McCain's meeting with black GOPers

Posted: Tuesday, July 08, 2008 5:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- African-American Republicans told McCain Tuesday not to abandon efforts to court black voters, despite the uphill battle in facing a prominent African-American Democratic challenger, meeting participants told NBC/National Journal.

A small group of black Republican current and former elected officials met with McCain at his Virginia headquarters, carrying a message that McCain and the Republican Party should reach out to black voters through “conversation and engagement” on issues like economic policy and healthcare.

“It’s important, especially with an African American running on the Democratic side, that the party reawaken its relationship (with black voters), no matter how tattered and torn it has been over the years,” Michael Steele, the former Maryland lieutenant governor, said in an interview.

Included in the group were Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell -- who ran lost to Ted Strickland in 2006 for Ohio governor -- and former Rep. J.C. Watts, according to the campaign. Lynn Swann, the pro football Hall of Famer who ran for Pennsylvania governor in 2006, participated by conference call.

Steele said the group pressed McCain to speak before the NAACP and Urban League later this month. He said the presumptive Republican nominee promised to open dialogue with African-American leaders throughout the summer.

“When you make the fatal flawed assumption, 'They won’t vote for us; why bother?' you get what that assumption gives you,” said Steele, who ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

President Bush garnered 11 percent of the African American vote in 2004, according to exit polls, a two percent increase from 2000. The Republican Party has courted black voters in recent years, specifically by seeking minority candidates for state and federal office.

But Steele said he did not believe McCain could garner 10 percent against Obama. He acknowledged that many black voters will flock to Obama, including some who have not voted in the past.

But that does not mean the party should concede the group, Steele said, adding McCain has a unique story to tell black voters and can “show his heart,” specifically citing the family’s adoption of daughter Bridget, who was born in Bangladesh with a cleft palate.

Being a Black Republican must not be very much fun at all today. When these politicians' grandkids ask them what part they played in this historic election it will be even less fun.

If Obama actually pulls it off and makes it all the way to the White House, they will be on the outside of the ecstatic joy looking in and will never be able to say "I helped make that happen".  If he doesn't, they'll have to tell their grandkids they helped defeat the man  who could have been the first Black President of the United States.

Either way, I don't envy them. Of course after what Blackwell did using every trick in the book, including denying sufficient numbers of voting machines to  blacks and other Democrats in Ohio, actively fighting to prevent them from voting so  the worst President in history could win a second term, few will feel sorry for him if he becomes a skeleton in his descendents' closet.
Most people tend to think that the African American vote is devoted to Obama. I'm African American and I like McCains stance on abortion. However, I feel that he’s too timid to ask for my support. He probably feels that we have already rejected him because of the African American’s perception of Bush. However, Bush had prominent people of color on his staff.
Steele: A hack trying to prove he still has SOME value left.

yeaaaaa
Wow, all  black Republicans on the same call.  That is quite a logistical feat for the McSame campaign.

michael steel. can never speak for black people. we see him him on fox news talking down on us. america don't want to hear what real black people have to say. do u think black people belive obama is going to change any thing, lol

you don't need to look no further he is "one of ya'll". when we going to free our political prisoners when we going to even admit that we have political prisoners. cointelpro. yeah, he ain't one of us he a patriot. lmao
Why now, where were these black republicans during the primary when non of the republican candidates (including McCain) would attend black sponsored debates?  I will tell these black republicans the same thing I will tell white republicans, if you have a candidate that is looking out for your interest then vote for him/her, not party.  The republican party plays to the cultural divide and the majority of black people are not welcome there or supported there.  McCain is a good example, he voted against a Martin Luther King Holiday.  This token appearance is too little and too late in my opinion.  I don't vote for party's, having said that, I would vote for Arnold Scwhatzenager and maybe Standford (SC Gov.) for President and their republican, but most of the other republicans are toxic.
When I look at Senator Jonh McCain's audience, it is not representative of America's diversity.  His audience is typically older white individuals.  I have noticed an obligatory African American seated directly behind him to give the auspices of diversity to the group.  How does Senator McCain intend to change the image of his party, that of exclusion, to to one that embraces inclusion?  The later which  represents all the diverse and unique individuals who are Americans.  Voters are not to be taken for granted by a staged appearance by Senator McCain at a NAACP or Urban League conference.  It will be the senator's past record on how he has embraced diversity and how he has championed the rights for others.
I think McCain has forgotten the African American voter.  His new "Love" ad shows only 1 person of color. "McCain has a unique story to tell black voters" well I would like to hear it!
Take Notice McOld none of these people won the elections they were seeking.

Swan- lost Gov. Pa.
Steele- lost Senate in Maryland
Blackwell- lost Gov. in Oh.
Watts- lost his re-election seat in Ok.

Keep talking to these sellout losers you may get .1 of th Black vote. You Dinosaur
So Steele you are saying put his disabled daughter out there to garner votes. Give me a Break!
I think that the 'black republicans' are absolutely right about this.

If someone is running for President, it's important to *try* with all groups.  I don't think McCain will win more than 10% of serious environmentalists either, but he put out a commercial and made an attempt to pitch to them.

Also, 'showing his heart' is the best advise anyone can give.  This is an important part of being Presidential . . . for both candidates.
NOT THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS DONE ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT THAT WOULD IMPACT AFRICAN AMERICANS, THESE GUYS THESE TO ASK THEIRSELVES WHY SHOULD I VOTE REPUBLICAN. WHAT DOES MCCAIN OFFER.
Steele's comments show exactly why he and other "black republicans" don't know diddly about attracting black voters or what they are talking about in general. To suggest that McCain adopting of a dark skinned child somehow shows his commitment to issues which affect African Americans is shallow thinking at best.
Steele, Swann, and the others have lost their minds.  McBush of 2000 may have been able to reach out to the African American voters but not now.  Not when the African American community has already seen how they will try to paint Obama as a foreigner and a boogy man.  Should an American be casted as such just to strike fear in the minds of other Americans?  I think not.

Steele, Swann, Blackwell, and Watts have all seen their own political aspirations fall to the waste side by not being able to garner support from the African American community and have found that they themselves were not supported by any other community to offset that gap.  McBush does not stand a chance and would be a proven fool if he even tried.
Shame on you Chuck Todd. Your interviews last night on Countdown and your comments this morning on Morning Joe were clearly lacking of any journalistic integrity. Your comment about the old shoe was disastrous. That (Republican) shoe is worn out - we want and need a new one. You forget that the American people really are uncomfortable in the shoes we are currently wearing. It is part of our survival that we need to change shoes.

Also today your comments about Iran and McCain and that somehow we what we like about McCain are things like security and war issues. You could not be further from the truth. Ask Americans if they want John McCain to take us to war with Iran. He was on the losing side AT ALL TIMES of the Iraq war. We shouldn't gone in, the surge "success" is just spin for politicial gain, and the Iraqi government do not want a long term occupation and want us out. Where in there lies good judgement in war time issues with McCain and his policies?

We as the public as sick and tired of the media continuing to repeat as truth the right wing talking points of the day. Not this time! If we wanted only pro-McCain information, we would watched FIXED NEWS. I have to say that you, Andrea Mitchell, Joe Scarborough, and Pat Buchanan are worse than any Fixed News broadcast. At least they are so absurd in their reporting it is humorous. You are just incorrect and manipulative. It is insulting to the American's intellict and ability.
As an AA, I wud never consider McCain or the Republican Party. The party is full of bigots and continuously ignore all minorities. Bush will be the last Rep to be elected ignoring minorites. As for McCain, adopting an orphan from Bangladesh does not make up for voting against MLK day for 3 times and trying to keep if from being recognized in AZ. AA Republicans can't even defend their party with a straight face and single fact.
I DONT CARE WHOM MCCAIN IT IS, ITS NOT GOING TO MAKE HIM ANYMORE POPULAR THAN HE IS!!!!! CHANGE IS COMING PEOPLE NEED IT WE STRIVE FOR IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO REPUBLICAN ON IN THIS COUNTRY THAT CAN EVER RESTORE LIFE THE WAY IT USED TO BE HERE!!!! A DEMOCRAT IS THE ONLY PERSON OR GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT CAN, ENOUGH OF FEAR TACTICS AND ELECTION FIXING BY REPUBS, AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL FINALLY SPEAK AGAINST THE REPUBS AND TAKE THE COUNTRY BACK TO THE WAY IT USED TO BE BEFORE G W BUSHIE GOT INTO OFFICE.
Oh, I thought it said black gofers. Sorry. Jesse
