Obama on women, economics, Gramm

Posted: Thursday, July 10, 2008 5:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones and NBC’s Katie Mulhall
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Obama said McCain and one of his top economic advisers believed America’s economic problems were a “figment” of voters’ imagination.

At a town hall focused on economic security for women, the Illinois senator said McCain’s record on the economic issues that matter most to women showed he would not bring change, in part because he believed the Bush administration’s economic record had meant “great progress” for the economy.

VIDEO: Presumptive presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain respond to comments made by a McCain advisor, Phil Gramm, who said the U.S. has become a "nation of whiners." NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Obama went on to criticize former Sen. Phil Gramm for saying the country was merely in a "mental recession."

"He didn’t say this, but I guess what he meant was that it's a figment of your imagination -- these high gas prices," Obama said to laughter and jeers from the crowd. "This comes after Sen. McCain recently admitted that his energy proposals for the gas tax holiday and the drilling will have mainly quote psychological benefits."

Gramm’s comments, which McCain has rejected, played into Obama’s argument that his rival not only does not understand the economy, but that he is out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans. He sought to drive that point home with a long riff on some of the problems facing struggling families. (See prepared remarks.)

It was Obama's second event today focused on women. Michelle Obama has also been on the campaign trail focusing on issues of importance to women in the battleground states if Missouri today and Michigan yesterday.

The presumptive Democratic nominee announced no new policy during his speech, but framed his already announced proposals -- from a $1,000 middle class tax cut to expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit -- in terms of how they would help women. He said that unlike McCain he would make sure the minimum wage rises yearly to keep up with inflation and he would be a partner with unions.

Obama hit McCain on equal pay, saying that McCain "suggested women need more education and training" to achieve parity in compensation, when in reality "the problem is that women aren't being treated fairly."

He tied his proposals on women and the economy to the theme of family values, noting that "When women 70 cents for every dollar men make, it doesn't just hurt women, it hurts families." He pushed for paid family and sick leave, because "I think we can all agree that taking care of our children and caring for our loved ones is the most important job we have."  More: "If you're sick, you should be able to get a day off" and "look after your children if they get sick."

On equal pay, McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds writes, “On issue after issue, Barack Obama has shown that he is prone to intentionally using words and making comments that are at odds with his own record. One report begs the question, are women outnumbered and out-paid by men in Barack Obama’s own Senate office?”

On FISA and the national debt: Obama spoke for about 35 minutes before taking questions on a series of topics, from why he would be better for Latinos to his thoughts on writing.

At one point he was challenged for supporting the new FISA bill. He said he had voted against the original version of the bill that would have given the Bush administration, which he said had clearly gone around the FISA court, as well as the phone companies "a clean bill of health," but voted for the new bill, even though it was imperfect, because the surveillance program was important to national security.

He used a question on the national debt to attack McCain for suggesting he could balance the budget by 2013.

“I wanna go ahead and tell you the truth which is we will not eliminate the deficit or the national debt in the next four years or even in the next eight years," he said. "John McCain put out a plan suggesting that he was gonna eliminate the deficit by 2013, in five years, and people looked at it and they started hooting and hollering and laughing because it just wasn’t true."

Obama received some of his loudest applause addressing No Child Left Behind, answering that the way to provide better education "is not just by applying a single high-stake standardized tests." He said that the law "has led to counterproductive behavior. Teachers teach to the test," and "it doesn't inspire students."  He did add that "it doesn't mean our kids can't take a standardized test once and a while, it just means it has to be supplemented" by other kinds of learning.

He also answered a question on the importance of writing in his life, and stressed the importance of good writing skills in the job market: "these days kids know how to text message…but when you are applying for a job they will not be asking if you know how to text message." He also revealed that "over the course of the last four years I made time to read all of the Harry Potter books out loud to my daughters."

His other biggest applause line came when he discussed foreign policy, emphasizing again the need for a return to diplomacy in our foreign policy, and "promising restore relationships and alliances," adding "there's nothing 'soft' about that."

Barak, Give John a break. He has finished Chapt. 1 of Econ. 101, has taken Lieberman's true false test and is waiting for his score. He has taken a peek at Chapt 2, without anyone helping at this time. Barak, that is progress!

Dennis Kucinich now reading Impeachment bill in the house.
My goodness! What a wonderful candidate we have!

The difference between Senators Obama, and McCain is a rusty can of beans, versus a meal prepared by an Iron Chef!
Obama has had a pretty good day today. Still, I won't forget his vote on FISA. OR his lame excuse of an answer he offered at that town hall meeting in Virginia. Still, considering the alternative...
So did Michelle mention, as she did yesterday, that the stimulus check was nothing more than a $600 pair of earrings to her?  And, while she discounted the stimulus, I guess she forgot that her husband is promising another.  Oh boy, she can get more earrings!  Bet they won't be red, white and blue!
Can you say, "OOOOPS"?
It's Obama that doesn't have a clue about the enonomy. The economy depends on people that work hard and manage risk well; two things Obama wants to take away from Americans through regulations and legislated benefits.
So, Barack Obama disagrees with Ted Kennedy on the No Child Left Behind bill? The bill that Ted put so much effort into. What bills has Obama ever worked on to improve education? The answer to that is none.
Issues...   How about a National Televised Debate...with internet, telephone Q&A..No Media bias questions from different parts of the nation ...every Friday night until the election....If we scream loud enough we'll get a weekly debate.....One topic per week lasting one hour..
First debate Economy / gasoline and food,
second debate Homeland Security/ Fisa,
third debate Iraq/Iran/ war foreign policy,
fourth debate Healthcare/ jobs,
fifth debate Energy,
sixth debate Borders/ Immigration...etc
Congressional races also made news today, as the GOP got a surprising and rare collection of good news from races in Louisiana and Illinois. Full roundup: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/07/10/congressional-diary-some-rare-good-news-for-the-gop/
Liberals think FISA is a tax taken out of their paychecks. They'll never figure out its a bill President Bush wanted passed, and that Obama voted for to help out Bush.
Try as he might, B. Hussein Obama can't get over the fact that older working woman can't stand the mans guts, and are moving quickly to the McCain camp.
I knew 1st Read would cut off the Phil Grahm thread because way to many comment's were coming in from the Real America, not the one the MSM thinks there is.However now that you've posted a 2nd thread, we'll see how many post get thru the moderater's.

David Gregory & his GOP way of thinking seem's to think that America cares more about jesse than McNothing's Economic advisor calling All of us " Whiner's". No amount of Spin can recify this embarassing(another)gaffe.

The GOP can't keep up with Barack, he's to far down the road for them to even get close to Attack him.

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over!!!!!
Does the McCain camp really need Tucker?  After all, judging by the responses he puts out, any 10 year old can do his job.
Another solid town hall.  I have listened to town halls from both McCain and Obama.  There is a clear difference between the two.  McCain sems to always give the polition answer always perceeded with the phrase of "can I give you a little straight talk".  The statements never seem to offer solutions to the questions.  Never in indebth details but a lot history on things that just don't matter.  Obama seems to not only answer the question but in detail always tied to a common sense approach.  I have been a long time republican but I just can't follow McCain.  I have always felt that the Dems tax to much but for the first time I feel the areas of emprovement that Obama is proposing makes sense.  It may cost more but will it be worth it?
So Barack, please explain your intense knowledge of the economy. The only thing you have proposed so far is more regulations on businesses and tax hikes on every man, woman, and child in the country. Could you explain how any of those will improve the economy? I thought not.
McLame is out of touch with ordinary folks, he's bad for the economy, bad for America and bad for the world.
<<discussed foreign policy, emphasizing again the need for a return to diplomacy in our foreign policy,>>

Obama has obviously been busy, and hasn't heard about North Korea giving up their nuclear program. You know, the one his foreign policy advisor Maddy Albright gave to them back in the '90s. The US and Bush NEGOTIATED that success story.

THE MCCAIN PARADE OF STUPID MARCHES ON.
It's good that the McCain team is coordinating their talking points, as John McCain's been talking about how the problems with the economy, gas prices, energy, et al, and his proposals to solve them, are 'mostly psychological', for months now.

Alternative energy? McCain will harness the power of the subconscious, store it in a science-contest-prize battery, and use it to power your new 'horseless carriage'.

Go McCain!

If you had more money when Bill Clinton was President

Obama same policy more money again.

No tax for you if you make under 250,000

Most american dont make 250,000

If you like the way USA running VOTE McCain

McCain same policy is Bush.

Do you homework  guys

OBAMA have a better police.

IF you dont like him so what vote for a better policy.

THANKS FOR READING.
The voters are gonna wanna in plain unambiguous English which, I believe is our national languge not " street slang " and double speak !
Well-- I'm glad to know that high gas prices and a failing economy was all in my head. Perhaps I should consult with a therapist because it all seems so real.

It's amazing... better yet, stunning that politicians can be so out of touch. Maybe Gramm got a hole of some wacky tabacky, It has to be some reason for him to make a statement like that. Or maybe, he's losing his bearings. What is with McCain and his friends? Are they all suffering with dementia?
Thank you, Lord--
Finally--a public figure that recognizes the idiocy of the "one standard for all" notion of NCLB!

Why don't we act rationally as educators and measure each child's progress against that child's previous year's progress--rather than setting an arbitrary benchmark and calling all those that don't meet it "at risk" or "below standard"--aka LOSERS!

The most egregious issue in NCLB is that schools considered "under performing" are forced into using a skill and drill phonics approach while the suburban districts who perform well are allowed to pursue a critical thinking and constructivist philosophy--further dividing the achievement of children in poverty and those who are more privileged.

YES WE CAN--provide ALL children with a deep and rich curriculum that teaches higher level thinking skills and the ability to problem solve!

Love you, Mr Obama--you get it--finally someone gets it, thank you Jesus!  Equity in Education like Thomas Jefferson envisioned--a core pillar of the philosophy of Democracy.

This I am sure will not get posted, but Chris Todd - you and your team should be ashamed of yourself.  Tim I am sure is turning over in his grave watching the way you are covering this campaign.

The Week That Should Have Ended McCain's Presidential Hopes! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/max-bergmann/the-week-that-should-have_b_111983.html

why is it that you folks never post my comments?  I'm very polite and politically correct!  Is it because I'm Probama?  Puh-lease!
What is so wrong with Obama's support for the compromise of The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Supreme Court's upholding of a citizen's right to bear arms?
I think this is a good position to hold.
If you know your not a terrorist then you don't have anything to worry about.

I hope Barack Obama is our next president......
I'll beleive Obama treats women fairly when he asks Hillary to be on the ticket...
The news media has report on every gaffe or any questionable conduct by Barack Obama and his surrogates as far back as the democratic primary. They are reported on for weeks, when Hillary Clinton and now John McCain are giving a pass. It is beginning to look like it is becoming racially motivated by this type of reporting. Please report on this injustice. I added a report from the Huffington Post to back up my claim.

This article is from the Huffington Post.
During this past week: McCain called the most important entitlement program in the U.S. a disgrace, his top economic adviser called the American people whiners, McCain released an economic plan that no one thought was serious, he flip flopped on Iraq, joked about the deaths of Iranian citizens, and denied making comments that he clearly made -- TWICE. All this and it is not even Friday! Yet watching and reading the mainstream press you would think McCain was having a pretty decent political week, I mean at least Jesse Jackson didn't say anything about him.
But let's unpack McCain's week in a little more detail.
1. McCain unambiguously called Social Security "an absolute disgrace." This is not a quote taken out of context. John McCain called one of the most successful and popular government programs, which uses the tax revenues of current workers to support retirement benefits for the elderly "an absolute disgrace." This is shocking - and if uttered from Obama's mouth would dominate the news coverage and the Sunday shows, as pundits would speculate about the massive damage the statement would cause him among retirees in Florida.
2. McCain's top economic policy adviser calls Americans a bunch of "whiners" for being worried about the slumping economy. Words cannot fully explain how devastating this statement should be from Phil Gramm. You would think it would be enough to sink McCain's campaign. Of course McCain only thinks that the economic problems are psychological.
3. Iraqi leaders call for a timetable for U.S. withdrawal, McCain gets caught in a bizarre denial and flip flop. The Iraqis now want us to begin planning our withdrawal - McCain however wants to stay foooorrreeevvveerrrr. So what does McCain say - First, he refuses to accept Maliki's statement as being true. Then he concedes that it was an accurate statement, but was probably just a political ploy to curry favor with his own people and WOULD NOT influence his determination to keep US troops in Iraq indefinitely. Yet, McCain in 2004 at the Council on Foreign Relations said that if the Iraqis asked us to leave, we would have to go. No matter what. But that was apparently a younger and less experienced John McCain.
But let's just look at his comment that Maliki's statement is "just politics." If that is true, then it must also be true that the American military presence in Iraq is so unpopular with Iraqis that the government is forced to push for a timetable in order to survive at the ballot box. That's a reason to stay for 100 years.
4. McCain's economic plan to cut the deficit has no details and is simply not believable. There are so many things here. McCain pledges he would eliminate the deficit by the end of his
first term (the campaign latter flip flop flipped about whether it was four years or eight years), but does not provide any details about how he would do it. Economists on both sides of the political aisle said that this was simply not believable, especially given McCain's other proposals to a) cut individual and corporate taxes even further, b) extend the Bush tax cuts and c) massively increase defense spending on manpower (200,000 more troops) and d) maintain a long-term sizable military presence in Iraq.

5. McCain's deficit plan includes bringing the troops home represents a major Iraq flip-flop. Speaking of the long-term military presence - a story that has gotten absolutely no attention is that McCain now believes the war will be over soon. The economic forecasts made by his crack team of economists predict that there will be significant savings during McCain's first term because we will have achieved "victory" in Iraq and Afghanistan. The savings from victory (ie the savings from not having our troops there) will then be used to pay down the deficit. The only way this could have any impact on the deficit in McCain's first time is if troop withdrawals start very soon. So McCain believes victory is in our grasps and we can begin withdraw troops from Iraq pretty much right away -- doesn't sound that different from Obama's plan does it. Someone should at least ask McCain HOW HE DEFINES VICTORY - and why he thinks we will achieve it in the next couple of years.
6. McCain campaign misled about economists support. In the major press release the McCain campaign issued to tout its Jobs for America economic plan that would balance the budget in 4 years, it included the signatures of more than 300 economists who the campaign claimed to support the plan. Only problem is that the economists were actually asked to sign up to SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Um, hello?
7. McCain makes a joke about killing Iranians. Haha... that's just McCain being McCain. I am sure that is exactly how it is being reported in Tehran. This guy is running for President not to become a talk radio pundit. Yet according to the AP this was just a humanizing moment between candidate and spouse - I am not sure when joking about the deaths of civilians became humanizing.
8. McCain denies, flatly, that he ever said that he is not an expert in economics. Are you kidding?
9). McCain distorts his record on veterans benefits in response to a question from Vietnam Veteran, who then proceeds to call McCain out on it.
10.) McCain demonstrates he knows nothing about Afghanistan and Pakistan. McCain said "I think if there is some good news, I think that there is a glimmer of improving relationship between Karzai and the Pakistanis." Pat Barry notes how crazy this comment is..."Just what "glimmer" is McCain talking about?? Maybe he's referring to President Karzai's remarks last month, which threatened military action in Pakistan if cross-border attacks persisted? Or maybe McCain is talking about Afghanistan's allegations that Pakistan's ISI was involved in a recent assassination attempt on Karzai? Maybe in McCain's world you could call that a silver-lining, but in reality-land I'd call it something else."
Any one of these incidents and comments would dominate the news cycle if they came from the Obama campaign. Yet McCain barely gets a mention. The press like to see themselves as political referees - neutral observers that call them like they see em'. But they want this to be a horse race and so all the calls right now are going one way. How else can you explain the furor last week over the Obama "refine" comment - which represented zero change in Obama's position on Iraq - and the "swift boat" mania over Wesley Clark's uncontroversial comments (psss... by the way McCain exploits his POW experience in just about every ad - yet he says he doesn't like to talk about it).
This Sunday expect the ten incidents above to get short shrift from pundit after pundit, because after all Jesse Jackson said he wanted to cut Obama's nuts off.
I think McCain will have to do more to convince voters that he understand the economic crisis and his plan is authentic... http://www.enewsreference.com
McCain doesn't really reject Gramm's views.  They have exactly the same views.  Roll the tape...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P6bkbdAkFg
The economic problems are not has bad as some in the media make it out to be for ratings, but it is not doing that well either.

I agree with Obama that its not a "mental recession" but I don't see him doing anything about it either.
He could've voted for Spector's bill.
He could've voted for Dodd's bill.
The Democrats could've voted no and put pressure on Bush for putting the nation in jeopardy, over immunity for telecoms.
There were telecoms that refused to SPY without a warrant.  There legal departments said it was a violation of the constitution.  Does anyone believe the AT&T and Verizon do NOT have legal departments to tell them THIS WAS ILLEGAL?
The Democrats must believe we fellow Democrats are really stupid!  This issue was HUGE among Democrats.
1. Because the when the Democrats took over the Senate they promised many things...that they have not delivered on.  Instead of playing politics, and taking huge amounts of money from telecoms PACS to buy their vote, they should've stuck with their promises of THEY were going to CHANGE things in Washington.  They have sat back and done nothing as the President tramples on our constitutional and civil rights.
The new FISA bills extends until 2012.  Gee, just happens to the year of the next Presidential election.  Do you think the Democrats want to play the same game that Bush has played?  Who can the Dems SPY on without any reason, going around getting a warrant?
I was the biggest Obama supporter, worked on his campaign here in Pennsylvania.  And as anyone who read my posts on here would know.  But this, this FISA bill, that his campaign said..."Do you really think anyone cares about this?" has my HOPE fading.  Obama promised and pledged he would bring CHANGE to WAshington.  He would not accept PAC and Lobbyist money.  Then why does is show he accepted over $200,000, from telecom PACS?  This truly disturbs me!  He lied.  He mislead.  He seems to be the same old, same old.
I am so disgusted with the DEMOCRATS, that today...probably with tears in my eyes...I am switching from DEMOCRAT to INDEPENDENT.  Been a DEMOCRAT for 30 years this year.  And I believe my husband will go with me.
The first test of Obama standing up for change, and he caved in to more of the same...just SHOW ME THE MONEY!  He sold out the American people...by saying he compromised.  B*llsh*t!!!  He didn't compromise...he LIED!  He allowed our government to
SPY on the American people, and instead of finding out what happened, how it happened, and making sure it never happens again...OBAMA SOLD US OUT!  A Constitutional LAWYER, who taught the CONSTITUTION...ALLOWED telecoms and BUSH/CHENEY to suck the life out of DEMOCRACY.  When our constitution no longer means anything...but being a damn piece of paper...we are no longer a democracy.  We will be like communist china and Russia!
THe Democratic Senators who voted for this are COWARDS, OBAMA inbluded!  They do not represent me, or anything I believe in, and I will no longer assocaite myself with a party of CONISTITUTIONAL COWARDS.
"Who really cares about this anyway???"
I DO, as well as many other Democrats I know personally.  The Obama Campaign, and Senator Casey, miscalculated the intelligence of Democrats from Pennsylvania, WHO DO CARE ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION and WHAT PASSING THIS FISA BULL means for the future of our democracy!
Chuck Todd...check the numbers of Democrats that Switch to INDEPENDENT in the next few weeks.
There will be ONE today...ME.  And probably tomorrow...my husband!
I will never vote for McCain, his vote on women's rights and vets, two of the biggest reasons!
But I really Believe I will stay home on November!  And it makes me literally SICK!
