SAN DIEGO, CA, July 13 – Barack Obama sent condolences to the families of nine soldiers killed in Afghanistan during an assault by militants, during a brief press conference here Sunday after his speech to the National Council of La Raza.

The assault, which also wounded 15 soldiers, was the deadliest attack on US forces in Afghanistan in three years, according to the Associated Press report.

“I want to start off with the sad news of the nine US troops that appear to have been killed in Afghanistan,” Obama told reporters. “Details are still coming in, so I’m not going to comment on exactly what happened. But the main thing I want to communicate is our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these extraordinary heroes, and we need to make sure that we are providing them to every bit of support that we can.”

The senator also said that Congress should be consulted about any backstop measures to help lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in case they cannot honor their debt, while reiterating his earlier comments that the companies were “critical components” of making sure that mortgages are available and that people can stay in their homes. The Federal Reserve and the Treasury are in talks with the two government-sponsored companies.

“Congress has to be closely consulted, particularly if you've got taxpayer money at stake,” the senator said.

Obama declined to comment on a report that said he had called former President Bill Clinton potentially problematic and appeared to bristle when asked for his response to a cartoon on the July 21 cover of the New Yorker magazine that depicts he and his wife Michelle doing a fist bump. Michelle is shown with an afro and an AK-47, while the senator is shown wearing a white turban of sorts. He said he had no response but did not say whether he had seen the cover.

New Yorker cartoons are generally meant as satire.

"Generally" Athena are you kidding me? Of course it was satire however this was a very bad idea. I am getting nearly as sick of those on the far left as I am those on the right. Between the far right, the far left, the MEDIA'S bias reporting, and the ignorant and racist in this country I am not sure Obama can pull this off. I read blog after blog filled with hate for this man and am yet to here one reason other then generalities or rumors. I have come to the conclusion that this country is not ready for a man of this quality, and deserves another 8 years with McBush.
Senator Obama may not have a response but I do.  The cartoon is disgusting and demeaning towards the Obama's.  I hate it.  I have sent my views to the New Yorker with my objections to their trashy picture.

Let's see one on the McCain's.  It should have his first crippled wife and three children in the background as he is jetting off with his barbie doll  sitting on millions of dollars.
Can't wait to see that one.

If the New Yorker was trying to make a satire of fear, they failed -- big time.  They did nothing but insult and used the excuse of a satire.

Did big bad war hero John McSane call any of the families, that's right we are still winning Iraq, does he even know about afganistan, a few months ago he stated Bin Laden was dead, perhaps his mind slipped and he was thinking Saddam Hussien.  I guess he was watching Cindy plaster face race cars, now that's a worthy cause.
I don't think Obama should lower his self to even comment on the cover of the New Yorker, there satire is like the heartless jokes that John McCain and Phil Gramm made last week.I think it is evil that this cover shows a flag being burnt in a fireplace when we just lost 9 soldiers and fifteen other were injured, plus the over four thousand we have lost and the thousands injured to date .I think the media and everyone needs to condemn this sick publication. My Prayers are with the soldiers and their families.

It's really ashame that he can't comment on that cartoon..and I do mean CAN NOT!! Obama has to work over time to try to make SOME Americans forget he is an African American and unfortunately that means he can't respond to negative sterotypes depicted in the American media and mainstream.

Obama is our countries opportunity to have a president that is more "in touch" with the average American than any other president or presidential hopeful in a long time. For those that want to emphasize his "blackness" in hopes of "reminding" people, well I hope your ploys are unsuccessful.  He is a proud American citizen, a good husband and an engaged father, he can heal our global image, he is willing to consult other knowledgable and informed professionals to make decisions and he should be our nations next president.
I would be honored to have an opportunity to give Senator Obama a fist bump....You go my brother!
The establishment is doing its best to help defeat Obama.
Dont let him actually lower taxes on the poor or the middle class.  McCain's "plan" is to further reduce taxes for the richest 1%.   Apparently that is the way to the heart of the media.
So much for the 'New Yorker' being classified as a 'responsible' magazine...  This is expected for gossip rags, but not the New Yorker...  Boo, hiss whoever approved this...

"New Yorker cartoons are generally meant as satire. "

First off, I just would like to say that it is a shame that the New Yorker magazine will go this route.  I am sure this will help them sell more magazines, but unfortunately I think at the expense of the chances for Obama to win in November.

But how is it that the New Yorker can depict Michelle with an afro and holding an AK 47, while giving him a fist bump and depict Barrack wearing a white turbin in the oval office with the American flag burning in a fire place with a picture of Bin Laden hanging up, be considered or be meant as "Satire."

I am sorry First Read, I took a look at the cover and let me just say, that if the New Yorker depicted Hilary Clinton as a "house wife" iroing Bill's shirt or cooking dinner in the kitchen while holding a baby, I'd doubt it would be called satire.  The Hilary supporters would be calling for the heads of the marketing and advertising publishers.  Not to mention EVERY feminist group out there would be protesting the New Yorker, and you know what? They would every right to.

When is this going to stop?  It seems that as everyday passes by, the media finds a new way to try to sink Obama.  So I guess now they are going to use the "its only Satire" routine.

Now the New Yorker does appeal to the educated reader, but we live in a country where there are more voters who are not as informed about politics as compared to voters that are informed.

And with the Obama campaign trying to debunk all of these internet rumors about his faith, patriotism, family background and his associations, how can we expect those same voters who are not as informed, to differentiate between the lies circulating on the internet and the New Yorker magazine with this cover.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the same voters that voted for Bush twice and thought the war in Iraq was justified, will probably believe what is on the cover of the New Yorker magazine.

Then again, do not take my word for, just look at the cover yourself. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/13/yikes-controversial-emnew_n_112429.html

Unfortunately, when a campaign has worked as hard as this one has to quell disinformation regarding the Obamas' religious beliefs and patriotism, it is particularly galling to see the flames fanned on purpose - satire or no.
Todd,

Thanks for the bailout line regarding the New Yorker harmless history of satire. I get that and thought that Mr Obama and wife should simply ignore it.

However did you notice that the UNITED STATES FLAG was burning in the fireplace! As a veteran that was very offensive to me, many Americans have died under that flag. O by the way they are dying as we speak.

Also, the picture of Bin Laden in the Oval Office the monster that was responsible for the death of over 3000 AMERICANS!

You and your media pundits talk of ethics, at what point is it okay that our freedom of speech is mocked with no regard for humanity or responsibility. I also read the NY artists point, but there was a better way to achieve it.
I resent Obama using the deaths of american soldiers as political pawns.  When has he ever sent condolences to any other members of families of soldiers killed in combat?  He should be ashamed to even mention it in a political speech.  As a US Army retiree and vietnam veteran, I am appalled by his political condolences.
Of course the New Yorker is satire, but would they have done that to Martin Luther King? A world of no.

This is sickening, and I've been reading the New Yorker since I was a teenager. An inside cartoon or illustration to make a point might be acceptable, but as a cover? No.

I'm sure alot of people are cancelling their subscriptions. How many Republicans read the New Yorker anyway? The New Yorker folks are about to find out, I suspect, when they get their congratulation fan letters from the Right.
I just want to add that I don't question the right of the artist to draw that picture of Obama. On the contrary - that is free expression and free speech.

But we have every right to question the judgment of the Editors who put it on the cover in this time of turmoil and division.
Obama is a joke..first he tries to copy JFK now it's Reagan at Brandenburg Gate....I knew both men and he is neither. He is too busy nagging people to teach their kids Spanish rather than English...There is nothing worse than a Nagger like Obama, well maybe there is Michelle Obama she has hated her country till her husband began to run...a real pair of patriots they are!
I felt like crying when I saw the cover of the New Yorker Magazine.  Who decided that the right wing needed some help with their dirty work?
Hey nobodys scared of the cartoon's for we love them and see them as our hope for tomorrow and leadership for years to come a lead to which the next demorcratic nominee can follow toward's the white house
I was shocked by the new cover of ‘The New Yorker‘. It depicts the Obamas standing in the Oval office fist bumping, as machine gun toting terrorists, with Barack in a turban dressed like an Islamo fascist, and Michelle with a huge Angela Davis type afro, and wearing army boots, with a picture of Bin Laden on the wall, and the American flag burning in the fire place.

My mouth dropped. My heart broke.

The magazine is defending the cover as political satire. Scarborough thinks it’s funny. Mika, and Barnacle don’t. I find it nakedly malicious.

True satire is stretching an envelope in which resides the spirit of truth. This, as Mrs. Obama has rightly said, is mean.

This will backfire. People will show their solidarity with Barack's campaign, and stop buying the magazine. It’s circulation will go down.

Because they are decent, and fair, this will offend some voters who are not yet Obama supporters, and be the catalyst that pushes them into his column.
Hey nobodys scared of the cartoon's for we love them and see them as our hope for tomorrow and leadership for years to come a lead to which the next demorcratic nominee can follow toward's the white house
I know satire and cartoons... this is neither. This is intentional fear feeding at its lowest and worst.
That surge must be working for somebody?

Like we owe the Iraq's something or are we just trying to save face...
American Pride is being perverted...
Bring the troops out NOW!
I just went out to the New Yorkers website to their contact page, intending to send them an email.  Their contact site is down due to the amount of email submissions.  Pretty funny!
I've become so disgusted with the media. I want simply to see the policy positions of each candidate on the issues. Clearly, factually, side by side. No spin. No bias. No pandering to the worst amoung us.
But I guess that doesn't rake in the bucks, huh? So they have sold out to dark side and thrown integrity aside.
Never has a picture been so clear and true ! I guess the New Yorker is helping to open everyone's eyes to the problem that is obama
