Veepstakes: Fiorina in the spotlight

Posted: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 9:08 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Washington Post's Milbank looks at the idea of Carly Fiorina as McCain's running mate, and he seems to believe she's doing just enough to keep herself in consideration. “Fiorina's brazen breakfast talk demonstrated why she'd be such a risky running mate for McCain -- and yet also, potentially, the most rewarding of his options. She's the most prominent and visible of the women believed to be under consideration for the vice presidency, and her attributes are many: a woman who could appeal to disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters… At the same time, she's unvetted and untested, as her breakfast conversation demonstrated anew (religious conservatives frown on Viagra-and-contraceptives talk) that she's new to the game.”

VIDEO: McCain economic advisor Carly Fiorina joins "Morning Joe" to discuss why former Clinton supporters are looking to support John McCain and the recent shake-up in McCain's team of advisors.

Webb said in a statement that he believes his ‘efforts and talents’ are better suited to the Senate… Regardless, Webb said, he will campaign hard for Obama in Virginia, a traditionally Republican state that many observers think is up for grabs this year.”

More from NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli…
DEMOCRATS: Terry McAuliffe predicts Obama will pick Joe Biden

AZ Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) will chair the DNC Platform Drafting Committee, per the AP. Napolitano yesterday vetoed a bill that would have allowed people to carry loaded guns under the seats of their cars. She says the measure would have “added to the level of uncertainty and danger” law enforcement face.

Hillary Clinton will speak to the American Federation of Teachers in Chicago on Saturday.

The Obama and Clinton camps are sorting out her convention role, including whether to include her in a roll call vote. “A full roll-call vote that reminds everyone how close she came to being the nominee could reveal party rifts going into the fall campaign, they said. But keeping her name off the roll call could anger her supporters.”

Politico looks at Hillary Clinton’s huge email list. "Online ‘supporters’ aren’t, of course, guaranteed to back Clinton on policy initiatives next year, or to support another presidential bid in four or eight years. But they represent a real base of support that the candidate can contact directly -- something far more tangible than the 'base' that watched Gary Hart or Michael Dukakis slide into obscurity after their unsuccessful campaigns."

REPUBLICANS: National Review’s Johnson thinks Pawlenty is the one. “Pawlenty’s relatively conservative credentials come with a genuine blue-collar background that gives him a tremendous personal appeal.” Pawlenty is in Washington today (and so is John McCain, for that matter).

Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) says McCain called to congratulate him on his engagement.

"Terry McAuliffe predicts Obama will pick Joe Biden."

Interesting.  Biden would be a great running mate - with one possible exception: his mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I love Joe Biden.  He calls 'em like he sees 'em.  However, that can get him into trouble sometimes.

But, he does bring some fantastic Senate experience with him.  Foreign Relations Committee et. al.

I still say Mitt Romney would make a great vice president.

“Webb said in a statement that he believes his ‘efforts and talents’ are better suited to the Senate…

The RNC would be more then happy to discuss his soft porn books if he was to become a VP, so I can understand him not wanting to be a VP....

Fiorina has been traveling the breakfast circuit alot lately. But I don't believe Obama will pick Biden, like McAuliffe does.
Crist's engagement smacks of all things political, convenient. Not very inspiring at all.
Fiorina is a political powder keg. I hope McCain loses, but will pray everynight that he does if she is on the ticket. Fiorina as President would be the horror that would keep me up nights.
What a contrast between the Democrat and Republican women. Carly has run major corportations. She's been successful, and has also failed, running large businesses and confronting real world issues. Hillary has been in government nearly all her life. She had a couple of jobs in the private sector for which she's only known as being corrupt. Hillary has no success stories, and has just made it on her husbands name recognition and the Democrats urges to have a "star" in office. The contrast between Carly and Hillary is stark.
Hillary's role at the convention? Usher. And, not the head usher either, but the junior usher from New York. Hillary will have a role in the seating of the Michigan and Florida delegates.
Carly Fiorina as VP?

HA!!!

She was, for all intents and purposes, dismissed as CEO of Hewlett-Packard by their board of directors in 2005.

How did investors greet this news?  The stock gained 6.9% the day her departure was announced after being up as high as 10% during that day.  Said one analyst, "The stock is up a bit on the fact that nobody liked Carly's leadership all that much.  The Street had lost all faith in her and the market's hope is that anyone will be better."

Uncle Fluffy might name HER as his running mate?
Don't give into a Hillary roll call vote.  She lost.  Nothing left to be said about that.

Carly a successful in business?  Dream on.
I still say Mitt Romney would make a great vice president.

Jerry, you mean the one where the Republican Congressman secretly goes after Under 18 Male Pages. Or maybe you mean the one where the Republican senator stalks men's bathroom's looking for Gay Sex. Or maybe it's the one about the Republican senator who Pays for sex with Callgirl's while his Loyal wife stands Ditzy by his side defending him. o Yeah, let's have That conversation. Defending the Undefendable, The Unmoral valeu's of the Moral majority.

Come with something better thatn that, jerry. Have a nice day in La-La-Land!!!

As for Hillary supporter's who still think she Deserves Respect. Get over it, It's about the Winner, Not the whining loser. When She comes out & deny's that Barack is a Muslim, then maybe she'll get My Respect, but not until then. Until then, just keep her on the sideline.

I still say that Claire McCaskill would make an excellent VP pick, she reminds me of Margeret Thatcher.

Barack Obama for POTUS !!!
Hillary - what to do with her? doesn't she know women can't be president?
Carly is not attractive;she taps communication media.
A full roll-call vote didn’t Hillary say at unity fest she knew nothing of a roll-call vote? Is that another lie?
Well, since the Clinton campaign threatened Obama,  saying Obama better not pick a woman VP; I guess Terry McAuliffe thinks he knows the male VP.
=====================================================
Pat Buchanan did very well his morning, pin the old cudgeller and duel talk down. Red light, yellow light green light.
Go Obama/Clark

I get so sick of everyone thinking they have to walk on eggshells concerning Hillary.  Why are they giving her so much power?  Either give her the nomination, or stop kissing her backside, and shut her up.  Obama can make it fine without her.
Why are they discussing Hillary's role at the convention? Is this a common practise among candidates before a convention? It seems that she should not have any role at the convention. She lost and she should not be given any more special treatment than the other candidates who ran and lost. Her supporters can get over it.
Biden is a solid VP choice, without Webb and Strickland....other choices come down to State votes or pushing the Change Message (which, I don't think Obama needs any help pushing the change message).
Other international and government experience choices have some obvious flaws....who would've thought that Biden would have the least of all detriments?

Zoolie, the reason is called 18 million votes. It's questionable that BO is truly the nominee with all the shenanigans that went on.  So, you better not push it.  6 million + are already voting McCain. Don't think BO can REALLY do it without her or without at least showing respect to her. Which, by the way, he told you and all his other supporters recently he expected to do.  You Obomatots better learn to get in line and do as the Master says because that's what's coming if he's prez.
McCain / Fiorina - what a nightmare!!!!!!
BIDEN will be selected as VP.

His greatest attribute is that he will bring with him a plan for Iraq that received 75 votes in the Senate.  It will be very comforting to the American electorate if an OBAMA/BIDEN administration will bring an immediate plan of action to scale down troops.  Additionally, it will be difficult for the 25 Republican Senators who voted for the plan to change their votes.

Further, the new foreign policy/terror front is going to be Afghanistan/Pakistan.  BIDEN knows the current situation and players far better than McCAIN and will be able to help OBAMA take the issue of national security from McCAIN.
Also, all the fuss McCAIN tries to make about OBAMA not holding a single meeting of his Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee, well BIDEN chairs the committee and can speak to the issue and neutralize it.

BIDEN kept neutral after withdrawing from the race, not endorsing OBAMA or CLINTON during the primaries.  For those Hillary voters who touted experience, BIDEN is a VP choice that does not offend.

I support OBAMA completely but, I would feel infinitely better about my vote (not just to win the Presidency but to govern the country) if BIDEN is on the ticket and a member of the administration.

Why are we catering to the Clintons??  Why do people continue to give her special treatment.  Trying so hard not to hurt her feelings.  The primary has ended and whether people like it or not, HILLARY CLINTON LOST!  People need to accept that fact and move on.  Enough of the threats to vote for McCain - If that's what Hillary's supporters want to do - go for it and show everyone just how ignorant you really are.

It's time for the Clinton backers to grow up and face reality.  CLINTON LOST and IS NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT!  Nor will she be Obama's VP, it just isn't going to happen.

Obama is the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States - not Hillary Clinton.  Get used to it Hillary supporters.

OBAMA 08, 12
