McCain: Social security a 'disgrace'?

Posted: Thursday, July 10, 2008 9:16 AM by Domenico Montanaro

AP reports: “Like many other politicians, McCain often questions the long-term viability of the government retirement program. But he raised eyebrows with an unusually harsh assessment Monday at a town-hall forum in Denver. Asked by a young woman if she is likely to receive Social Security benefits someday, McCain said it was unlikely ‘unless we fix it.’”

More: “‘Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today,’ he said. ‘And that's a disgrace. It's an absolute disgrace, and it's got to be fixed.’”

“Speaking to reporters on his campaign bus Wednesday in Ohio, McCain went into greater detail. Young workers, he said, ‘are paying into a system that they won't receive benefits from on the present track that it's on. That's the point. I don't think it's fair. I think it's terrible.’ ‘That's why we have to fix it,’ McCain said, pointing to a 1983 bipartisan agreement that bolstered Social Security for a while by cutting benefits and raising taxes.”

The Washington Post adds, "John McCain once said economics was not his strong suit. Well, today, Social Security became a problem for the presumptive Republican nominee, too… If that payment system is a disgrace, it has been one since Social Security was created during the Great Depression. For as long as the popular program has existed, today's workers have paid the benefits of today's retirees… Reaction to McCain's statement has been slow to burble, but it is beginning to burst."

McCain is known for bus rides where he will happily chat about anything. But one question posed Wednesday afternoon on the Straight Talk Express made McCain clearly uncomfortable, NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger reports. Maeve Reston of the Los Angeles Times -- the pool reporter on the bus -- asked McCain about comments adviser Carly Fiorina made earlier this week, calling it unfair that insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control.

"I certainly do not want to discuss that issue," McCain said to nervous laughter, according to the pool report. He went on to say he did not know what he voted for on the issue. "I'll look at my voting record on it," he said, before an extended pause. "I don't recall the vote right now. But I'll be glad to look at it and get back to you as to why." Pressed by Reston whether it was fair that some insurance companies cover the erectile dysfunction medication but not birth control, he gave another long pause, clocked at eight seconds.

"I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer because I don't recall the vote, I've cast thousands of votes in the Senate," he said. Reston went on to describe it as a "delicate issue," to more laughter, this time described in the pool report as "relieved laughter."

"It's something that I had not thought much about and I did hear about her response but I hadn't thought much," McCain said. "But I will get, I will get back to you today on it.

"I don't usually duck an issue, but I'm, I'll try to get back to you," he said.

finally, a story of one of McCain's gaffes.  This shows McCain as an elitist if he believes social security is a disgrace. I wonder why he does not say this to the seniors in Fl or any part of the country who depends on that money for survival. He is truly out of touch.
So McCain is saying he will raise taxes?  Let's see if ANYONE in the press challenges him on that.
Maybe McSame should give up his social security check, after all he certainly doesn't need it with his wife's millions and his navy retirement check also. If he feels that strongly about the issue, he should send the check back or just donate it to charity. This just proves out of touch he is, he has no concept of a senior trying to survive by making a choice between food or buying the required medication to stay alive on a small social security check.
Umm, John, that's because that's the way the SS system was set up.  Each generation has paid for their parents and grandparents minimal retirement.

If the budget had remained properly balanced (or we had listened to Al Gore on the "lockbox" instead of laughing at him), it would have remained workable for a long time to come.  It is still fixable.

So what do you say to boomers who have been paying in for the past 40 years -- sorry, you're SOL, all that 40 years of deductions from your pay was for nothing?    Good grief.
So McCain is suggesting that he will raise taxes to support the Social Security System?  Any of you journalists going to ask him that?
If the press is not going to scrutinize McCain as they do Obama, what chance does Obama have?

Last night on Countdown I watched a Vet call McCain on his lack of support for the GI Bill. But Americans who watched the president, believe McCain somehow helped author the bill. So far this morning I've seen nothing about that. Instead we're hearing about Jackson's nuts comments? How's that a political issue?

It's like the press feels sorry for McCain, like he's their gramps, so they leave him alone.
Great memory Mr. John McCain, Is it because of yor age or is it because you did not vote for this issue. Is this just another time you felt that womens needs are insignificant, thus not worth your time to get involved in it?????? Not worth your time to go to vote?????? You are the reason women had to burn their bras in the sixties, you are a  "MALE CHAUVINIST PIG" and soooo against womens rights. That you were elected at all is proof that the current government is ANTI womens equality. You should be removed from the government, and any woman who supports you should hang their head in shame.
How can a person as stupid as John McCain receive even 1 vote. See - his stupid and ill conceived jokes about killing Iranian civilains with cigarettes; bomb bomb Iran.....

See his total lack of caring about children's healthcare and veteran's benefits. His total lack of understanding about how Social Security works, and has been working since its inception. His total lack of caring as shown by his being against insuring people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as his own skin cancer).

He even is ripping off the government and the people of Arizona by not ever showing up to vote in the Senate. He should be kicked out of the Senate.

He apparantly thinks its better to be a tool of the right wing Oh! I'm very sorry - but he was a POW (snark)!
YOu see the Viet Vet pound McCain yesterday on his veteran voting record?  The man had his stats according to the VFW and others that McCain had voted AGAINST veterans' benefits going clear back to 05.  In response to his quieries, McCain had the audacity to claim the GI Bill as his and Lindsey's own---------dudes, he didn't even deem it necessry to show up on the Senate floor to vote on it, not to mention the fact he had voiced opposition to it on camera and in print.  THis old man is a joke.  And something else-----you could tell the brittle ole dude was 1 degree below boiling when this vet kept up the tough questions---he answered it with somethng condescendingly like  [I'll be sure to tell them there's something they don't know that you do], or something like that.  A no holds barred disgrace
Hello angry Hillary seniors. Are you ready for the return of the days when seniors were reduced to having to eat dog food in order to survive? Pull yourselves together folks.

Carly, McCain and Viagra; trounces Michelle, earrings, and a stimulus check all day baby!
I liked that Barack Obama suggests eliminating income tax for seniors who make less than 50,000 dollars per year.  I see a lot more respectful treatment of our elders from the left right now than from the right.

My mom recently had to find healthcare for the 6 months between when my dad retired and when she qualified for Medicare... It's costing her more than a thousand dollars a month.  That's criminal.

I pointed out that John McCain has no plan to help her, but Barack Obama does.  She voted for McCain in the NH primary... but statements like this and his lack of leadership on issues are really starting to make her ask some tough questions.

Don't tick off my mom, McCain!!!
McCain is disrespectful of all things female. He needs to go back to his cave and stay there. Women wake up he will put women back to the 1800's. Plus his memory is terrible, he can not remember what votes he cast. He needs to have his hand held at all times. He is NOT presidential, he has NO leadership ability.
I recommend that everyone marry a rich spouse like mccain
McCain -- Asked by a young woman if she is likely to receive Social Security benefits someday, McCain said it was unlikely ‘unless we fix it.’”

This is regarded as 'harsh'? SS is a giant Ponzi scheme whose demise has already been forcast. And McCain gets the 'harsh' label for stating the fact?

I guess McCain could give flower speeches like Obama does and not tell the grim truth about these things until its too late. Just like with Obama, it's all about living for the moment and feeling good.
This headline sums it up:

McCain is a disgrace.  Not even minimally competent on big or small issues.  And, quite frankly, not funny as a 'jokester', either.  Tell me again why he won the nomination?

PS.  Pete, Albany, NY - that was hysterical yesterday - I promise I had no idea.  I missed that article by two hours.  I laughed out loud.
The fact that McCain does not know how Social Security is funded is absolutely egregious!  There has been no recent shift in how Social Security is funded.  It has been funded by current payroll taxes since benefits were first issued in 1936.  The fact that McCain does not understand this is something that cannot be excused or "found to be cute".  It just shows that he is incompetent to be President.
Gee, Mcbrainless said something stupid. That's never happened before, has it?
Finally, a wee negative story on McCain. McCain is THE KING OF FLIP FLOP! He's flipped on bills he's written. Ask him a question about how he voted on something, he has to get back to you, after he checks the record because he's flipped so many times he can't remember, he's confused! Now he's taking credit for the GI Bill which took a lot of arm twisting to get him to sign, and now he's slamming Webb on top of it all, I would say that's a story worth checking out! McCain just has to mention he thinks Obama has flipped on something, and MSNB-FOX devotes it's whole morning show talking about it. Obama has always said compromise is necessary. He has always said he would be as careful getting out of Iraq, as McBush was careless getting in! He has maintained that Afghanistan, and other areas in the region, and conditions would be taken into consideration! That's not a flip! Futhermore, if Obama has to move a little center to win, I say go for it, after all we can't make any changes - unless he wins. McCain was on his way to the center, but he got lost after that sharp right, nobody left a trail of bread crumbs out for him to follow. So Obama has block McBush's  next move! After almost 8 years of eating Bush's cow pies, I don't want another 4 (or is it 8 now) years of MAC-DITTO cow pies. MSN - please do some stories on all of McCains FLIPS, and the gall of him now trying to take credit for the GI bill, that's a national disgrace! A lot of buzz around about how one sided you guys have been, do the McCain's own stock - or what? Obama has Fox Bashing him 24/7, however, most people thought you guys had higher standards!

OBAMA 08
McFuddles at it again ? The disgrace is that he is the Repubicons nominee. He is crude at best. I guess he could not answer the question because Liberman was not close enough to whisper the answer in his ear. Or was it that he had to go find out what G W Bush had done first .
Will the real John McCain please stand up...
How many times has John McCain said, "This is something I hadn't really thought much about."?  How many of these issues has he voted on? Why elect a leader who thinks so little about the issues facing our country, not only today but in all his years in the Senate?
Rich is getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
Frnakie from 9:49, the facts are the facts my friend.
McCain has said he wants to privatize it (in 2004) then says in 2008 he doesn't want to privatize it. Although, what he wants now is basically privatization. He just doesn't use those words in his definition.
When Dems say, “McCain, you want to privatize Social Security” McCain responds, “No I don’t, I just want people to have private accounts with money that used to go into the Social Security system.”

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/15863.html

And sorry, but McCain has NO record of championing women's rights, at least if you go by:

his opposition to 2005 budget amendment which was to help reduce teen opregnancy thru education and birth control OR

his oppositon to a woman's right to choose, he has said since 2007 that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.
And that's not to say women should have an abortion. But, at least let them choose how to handle a pregnancy that they in no way planned. Adoption is one way, not the only way.  OR

McCain's opposition to the Ledbetter Act which would have overturned the Supreme Court's decision to restrict a woman's right to sue for paycheck discrimination.

So, with this as a small sample of his track record, I'm hoping some McCain supporters can show how he does champion woman's rights.  His history does not show it.
Why don't we vote to take all the ploiticians and government workers of their private pension plan that we pay for and put them on social security.
You'll the system get fixed very quickly.
McCain may be senile and some of his comments, etc show it.  What Republicans fail to realize or don't care about is that if you stopped Social Security or cut its benefits, it would impact the nation's rural areas and inner cities in a catastrophic blow.   For these areas, the only new money coming in is the Social Security checks.   Without this money many, if not most, banks and other businesses in small rural towns would just vanish.
Social Security is a disgrace. It always has been set up incorrectly. Social Security was set up to a supplement to one's retirement, not their entire retirement. People have forgot how to save, they need plan for their own futures, not rely on the government to take care of them. That in itself is reason enough to save on your own. We just keep putting people on welfare, giving them more, taxing the rest of us at higher rates, and then getting them to vote for a liberal, because he is going to give them more from the wealthy, middle class. Rich people hide their money, they don't pay taxes.
I remember years ago when McCain first became a Senator he made a comment on one of the talk shows about how SS was fine that the Gov. was lying to the American People and always trying to borrow from it, well was he lying?
One needs to go back to the original SS act and stick with it.  SS fund should NOT be in the general fund, if you did not pay into it you get NOTHING out of it and SS funds are for RETIREMENT and nothing else.  The current system is nothing short of welfare as anyone can collect benefits.
McCain is a sorry a** just like Obama and the rest of these freaking senators running for prez! I've never seen such a horrible couple of runners for the job.. Obama is getting so much support from African American voters that he pretty much is going to win this one hands down even though he hasn't been able to answer one question about how he can do it as president! African Americans never gave this much of a crap about any president ever untill now.. and they call us the racist's!! McCain only has a chance because he has the rich voters and the racist's going for him! WE ARE ALL DOOMED!
