WASHINGTON -- McCain continued his appeals to the Hispanic community Tuesday in a speech to the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), while reiterating his pro-jobs message he launched a day earlier.
Similar to his speech to the National League of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) last month, McCain emphasized the need to address the slowed economy, a problem that hurts the wallets, he said, of all Americans regardless of race.
“Jobs are the most important thing our economy creates,” McCain said. “When you raise taxes in a bad economy, you eliminate jobs. I’m not going to let that happen.”
McCain said his plan -- including tax cuts that are not "intended as a favor to the wealthy Americans" -- is the right way to end this economic downturn.
"If you believe that you should pay more taxes, I am the wrong candidate for you,” he said.
His address was more mild-mannered than his jobs rollout on Monday, which continuously attacked Obama’s economic policies. McCain mentioned his opponent only once Tuesday, chastising him for not participating in joint town hall meetings.
McCain reached out to Latino voters by harking back to his push for comprehensive immigration reform, which he said failed because of concerns over border security.
“We must prove to them that we can and will secure our borders first,” he said, “while respecting the dignity and rights of citizens and legal residents of the United States.”
Obama is scheduled to address the same crowd this afternoon. McCain met earlier today with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski at his Virginia headquarters. McCain said the two discussed missile defense and policies toward European countries like Belarus, Georgia and the Ukraine.
