First thoughts: Who's not out of touch?

*** Who’s not out of touch? Today begins another week with both McCain and Obama discussing the economy. Obama starts the day with an economic event from Charlotte, NC, while McCain holds his economic town hall from Denver. Here is what McCain will say, per advanced excerpts: "All of us know what is happening to the economy. It is slowing. More than 400,000 people have lost their jobs since December, and the rate of new job creation has fallen sharply.” Hang on there a sec -- "slowing?" On a day when McCain is trying to suggest that he’s NOT out of touch on the economy, that line might not do the trick. The economy isn't just slowing; it's already there. Why is it that politicians are so afraid to just describe the state of things as voters see them, rather than as how they wish voters would see them? Of course, as we saw during the primaries, Obama has his own challenges when it comes to connecting with working-class voters. We’ll say this again: The candidate who best connects on the economy will win this presidential election -- no ifs, ands, or buts. Also, per Politico’s Allen, McCain will call for balancing the budget by the end of his first term and will talk about fixing Social Security. Why does McCain want to start his economic week off by sparking a debate on Social Security, by talking about things the government might take away from people in some way (raising the age etc.) rather than talking about how he'll put money in people's pockets? However, McCain will win editorial plaudits for wanting to talk about tough things like Social Security; the question is whether the country wants to have tough conversations about the economy right now.

VIDEO: TODAY's Matt Lauer talks with NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd about the latest presidential campaign news, including the candidates' views on Iraq, energy and the economy.

*** Does prevent defense ever work? The New York Times’ Frank Rich has been a pretty big Obama fan throughout this cycle, but on Sunday he delivered what might be the most succinct way of hitting Obama from the left that we’ve seen: “For all the hyperventilation on the left about Mr. Obama's rush to the center — some warranted, some not — what's more alarming is how small-bore and defensive his campaign has become… [H]e is drifting away from the leadership he promised and into the focus-group-tested calculation patented by Mark Penn in his disastrous campaign for Hillary Clinton.” Is Obama playing prevent defense? Sometimes, that seems to be the case. And on all days, another Obama backer -- the New York Times editorial page -- devoted an editorial on July 4th to just hammer Obama. "We are not shocked when a candidate moves to the center for the general election. But Mr. Obama's shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics, the man of passionate convictions who did not play old political games. There are still vital differences between Mr. Obama and Senator John McCain on issues like the war in Iraq, taxes, health care and Supreme Court nominations. We don't want any ‘redefining’ on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in." It's one thing to move to the center, but it's the clinical way in which Obama has done it that's making the cynical press start to get over its Obama love affair. Clinical leads to cynical… Just ask the Clintons.

*** Here come the ads: Over the weekend, the RNC -- through its independent expenditure arm -- began airing the first contrast TV ad of the general election. “Record gas prices, a climate in crisis. John McCain says solve it now,” the ad goes. “With a balanced plan -- alternative energy, conservation, suspending the gas tax, AND more production here at home -- he’s pushing his own party to face climate change. But Barack Obama? For conservation, but he just says no to lower gas taxes. No to nuclear. No to more production. No new solutions. Barack Obama: Just the party line.” The ad is running in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. It’s interesting that it ISN’T running in battlegrounds like Iowa and Minnesota. Is the GOP already writing off those states, or are they waiting to see if the needle moves in Wisconsin? If it does, look for Iowa and Minnesota to be added in. If it doesn't, then look for a doubling down in those Rust Belt states, which are turning into McCain's best chances at blue pick-ups, especially Michigan.

*** Shades of summer 2007? Management-wise, is everything finally starting to come together for McCain? There was the announcement last week of the staff realignment. There are now these RNC ads hitting Obama. And it appears that evangelical leaders are ready to work against the Illinois senator. (They may not be FOR McCain, but they are ready to be against Obama, which is all the McCain can ask for at this point.) All of this seems to signal a re-launch for the McCain campaign. And it’s also a bit of deja vu of the summer of 2007 -- McCain doesn't have a chance, his campaign's imploding, he wasted all this time (money in 2007), but then he pulls a rabbit out of a hat and wins the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries. The difference is that this is the general election. He can't really play small ball, go state to state, and hope for key wins and momentum. There is no momentum; there's one day where everyone votes. So he needs to work with the momentum moments that he'll have, including the VP pick, his convention, and the fall debates.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd discusses today's political headlines, including Barack Obama planning to accept his party's nomination at a football stadium.

*** Let’s take it outdoors! It has been widely speculated, but First Read has learned that the Democrats will announce today that they will move the last night of the convention -- when Obama becomes the nominee -- from the 17,000-seat Pepsi Center to the 70,000+-seat Invesco Field, where the Denver Broncos play their football games. We guess this doesn’t seem surprising for a candidate who drew some 70,000 to 80,000 in Portland. Then again, what if it rains or even snows (it’s Denver, after all)? And just how does McCain respond? Mark Salter, speaking to the New York Times, seems to give a clue. “‘John doesn't ever want to be something that he is not,’ Mr. Salter said, including trying to pass himself off as a larger-than-life figure on stage. ‘There's nothing in there about him that wants to be rarefied.’” So is it possible we see a really low key GOP convention in a way that emphasizes the serious over the rock star? It's the obvious way to go, and if Obama goes too rock star (as he's doing with the football stadium rally), it just may work.

*** On the trail: McCain is in Denver, where he holds a town hall on the economy. Obama, in Charlotte, NC, also gives a talk on the economy and later hits two fundraisers in Atlanta. By the way, the details of Obama's overseas trip are leaking out via foreign press reports. It appears he'll be in Israel the 22nd or 23rd per an Israeli media report, and he apparently might speak at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin per Der Spiegel

This is too funny. Obama has turned into Hillary.
The economy is major concern to most Americans.    400,000 people have lost their jobs in 7 months.  That is staggering!

Indeed.  If you ask me, the economy has come to a screeching halt and I fear the 'beep-beep-beep' of a reversal soon.

Listen to Barack Obama speak in a huge stadium? Sure. Have him run the country? Not a chance.
McCain's new ad:

He says he can 'solve it'.  Really?  Don't you first have to admit that there's a problem?  How on earth do you think you can continue to spend 12Billion/month in Iraq, continue to lower corporate taxes and make them permanent and balance anything?  Obviously, Cindy manages the checkbook in his family.  He is so out of touch, we need new words for "out of touch".
You think it may snow in August?  Interesting.
Having a a rock star be in change of the country would be okay. I think someone like Madonna or Justin Timberlake would do just as good as a job as Obama would do.
“‘John doesn't ever want to be something that he is not,’ Mr. Salter said

You mean popular and electable?  He doesn't want to be those things?
who is more out of touch?  The liberals of course.  Obama wants to destroy more jobs, keep gas prices high and could care less whether our country is safe or not.

Obama must be paying for the football field.  The DNC can't even afford big macs at the convention.

Why don't the DNC follow Obama's lead?
Make every delegate to the convention pay a $5000 tax to attend the convention.....
John doesn't ever want to be something that he is not,’ Mr. Salter said, including trying to pass himself off as a larger-than-life figure on stage. ‘There's nothing in there about him that wants to be rarefied.’” So is it possible we see a really low key GOP convention in a way that emphasizes the serious over the rock star? The truth is HE ( McCain)CAN'T DO IT....

Too rock star...so allowing as many people who supported him come is a bad thing. why shouldn't they be able too.  trying  to spin it to "McCain can't speak so anyone wants to listen" advantage.
What are you guys talking about? The economy is slowing, but is still growing. Facts are facts, and those are the facts.
I watched Chuck Todd on the morning Joe.  Just makes me miss Mr. Russert even more.  First Chucky sidetracked on the question if the media miscontrued Obama's "refine" remarks.  Chucky tried to blame Obama as been clinical, cynical and now a Clinton.  I call it being shrewd.  Many Americans will not start paying attention to the campaign until the convention.  We know the RNC is going to attack Obama's patroitism, ethnic backrgound, faith, etc.. This is the time for the canididates to re introduce themselves to a wider public before the onslaught of smears begins in earnest.

Obama doesn't love the media and the media can't get over their unrequited love so they stick with McCain.  Chucky reminded us all how stupid and out of touch the inside beltway pundit are.  Chucky even suggestion that people were reading the NYT this weekend on the beach.

Most of Americans have given up on traditional media, because of your pack dog mentality who obesses or the mundane because if you didn't, you would be required to mingle among the masses.  And we all know that since you have earned so sort of celebrity you don't want to get off your butts and doing real journalism and now you think you are too special to mingle among us.
What happened to Obama?

I was as ardent an Obama supporter as there was. He'll get my vote, but he won't get my money or volunteer time. I'm entirely disappointed in his FISA position.

I'm sick of politicians fudging the truth. This country won't change until one of them gets that and has the strength and courage to stand up for what is right.
70K people, in an outdoor arena for the last night of the convention, seems a little much.

Let's all try to remember we are electing a president now welcoming the second coming...

How are all the Obama fans feeling now that he has swiftly moved away from so many of his earlier stances??
McCain vs. McCain. A walking contradiction to himself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEtZlR3zp4c&feature=related

Priceless, I can't believe McCain thinks he has any ground to stand by pointing out an Obama position shift, however nuanced.

Dear American Voters, reporters, media. professionals, political parties, and our hon. Presidential Nominees,

Subject: Presidential Temperament

Please talk about and "Compare And Contrast" the " Presidential Temperament" of our Presidential presumptive nominees. I will also request and plead to the nominees themselves [ Hon. Senator McCain and Obama ].
Our nation has been applying this yard and stick tor the appointments and confirmation process of our Supreme Court Justices nominees.
Our Greatgrand Nation Foundations are as under:
Family, friends, fellows, faith, funds, fun, with fairness & freedom And without fear, favor, and failure.
It will be disgrace and shameful if the nominees and media will not look into this critical and crucial aspect under current challenging times and circumstances within our country and all around the Globe.

America wake up and the discuss the " Presidential Temperament" of our presumptive presidential nominee's [ Hon. Senator McCain and Obama].

Yours sincerely,
COL. A.M.Khajawall [Ret].

PS: Critical issues are being in touch with your temper and cognativeness.
While visiting a number of revolutionary sites in the Boston area over the 4th of July, I was able to speak with a number of tourists. I was impressed with their openness towards Senator Obama. I sense a real feeling of hope from people in this country as they watch and listen to him become more presidential each day.

The people I have talked with get the sense that Senator Obama is listening to them - especially the 25/30 year olds who have peers fighting in Iraq. That is why they are working so hard to see him win the election.

They could never understand how the  2004 election ended up being about the Vietnam War, a war which ended over 30 years ago.

This generation deserves better. This election should be about judgment as we go forward.

And if parts of the Democratic Party come down on Senator Obama too hard, it is only because we expect so much from him.  This country and the world have been waiting a long long time for someone like him.

No matter how many times I take a walk down the street from my home to visit both John Adams’ house and the site where John Hancock was born, I can’t help but be completely blown away each and every time I leave. The standard they set were so high for future politicians. These were people who could have been hung for treason. But I guess when the future of your country is at stake, no standard is too high.

And despite what people may think, Adams and Jefferson died not that long ago on the 4th of July in 1826 - Abraham Lincoln was already a teenager.

Obama/Webb - 2008
over the weekend I read what both candidates had to say about patriotism, one talked about putting country first but never explained what that meant to him, the other talked in detail about growing up on the poor side and having a disadvantage of being bi-racial BUT using the American way to overcome obstacles and become a driving force in success in the American way of never giving up and of helping those less fortunate and HOW  to solve problems by working together rather than dividing along racial, religious and economic lines.
This one is for Chuck Todd. I saw you today on Morning Joe! It appears as though you are in the tank for McCain. You were SO critical of Obama and you did not call McCain out on all of his flip-flops from tax cuts to Iraq. You praised the RNC's new ads which highlight McCain's economic policy which is more of Bush. Why aren't you calling McCain out on how much he is more the same of Bush? I heard that your wife use to work for McCain is that why you are so biased toward him and against Obama? I expect more from you Chuck, please be fair!
McCain will forever be playing catch-up on the economy unless he really makes a solid effort to understand the dire situation and do his own "connecting" with working class voters. He continues to dance around the major issue of this election with sniping at Obama over oil drilling. That won't cut it.

How anyone can take McSame seriously on the economy is beyond belief. He wants to continue the same economic policies that got us into this recession in the first place: tax cuts for the rich, oil company subsidies, and the perpetual continuation of the Iraq war.

If McSame is elected, this country will be in a depression within 6 months; and more vulnerable to terrorists by his disastrous Iraq policy. He must not be elected.
Wow, it's good to see after the break even First Read is ready to prop McCain up.

No mention at the absurdity of McCain's "balanced budget" proposal.  Pushing the McCain "comeback" meme.  And lost of quotes from the RNC, McCain, and others going after Obama.

Must have been one hell of a 4th of July BBQ in Arizona...
The only people who see a change in Obama's position on Iraq are those people who weren't paying attention to begin with. Obama has ALWAYS had the same position on this issue - his recent comments in no way contradict what he's said before. He has always added the admonition:

"BUT, we have to be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in"

He has said this literally over a hundred times. What did you morons think that meant? I'll tell you - it means that the primary goal is 1-2 brigades per month. But we have to be careful in how we withdraw, and if something should happen that puts our troops or innocent Iraqi's in danger, then OF COURSE we will modify our withdrawal process accordingly. It would be reckless NOT to incorporate facts on the ground into the equation. That is not a flip-flop, nor is it a change in position. Anyone who thinks so is either a moron or is trying to manufacture a controversy where there is none.
" McCain will call for balancing the budget by the end of his first term and will talk about fixing Social Security. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
How do we spend 12 billion dollars a month in Iraq AND balance the budget? Am I missing something? Will anyone in the media EVER ask John McCain this question?

******************

"It's one thing to move to the center, but it's the clinical way in which Obama has done it that's making the cynical press start to get over its Obama love affair. "

What Obama love affair? You mean the Reverend Wright, bitter, muslim, flag pin, white working class, exotic, naive, inexperienced talk was all out of LOVE? lol

God help Senator Obama. Please.

P.S. Senator Obama has always advocated a centrist approach to governing. All attempts to spend this as a "move to the center" are laughable.

**********************************

"So is it possible we see a really low key GOP convention in a way that emphasizes the serious over the rock star? It's the obvious way to go, and if Obama goes too rock star (as he's doing with the football stadium rally), it just may work.  "

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This entire sentence is just ridiculous. Just because something is different than what you are used to doesn't mean you have to criticize it, although I am sure the McCain campaign appreciates your efforts to pre-spin it all for them. You guys are the greatest. :(

Neither of these candidates are out of touch. They both see what the economy is like. When Obama or McCain fill up their gas tanks they know what the price is. Do you think that Cindy or Michele doesn't notice the price of groceries when they shop.
"who is more out of touch?  The liberals of course.  Obama wants to destroy more jobs, keep gas prices high and could care less whether our country is safe or not."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

These kinds of statements reveal your lack of intelligence. I mean, seriously, who actually thinks that ANY politician WANTS to destroy job or keep gas prices high???? Every single politician in Washington that I can think of - even those who I can't stand and never agree with - wants more jobs and lower gas prices. And they ALL care about the safety of this country. They simply disagree on the best way to get there. But you would have to be a complete retard to actually believe that ANY politician wants to "destroy jobs" and keep gas prices high.
Moving to the center to define yourself as a moderate is SMART. Clarifing, refining positions is not flip-floping. It's time that Scarbrough and Buchannan stop playing the Rebublican narrative of calling Obama a flip-floper when he isn't. Acting like real analysts is far better than political hacks.
Out of touch...is not the issue....

Who will put together the best future for America.
Who will show they are United to help all Americans.
Who will have the best judgment moving forward on all the issues and be a part of a team with truth with all Americans...

Adam,

No group can ever get all of what they want in America. The system is not set up that way. Compromise is inevitible and should be ENCOURAGED.

Senator Obama has to balance the needs of ALL Americans, and that will require compromise from everyone. No group in American can GOVERN with a "my way or the highway mentality." You can WIN elections that way, but that is not the same as GOVERNING.

Give Senator Obama the chance to build a new coalition that puts the people's interests first.  That is MUCH BETTER than what we have today. That is the real "change" that Obama represents - not everyone having their way, but everyone having a voice.
McFossil is out of touch simply with the age factor! What young person can relate to a 72 year old these days? Give me a break. He's the BEST the Repubs have to offer? That's pretty darn scary, isn't it? Young people will swarm around Obama with his message of hope and change. McFossil doesn't have a chance.
that's why Mccain will lose: his staff is incompetent and his strategy only underlines that he's a rich old guy totaly out of touch with workig families.
Barack, on the other hand, has good people, but he needs to hit McCain HARD on the economy, NOT start drifting towards the middle.  I perceieve that, as I'm sure many of his supporters do, as his already succuminb to the urge to be just another politiician, instead of a change agent.  He needs to stop drifting, stick with the views and promises that excited so many, and slam McBush on the economy.
Countdown is the only MSNBC program I watch these days.

Other programs are falling over themselve as to who can best bash Obama and give McBush a pass.
Senators Obama and McCain spent the primary season convincing their party bases that they had the requisite liberal/conservative values.  Now, as they both try and seize the center, how do we figure out exactly where the candidates stand?
Linda, Boston, MA - He has said this literally over a hundred times. What did you morons think that meant?

Another eloquent statement from a Barack Obama supporters.
mcsames economic solutions sound a lot like the ones that put the economy in the toilet in the first place...wars he won't pay for...more tax cuts for the wealthy...bombs away for the defense industry...shortchange social programs but reward loser industries with tax credits and favorable treatment in congress...
I have spent almost 10 years as a legal resident of USA.  I'm not really surprised to see Obama's comments get far more scrutinized than McCain's, even when their statements carry the same weight.

My professional experience so far in USA has tought me to know that whenever you see an individual who does not 'fit the mold' in a position, that person is twice better than a counterpart who 'fits the mold'.
The Only ones out of touch are the MSM. They thrive on the Ignorant voter taking what they write at face value. This is Not the Year in which the MSM can control the Message to the Masses. I'd suggest that you get off your Hiney's & try to report the News, instead of trying to Make the News to suit your Big ego's.

Jerry, jerry, jerry, you can write all you want about the Democrats being responsible for the mess we find ourselves in, but Any voter with an iota of a Brain, knows that the Gay Ole Party will be going down in Flames for the way they've screwed America & the World with thier grand plan of nation building(or whatever you choose to call nowadays. Keep believing in Karl Rove's Stupidy in thinking of Republican dominance in American Politic's.

Barack Obama for POTUS !!!
What they didn't mention which is telling is that the new McCain ad was also running in ARIZONA this weekend.  McCain is in trouble if he has to run ads in Arizona.
It's a sad day for all Americans if we elect a person that has no real economic skills...that has to rely on someone elses knowledge..has someone to fire later if it goes wrong...WOW I think I just
fore told the past not the future...
Fool us once shame on you...
Fool us twice shame on us....
Fool us three times shame on that other guy...we have to have some one to blame it on!
Wow.

McBush must really be in trouble.  The GOP and the MSM understand that McBush doesn't have a chance so they are trying to manufacture stories and controversy to keep it interesting.

The MSM know that the less drama and controversy, the less money in their pockets, so of course they are willing to hold hands with the GOP and believe everything that comes out of their mouths, true or false.

Russert is probably rolling in his grave at Chucky T's behavior.

I think he expected more from you Chucky T.   Guess your just like the rest.  Anything for that big fake story.

Guess I'll be sticking to C-Span from now on.

soo sad.
McCain's ad lacks an important element "How" to solve the problems.  Everyone already knows it needs to change and he says nothing about How to change.  I detest him more and more.

Senator Obama has plan in this campaign and is implementing that plan, day by day.  Everyone else can panic and get dramatic, I'm not.  Senator Obama has the best judgement and Vision for this country.
McCain said that Iraq was the "center of terror" and we need to "win".  I guess his experience didn't prepare him for Afganistan!  Some experience, with more American deaths there this past month.
Senator Obama has the good judgement and the Vision to take this country into a positve direction for the betterment of all its people.

Has the republican agenda made us a more prosperous and safe nation?  NO!  Is America a drug addict? Voting for the same repeated party that continues to bring it down and expecting positive changes?  That is insanity! Stop the insanity!

Obama has never shifted on Iraq. I cannot understand why the MSM and the republicans are distorting his words. That said, I agree with Frank Rich, Obama has took a cynical approach to the center. But i also like the swipe Rich, took at McCain.  I'm hoping that he doesn't pivot anymore for the sake of his campaign and democrats re-taking the white house again.
70,000 folks at a stadium for Obama's acceptance speech and VP nomination?  Sounds like inviting a whole lot of ordinary Americans into the process . . . you're right, why on earth would McCain want that???  By the people, for the people . . . what a concept!
Interesting you brought up the article by Frank Rich; I read it and agreed with him.  There have been several things recent weeks I've felt could have been handled a LOT better and mostly because the campaign does seem very defensive and like they've lost their mojo.  Hopefully, they can get their groove back in the lull of summer.

That said, I don't think Obama is really shifting like people are saying.  I remember in January when some of my coworkers were saying he hung the moon.  I went and read his position papers and didn't see what the big deal was -- a lot of it is centrist and pragmatic stuff that has been around for a very long time -- it wasn't so new and different to me.  The main difference I saw with him with Obama was charisma and his understanding of how to rally the troops and fundraise with the internet.

Perhaps people didn't bother to really understand what Obama believed and just bought into the image.  If that is the case, they need to re-read his position papers.  The centrist leanings are quite evident in his position papers, at least to me.  And anyone who reaches across the aisle has a pragmatic side that involves compromise.  You can't reach across the aisle AND be dogmatic about no compromises.  It just doesn't work.
At a religiuos convention which I attended years ago, the main address was scheduled to be given outside. It rained. The speaker, however, standing under a canopy on stage was protected from getting wet.

He was not happy about his audience having to endure the uncomfortable conditons, while he remained nice, and dry. He had the podium moved out into the rain with us. I was glorious. It was a demonstration of no 'big I-s, and little you-s'!. It was a testament that leaders, as well as, followers are put to trial over their profession of faith.

If it rains or snows in Denver, so be it. It could be turned into a powerful photo op for the dems.
How is McCain going to balance the budget? Its simply not possible, given his predisposition to continuing the Iraq occupation, unless he plans to default of nondiscretionary spending (entitlements).

There is less than a trillion, I believe, in discretionary spending, and the lion share of that is defense spending. Does McCain plan to gut the military at a time when its ramping up in numbers and equipment to meet its continuing accelerated deployment schedule? And if he doesn't plan to gut the military, balancing the budget isn't possible.
