Obama talks economy, Iraq

Posted: Monday, July 07, 2008 5:05 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Obama turned his focus back to the economy today, the No. 1 issue on voters minds, slamming McCain for what he characterized as a “trickle down” approach to economic policy that would not help average Americans.

He also spoke about the decision to give his convention speech at Denver's Invesco Field and said comments by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki suggested the leader shared his view about how to approach the matter of withdrawing troops from Iraq and asked that McCain and the administration listen to Maliki.

After a week of talking about issues from patriotism to faith-based initiatives, but very little about the economy or his rival for the presidency, Obama turned up the heat again Monday as he sought to highlight the differences between himself and McCain.

The Illinois senator summed up his plans for how to help struggling families, including through a middle class tax cut and the $50 billion second stimulus package he has urged Congress to pass among other already announced proposals.

And he answered the criticisms from McCain and his rivals today and recently, who have accused him of wanting to raise taxes, even on lower income people.

“If Sen. McCain wants a debate about taxes in this campaign, then it is a debate I’m happy to have.  Because if you’re a family making less than $250,000, my plan will not raise your taxes -- not your income tax, not your payroll taxes, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes," Obama told reporters at a hastily arranged press conference at the Drury Inn after his flight to Charlotte, NC was diverted here for mechanical reasons. "In fact, what Senator McCain’s gonna need to explain is why his tax cut for the middle class would leave out 101 million households, and why, the families who are lucky enough to get a tax cut under his plan, it would be worth only about $125 in the first year. The difference is -- he trusts that prosperity will trickle down from corporations and the wealthiest few to everyone else. I believe that it’s the hard work of the middle-class American family that fuels this nation’s prosperity."

During the roughly half hour presser, Obama also talked about the Beijing Olympics opening ceremonies and scoffed at the new ad by McCain’s “surrogates” touting the Arizona senator's energy plan, arguing his energy policy was in line with failed George Bush policies.

On Iraq: Obama was asked whether he felt the Iraqi prime minister's statement that his country wanted some type of timetable for US troops to withdraw that was conditioned on the ability of the Iraqi security forces to step up would limit how long American troops would remain there.

"I think that Prime Minister Maliki’s statement is consistent with my view about how withdrawals should proceed and how a status of forces agreement should not be structured without congressional input and should not be rushed," he said. "The concern that I’ve had has been that this administration negotiates with the Iraqis, signs something up that binds future administrations that isn’t going before Congress and that does not have a clear pathway for US troops to get out of Iraq. I think it’s encouraging, partly because of the extraordinary work of our troops on the ground in Iraq and improvements in the situation when it comes to Iraqi forces that the prime minister himself now acknowledges that in cooperation with Iraq it’s time for American forces to start setting out a timeframe for withdrawal and I hope that this administration as well as John McCain are listening to what prime minister Maliki has to say."

On the Democratic convention: “We are excited about the prospect of opening up the convention. I obviously had the great honor of participating in the last convention in Boston and it was terrific, but one of the things I’ve said in the past is that sometimes our conventions don’t feel like they are open to everybody and for us to be able to do it in Invesco Field is an opportunity for 80,000 who might not otherwise have been able to participate to get involved and its consistent with how we want to make sure that people from all walks of life ordinary Americans are able to participate in this convention and I think it will be terrific.”

On McCain saying he'll balance budget by 2013 and whether it's overly ambitious: "Not only is sit overly ambitious, every independent observer whose looked at John McCain's plan says that his plan would add $200-300 bln a year in deficit spending. He hasn't specified how he would bring it down. His own campaign has acknowledged that they don't have specifics. In addition to perpetuating the Bush tax cuts which would add to the deficit in addition to continuing the war in Iraq indefinitely which would add to the deficit what he is also talking about is making sure that or, excuse me with respect to the war, would add to our national debt, what he's talking about is $300 bln in additional tax cuts and nobody knows how they're paid for and when he's asked how would you pay for them, he'll say `well I'm going to eliminate earmarks and pork barrel spending' except it turns out that every time that he's been asked about specific spending cuts -- for example the $2 bln required for the restoration of everglades in Florida he'll say `well I don't have a problem with that particular bit of spending I just don't like the earmarks process it went through,' well if that's the case then it's not a real cut and the truth is there are only about $18 bln dollars worth of earmarks -- there's a big gap between $300 bln dollars and $18 bln dollars. So even if he could eliminate all earmarks he'd still be $282 bln short from coming up with what's needed to provide $100 bln a year worth of tax breaks to corporations.''

More: "And I know that during his statements he was also making some suggestions that my plan would raise taxes on the middle case that is absolutely not the case, and everybody who has looked at it has said that in fact my tax cuts are 3 times more likely to go to the middle class than John McCain's. Only a quarter of his total tax cuts will go to the middle class, less than a quarter, 95 percent of people in America would get a tax cut under my plan, 95%. So some of the statistics that have been thrown out today by John McCain and in the past just don't add up.''

Obama said it was important for us to make some critical investments right now in America's families and did not promise a balanced budget by 2013.

On Republicans' budget resolution attacks accusing him of wanting to raise taxes: "The budget resolutions are not tax votes, they are and everybody in Washington knows this -- the budget process, screwy as it is in Washington -- not one that by the way, I designed and frankly I think has to be fundamentally reformed. The budget resolution is to give some parameters in terms of what in fact -- what the budget’s going to look like in the coming year. But it dos not purport to actually be a tax bill and every observer who looks at this has said that this is a phony issue on the part of the McCain campaign."

On the matter of the Olympics opening ceremonies, he said he would not go barring a sense of progress in talks between the Dalai Lama and China, but also cautioned that he had not been briefed on those talks.

He also talked about the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, his opposition to releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and about No Child Left Behind.

Obama said trickle down?  I thougt he just loved Ronald Reagan?
Even Iraq thinks there should be a timetable. Most reasonable people believe in a time table except for McCain and Bush!

Great Obama Stuff!

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question, or where you are coming from.
Obama's economic plan? Tax everything that moves. Iraq plan? Surrender ASAP.
Obama thinks giving speeches is all a President does. Why would he think different? It's the only thing of value he's ever accomplished with his life.
Trickle down works better then trickle up. That's where you take the wealth from the people that produce and give to the people that don't produce, i.e., the Obama's supporters. That's what they do in France. Maybe the Obama fans should move there, they'd be much happier, and so would we.
Can't wait for the Presidential debates.  Face to face, no parsing, no nuances and no more nonsense and manufactured issues. Let McCain try to get away with the garbage he is spouting without rebuttal.
Obamas plan to balance the budget works, but only if taxes are raised to be 90% of all of our income.
They didn't have the new math when McFossil was in school so you really can't expect him to understand that his plan is just going to run up the charges on our Chinese credit card.  Tax and spend is still better than charge and spend!  Of course when your wife charges $750,000 on her credit card and you haven't paid your property taxes maybe "pay as you go"  is not your motto!!!
I am glad he is talking about something that matter. McCain cannot be trusted with this economy. If McCain is elected, i am sure he will outsource US economy to china.

Ask Brother Romney what he did with those Indiana companies.

McCain is equivalent to more war = Credit from China
Romney is equivalent to Corporate give away = Bain Capital
All you Obama bashers, yammering about him raising taxes on the middle class, why do you insist on not recognizing him for the 1000.00 tax credit he has been talking about for months?

McCain, and Carly Fiorina are still talking about a 33.00 gas tax holiday, and you love them for it. McCain described it as, "a nice little break" for you. It's less than crumbs, but I guess for some of you, all that matters is from whose table they fall.
smoke and mirrors
voodoo economics
borrow and spend
trickle down
Laffer curve
benign neglect
de-regulate monopolies
privatize the common wealth

it is the only kind of discredited economics that the Republicans have offered in the past and what John McCain is offering for the future.
Yes, that a boy.....Obama come out swinging!
Gee after the McCain Solely News Broadcasting Corporation being on air all day its amazing to see a piece on Obama.  I guess you ran out of fill on McCain. Its kind of hard repackaing the same old comments but heck if it sells for the Republicans go for it.
McBush, what says you?
Why anyone would support McCain and his budget is beyond me. It has not worked for the current administration and I fail to see how the same old way will help us. I think we are in the beginning of a terrible recession and it will be hard for anyone to get us out of the fix we have gotten into my Bush. Why not get a fresh look and try something new. I support Obama and Change for the better.
Is Obama purposely avoiding "town halls" with McCain for some strategic purpose???  Because otherwise I am confident Obama would clean the floor with McCain.  Maybe its because people actually looked disfavorably on Gore after he mopped the floor with Bush in the 1st presidential debate.  It is a sad day where having better policies and being smarter than the other guy is a negative to the American people.  After 8 years of a certified moron, I want someone with a brain.
Oh, so, the annointing will take place in a big football stadium?  Mr. Arrogance at work.  Maybe it will rain on his parade.
Amen Senator Obama, slam 'em again for the "trickle down" theory. That means that there has to be alot on top to trickls down to us peons.  I'll take a bottom up approach -Thank you very much- and you can just wait your turn on the top this time around.  What an elitist attitude by the republicans!  We'll let some of "our" money trickle down to ya'll after we have our millions and billions.  You can take that trickle down Reagan philosphy and shove it right up your-you-know-what!

Stay on em' Senator Obama.

Thanks Barack! We can take the extra $600 you send each of us, and just mail it to the Sheikh's in the middle-east. You know, seeing you don't want to look for any oil around here. And then our children and grand-children can pay for your deficit spending. A win-win for sure.
So McCain's plan for the economy: 1) win the Iraq war so we won't have to spend so much money on it; and 2) increase domestic oil production to reduce the cost of gas.

Brilliant!  Why didn't Bush think of just winning this stupid war?  And if the government is going to increase domestic oil production, that must mean McCain is planning on nationalizing the country's oil industry, ala Venezuela.  How else are you going to just increase production?

Do you ever get the idea that McCain doesn't think things through quite all the way?  Just like Bush.
Taxes are a great subject to debate McCain about

the Bush/McCain tax cuts are skewed to the upper income tax payers and large corporations...
.... Deja-Voodoo
More 'supply side' economics (sic)
How do we pay for your wars, John ?
How do we pay for new 'Oil Wars' ?

Let's debate THAT !!
McCain has no way to replace his tax cuts with other revenue

Obama cuts taxes on the middle and lower classes and makes the revenue up with tax increases for the upper income classes

What's not to understand ??

John McCain, More of the SAME

So Obama is telling us that he's going to lower taxes, triple the welfare state, and balance the budget. And he has the guts to call McCain on his economic numbers. Obama must be trying out to be a standup comic.
Now we got some punches being traded...I love it, B.O. takes it back to the issues and talks about what people need to know.  His plans on the economy, the war, and everything american.

Keep it positive, and they will show up to the polls!!
Let's pay off the debt and turn this country around!!
Wow--just listen to Barack talk.  Informed, articulate, factual, and issues-based. When he is negative about John McCain, he is discussing differences on policies, not attacking character. The media can't stand this because Obama doesn't give them any drama to gossip about.  Focus on the facts, folks, and I think you'll see Obama is our best choice this year for POTUS!
Nice to see real issues being discussed...
Well, that was a heavy smack down on John McCain.

When is the press going to actually make John McCain accountable for his crazy ideas on the campaign trail?!?!?!

I would like to see a real analysis of the issues from an objective stand point.  At what point will the press start to look at what these guys are saying and make it a case of "that candidate is full of it" or "that candidate told the truth"?  Instead McCain gets to keep making flat out BOLD FACED LIES, and the press never calls him on it.

Get to work Chuck!
He also spoke about the decision to give his convention speech at Denver's Invesco Field
-----------------
So, what did he say about it?  Who's going to pay for it? I thought the DNC was broke?  Maybe Mr Arrogance will cough up the money for it.
The new republican approach to economic policy is not so much "trickle down" as it is "trickle up."  The government provides aid to the middle class only to the extent it will actually benefit business.  The tax relief people received this year will be enough to pay one mortgage payment, pay the increased cost of gas to drive to and from work, or pay off a defaulted credit card ... maybe.  The only ones who benefit from this will be the businesses that are already in trouble because of republican policies.  It's nothing but a plan to bail out business.  Obama needs to begin using the right terminology.  Trickle down it surely ain't.

Obama 08/12
Neither of these candidates are out of touch. They both see what the economy is like. When Obama or McCain fill up their gas tanks they know what the price is. Do you think that Cindy or Michele doesn't notice the price of groceries when they shop.
Brother Odd (Sent Monday, July 07, 2008 10:02 AM)

Actually, I am sure they don't.  I am not that wealthy yet and my parents are not there either, but they have done well for themselves and neither of them know how much a gallon of milk costs...they know how much it costs to fill up a tank, but they are not that worried about it, so yeah, I think it's quite possible that one or both are out of touch.
Obama opposes releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve? That's a new one for dems. I guess that would screw his union state employee buddies and the college endowment buddies who are buying up oil at the rate of China to keep it off the market.
He wants to avoid using the strategic petroleum reserve, provide a stimulus package, and follow ground commanders' opinion on Iraq. How dare he continue failed Bush policies. Can you sense my sarcasm? Doubtful. For the record, the effect higher taxes on corporations will have on the middle-class American is far more of a squeeze than what current taxes are doing. I'm so excited about Obama failing miserably and waking this country up. Vote Obama!
McCain doesn't know anything about the economy or democracy. He only knows, seemingly, how to not pay his taxes.

McCain is oblivious to sequence his own events. Although McCain speaks slowly, do you really think he is capable enough to reflect his words?  The danger of our infrastructure collapsing is less important to jobs and lives. Musing about his gimmick” gas tax holiday” says no can’t think clearly. Otherwise he would not have voted no for Katrina victims whom he considered pork nor would he tap into the infrastructure budget. That budget pays for thousands of jobs.

Wesley Clark the four- star general was correct about McCain and I hope he never backs down.

Go Obama/Clark

Big high risk—Chris, the high risk is your flip-flop! Why are you in the tank now for McCain and anti-Obama? The stadium is a great idea. Even voters will be able to come.

BTW: It would be political suicide if Obama limited himself to campaign finance and not a 50 state approach. Swift boaters, smears, and the fear factor are/will be the only talking points. Barack’s position on campaign finance was always conditional; he did not flip. Talk to your collegiate Keith Olberman who unlike you and the rest of MSNBC has not flipped.
The McSham camp and the media bought into Obama's statement on reassessing his position... hook, line and sinker!  Obama is in a win/win situation and is now laying the foundation to pummeling the old stooge over the head.  He basically used the media to restate his position of withdrawal and pigeon-holed McSham into re-stating his position on staying the course til victory!

To top it off, the old man came out today and acknowledged that the war is hurting the economy!!  So, how do you propose you stop hurting the economy if you leave american troops in Iraq for the next 100 years?

let the beating begin!!
If Obama can repeat exactly what he said in this press conference about McCain's joke proposal about balancing the budget, he will win going away. You cannot balance a budget in wartime by cutting taxes. It's fiscally irresponsible, and it hasn't worked for the last 7 years, so why would it work now John McCain?
Now that's what I'm talkin 'bout!

I came away from last weekend feeling like all I heard was attacks.  The only real piece of policy talk out there was Obama's education speech.  This session is exactly what the campaigns *should* be doing and what the media SHOULD be covering.

Good story, FR.

This is what i want in my president a guy who can surely reason well...in addressing issue that matters to the citizens of this country.
I completely agree with Obama's comments about the negative RNC ads claiming Obama favors raising taxes and has voted to raise taxes. Every independent analysis that I have seen about this issue is clear that the voting being done is part of the budget process and has no bearing on individual taxes. This smear is a bald-face lie and should be rejected on its lack of merits.
Brilliant work of Barack as usually is the case; yes, he is human and flawed like us all. But the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is for emergency. Until that comes about, hopefully it will not; let’s focus on Barack Obama’s plans for our safety, economy, planet, and changing the face of the ugly American.
The stadium is a great idea. Even voters will be able to come. Now let’s talk about President ional Fireworks and the American Dream

McCain has the better idea on the economy and the most realistic on Iraq.

Did Obama get grey hi-lights???  Seems they appeared over night.  If they are natural and the primaries did that, think what 1 year in the white house would do.

Obama just can't hack it!!!!
McCain is the biggest joke on this earth, he has know idea on how to fix the economey. But he knows how to give the oil companys more. So how his macain going to fix it, his going to give every reuplician with lot of money he will be eleclected and we will be scured again so don't whine when this dump mccain  is put in office because the the american people can't stand up for there rights. OBAMA for PRESDISENT.
The republicans always believe in trickle down economics, the problem is that they haven't realized that by now the american people have suffered from high deficits everytime a republican is in office.  Listen I liked Regan, but we ended up with deficits under him, George H. Bush, and now under George W. Bush.  Trickle doesn't work it never has and it never will, because you don't see McCain giving any of his 7 houses for homeless shelters do you?  No, the rich keep the money, they like the seperation of classes, they like being rich and keeping the poor in their place.  It makes them feel really important.
The McSame plan :   Tell enough (lies) often enough, and the uninformed will tend to believe them. "you are what you eat" / "you know what you read/hear"  and those who listen almost exclusively to FIXed Noise or Rush Limbaugh might as well be former Soviet citizens listening to Ivestia and reading Pravda.
We have had supply side economics, trickle down economics for the past eight years!
And what is the current state of our economy?
Its been more like trickle up economics!
Can't argue with the numbers!
GOP- means, big government, big military/police state
less oversight which leads to  S @ L,  mortgage and loan scandals, war and corporate profiteering, privatization and financial destruction of our social security, and no health care!
Thus creating class warfare the destruction of the middle class!
The GOP has just had eight years of supply side economics and the economy is not prosperous!
The dollar is fading, the stock market is in the tank, our houses are worth less and less, etc.
Recession!
You want to give them four more years?
They should be thrown in jail not the White House!
Obama all the way! But, he better walk the straight path or he will be marched out as well! No more greed!
Only McSame would pretend to balance the buget by 2013. The #'s don't include the cost of the war in Iraq and fixing Healtcare and SSI. John McSame must think that we are stupid. America has had enough of the Bush math. Info. note to you and your corp. media buddies saying that the buget is balanced is not the same as balancing the buget. John McSame your out of touch with American.

Obama/Hagel 08 Real Unity
After the Depression Congress passed the Glass Stegall Act which kept us safe for 65 years. This was repealed by the Gramm Leach Biley Act and Mr. Clinton signed into law.

Since that time we have had a real estate bubble, an oil bubble and a corn bubble.

Wall St controls the economy. Politicans are puppets.
John McCain and the GOP keep misleading the public by saying "Obama wants to raise your tax".  Now, McCain supporters, open your eyes and ears: Obama tax increase only applies to families that make more than $250K/yr which is only 5% of US population.
As a teacher, I'm very interested in what Obama thinks of NCLB.  Please let us know.  I hope he's going to dump it.  It is the most unrealistic approach to education I've ever seen.  Just what we can expect from such a mentally challenged man as Bush.  What an idiot.  He certainly isn't "making adequate yearly progress."
From the sounds out it, it appears that John Mc. has finally finished Chapter 1 of his Econ. 101 book. He is waiting for Lieberman to come up with a true/false test to see if he can move on the second chapter. Don't hold your breath!
