McCain adviser: 'Nation of whiners'

Posted: Thursday, July 10, 2008 10:46 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Did Phil Gramm just lose his surrogate privileges?

In an interview with the Washington Times, the McCain economic adviser downplayed the economy -- despite it having been the top issue of concern to voters in public polling for months. Gramm goes so far as to call the economy a "mental recession," says that "We have sort of become a nation of whiners" and blames much of the hand-wringing on the perpetual scapegoat -- the media.

The technical definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth. That has not happened yet, but with the housing foreclosure crisis, a slowed housing market, decreased retail spending, rising gas and food prices and a declining stock market, Americans in many parts of the country have hit a tipping point and in most other parts are close to one.

Both Obama and McCain have fought to "connect" with voters on the economy, offering a variety of proposals and devoting significant chunks of time, focusing on the topic at speeches and town halls. McCain devoted this week to the economy but in a speech this week called it "slowing," instead of "slowed," has used the word "psychological" to describe the country's "problems" and has shied away from using the "R" word.

The Democratic National Committee jumped all over the quotes and sent out this response: "What John McCain, George Bush Phil Gramm just don't understand is that the American people aren't whining about the state of the economy, they are suffering under the weight of it -- the weight of eight years of Bush-enomics that John McCain and Phil Gramm have vowed to continue," DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney said. "How dare John McCain and his advisers so callously dismiss the challenges the American people face. no wonder voters feel John McCain is out of touch, he and his campaign don't even understand the everyday issues Americans are dealing with."

GRAMM'S QUOTES FROM THE WASHINGTON TIMES: " 'You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,' [Gramm] said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. 'We may have a recession; we haven't had one yet.'

" 'We have sort of become a nation of whiners,' he said. 'You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline' despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

" 'We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today,' he said. 'We have benefited greatly' from the globalization of the economy in the last 30 years.

"Mr. Gramm said the constant drubbing of the media on the economy's problems is one reason people have lost confidence. Various surveys show that consumer confidence has fallen precipitously this year to the lowest levels in two to three decades, with most analysts attributing that to record high gasoline prices over $4 a gallon and big drops in the value of homes, which are consumers' biggest assets.

" 'Misery sells newspapers,' Mr. Gramm said. 'Thank God the economy is not as bad as you read in the newspaper every day.'"

*** UPDATE *** A McCain official tells First Read: "Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views. John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage. That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."

*** UPDATE 2 *** The Obama campaign is pushing the issue now: “One of Senator McCain’s top economic advisors may think that when people are struggling with lost jobs, stagnant wages, and the rising costs of everything from gas to groceries, it’s merely a ‘mental recession’. And Senator McCain may think it’s sufficient to offer energy proposals that he admits will have mainly ‘psychological’ benefits. But the American people know that our economic problems aren’t just in their heads. They don’t need psychological relief -- they need real relief -- and that’s what Barack Obama will provide as President,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton writes.

NEWS IS NEWS....GOOD BAD OR INDIFFERENT...NEWS IS NEWS. I FOR ONE WILL NOT COMPLIAN THAT BARACK'S NAME IS ALWAYS IN THE NEWS....CANT YOU GUYS SEE THAT THIS IS TRULY A MOVEMENT, YOU CANT STOP A MOVEMENT. BARACK CAN NEVER MAKE ALL OF US HAPPY, BUT IF HE MAKES YOUR SPOUSE, FRIEND OR COWORKER HAPPY, THEY WILL WORK ON YOU AND THE MOVEMENT CONTINUES...
Phil was wrong about 'Nation of whiners' statement. He meant to say the Democrats are whiners.
Oh good.  More from Phil Gram.  Let's see, his wife was involved in the California power outage crisis, and isn't he involved in the predatory lending that is causing families to lose their homes?

Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Just the man to speak for the rest of us.
Yup you whiners, go ahead folks hold your nose and vote McCain if you want another war - in Iran - if you want to destroy Social Security, if you want to further our great economy on its current course, if you want to increase our oil dependence, if you want to maintian America's high esteem in the world, if you want to continue farming our jobs overseas, ....Boy, if you liked Bush, you're gonna love John McCain.
How many times are we Americans going to be insulted by the Republicans?  And who in their right mind will vote for these people?
This boggles my mind. They do not care about us Americans.

We love this country—why don't the Republicans love us back??

And yet they are enjoying the comfort and benefits that we Democrats have afforded them by making living better.
'You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,' [Gramm] said

The growth he speaks of is not 'trickling' down.  And the only one who is mental is his buddy, McCain.

Of course, we know who Gramm is actually speaking to.  The 1% of Americans who have actually benefitted from the existing policies.  What Bush used to call, "...his base..." (see Fahrenheit 911 - to catch that one).

These people sicken me.  They are callous and unfeeling.
I guess now we'll see if the media is biased or not.  Had an Obama surrogate made similar comments to those of Gramm, this would have been in 80-point font on every website known to man.  The headline would of course have been something to do with Obama being elitist.
The true whiners are the Democrats and the Obama supporters. The party of 'It's always someone elses fault'.

If you don't feel you have and personal responsibility for any of your bad decisions in life - you're probably a Democrat.
PS.  my earlier post to First Read never hit - so here is a copy:

Okay, this was an interesting discussion I had last night with my husband's boss - a devout Catholic and long time Republican.  He is so anti-McCain that he is voting for Obama (I know many of you don't believe me when I say this-but here in the heartland there are SO many).  Here's his logic:

He perceives Obama as at least Competent (does not believe that about McCain), so feels that at least Obama won't drive the country over a cliff.  He further believes that in four years the "silent majority - Religious Right -whatever they want to call themselves" will be disatisfied with the Liberal tilt of the country and will be able to regain control of at least the house and by then they may have an actual, competent Right wing candidate.

I guess if I flip that around to the disgruntled Hillary supporters, I can at least empathize a little better with Bobbi and Maca.  Of course, I don't agree with them.

I believe Obama is a very principled, intelligent candidate who also happens to mirror most of my values.  I feel blessed this election; but I can understand better why the Repubs are less united, much more today than I did yesterday.
Whiners? I guess coming from the McSame campaign this is no surprise. McCain has not pumped his own gas and really can't understand having trouble paying for grocery bills when he has 7 houses.

Although he does seem to have trouble paying his taxes on the 6th one.

What is really sad is that people that feel this pain the most may actually vote for him.

OH My GOD!! This is a much bigger story than Jesse Jackson!!

Phil Graham is saying oil going from $20 a barrel to $150 a barrel over the course of the Bush Presidency is OK!!?? And he's tying this to the governments bogus definition of a recession!! MIND BOGGLING!! It seems that McCain is not the only senile one in the McCain Campaign!!

If we vote the Republicans back into office we will get exactly what we deserve!! NOTHING!!
That's exactly how most people should view Senator McFossil............He's just having a little "mental recession" today and FORGOT to vote on the Medicare bill that would have helped the senior citizens he's out pandering to today. Tomorrow he plans on attacking Iran. Have a nice day, folks! Can the Republicans make it ANY clearer this year????? The country needs a CHANGE and we need it NOW. Obama '08!
The GOP gets bad marks on the economy when people size up it's commitment to solving the economic crisis and now this... http://www.enewsreference.com
Is this the same Graham who lined his pockets with UBS $ and helped create the current mortgage mess by allowing wall street to get into the banking business?
This guy belongs in prison for the massive fraud he perpetrated on the American people.
How can anyone expect people who are richer than God to understand or feel anything for people who are strggling just to keep from going down the crapper, even though they have two incomes and are working their tails off? Of COURSE Mcbraindead is out of touch with the poor and middle-class! His trophy wife is a multimillionare! Why do we expect these people to give a rat's ass about us every election cycle? Are we REALLY that stupid, America?
This is not surprising. The Republicans basically just don't want to pay taxes - ever. As long as they don't have to pay taxes, everything else is irrelevant.

No healthcare? If you took better care of yourself, you woudn't have gotten sick. If you saved more money, you could pay for that $10,000 operation.

Rising gas prices? The oil companies have to pay for "research".

No jobs? You're not looking hard enough - pull harder on those bootstraps.

They want the government out of their pockets and in everyone else's bed. What an awesome governing principle - see how well it's working?
WOW, So to all those disinfranchised Hillary-Supporters.....Make sure you vote for McCain!

These remarks fit right in with what Hillary believes...RIGHT??????  I DIDN'T THINK SO!!!

PUMA is just a "Nation of Whiners"
Phil Gramm the man who helped create the housing crisis!! I love when the McCain camp opens up their mouths, they are the gift that just keeps giving. Here in Michigan and places like Ohio, IN, and PA had no idea that if we just stopped whining it would all be ok..
This is one time the media is not at fault. We got eyes and ears.

Rebublicans are the whiners and the liars.
I've "whipped" MSNBC enough for one day, so back to politics and issues.  Why would grim Phil Gramm say these these things.  Because he was/is instrumental in causing much of the country's economic woos. Give Phil his fair credit for the mortgage market collapse. Give Phil his fair credit for creating the Enron loophole.  So what is a good politican to do?  Blame the media.  The media should not be blamed for the economy.  If we are casting credit.  How about Bush, Gramm, McOld,  Republicans who voted for the Enron loophole.
A Financial analyst on 'Joe', last week said that another indicator of a recession is when unemployment figures pass 400,000. He reported that we have passed that figure. It was during the 4th of July weekend, and hasn't found traction with the media's selective reporting.
"'Misery sells newspapers,' Mr. Gramm said. 'Thank God the economy is not as bad as you read in the newspaper every day.'"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

...says the WEALTHY person who doesn't have any problems paying his bills every month. This really is unbelievable, and it reveals how truly out of touch McCain and his campaign really are with the American people. McCain also recently talked about how many of our problems are just "psychological" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_gyHaMuWLo). And he even admitted that his gas tax "holiday" did nothing more than serve as a psychological boost to people.

Anyone who makes less than $200,000/year and votes for McCain is casting a vote against their own economic interests.
Uhhh... correct me if I am wrong, because i am not a religious scholar like yourself, but didn't Christ say to help the poor, not write them off like dog meat?

Is it really any wonder so many Americans have become disillusioned with institutionalized religion when pricks like this guy represent it?
Democrats don't like to be called whiners. The truth cuts deep on them.
Let's see if this story gets more play than Jesse Jackson's 'nuts' comment.

Whining! Are you kidding me? I'm not whining. Personally, I'm faced with having to work two jobs for another year to pay my debts and maybe, just maybe, have some disposable income. But I'm not whining. Each week I have to sacrifice at the grocery store with my refridgerator being bare more often than even 1/2 full. But I'm not whining. Each week I have to tell my young son he can't have something or we can't go somewhere because I can't spare the money.

But I'm not whining. I'm pissed off!

If the MSM gives the McCain camp another free pass on this, we need to stand up against the MSM and DEMAND fair and equal coverage of BOTH camps!

MSM stop the free passes and the non-story stories! The founding fathers of your industry, including Mr. Russert, are turning in their graves!
What drugs is this guy on???
This should be a headline today! This is precisely what the American people need to know, that "fat cats" like Gramm are running and advising the Republican candidate. Americans are not whinnning, just watching their money dwindle in their money market accounts, as they struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet. This in not just about low income Americans, this is about all Americans. Make this story a "Headline" in the news today, instead of nonsense headlines like Obama forgetting to ask for contributions for Hillary.
I came across my old budget book last week, a book where I kept grocery receipts - can't believe how much cheaper food was ten years ago. Food prices have gone up, yet my salary has remained the same. Well, I'm better off than I would be in Nigeria, I suppose. I'll try not to whine, but, gee, the 1990's were nice.
How dare John McCain say I'm whining when it costs me 60 dollars to fill my gas tank to go to work. I guess I just imagined the incredibly high price.
Who is the elitist?  Oh yeah, Obama.
Republicans always see a brighter future for our country. Democrats only see misery. Is it any wonder what type of people are always happier?
It's called whistleblowing Mr. Gramm...if anyone shouldn't talk it's you.  You helped create the credit loopholes that sent the financial sector in a tizzy and opened up the practice of predatory lending.

Talk about elitist, this guy is talking from a soapbox located on his pile of money from the country he sold out, shouting "what's all the fuss?" while people are having to choose between being able to drive to work and going hungry.

This guy needs to be gagged, thrown in a dark hole, and forgotten about.
OMG - This is an absolutely abomination to the suffering and struggles of the average American.

To call U.S. whiners is the most out of touch remark anyone could have made.   It’s obvious now more than ever that John McCain and the Republican Party are extremely out of touch with America.

Should we be Sorry Grahmm, that 98% Americans are not millionaires or billionaires...are we whiners because we can’t monopolize the market and profit from it.

Oh I see we are the little people and our only role in America is to work harder..To take on two or three jobs and just gave the money to people like you and then shut up and be happy.

Shame on the GOP and John McCain they have no shame

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

When's the last time Gramm was facing homelessness, or wondered when his family would eat next?  Thanks to him, and his cronies, many are in that boat, but he sure padded his nestegg.  Desperate people aren't checking their thesauras for the best word to describe the economy!!!

Too bad we can't outsource some of our politicians and their advisors.
I think McShame is in a mental recession!
It is obvious that Mr. Gramm is not middle class. Not only doesn't McCain has a clue, but his advisors are clueless too.  Lord help us if John McCain become president.  Whiners.......boy are the REPs out of touch.......do people have to start jumping out of windows and shooting their brains out for them to listen?
Clueless people just don't have to care...
Pandering to us is bad policy...
McClueless will still need Bush's base to align with....   whinning McNasty off Bush is not going to happen... We'll see the McTemper soon?
these guys need to get out more, mccain and gramm have never wanted for anything, never had to live on a budget, pay their own bills, work for a living, fill their vehicle with fuel, fight with the insurance company over medical expenses, worry about when they get too old to work, pay their fair share of taxes, their perceived economy is not the same economy 95% of americans deal with on a daily basis, and they obviously like it that way.
WOW!

THE REPUGS ARE AT IT AGAIN!

GO AHEAD...DISMISS THE PAINS OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC

THAT WILL SURELY GET YOU TICKET BACK TO THE SENATE!

WHAT IDIOTS!
The entire McCain campaign is OLD and out of touch with reality. Senator McCain was asked a question by a reporter yesterday why does Medicare pay for Viagra and not birth control pills. He is so OLD an oldfashioned that he took 10 seconds before he could even come up with an answer. He is still back in the sixties. We can not afford to have him anywhere near the Whitehouse.
