Veepstakes: Fiorina in the spotlight

The Washington Post's Milbank looks at the idea of Carly Fiorina as McCain's running mate, and he seems to believe she's doing just enough to keep herself in consideration. “Fiorina's brazen breakfast talk demonstrated why she'd be such a risky running mate for McCain -- and yet also, potentially, the most rewarding of his options. She's the most prominent and visible of the women believed to be under consideration for the vice presidency, and her attributes are many: a woman who could appeal to disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters… At the same time, she's unvetted and untested, as her breakfast conversation demonstrated anew (religious conservatives frown on Viagra-and-contraceptives talk) that she's new to the game.”

“
Webb said in a statement that he believes his ‘efforts and talents’ are
better suited to the Senate… Regardless, Webb said, he will campaign hard for Obama in Virginia, a traditionally Republican state that many observers think is up for grabs this year.”
More from NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli…
DEMOCRATS: Terry McAuliffe predicts Obama will pick Joe Biden.
AZ Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) will chair the DNC Platform Drafting Committee, per the AP. Napolitano yesterday vetoed a bill that would have allowed people to carry loaded guns under the seats of their cars. She says the measure would have “added to the level of uncertainty and danger” law enforcement face.
Hillary Clinton will speak to the American Federation of Teachers in Chicago on Saturday.
The Obama and Clinton camps are sorting out her convention role, including whether to include her in a roll call vote. “A full roll-call vote that reminds everyone how close she came to being the nominee could reveal party rifts going into the fall campaign, they said. But keeping her name off the roll call could anger her supporters.”
Politico looks at Hillary Clinton’s huge email list. "Online ‘supporters’ aren’t, of course, guaranteed to back Clinton on policy initiatives next year, or to support another presidential bid in four or eight years. But they represent a real base of support that the candidate can contact directly -- something far more tangible than the 'base' that watched Gary Hart or Michael Dukakis slide into obscurity after their unsuccessful campaigns."
REPUBLICANS: National Review’s Johnson thinks Pawlenty is the one. “Pawlenty’s relatively conservative credentials come with a genuine blue-collar background that gives him a tremendous personal appeal.” Pawlenty is in Washington today (and so is John McCain, for that matter).
Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) says McCain called to congratulate him on his engagement.
