McCain's meeting with black GOPers

Posted: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 5:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- African-American Republicans told McCain Tuesday not to abandon efforts to court black voters, despite the uphill battle in facing a prominent African-American Democratic challenger, meeting participants told NBC/National Journal.

A small group of black Republican current and former elected officials met with McCain at his Virginia headquarters, carrying a message that McCain and the Republican Party should reach out to black voters through “conversation and engagement” on issues like economic policy and healthcare.

“It’s important, especially with an African American running on the Democratic side, that the party reawaken its relationship (with black voters), no matter how tattered and torn it has been over the years,” Michael Steele, the former Maryland lieutenant governor, said in an interview.

Included in the group were Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell -- who ran lost to Ted Strickland in 2006 for Ohio governor -- and former Rep. J.C. Watts, according to the campaign. Lynn Swann, the pro football Hall of Famer who ran for Pennsylvania governor in 2006, participated by conference call.

Steele said the group pressed McCain to speak before the NAACP and Urban League later this month. He said the presumptive Republican nominee promised to open dialogue with African-American leaders throughout the summer.

“When you make the fatal flawed assumption, 'They won’t vote for us; why bother?' you get what that assumption gives you,” said Steele, who ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

President Bush garnered 11 percent of the African American vote in 2004, according to exit polls, a two percent increase from 2000. The Republican Party has courted black voters in recent years, specifically by seeking minority candidates for state and federal office.

But Steele said he did not believe McCain could garner 10 percent against Obama. He acknowledged that many black voters will flock to Obama, including some who have not voted in the past.

But that does not mean the party should concede the group, Steele said, adding McCain has a unique story to tell black voters and can “show his heart,” specifically citing the family’s adoption of daughter Bridget, who was born in Bangladesh with a cleft palate.

Interesting, culturethreads.com has some good stuff on this in the must see TV section.... a good site overall.

Sure why not? McCain thinks he can still win in Vietnam, and Iraq too!

This is my first time here.  Is this supposed to be a news site or a support group for angry liberals?

John - you want news, go to Fox. You want some fun, read the delusional rantings of the mindless left wing liberals written on these very pages.

And many congrats on your two Super Bowl rings.

Here are a couple of superior athletes of which I have been a fan.

I find their lack of empathy for the little people who have helped to make them millionaires perplexing.

If you two have no problem paying for gas, more power to you. However, most American's do. Your glee in mocking us for giving voice to the pain suffered by average folks these days, given how youv'e benefited from their devotion, speaks volumes, and it is not flattering.

Where is your righteuos dissent that hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost, or broken, (both American, and Iraqi), because of the Bush adminstration's lies?

Your callous kind is clueless, and deserves no further consideration.

A fan no more.
McCain has a unique story to tell black voters and can “show his heart,” specifically citing the family’s adoption of daughter Bridget, who was born in Bangladesh with a cleft palate.

****

Point being...kids from other countries are important.  Poor kids in this country..not so much.`
Somehow I don't think mccains medicine of throwing black families off of social programs with his draconian budget cuts or killing the rest of them in his program of endless wars is going to be a winner for most black folks
John Mccain loves black people, his wife employs several of them for domestic help
HAHAHAHAHAHA - Good luck with that old man.
Good. If some AAs see their leaders supporting McCain, it should help them see it's ok not to vote Obama simply because of race. If McCain gets 10% of their votes, good.  That's 10% BO won't get.
J.C. Watts,Colin Powell, and Armstrong Williams are leaning to Obama Johnny boy.

What does an adopted Bangladeshi girl "with a cleft palate" have to do with black voters?

Seriously. The McCains (Cindy in particular) fell in love with an orphan girl they met, so they adopted her. They have big hearts. It's a wonderful story.

But what in God's name does it matter to black voters? And why would it matter more to them than other ethnicities (like, oh, I don't know, Bangladeshi-Americans)?
McCain and the GOP will carry approx. 8-to-9% of the black vote, 35-to-37% of the Hispanic vote, and 57% of the white vote.

This will be enough to win the election in November, and then some.

In the past 3 weeks, Obama has tried to show that he's "tough" enough to move to the center on Iraq, FISA, guns, etc.

Obama just looks hypocritical. Obama's "trancendent" message of "hope and change" is gone. Obama never believed any of that stuff anyway.

Sadly, Obama's just another liberal Chicago politician. Obama has lost his "sizzle", and he's just another tired ole Chicago pol.

McCain represents the future. Have you noticed McCain lately? Now, that's trancendent!!!

McCain 08/12!
I am an African American registered as a repubican who agrees with Michael Steele but I think it is too little too late. The Republican party has given up on us and the Bush administration more or less used us, mostly the black christian church members who voted for him,to help get elected. He never did anything with the faith based community although he had several pastors to attend a meeting that was meant to promote goodwill with the christian community towards doindg something about addressing the social problems of the nation.I would have voted for the Republic party had Mike Huckabee won but I am fearful that McCain is more of the same and there is no coherent policy coming from his campaign. It is more confused than the administration we have been party to for 8 years. So I am resigned to vote for the Democratic party and look forward to 2016 when Kuckabee will have a chance to win. I think Barack Obama is serious about turning this nation around and really has a heart for people. None of the people who are against him have given up as much as he has to help those who have been force to live on the streets unless you've been there. I am one who had to live in the streets and I know it takes someone with a heart for people to get out there and help when you could have immensely more by taken the opportunities that are available. The man had everything at his fingertips but instead he sacrificed it to go to lowest part of the city to help the downtrodden. I think he will make a tremendous President for all people and he has the intelligence to surround himself with a group of wise men as well as women from both parties to lead this country back. Obama 08
Ira, Freehold, NJ -- we are paying $5 a gallon for gas and are in a recession . . .

Both lies. You have no credibility.

But both will be true if Obama is ever President.
Gage Walker, Spokane WA (Sent Tuesday, July 08, 2008 2:26 PM)

Mr. Walker:
I don’t know what world you are living in but here in the good old USA, we folks in the northeast are paying over $5 a gallon for gas.  The national average is over $4.10 and that does not include city and state taxes.
If you believe that this country is not in a recession, that the economy is just “slowing” as Senator McCain phrased it, then you must disagree with the vast majority of financial experts in this country.  People like Warren Buffet and his ilk.  They must be liars and be void of credibility also.
I really would love to live on the planet you reside on!

Ira, Freehold, NJ (Sent Tuesday, July 08, 2008 3:52 PM)

---------------

Apparently you're going to the full service stations in NJ Ira. Highest gas price found in NJ was in Summit at $4.89, but that was very high price with the next highest being $4.41. A Shell in Summit had gas at $4.12. People on a budget found gas for $3.83 in NJ. Source:newjerseygasprices.com

In Freehold - lowest price is $3.86 - Highest is $4.13, far from the $5.00 you propose. So if we're on different planets, it looks like I'm on Earth, and you're on some other planets "New Jersey".

Also, the US is not in a recession, even though liberals who wish pain on others hope it was in recession. Two successive quarters of negtive growth are required for a recession to occur. The US is currently at 0 quarters of negative growth. Warren Buffett can whine all he wants about it, but those are the facts.

This statement is offensive, stupid, and smacks of homologous tokenism. It is largely uncommon for whites to rush into orphanages to adopt black babies Mr. Steele, and you know it.

As a matter of fact, their adoption of Asian, Russian, and babies from other foreign countries is a wonderful thing, but hardly a compelling reason for Black voters to turn on their heels, and rip their support from Obama.

Moses had his Dathan, and AA's have their toms.

Ew!

Black GOPers are as rare as liberals with brains.
In times like these the last thing you should want to do, especially as an American, is elect a Muslim to the White House.
During the democratic primaries, Obama received over 90% of the African-American vote.  During the general election he will probably receive at least that percentage or possibly more if both independent and republican African-American voters move for him.

I can't see black voters moving towards McCain in large numbers.  There is a reason the majority of Afro-American and Hispanic voters are democrats.  It's in their best interest.

McCain won't do NAACP and Urban League. He'll have to explain his vote AGAINST MLK Holiday. He'll have to explain how he viewed the role of African Americans in POW camps and how he felt they 'turned' on America while in captivity.

Plus, voting African Americans are largely evangelical and won't approve of his "wife switch", just as White evangelicals haven't.
Yeah, maybe McCain should talk with the african american republicans.  Last week huff had a story about how the black republicans were using racist radio ads against Obama.  I don't know how many will be interested in hearing anything from McCain after hearing those ads.
The problem is there is no reason why African Americans should vote for McCain. We have already seen what Republican leadership can do over the last 8 years and to say we are not impressed would be an understatment. Moreover, this is the same guy that didnt even want MLK's birthday to be a holiday in his state. Did want people to even take a day off. But now its an election year and now he wants our votes. Someone tell McCain to not waste his time.
WTH is Michael Steele talking about when he states that "It is important...that the party reawaken its relationship(with black voters)no matter how tattered and torn it has been over the years." Michael just call us "novacaine" 'cause  we ain't feeling (or hearing) John McSame!  He stands the proverbial "snowballs chance in hell!" with me and my family and friends.
maybe mccain can tell then to stop making ads like this

Hillary got 5-10%.  Do they really think he'll get as much or more than she did?  LOL
BWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!!!!!! (*WHEW*)

I JUST SPIT MY SODA ALL OVER MY COMPUTER.

NOW THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST FIRSTREAD I'VE READ IN A LONG TIME.

DID YOU SEE HOW UNCOMFORTABLE McSAME LOOKED WHEN HE WAS AT THE MLK 40 ANNIVERSARY A COUPLE MONTHS AGO?

HE LOOKED LIKE HE JUST MADE A WRONG TURN INTO THE HOOD. (LOL)

JOHN McSAME DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

PLEASE DON'T EMBARRASS YOURSELF.

JUST LET IT GO McSAME.

THAT WOULD BE LIKE TELLING OBAMA TO GO AND TALK IN FRONT OF THE KLAN...
I hear that behind the sceens, McCain was quoted as saying something to the effect of this:

I love those colored people and I just don't know why they won't vote for me?!?!?!
A small group of black Republican current and former elected officials met with McCain

Uh, how small was it (the group)?  You fellas are certainly wary of overstatement, I'll give you that.  The notion alone simply seems funny.
AMERICA HAS EXPECTATIONS,

Obama’s impossible road ahead:

http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2008/07/why-obama-will-win-but-cant-deliver.html

So Michael Steel wants McCain to now exploit his adopted daughter for political gain just like he has his military service?

Isn't it pretty hilarious that the Republicans have to reach as far as a Texas Railroad Commissioner and some guys who ran for office and failed to get elected just to show that there are a handful of African-American Republicans???

I predict McCain won't even get 5% of the African-American vote!
McCain will get the votes from this group, but not many more.  Kanye West had it right - George Bush doesn't care about black people. Nor does the Republican party.  Nor do they care about wage earners.  Or soldiers.  They care about corporations.
You're kidding right?! I bet even the guys telling him this nonsense are voting for Obama. I don't know how a black man could look his son in the eye and say he voted against the first black president. I could understand if GW Bush was a democrat, but with the GOP being so unpopular, I can't see how a sense of history will not take over.I'm sure many black republicans will be swearing their families to silence about their votes for Obama. Who could blame them?

Add to that, the fact that the black vote is now lost to republicans for at least another 20 years just with Obama's nomination.

McCain would have better luck investing his thin budget & limited time in the Latino vote. Distrust that's been sewn between black & brown voters, and the newness of Obama might give McCain an extra 5-10% if he works it.
I do not understand the seeming double standard.  The GOP is the party of Lincoln and the civil rights laws of the 60's were passed because the Republicans insisted while the Democrats resisted.

How is it that the black community largely supports the Democrats then?  Senator Byrd, whom some describe as the "conscience of the Senate" has strong ties to the KKK.  No one protests or even barely mentions it.  I'm sure there are those on the GOP side as well, but they don't get a pass by the media when they're identified.  They are disgraced as well they should be.  But so should the Democrats.  What gives?

It seems to me that the liberal social giveaway policies, Affirmative Action, protectionist policies, etc. of the Democrats are embraced by the black community and its leaders.  But those same policies strike me as being a lot like giving a man a fish, but not teaching him to fish.  He's fed for the day, but not for life.  This type of politics is the politics of dependency and creates a different type of bondage.

So, though I can understand a short-sighted desire to reap from the Democrats' policies, I can't understand why there isn't more forward thinking and individual thinking that would result in the black community being distributed proportionally among the parties.  The black community isn't really that monolithic, are they?!?
I didn't know there was such a thing!
To me, this is just like the women vote. People are going to vote for who they want to vote for. Both sides are going to get a percentage of all demographics. If a candidate doesn't "woo" a certain group, then that is taking that group for granted, but wont stop others for voting for that candidate.

And by the way, why can't we get to a point where we are all just Americans? Putting lables on different group helps feed into people being treated, and asking to be treated differently. Maybe when we as a society actually come together and realize that we have wonderful people across America that can do wonderful jobs. No matter there heritage background!

Just a thought....
**But that does not mean the party should concede the group, Steele said, adding McCain has a unique story to tell black voters and can “show his heart,” specifically citing the family’s adoption of daughter Bridget, who was born in Bangladesh with a cleft palate.**

What does McCain adopting a child from Bangladesh have to do with us black folk? I can only suppose that because she is brown, that I should be jumping for joy ...

I'm thoroughly unimpressed.

I agree that they should court the black vote, but only because it will tie up resources and cash, for votes he won't get.

Obama '08
Kind of hard to appeal to the African American voter when your policies do not positively impact their lives. Add to this the 527 racist attacks that you will not condemn will further cause you problems. Finally, the first African American Presidential candidate and you have the perfect storm where you will be lucky to get 3% of the vote.
hahahahahaha

black GOP'ers?

yeah, mccain. go for 'em. i'm sure that dozens will vote for you.

hahahahahaha
What's a GOPER?  Oh, that's GOPers, threw me there for a sec.
I try to avoid cynical comments, but I was struck by something here.
FORMER Sec of State of Ohio
FORMER Lt Governor of Maryland
FORMER Rep of Oklahoma
FAILED CANDIDATE for Gov of Pennsylvania (i.e. not elected)
That leaves the elected Texas RAILROAD commissioner!  Is that the highest elected African American official in the U.S.?!?!?!

GOP:  Kudos for trying!
Ya know, black have been here for how many centries?  I just don't want a US president who has seen it fit to know the African American Community by age 70+!  A 70 plus year old presidential candidate in 2000-flippin-08 ought not to need massive coaching on how to interact and deliver a message to a population that has been here as long as Whites doggoneit and I AM WHITE! This "drive-by" campaigning just has to be squashed. Shame on any Americans who find this acceptable.
Wishful thinking black republicans. I can't see how anyone can be black and republican with the intolerance that the party has. The values that the republicans espouse are wonderful values. It's what attracted me to the republican party years ago. The problem is there are way too many hypocrites running that party. "Yes, we embrace black people, we just won't give you the support and elect you to a congressional or senate seat." They have allowed the Democratic party to be the party of inclusion. Good luck getting converts guys.
Obama, Has yet climbed the mountain of truth! Even the low class black see how shallow and how his real
hidden agenda has come forth. Back tracking like Clinton when you have put your foot in the mouth! I can say, He doesn't shut up when he is ahead!
I cant believe the McCain camp had a little 60 year old librarian ticketed and removed by 4 cops for holding a sign that said McCain = Bush sign outside his "open" town hall today!!

There are also claims that the McCain camp even screens reporters with questions on their conference calls and also awards access to the campaign plane if the reporter "earns" it....by writing favorable articles about McCain...

This is truly as low as low can get. If McCain is the man he says he is he will call the librarian and apologize and offer to pay her ticket. Freedom of speech cannot be censored!
Black Republicans can talk all they want, but their party won't listen.  As a black female who was once open to voting Republican, what I have seen is that the Republican Party is so addicted to years racial politics and speaking in racial codes to their white constituency that they will never receive any sizeable portion of the black vote.  To get any black votes, the Republican Party will have to drop the racist whites of the South and stop the race baiting. They will NEVER do this, and as a result, they will continue to have problems with BOTH Latino voters and African American voters. Republicans rely on the premise that "everybody is a little racist".  Republicans should maybe push for the reemergence of a third party to dump the racist white constiutency---something like the "Dixiecrats"----Good luck or Good riddens.  As the old guards and hard core racists of the 1960's die out---the south is becoming more diverse and less racist.  The Republican party will not be able to depend on the South as a voting block at all in the next Presidential election in 2013.
Really, the Republicans should give up on courting the black vote, at least until they mend their ways. The GOP can't provide any evidence it has done anything for blacks in decades. Instead, the party has built its electoral strategy on polarizing the country along racial lines. Huge resentment and distrust of blacks among rank and file Republicans. McCain should save himself the embarrassment of trying to appeal to groups he and his party don't even care for.
Only 4 African American GOPers?  That speaks volumes.  Dont be fooled by the rhetoric.
probably not much of a chance that this meeting will be in a 75,000 seat football areana
Senator McCain is going to need all the help he can get in the fall (not that I'm rooting for him).
But, if you recall the Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting in D.C. back in May, you saw A LOT of African American (particularly women) who were fighting for Hillary Clinton.  So by no means does Obama have the black vote on lock at 95%.

Okay, who am I kidding, he's intelligent, ambitious, and from all we can tell, a strong family man. So, pretty much most Americans - Anglo, Asian, Black, Latino, Native American, etc. will vote for him.
You heard it here first folks - abbsetn something dramatic happening in the next 100 days, don't be surprised if Obama wins with at least 300 electoral votes.
Ladies and gentlemen.... the latest from McBush about all things foreign policy!
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/07/08/mccains_latest_iran_joke.html

As an African American-I can only speak for myself -BUT -I don't think that this has anything to do with Obama being the Democratic nominee- It has to do with the fact that 90%+ African Americans in this counrty have not voted for a Rebublican candidate since we were "ALLOWED" to vote (or rather were not disenfranchised or killed for trying)- and probably never will. The GOP has set a precedence for NOT being the least bit interested in the Black vote and actually have shown in subtle and not so subtle ways that they just simply HATE BLACK PEOPLE. So we usually go with the LESSER of two evils (even though we acknowledge the fact that some Democrats are racist too!!!) The disdain is just not as bad. Unfortunately, It is either this choice or simply don't vote.
I think McCain has written off the black vote....big mistake.  There are many conservative African Americans out there who just want to be acknowledged.  Not everyone who is black is voting for Senator Obama.
I agree McCain should work hard for African American votes. I think it would be a fine use for his campaign cash.
