More jobs losses; candidates respond

Posted: Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:20 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
June saw a loss of 62,000 jobs and unemployment held at 5.5%, according to a new government jobs report.

VIDEO: A Race for the White House panel discusses John McCain admitting he's "stronger on national security issues" than on financial ones in an election year when the economy is so important.

The candidates both responded to the situation. (First, it was McCain – about a half-hour after the report came out and then Obama camp):

MCCAIN: "Americans across this country are hurting and today's job numbers are just the latest indication. From rising gas prices to home foreclosures, families are struggling to meet economic challenges that become greater every day. Washington can no longer abdicate its responsibility to act. Our focus must be clear: enact policies to create jobs today.

"To get our economy back on track, we must enact a jobs-first economic plan that supports job creation, provide immediate tax relief for families, enact a plan to help those facing foreclosure, lower health care costs, invest in innovation, move toward strategic energy independence and open more foreign markets to our goods.

"The American people cannot afford an economic agenda that will take our country in the wrong direction and cost jobs. At a time when our small businesses need support from Washington, we cannot raise taxes, increase regulation and isolate ourselves from foreign markets. These are the same old siren songs that have failed the American people time and time again."

OBAMA: “As we head into the 4th of July weekend, today's report that our economy has lost another 62,000 jobs is a stark reminder that far too many Americans will spend this holiday out of work and struggling to provide for their families because of the failed policies of the last eight years.

“Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months, while workers' wages fail to keep pace with the skyrocketing cost of gas, groceries and healthcare.  The American people are paying the price for the failed economic policies of the past eight years, and we can't afford four more years of more of the same.  That is the essential issue of this campaign because Senator McCain has fully embraced the Bush economic agenda.  I believe it has to change.

“But, as these numbers demonstrate, the American people can't wait another six months.  We need action now. That's why I'm calling on Congress and the President to enact real, immediate relief with energy rebates for working families this summer, a fund to help families avoid foreclosure, extended benefits for the long-term jobless, and assistance to states that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn.

“As President, I'll move us in a new direction with policies to restore broad-based, bottom up growth that benefits all Americans. I will provide working families with a middle-class tax cut; fight for affordable health care and college tuition; work to help raise workers' wages, and invest in infrastructure, education and a clean energy future to create millions of new jobs. That's the change the American people need.”

What does McSame know about this. His wife charges $750,000 on her credit card a month.  He is so out of touch with the pain of average Americans.

No, he just cares about being a free trader.  Well free traders have only been free for the corporate interest, not for the working class of the USA.  Let's go with free and FAIR trade and bring some jobs back home.

Obama 08-12
Obama got it right --on-point again...What Americans of all colors and economic stations need and wanted yesterday and are perfectly willing to lend a hand to achieve with govertment is real progressive forward thinking leadership at home and in our foregin policy.

Leadership!

Obama President 2009
See the difference people in Barack Obama and John McCain statements.

John McCain is talking as if this economic crisis we are facing has just started.

He's still in denial - and way out of touch with the realities of the American people. He's stuck on stupid - talking about raising taxes.

It's not the taxes that are causing hardship - it's the gas prices which are much more costly than any tax claim.

John McCain doesn't understand - the economy is being drained and people are losing jobs - because they can't afford the gas prices and all the other higher cost because of it.

Taxes--the GOP uses that word as much as they use the word "terrorism".  They think it will scare people.

NO John McCain and your GOP cronies scare people for the last 8 years - the GOP has spent more of our tax dollars than any others of our time.

SO - thanks Barack Obama for given us something we can really rely on and trust.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
"The American people cannot afford an economic agenda that will take our country in the wrong direction and cost jobs."

McCain says this while in Columbia.  He's down there selling out MORE American jobs!  Go figure!
Is McBush serious, are we not loosing jobs at an alarming rate under the failing policies of his twin?  And he thinks we want four more years of this mess.  When will enough be enough?  When everbody that don't have a credit limit of 500,000 on their credit cards are out of work.
When McCain misspeaks, he treads close to the 'senility' line. Even Fox referred to a recent McCain gaffe as a "senior moment".

We've already had one President with Alzheimer's, we neither deserve nor need a another one -- especially one who hasn't been exhibiting any hesitation about provoking another war, this time against Iran.

I consider McCain's time as a POW to be scary with regards to his temperament. I mean, seriously, if a 'regular' soldier gets PTSD, what kind of psychological damage is done after a soldier is shot down and tortured?

This was actually the basis of a book and a movie -- the "Manchurian Candidate" -- the plot of which revolves around a POW being tortured by the Chinese, turned into a political assassin via brainwashing and then released back to the US.

That, and the fact that he's another product of nepotism, just like Bush43 disqualifies him from being President in my humble opinion.
Seriously,

I don't think McSame is mentally and/or physically able to take on the HUGE responsibility of leading this country.  This man has some serious physical issues that need to be addressed, and the American people need to be aware of them since there's a minute chance that he could be the president of the US!  The future of our country could seriously be at stake.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
McCain:"Americans are hurting so it's important to do more of what Republicans have been doing for the past 28 year to get us into this mess to begin with."
Good luck with that- Congress is off saving the polar bears and salamanders- no time for human related issues- Drill for oil that will provide many jobs- Build the derricks, Lay the Pipe, Build the refiners Run the refiners- You could truck oil while we are waiting- come on real people can come up with real ideas- why can't you guys-
For a second, I thought McCain was going to end up saying "and therefore I endorse senator Obama for President."  Then he came up with the same old tired statements which only lead to a continuation of policies that got us to where we are in the first place.
We need to have policies and laws that support various industrial jobs.  We need to have retail stores that support companies that build things here in the US.  Wal-Mart seems to force companies to sell at whatever price that Wal-Mart wants making many companies go overseas for cheaper labor.

Another thing that could help is finding ways to lower the cost for people to go into the medical field.  We need more doctors, nurses and their medical support staff.  That could be one way to reduce medical cost.
Obama's getting better at speaking more directly.

"...real, immediate relief with energy rebates for working families..."

If he keeps talking that way, he will drown out McCain's 1990 playbook.
"because of the failed policies of the last eight years."

But But but Obama your party has been in control of both houses of congress the last year and half. (notice how I didn't lie by stretching 7-1/2 years to 8?)

“Our economy has now shed 438,000 jobs over the past six months"

see above
THE JOB'S ARE MOVING SOUTH OF THE BORDER.
IF THE CANDIDATES CAN'T SEE THAT N.A.F.T.A.AGRREMENT
WILL RUIN ALL MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA AND MAKE THE RICH
EVEN RICHER!!
HOW MUCH MONEY DO THESE PEOPLE NEED?
SINCE I CAST MY FIRST BALLOT IN 1968,IT HAS BEEN A CONTINIOUS WONDER TO ME,THAT IN EVERY ELECTION THE AMERICAN VOTERS GOT THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE THIS COUNTRY DESERVES!
PERHAPS THIS IS WHY THE GREAT MYTH OF A STRONG MIDDLE CLASS HAS BEEN PERPETRATED ON AMERICAN SOCIETY, AND HOW THE ARISTOS ALWAYS SUCKER THE GREAT UNWASHED!
Obama has just scored a big point. If tax cut for the wealthy was to help creat more jobs, why didn't the eight years of tax cut do that?
Who are the republicans trying to fool? They have given businesses full reign, and look at where we are today. When they talked about trickle down economics, I thought the more a business made we at the bottom would see better paying jobs, medical, etc. They haven't bothered to look out for the middle class and poor, and they want us to trust them again. If nothing else I think I learn from my mistakes, even if they don't. All McCain talks about is small business, less taxes (for the wealthy). I haven't seen that benefiting me. Wake up America!
The problem with McCain plans is that it is the same as the past 8 years that has brought us here. Combined with his admission regarding his economic savvy or lack of and recent FEC filings showing poor personal money management habits or understanding:

The McCains werent paying their property tax for four years. Sure they could have conveniently forgotten but then being slothful on personal economics bother me more in someone who we wish to handle the keys to our economy.

Despite being worth several millions, they also left themselves thousands in credit card debt. Every mony manager knows cc debt interest is nearly triple investment interests so this is seriously weak money management

I have said it here before on this post and I will say it again.  We have only begun to see the devastation of the republicans on this economy.  Yes, we will see depression era devastation!  The single cause? Gas prices.  The congress must move now -today- to stop the most severe economic disaster of this century.
The republicans have brought this on all of us.
Why would anyone put another republican in office, especialy one that truly doesn't know what is going on and one who doesn't care what's going on?  McCain is an elitist with arrogant contempt for others.
And now McCain has Bush opperatives running his campaign?  McCain = Bush.  NO MORE republicans in office!

I trust Obama to have the wisdom and judgment to turn this economy around in a positive direction.
John McCain is a panderer with no interest in the greater good.  (I am not sure he even understands the issues well enough to be a Senator, not to mention understanding them well enough to be President.)
Look at the people with whom he has surrounded himself (Phil Gramm, Charlie Black, Steve Schmidt).  These are the same people who surrounded and advised George Bush. They are also the same people responsible for deregulating banking which in turn has led to the current mortgage meltdown.)  Why would Americans trust McCain to be any different from George Bush when he has the same army of lobbyists surrounding and advising him as did George Bush?  Does anybody believe they have a different agenda?  They still seek to satisfy their neoconservative agenda (taking us to war for oil under the guise of spreading Democracy and American security).  But their real motive is to  increase their vast personal fortunes and they don't care what happens to you and me as average Americans.  Don't give America up to McCain and his big money lobbyists.  They fooled us twice.  Don't let them to it again!
Supply side economics...
Trickle down economics...
Did not work for Regan, Bush I or Bush II.
Closer to Fascism, Plutocracy...
Trickle up economics!
Can't argue with the numbers. This is the real reason conservatives hate Bill Clinton- his numbers for economics are well above anything a republican has achieved!
GOP- means, big government, big military/police state
less oversight which leads to  S @ L,  mortgage and loan scandals, war and corporate profiteering, privatization and financial destruction of your social security, and no health care!
Thus creating class warfare the destruction of the middle class!
They should be throw in jail not the White house!
Better wake up!
Can't believe MCSHAME says we can't have an economic agenda that will take us in the wrong direction and eliminate jobs.......where has he been the last eight years (in Vietnam)?  And as far as raising taxes, he means we can't take away the tax cuts to the rich or corporate America.
He is the SAME OLD SIREN SONG!!!
OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Nancy G,

While you may be correct in theory, your mesage is off. The Trade deals, without employment/wage standards are why so many good paying American jobs are being shipped overseas.

And, What exactly is McCain doing?
Please MSNBC post my blog....

I am amazed at how many democrats are complaining about the economy when the cable news stations have reported that Congress (controlled by the democrats since 2006) went "home" to celebrate the 4th.  It seems they just don't care about the people.  They promised if they were elected that "things would get done".  Yet it seems that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have no agenda to help the American people out.

If it wasn't for the Bush Economic Stimulus Package going out, I couldn't have pre-paid some of my oil for the upcoming winter.

Obama hasn't said much of anything.  It will be interesting to see if he debates Sen. McCain.  I want and demand to know what these gentlemen plan on doing.  At least I knew where Hillary stood.  I hope that she will be VP.

Laura, Boston
"The President has nothing to do with the economy.
I am not endorsing any candidate, I am telling you the truth."

Horse-hockey.
In McCain's 3rd paragraph references we can't the country in the wrong direction.  WHAT PLANET IS HE LIVING ON - we are already WAY down the wrong direction.  The only way to change things is bring in someone like Barack....
"The last eight years have seen some of the lowest unemployment rates our country has ever seen."

Speak for yourself. I was laid off three times.
Ummm..  I noticed Obama said extended benefits for the jobless...  with a middle-class tax cut how is he going to pay for that and all the other dandy little carrots he's stringing out there?
And all these people claiming we can end the war and save all this money.. Obama wants to shift our troops from Iraq to Afghanistan-- not bring them home so there will be no money saved.  And how is Obama's claim of raising minimum wage going to help the jobless?   And how is affordable college tuition going to help out someone in their mid-life with a family/home now?  We need someone who can stay on point of the question he's asked -- not spout off on all this campaign propaganda.  I look at Obama's ''ideals'' and see more government spending but all these tax rebates...  what a pipe dreamer!

At least McCain stayed on point and spoke of creating a jobs-first economy.  I'd rather have the government create jobs (and tax the employees) than have more people not working and collecting extended benefits.
"I read that some guy in Ohio tweaked his '87 Mustang to get 110 MPG.  There's your flippin economic solution people... wake up!!!"

I wonder what Snopes says about that.
