how you cut it.

Please extract GWB from your mouth.

Thanks
Gee, Mrs. Clinton, the rest of us moved out of NY 30 years ago.
I think Mccain and Romney would be a good choice,as long as we can be assurd that the Mormon Curch would not run the country, as they do in Utah.
Condasleesy Rice for VP, you must be kidding, she is responsible for 400.000 Iraqies dead, close to 5000 U.S. troops dead, 30.000 soldiers wounded, most of them loosing limbs,  some don't even know they are living. All this for oil. McCain belongs to the same group that took us to war with Iraq, he is in goose step with Bush and Cheney. If you like this war, then vote for McCain, if you want a end to this madness, and want the ecconomy to improve, vote for the other fellow, and who cares if he is black, get over it, and dont be so narow minded.
I honestly cannot understand why anyone would vote for Obama.  He has next to no political experience and ZERO legislative contributions.  He has initiated not one single bill that would amount to anything.  He speakes in generalities ("change" -- specifically WHAT changes?) and is the most liberal human in the Senate and House.  Compare to McCain, a decorated veteran who withstood 5 years of torture and never repudiated his country, a well-experienced Senator and has a wife who would make an outstanding First Lady.
There is only one sensible choice as Veep
for Obama and his name is Sam Nunn.
