Michelle Obama decries short-term fixes

Posted: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 5:31 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann
PONTIAC, Mich -- In response to a question about the economic stimulus checks administered by the U.S. government earlier this year, Michelle Obama said her husband believes that short-term fixes don't solve economic problems.

"You're getting $600," she told an audience of mostly African-American women here. "What can you do with that? Not to be ungrateful or anything. But maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn't pay down every bill every month."

"Barack's approach is that the short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good," she continued. "And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings," she joked.

The Obamas have been fighting Republican attacks painting the couple as elitist. Michelle Obama, who has been something of a lightning rod for the attacks, has fought those charges by highlighting the irony between the charges and her upbringing on the South side of Chicago. But her line on earrings could be red meat for some, particularly in making them in Pontiac. The satellite city south of Detroit was once a booming auto industry town, but now the per capita income is 40% below the national average and almost a quarter of the population is below the poverty line.

Speaking about her role as a surrogate, Obama, who was speaking as part of a series of roundtables on women's issues. also admitted her trepidation about going into too much detail about her husband's policies. "I try to stay away from getting his policies wrong, because it'll be on the front page," she said. As if reading the headline of a newspaper pantomimed in her hands, she mock-read, "Barack Obama's wife says…."

To the delight of the women in the audience, and Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, who sat to Mrs. Obama's right on stage, the aspiring First Lady mimicked the resulting dispute she would have with her husband if she misrepresented his plans.

"You said WHAT?"

"Yeah, I said you were gonna do this!"

NOTE: Obama also addressed her husband's policy toward troop withdrawal from Iraq, which was in the headlines for Obama saying he would be open to "refine" his position after visiting the region. She did not mention the recent accusations of flip-flopping that her husband has faced for the comment, but she did emphasize that her husband will be "thoughtful" and take a "balanced perspective" towards ending the conflict.

"Getting out of the war will require some planning," she said. "His plan for withdrawal will begin on Day One, but it will be a thoughtful withdrawal that won't leave troops in harm's way."

If ANYONE makes a big deal about the earrings comment, he/she is a moron.  period.
Did anyone notice that Senator McCain avoided going to DC for today's votes?

Even Senator Kennedy came in today because of the importance of Medicare.  McCain intentionally missed today's vote because he has repeatedly voted against the legislation.

Be sure, McCain will talk big, but when he had an opportunity for action he never even made an effort.
Smart and classy woman.  She'll certainly delight as a first lady.  It'll certainly be an upgrade from eight years of Texas tumbleweeds.
Give us all a break with this crap.... Cindy McCain with her millions and lavish spending, vacation homes, jet etc... to even attempt to pick apart something Michelle said is really reaching again.
Here it comes... it's been way too long since a HUGE SCANDAL was invented by the media.  So ladies and gentleman, I present to you, Earrings-gate.

Who cares?

Iran test fires missiles, and MSNBC counters with headlines regarding a would-be First Lady's comments on a stimulus plan.  Awesome coverage guys.  You're making Russert proud, I'm sure.

This isn't news.  There's no need to cover it.  You are attempting to generate stories rather than simply cover them.  Disgraceful.

THis woman is the joke.  She acually thinks people who are having a hard time buying food and gas are gonna use 600 dollars and buy ear rings???
Where is your thread about McCain's "joke" about killing Iranians?

The MSM are like little yappy dogs who have had half of their brain removed so all they can do is sit there and slobber and take a sh** while they wait for Karl Rove and the McCain campaign to tell them what to think next.

John McCain is a little too comfortable making "jokes" about killing innocent civilians.

As Bob Cesca says: "...the presidential candidate who the pundit-bots have canonized as the man best suited to balance upon the razor's edge between war and peace happens to be the fidgety lunatic suffering from involuntary giggle fits..."

she is right. the stimulus check I received is a joke. It is not enough to pay my bills, gas and student loans. We need to stop with the quick fixes  We need real solutions for the high price of gas and food. we need more jobs instead of outsourcing them. we need to make education affordable. we need to regulate the mortage companies in order to prevent predatory loans. we need to have affordable healthcare. we need to increase minimum wage. these are solutions.
I will make a prediction right now. Tomorrow on Morning Joe the entire crew will be talking about Mrs Obama's joke about buying earrings. Senator McCain said he will balance the budget by 2013, every economist responded by saying Senator McCain doesn't know what he is talking about. Will the Morning Joe panel talk about this, I think not.
Go ahead McCain camp, spin and twirl her comments about a person treating themselves to earrings with their stimulus check..GO RIGHT AHEAD, but please mention Cindy McCain's $500,000+ credit card shopping spree last month. Really? Who is the eltist?
She'd make a fine first lady IMO.

Cindy McCain is pretty and all for an old lady, but i hear she has a nasty habit of cheating on her war hero husband.
Of course the Dogs will be sniffing around for any minute trace of "Red Meat" they can latch onto.
I took her statements to imply  - you pay a bill, then try to treat yourself to something nice and then you're out of money.  I would like to see the entire video.   Sounds also, like she was trying to emphasize the need for long-term changes to our energy policies.  I like her very much, she is genuine in her heart to me.
Obama also addressed her husband's policy toward troop withdrawal from Iraq, which was in the headlines for Obama saying he would be open to "refine" his position after visiting the region. She did not mention the recent accusations of flip-flopping...
---------------------------------------------

Why don't you media doofuses going to buy yourselves a dictionary and look up what the word "refine" means? It doesn't mean do a 180-degree reversal like McCain did on tax cuts for the rich. The "refine" means to improve, or make more precise. Can't you invent a new bogus accusation to smear Obama with? This one is getting really old. And the WaPo is reporting that McCain is "refining" his position on Iraq, too, after the Iraqi government gave him a sound slap in the face by demanding a timetable for US troop withdrawal. If McCain is "refining," it must be OK, right?
