Veepstakes: Carly gets some criticism

Posted: Thursday, July 10, 2008 9:07 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Los Angeles Times calls out Carly Fiorina for having "taken some license with McCain's positions." The paper cites her courting women and saying, "There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth control medication. Those women would like a choice." "But as the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America was happy to point out, McCain twice voted against measures that would have required insurance companies to cover birth control -- in 2003 and 2005. The Republican said Wednesday that he did not recall those votes. 'It's something that I had not thought much about,' he added. A campaign aide who refused to speak by name said the Arizona senator opposed all mandates.

She also told women in Ohio that McCain "has never signed on to efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade." But "according to his campaign website: 'John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.'"

The San Francisco Chronicle adds that Fiorina is being “buffeted by intense criticism that, as a star campaign surrogate, she is playing fast and loose with the facts.”

More from NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli…
DEMOCRATS: Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) joined Hillary Clinton in voting against FISA. Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) was among 21 “mostly moderate Democrats” voting for it. "With tensions rising" over Iran, Biden opened a hearing yesterday "by scolding the Bush administration for not adequately engaging Iran on its nuclear programs." Biden: "Let me be blunt: In my view, as a result of the policies this administration has pursued, Iran, not freedom, has been on the march in the Middle East."

Stateline looks at governors in states where the opposite party dominates, and says that Sebelius is one of the few who may be succeeded by someone in her own party. A local analyst calls her efforts “to boost the Democratic infrastructure and fundraising capacity” her “great legacy.” And for the first time in six years, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS) endorsed in a Democratic primary for state Senate.

REPUBLICANS: Some of Mitt Romney’s top donors say his fundraising efforts have earned him a spot on the ticket. McCain was asked if he and Romney have buried the hatchet. “Oh yeah, we've spent a lot of time together, spent time together and -- And you know I've seen other primaries," McCain said, "and they've been much more spirited and sometimes much rougher than ours was."

The Palm Beach Post does the latest “engagement helps VP chances” story for Charlie Crist, but it has this interesting sentiment from Crist. He says that “having a wife would make him a better governor,” even as he “disputed the notion that marital status matters much to voters.” “Voters are very smart, and I think they have a great ability to see through all of this sort of stuff that might be thrown at you during the course of a campaign," Crist said.

And that is why Joe Biden is awesome.

Women can take Viagra anytime they want. As for BC, they can cross their legs. Simple. Cheap. Effective.
FISA passed by overwhelming margins in both the House and the Senate. President Bush is correct on wanting this bill, and Congress proved it to him with a solid vote. America is safer today because of this vote.
Carly, and McCain are not out of sync.

They're both stepping all over his murky messsage.
Clinton supporters take note, when you pout and say you will vote for mccain rather than obama you should ask yourself what else besides color do you have in commmon with mccain?
Carly carly carly...you were a miserable failure of a CEO because facts caught up to your carefully crafted persona and now you don't even know your candidates positions...too funny man
of course mccant does not remember how he voted, most senile people don't remember much only what they day dream about.
Carly Fiorina needs more than just "some" criticism. Here we go again, MSNBC. The pass you seem to willingly give McFossil is very interesting to all of us and NOW you extend it to Fiorina. McFossil clearly has a voting record of voting AGAINST woman's rights (which is why ANY woman that will vote for him is still a mystery to me. It's no secret. Look up his record if you truly want to be an informed voter and not just casting a vote out of anger. His website also states that he intends to appoint judges to the Supreme Court (if elected) to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Now, my younger sisters here have NO idea what will happen if this comes about since they haven't had to worry about that because a woman's right to choose has always been there for them. But I remember woman having illegal abortions and not living to tell about it, so we can't allow this to happen. It will set woman's rights BACK 100 years. McFossil is NOT the candidate for any woman in this election. The choice SHOULD be very clear. Obama '08
How can Obama run an attack ad claiming that 'McCain has been in the Senate for 26 years so is therefore part of the problem' and then potentially pick Biden as VP.  Biden has been in the Senate longer than McCain?  Doesn't that make him a little hypocritical?  This is a sincere question, so if someone could answer it w/a minimum of vitriol or snide comments about McCain it would be appreciated.  Thank you.

And men can keep it in their pants just as cheaply and effectively. Why should we subsidize a man's erection?
Carly Fiorina should be ashamed of herself for backing McCain. She has power, did she get where she is by her business abilities or by sleeping her way to the top? If she slept her way to the top then of course she owes men for her position, BUT if she got where she is professionally because she worked hard for it than she should realize that men like McCain are the reason she had to work twice as hard to achieve her goals. She is a traitor to all women.
Way to win those women over, John-boy!  You can bet Ms. Fiorina is off the short list now...
Mccain remarried to be rich, and Crist is marrying to increase his chances of being chosen for Veep.  Don't Repiglicans marry for love anymore? Or is it all about money and power for them?
