Hillary under VP consideration, but...

Posted: Saturday, July 12, 2008 1:41 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
According to a Hillary donor who recently spoke with Obama, Clinton is definitely on the veep list. But there's one obstacle, Obama told her: Bill Clinton.

The Los Angeles Times writes, "Jill Iscol, a faithful Democratic donor who was an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, said Obama reached out to her because he heard she was unhappy about the way the New York senator had been treated by the Democratic Party and the media. Iscol turned their phone conversation Thursday to the vice presidency -- something the Obama campaign has refused to discuss publicly. She said she told him that Clinton would be his best running mate."

"Obama replied that she is on his list, Iscol recounted, and that it would be a mistake not to have her on such a list. But he also explained that he was thinking through a potential 'complication' -- Bill Clinton. 'He said once you're a president, even if you're a former president, you're always a president,' Iscol said."

I guess Jill Iscol doesn't want an ambassadorship to a nice place like Italy or Greece, eh?
Hillary's supporters are not needed by Obama. He'll have enough votes without them. Those fat old poor white women can go pound salt.
Fox News was very kind in their treatment of Tim Russert. Why no article about Tony Snow?
The problem with Hillary is Bill.  Throughout her public life she has been vetted and scrutinized by special prosecutors, ther media and Congress.  Whatever baggage she has,it's been out there for a time and is well known.

Bill, on the other hand, since leaving office, has taken contributions for his Presidential library from unknown sources with possibly political influence. He has made paid speeches all over the world and has had numerous business dealings and partnerships that may not pass a sniff test with the public.  Some of his former partners are under indictment. I don't think the former President is willing to be vetted which will probably disqualify Hillary from consideration.
GREAT FOR SEN. OBAMA WE DEFINITELY DON'T NEED 3 PRESIDENTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE.  UNFORTUNATELY THE MANNER IN WHICH PRESIDENT CLINTON IS RESPONDING OR NOT RESPONDING PROVES THE POINT.  THIS IS NOT ABOUT HIM OR HILLARY IT'S ABOUT THE COUNTRY.

WE WOULD LOVE FOR PRESIDENT CLINTON TO PROVE the media WRONG AND STAND UP WITH THE PARTY AND GET BUSY CAMPAIGNING
Wow.  Goes to show that Hillary and her top supporters are backstabbers who should not be trusted.  Obama reaches out to this woman and she betrays his trust by leaking to the media things he had told her during the private conversation he never should have wasted his time on the begin with.
Obama is right. In addition, a former First Family with that much baggage, old, and new.......well......?

Their upset supporters, (though more extreme due to the historical nature of their dashed hopes), are a natural occurance of politics.

However, their scandals, and their debt are an unnecessary drag. I hate that Barack has to be bothered with this albatross.

The LA Times also states this about Jill Iscol:
"Along with many Clinton supporters, Iscol is closely watching the Obama campaign to see how it treats Clinton."

Is this how we now pick our presidents? This is sooo ridiculous!! Do they want Obama to bend down and kiss her feet? Just because they were in a close race DOES NOT mean Obama owes her anything, especially after the things she said about him. Everyone talks about the way she was supposedly treated. They forget about what SHE and Bill said and did. I'm so sick of this!
If the conversation with Obama went as Jill Iscol says then it is a shame he was as candid as she indicates, however I rather doubt he made such remarks.  He has played this VP thing very close to the chest.
Hillary Clinton would best serving this nation on the SCOTUS....woman's rights would and still be the champion of her life for more than 4 to 8 years.
A greater good for a longer time ...
Hillary has only herself to blame.

The circumstances that have brought her to political purgatory were decades of shady behavior, and entitlement.

Lastly, she made the miscalculation of her life, as a politician, to have stayed with Bill for political expedience, and advantage. Had she not supported him in his mess, but divorced him, the ticket might well be Clinton/Obama '08.
I'm good with whomever Senator Obama chooses.  After all, he and his team have put a strategy to get him to this time and place, I'm not interested in trying to change the gameplan now.

Having said that, and I'm an avid Obam supporter,
I ask the Hillary Clinton people to not even think about the vetting piece (which is HUGE). Instead, let's role play.

Reporter/Debate moderator: Sen. Clinton, you stated on at leat two occassions that you had the experience and Sen. McCain had the experience to lead the country/be commander-in-chief. You immediately followed that sentence with something to the effect of, but as for Barack, you'll have to ask him what his qualifications are. Or, he gave a speech.
Do you still feel that way now or were you in the throes of just saying something to get elected?

Clinton:  Uh, I can see another McCain and the Viagra question 8 second pause.

I think that the campaign, and Clinton herself, has to have a realistic answer to that question that doesn't make it also seem as if she's saying she was wrong.  Because then, she's saying she had poor judgement which could reflect poorly on Obama for selecting someone with poor judgement.

I've been asking the question for a few days and I'm still waiting for those Former Hillary supporters (I know who you are) to give an honest answer to that (sort of) question.
Ouch! Obama reached out to an unhappy Clinton donor and she bit him. Now all those Obama supporters who want to retire the Clinton debt, raise your hands.
Many Hillaristas do NOT want her as VP. It's an insult. She has a great career in the Senate and she does not want to be VP.

We will work harder in November against an Obama/Clinton ticket than an Obama/anyone. See petition linked from turndownobama.
I think she should be Secretary of Health and Human Services, and given full reign to solve the health care issue.  It's been her baby for years...

Colin Powell for VP... It would be an unbeatable team.
Wow! Is that surprising?  I am sure everyone and his brother knew that Obama could not pick Hillary because of Bill.  I am not a Bill Clinton fan, but I respect him.  He still is the smartest guy in the room and Obama cannot compete with that.
Wow.  Goes to show that Hillary and her top supporters are backstabbers who should not be trusted.  Obama reaches out to this woman and she betrays his trust by leaking to the media things he had told her during the private conversation he never should have wasted his time on the begin with.

**************

I totally agree and that was the difference on how they ran their campaing...One wiith discpline and the ohter like a tabloied
I will NOT vote for Obama - do NOT care who the VP is.
Obama is NOT qualified to lead our country.
Without the MILLIONS of Hillary supporters the only thing obama will Steal is the nomination - NEVER the White House.
Unbelievable that Jill still thinks Hillary was treated unfairly. Hillary Clinton lost because of her record in the Senate, specifically supporting the decision to give W the power to go to war with Iraq. She lost fairly, and for her to act victimized after she was treated just like anyone else in the campaign would be if THEY had voted for the war in Iraq is enough reason not to pick her for VP.  For SIX years of my 34 year life there has been a Clinton or a Bush in the Executive Office (beginning with GHWB as VP in 1980).  ENOUGH with these two disfunctional, polarizing families.  GO AWAY.
SOMETIMES I WONDER WHAT IF THE SHOES WAS ON THE ORTHER FOOT? HILLARY PALYED HERSELF OUT, IF ONLY SHE HAD PULLED OUT EARLIER. BUT THE "GREED" TO GET BACK IN THE WHITE HOUSE CAUSED HER EVERYTHING.

IT'S TIME WE PUT THIS ISSUE TO BED AND FOCUS ON THE BIGGER ISSUES......LIKE MCBUSH AND HIS ADVISERS. NATION OF WHINERS?

Still not listening?  No Obama, Not Now, Not Ever.  Not voting for him even if he holds out the carrot of HRC as VP.  Are You Kidding ME?  hahahahaha  He will discard her as fast as he can when he's done using her.  Why can't people see him for the empty chair that he is?

No Obamanation in the White House, ever!!!

PUMA!
Just Say No Deal!
I DON'T BELIEVE HRC IS ON THE LIST AT ALL HIS EGO AND ARROGANCE WOULDN'T PERMITT IT. HE SAYS WHAT HE HAS TO TO GET MONEY AND VOTES. IF HILLARY IS VP OR NOT BILL WILL STILL BE A FORMER PRESIDENT. EVERY TIME OBAMA OPENS HIS MOUTH ANOTHER LIE COMES OUT. HE REALLY SHOWS HOW MUCH HE CARES FOR THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY BY IGNORING 18,000,000 SUPPORTERS. BILL COULD CARE LESS TO INTERFERE WITH OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY HE'S MAKING MILLIONS ON THE LECTURE CIRCLE AND HAS NO TIME TO WORRY ABOUT OBAMA.AMAZING IF BILL WAS SUCH A PROBLEM WHY IS HE INSISTING HE WANTS BOTH OF THEM CAMPAIGNING FOR HIM
DEMOCRATS FOR McCAIN 2008 HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON 2012
Wow.  Goes to show that Hillary and her top supporters are backstabbers who should not be trusted.  Obama reaches out to this woman and she betrays his trust by leaking to the media things he had told her during the private conversation he never should have wasted his time on the begin with.

Did we read the same article?

Who did Hillary backstab?

Nope, I re-read the piece and my reading comprehension is intact.

Sorry !
It's just not gonna work

Hillary should NOT be Obama's running mate
It's 'oil and water'

Let's move on....

Obama needs a fresh, honest and proressive running mate

John Edwards is my favorite
But, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd and Bill Richardson are also reasonable picks

Sibelius, Napolitano or McCaskill would also be good
(I think)
Wesley Clarke would be OK

Since a running mate serves as an heir apparent, younger is better than older
Someone who could lead our party in 8 years

PUH-LEEEZE !!
No Hillary Clinton,
NO, NO, NO Sam Nunn (war monger)
No Chuck Hagel (decent, but anti-choice)
Sec Defense ? Sec State ?
No Bloomberg (pro-war)

Let Hillary resume her career in the Senate
She can help Obama and Ted Kennedy craft health care legislation
Myabe she can carve out her own niche in the Seante on health care, women's issues, economics ??

As for Bill.... can you say Clinton fatigue ?

ENOUGH with the soap opera
FR's continual flogging of the Clinton - Obama thing sounds like high school gossip
Obama Supporters: Go to Huffington Post and read the front page headline......See what Hillary supporters are up to ...they have alittle surprise for us in Denver.
Re: Ames
Hillary's supporters are not needed by Obama. He'll have enough votes without them. Those fat old poor white women can go pound salt.
------------------------------------------------------
Luckily, you are in the minority of Obama supporters who think in such primitive and narrow minded terms, because he does need a lot of her voters to win.  If everyone thought the way you did, Senator Obama would be in even more trouble because he would have far less support from Hilary voters.
Oh and Obama doesn't need Hillary's supporters?  Hmmm let me see, 17% voting for McCain, 31% staying  home.  By my count that is roughly half the Democratic party.  Wonder how much chance Obama has of winning with half his party voting for his opponent or staying home!  :-) Dream on folks, the shine is off the apple.  Start investing in your tissues, your going to need them.
I could almost accept Hillary but Bill is another story, he clearly will not be controlable.  It's really too bad because, although I have always been an Obama supporter, I think they would make a good team.
I believe as a former president Bill Clinton should not be campaigning and Hillary should not have endorsed Obama but just supported him. However, Obama takes a chance on her voters not voting for him if she is not on the ticket. I don't believe Bill Clinton would interfere if Obama becomes president. He may do speeches if asked but not pertaining to Obama. Just politics. Sometimes you have to take chances to get what you want and Obama wants that presidency. I would like to see an Obama/Clinton ticket because Hillary is well schooled in politics and foreign policy and could be a great help to him. Instead of Obama getting people to search for a VP Hillary is right there. Let's hope it happens. If it does they would be the best team in a long time and I think they could work together and she could be a bit help to him. I would rather think positive than negative.
I am incensed that a Hillary supporter would reveal details of a personal phone call with Obama!!! Why should he ever trust any of them again?  It's bad enough that on Hardball they kept showing the "gaffe" of Obama forgetting to beg for money to pay Hillary's debts. It stinks that Hillary's people believe it is his job to fix their mistakes while trying to win the Presidency in the fall.  Or are they still praying for assasination?

Get real - this election was Hillary's to lose, and she lost it, end of story. There is no reason on God's Earth for Obama to have to be Hillary's "boy" anymore. It's demeaning to him and no other winner in the history of American politics has had to kowtow to the loser this way. Dump the backbiters and shun them at the Convention - no amount of money is worth all this!
If I was Obama I would go ahead of schedule and choose her as a running mate now and not wait. I think he would have a lot of donations coming in especially from Hillary's fundraisers. They are holding back because they stated they want to she what he does for her. And he would get the majority of her supporters. Bill Clinton would not interfere with Obama. He would not want to ruin it for Hillary, in fact, he would be all for it himself.
Go to Huffington Post and see what the Hillary supporters are up to now.....Unbelievable
I really don't understand why rhw Hillary supporters are in denial. Why are they blaming Obama.  He did everything possible not to throw stones while she threw the kitchen sink.  Don't they know we have to win?  It's about womens righ5s, the war, healthcare, the economy, ete, etc.  The good news is Obama is now ahead in Missouri!!  Even my brother who is a moderate Republican sees the need for change!
Meet vp prospect Tim Lame.  Tim needs to stay gov. of Vir.  Obama needs Wesley Clark, or after looking at Obamas Energy Plan.  Maybe Obama needs T Boon Pickens.  If you want to have a say on who the vp is you can sign VP petitions at http://www.VeepPeek.com
if you want to learn more about Obama's energy plan or McCains or T. Boone Pickens you can go to http://www.tboonpickens.com So thats why I think Obama needs Wes Clark or T. Boon Pickens as his VP> Obamas energy plan is kind of lame.
Agree with Jamil.  The Clintons have always been for the Clintons, period, and will attack anyone who gets in their way on either side of the aisle without mercy and regardless of the good of the country.

Hillary supporters need to face the fact that Bill makes it impossible for anyone, ever to choose her as VP. Anyone who would take the risk of having Bill as their VP's spouse would not be a wise choice for President.

For all the good Bill did her in this race, she would have been better off getting an amicable divorce  a few years after getting her Senate seat. They could have just chalked it up to their careers taking them in different directions yadyadayda.  Divorce is no longer an impediment to the Presidency and she would have been an unencumbered free agent while running for president or being considered as VP.
There is no way Senator Clinton could become the VP candidate. I believe former President Clinton has created too much "negative baggage" for her to be an asset to the Obama campaign. I suspect Mr. & Mrs. Clinton realize this but their supporters hasn't.
That is truly unfortunate, the behavior of some of her supporters leave a lot to be desired. That percentage that loudly stated they would vote Republican before voting for Senator Obama were never Democrats in the first place. Like traitorous Senator Joe Lieberman, get out of our party, we don't want you.
Sen Obama doesn't want Sen Hillary Clinton as a running mate, he just wants her donors to write him a big check. He fears being over shadow by Bill Clinton, the last 2 term elected democratic President in a very long time.
I want to on behalf of the millions of Democrats and independents who want the Democrat’s and their pro-worker, pro-middle-class policies to win in November 2008 to move this country to the greatness it deserves by naming Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas as the Democratic VP running mate.  First and most importantly, naming Governor Sebelius a very qualified woman to the ticket will help with bring the women who supported Hillary Clinton strongly back to the Democratic ticket.  I’ve read many bloggers say that women will not support any woman for VP that’s name Clinton.  This is absolutely ridiculous.  Even Senator Clinton would have to cheer naming Gov. Sebelius to the ticket if she is not selected.  Many women who are holding back support for Mr. Obama would quickly move to support Obama and solidify his lead with women.  Women recognize that they were so close to breaking the glass ceiling with Mrs. Clinton historic and very strong run.  With that in mind, Governor Sebelius will be able to make that dream a reality.  Second, and just as important, women made up 54% of the electorate.  It’s highly unlike that Senator Obama will be able to beat or match Senator McCain with white men.  Granted, younger white males will probably be more competitive if not strong for Senator Obama.  White men on the other hand will not be a constituent that Senator Obama, an African-American, can expect to win unless there is some dramatic disaster for McCain.  Thus, white women, the strongest Democratic base would only be solidified and enhanced with Gov. Sebelius on the ticket.  Women are more likely than men to vote anyway.  Many women will register to vote in historic numbers to support the ticket and a chance to break one more glass ceiling.  Women deserve at least the VP spot on the Democratic ticket with Senator Clinton’s strong run and to reward for their loyalty to the Democratic Party for these many years.  Think of the fundraising potential as well.  Not all women contributed to Senator Clinton because some women didn’t like her especially independent and Republican women.  Governor Sebelius will be able to help with fundraising with women were Senator Clinton was limited.  Even moderate and liberal Republican women will secretly cast a vote for an Obama-Sebelius ticket.  Even Republican women realize that a McCain win means that Roe vs. Wade will be overturned since the next president will probably nominate at least one Supreme Court Justice.  Third, Governor Sebelius represents change from Washington just as Senator Obama has been preaching.  Disregard those who say Senator Obama needs to choose a candidate with foreign policy credentials.  Well, he can shore up his national security and foreign policy credentials with his choosen Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Adviser.  Besides, Governor Sebelius has a history of working with Republicans in Kansas.  She also has demonstrated herself to be politically astute by winning in a very red state.  At minimum, she knows how to take advantage of the Republican intra-party political divide that is also plaguing Senator McCain as he fights to turn out the skeptical Evangelical base.  Plus, if Senator Clinton plays the attack dog role as Veep, she would only drive up her negatives because her attacks on McCain will only be dismissed as typical Clinton win-by-any means attack.  Governor Sebelius would bring credible attacks on McCain as advocate of the status quo and a third Bush term.
the clintons are not "change." they are part of the problem......wake up obama.
IF OBAMA SELECTS HILLARY (AND BILL) TO BE VICE PRESIDENT, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM.  I WOULD HOPE HE HAS MORE SENSE THAN TO GIVE HER THE POSITION.  I'D RATHER SEE RICHARDSON IN THERE.  ANYONE BUT HILLARY.

NO CLINTON ON THE OBAMA TICKET!!
Obama is thinking of reconsidering due to necessity. The Clinton backers arew becoming a serious problem that, if left unchecked, could lead to a diluted campaign that runs with half of the party. It's getting scary. Thus, Hillary's name is being peddled out again.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
If you want to fix the economy, unquestionably Clinton is the answer.  If Obama cannot work or delegate responsibilities to or with a former President, than he should not be
President.
So, . .  nominate Hillary as VP and make Bill ambassador to some far-away country with the stipulation that he stay there for 4 years.
This is about the only way for Obama to get out of his dilemma . . . which is that Hillary's supporters won't vote for him.
Jamil, I get the feeling this was leaked on purpose to let some other Hillary supporters know. But it's really sad how short sighted some are being. Obama needs to raise a lot of money & the DNC has been useless compared to RNC. Obama supporters have slowed donations because of the media not explaining that their donations to Obama cannot go to Clinton.

Clinton knew she lost but kept going. Why should anyone else be responsible for that debt? That should be between Obama & Clinton, not her supporters. And frankly her supporters who have so much to say, should realize that if they help Obama, his supporters will be more inclined to help her.
Obama needs those Hillary votes. I can tell you right now that almost everyone I speak to is for McCain. I said the only way I will vote for Obama is if Hillary is his VP. He has no experience whatsoever and would probably hurt us as bad as Bush. He needs to quit worrying about Bill Clinton being a "problem" as he could use the experience in a vice president to his advantage.
When said Iscol …"We need to pick the most qualified, wisest, smartest, experienced person to serve our   country alongside of Barack Obama. And I think it's Hillary Clinton. We need her, and the party needs her, and it will be a ticket that will steamroll its way to the White House."
Hold on Jean being vetted for all those qualifications should negate Hillary because…
Smart, wise, experienced women can budget a checkbook and don’t deliberately lie about experiences in Bosnia and Ireland. Who can trust her word? I can’t.

Smart, wise, experienced women would not use her 18 million+ votes as hostage

Smart, wise, experienced women would release her delegates and not secretly whisper in delegates to reverse their judgment.

Smart, wise, experienced women would not want to negotiate a roll call vote in Denver.

Smart, wise, experienced women would work very hard to influence PUMA to stop…
Telling lies about Obama being a secret Muslim/(terrorist), unqualified, who never has done anything.
Stop PUMA from writing her name on the ballot
Stop PUMA from advocating a McCain/Clinton ticket.
Once voters start seeing these actions the unity and smart, wise, experienced women will be believable.

It seems that Obama's supporters are every bit as arrogaant as their "fearful leader." Toss Hillarysupporters are a bus? Are these folks idiots? First, Obama needs their money. Having forgone the gov't funds and with his own base slowing down in the contribution dept [esp. as he shown himself to nothing new, just another pol who will say anything to get elected], he desperately needs her fatcats & the smaller donor base too in order to meet his heft $ goals. Next, to say we don't need 18 million women's votes is stupid pure & simple. Statistically women mae up the core of the voter base year after year. Sure you can piss them off & throw them away...some will come along anyway but some will sit home & some will vote for McCain even if they have to hold their nose to do it. In a tight election, that could just tip the balance to McCain. I-D-I-O-T-S...that's how you spell Obama supporters!
As for Bill, he is indeed a problem but far less so than some of the wacky leaders Obama will have to go mano a mano with if he becomes President. If he wants Hillary [a big IF], he simply has to "grow a set," sit down w/Bill & remind him just how "difficult" he could make his life if he were to misbehave. Period. Case closed. That is something Hillary couldn't do since she [nominally] sleeps w/the guy & he's the father of her child. Obama has no such limits.
Right, Jamil, Dearborn, MI, I can only imagine the maelstrom that's going to hit the fans once Bill becomes aware of what were supposed to be private talks. Of course, HRC probably tells Bill in private anyhoo. But the media will make it almost impossible now for him to campaign wholeheartedly for BO, if he were ever going to before...(they'll keep raising the issue of how he could, knowing how Barack feels about him, etc., etc., etc., and it will all be overblown - no president, as sitting pres wants another guy, former pres, to make policy, even if he respects the former pres' administration, or else what's the point? in name only?).
