Over the weekend, the Republican National Committee began running a new TV ad in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin that hits Obama on the issue of energy. Obama "just says no to lower gas taxes," the ad goes. "No to nuclear. No to more production. No new solutions. Barack Obama -- just the party line.”
Now, in the first response ad of the general election, the Obama campaign is counterpunching in those same four states -- by tying Bush to McCain on the energy issue, even including that now-famous McCain-Bush hug. "On gas prices, John McCain's part of the problem," the announcer says in the ad. "McCain and Bush support a drilling plan that won't produce a drop of oil for seven years. McCain will give more tax breaks to big oil. He's voted with Bush 95% of the time."
Here is the script:
On gas prices, John McCain's part of the problem.
McCain and Bush support a drilling plan that won't produce a drop of oil for seven years.
McCain will give more tax breaks to big oil.
He's voted with Bush 95% of the time.
Barack Obama will make energy independence an urgent priority.
Raise mileage standards.
Fast track technology for alternative fuels.
A $1000 tax cut to help families as we break the grip of foreign oil.
A real plan and new energy.
OBAMA: I'm Barack Obama and I approve this message.
