McCain wants more Afghanistan troops

ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- Today at a "Jobs for America" town hall, McCain forcefully called for additional troops in Afghanistan for the first time in this campaign.

"Our commanders on the ground in Afghanistan say that they need at least three additional brigades," McCain said. "Thanks to the success of the surge, these forces are becoming available, and our commanders in Afghanistan must get them."

VIDEO: John McCain says, "I know how to win wars. And if I'm elected president, I will turn around the war in Afghanistan, just as we have turned around the war in Iraq." Watch his entire speech.

This statement suggests that McCain might consider shifting troops directly from Iraq to Afghanistan. But speaking to reporters on his bus after today's speech, McCain indicated that he'd be open to those additional troops coming from NATO.

Just last week, McCain told reporters on his bus that the problem in Afghanistan was not troop presence -- but rather the strained relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan. "I think the situation in Afghanistan is very tough," McCain said then. "One of the major reasons for it is not so much troop presence as the situation on the Pakistan-Afghan border. And I've been briefed several times by military leaders, including I met just yesterday with the ambassador from Pakistan to the United States."

McCain said just one week ago that the way to solve the situation in Afghanistan was to look at "a broad variety of areas" -- none of which were an increased troop presence, but instead included some things that were absent from his speech today, including "the effectiveness of the Karzai government, ungovernable areas, ungoverned, uncontrolled areas of the Afghan-Pakistan border."

Yesterday, however, McCain left the door open for an increased troop presence in Afghanistan. But he also quickly shifted the conversation back to Iraq when asked directly about troop levels in Afghanistan. "I think we need to do whatever is necessary and that could entail more troops," he said when asked about increased troops in Afghanistan. "We need to do a lot of things in Afghanistan. A lot of this has to do with Pakistan and the safe haven areas that I have visited in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. But the major point here is that Sen. Obama refuses to acknowledge that he was wrong [on Iraq]."

In addition to more troops, McCain today recommended that the Afghani army should be doubled and that as president he would establish an Afghanistan war czar, who would be located in the White House and would have complete control over military action in the country.

"Afghanistan is sufficiently important that a separate Afghanistan czar is needed," McCain said. "I'll appoint a highly-respected national security leader, based in the White House, report directly to the president, whose sole mission will be to ensure we bring the war in Afghanistan to a successful end."

McCain is not in very good shape. Not only is he trailing by 9% in the latest Quinnipiac national poll, but he is only ahead by 6% in SOUTH CAROLINA, one of the reddest states in the South: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/07/15/tuesday-polls/
It's just Another Mental error on McNothing's part.It happen's so often, not even the MSM can keep up with them. Sad, that he even has a platform to present his Nonsense.
Ok MSM and FR, you need to point out that this is a FLIP FLOP and do it now! If you call Obama's suggestion that he is open to delaying troop withdrawals as a flip flop, you'd better call this one too!!!!!
Follow the leader Johnny Bush...
So, last week no troops needed, but this week troops needed????  Watch the teflon in action folks!!  Look, I'll pull a rabbit out of my hat, nothin' up my sleeve....
Nice to see the lil' ol' fella following Obama's good judgment.

Now tht I think about it, when McCain has followed good judgment, good things have happened and when he's followed bad judgment (S&L abomination, 1990s deregulation of telecoms and financial industry, Iraq all quickly come to mind), bad things have happened.  The common denominator seems to be that he is always following someone's judgment.  This man may make for a middling senator, but would be a poor leader.
FLIP FLOP!  FLIP FLOP!  FLIP FLOP!

Oh, wait, he's not a Democrat?  Well, then the media won't consider it a flip flop.

Carry on.
"Today at a "Jobs for America" town hall, McCain forcefully called for additional troops in Afghanistan for the first time in this campaign".

He is not only old, he is also slow. This type of leadership is called "following'"

Old, out of touch, fooloish, adulterer .... these terms best identify this person.

I guess the GOP is really sorry they could not come up with a candidate, so they settled on this retread.
Geographically challenged McCain, also probably blames on the uncooperative East Pakistan, which has existed in decades.
Specifics.  Educated points.  How nice to get them from one of the Presidential candidates.   Wonder why 72% of Americans feel confident in McCain's ability to be commander in chief, as opposed to 48% who feel that way about Obama.
Let me get this straight, Senator...

You want to move troops from Iraq to the place where we should have been focusing all along?  Brilliant!  Now, where have I heard this before...  Oh yeah, Obama has been saying this for YEARS!  Thanks for finally paying attention.

One more thing, Senator McCain- Are you still beating the drums on Iran?  Because I'm sure a lot of voters that happen to have draft-age children are wondering how you plan to provide adequate troop numbers on 3 fronts.
Now McOld wants more troops WOW....This has been needed.....He finally sees what Obama has been saying all along.....
He's a little late to the dinner party on afghanistan...and secondly, Obama was not and is not wrong on Iraq.

Obama voted against going in based on the data given to congress...that turned out to be in hindsight the right choice.  We are not more secure because of our involvement in Iraq.  We've spent almost a Trillion dollars there with nothing but thousands of troops dead, and much much more in innocent civilians dead in Iraq (which most americans overlook).
It was wrong to go in, he wants to get out...and the country wants us out.

SO TELL ME YOU OIL SUPPORTED WH*RE how he was possibly wrong on this.

I'll honor McCon's service, he sure in the heck isn't
It is good to see that McCain has flip-floped again, and this time in the right direction by following Obama's lead and judgment on Afganistan.  It is also good to see McCain admit that he can not oversee the war effort himself but needs a Czar to oversee it for him!  Not only is he clueless with the economy, he is clueless as to how to run a war!
I think the real point here is that Obama was right.  Has he not been calling for more troops in Afghanistan?  Have I lost my mind?  Has McCain?  So now he changes his mind, and that's OK once again.  Way to make a major change in our Afghan effort nothing but a big nanny nanny boo boo on Obama.  I really dislike this man.
Charlie Tallahassee (Sent Tuesday, July 15, 2008 1:05 PM)
Charlie, not sure what this post meant today – but I don’t see how you can read a single one of my posts and not get that I am an Obama supporter.  And I agree the, polls are looking favorable, even here in my often red home state.  In the 60-69 year olds, he leads McCain by 8 points.  He can and should win the general; but I am cautious because I have been paying attention for the past 8 years and I know the repubs are willing to lie and change facts to meet their agenda and to really ‘reel in’ low information voters.
For a guy who said he knows how to win wars more than Obama, his "experience" is also in his troubled head. In just 2 days, he's reversed himself or more accurately had no clue what on troop levels in Afghanistan.

It's bad enough that we had a President who didn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia. John McCain who came bottom of his class at the naval academy, screwed up several times during training, can't remember that Czechoslovakia split 15 years ago, is probably the dumbest oldest man ever to run for President.
Will McCain be called out for this blatant flip-flop and grabbing ahold of Obama's coattails?  Of course not.  The corporate media has "earned" their respective seats in Sen. McCain's plane.  McCain's logic is mind-boggling.  I think I understand his thought process now.  He equates excellence with the duration or number of times an activity is performed instead of actual competence.  McCain is the equivalent of taking the same test 3 times and getting a 40 and then stating that his 3 combined tests are better than Obama's one test that he made a 95 on.  For McCain, to supposedly have so much experience, he surely doesn't have any foresight.  Keep propping him up MSM.  You're doing a heckuva a job (not for the American people though.)
Last week McSame didn't want more troops, now he does (he's taking a page out of the Obama playbook again). I truly wonder if he remembers the previous statements he makes.  This is one scary dude.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
McFossil has no idea what the heck is going on. He says one thing and then 5 minutes later he contradicts himself. But what the heck? Some people would rather have world war 3, live under a bridge because they lost their homes and savings then vote for a black guy.

When I read some of the comments I just have to laugh because actually admitting that this country is full of dimwits is really sad.

Just Say No to Obama (Sent Tuesday, July 15, 2008 2:44 PM)
----------------------------------------------------

It's obvious that your type stopped listening to anything Obama had to say once you saw his picture and how his name was spelled.

This was Obama's plan for the last few years. And now that McCain has come around, it's articulate and it makes sense?

Close your eyes and listen...maybe you'll get with the times.
Because I'm sure a lot of voters that happen to have draft-age children are wondering how you plan to provide adequate troop numbers on 3 fronts.
-----------------
Well, Suburban Mom, you better be asking Obama that same question!  And, I can't believe how people have fallen for BO saying he'd get our troops our of Iraq, bring them home and SAVE all that money we were spending there.  He just forgot to tell you tho that they'll just ship everything, everybody to Afghanistan!  We're still going to be in war and one that's going to be even harder to win!
Is McCain taking his talking points from Obama or what?

Two weeks ago a top military official complained about Bush spreading the troops too thin in Iraq, and leaving him hamstrung on the ground in Afghanistan.

And what in the world are you talking about "ruling race"? Wow, that sure is a step into the deep end of the pool when it appears you can't swim.

Ty,

Can we have an honest discourse, or are you afraid of that?

My reference, as you well know, was with regard to the 20% of White voters polled in WV, and Kentucky, that said race mattered when it came to their vote. They are not alone in America.

Ruling Class = White Christian Males

If you need to bring forth a contentious argument do it, but don't waste our time with lame comebacks.

Your feeble posts most likely aren't swaying any new votes for McCain.

Nancy,
I cannot find a single article from your vantage point.  I feel I have followed this one closely and I can find dozens of articles supporting my comments.  Please cite your source.  http://thinkprogress.org/2008/04/03/new-gi-bill/.
OMG, DIDN'T OBAMA JUST STATE THIS? WTF?
"Our commanders on the ground in Afghanistan say that they need at least three additional brigades," McCain said. "Thanks to the success of the surge, these forces are becoming available, and our commanders in Afghanistan must get them."

Just last week, McCain told reporters on his bus that the problem in Afghanistan was not troop presence -- but rather the strained relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Senator:  Until Obama suggested deploying 2 additinal brigades to Afghanistan, you thought Iraq was the center of the terrorist universe.  You have called the real military problem political.  While commaders on the ground and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have called for more troops for over 2 years, you have said they were not necessary, and ignored their requests.

It took an attack that killed 9 Americans and a suggestions from a "inexperienced" Senator named Obama to change your mind.

So much for military and national security credentials.

An Afghan war czar? Another czar? What is it with these Republicans and their love for Russian royalty?

The bottom line is Obama said more than 16 months ago we needed to pull out of Iraq and reinforce the effort in Afghanistan. Today, McCain has adopted half of Obama's broad outline.

McCain hasn't yet accepted the other half of Obama's broad outline - the pulling forces out of Iraq part. But its coming, even if its instigated by the Bush Administration claiming "victory" after being told to leave by the Iraqi government.

For now, McCain wants all the troops in Iraq, and all the troops in Afghanistan. Hey, he does have a vision for the future - a new capability for military forces to be in two places simultaneously. But unless you accept that science fiction possibility, his words makes about as much quantitative sense as his promises to balance the federal budget in four years.
Hey! Let's send McCain on a fact-finding trip to Czechoslovakia? He can even take some Apache helos overhead and his flak jacket. All in favor say 'aye'
Mixed Message: At a Jobs for America rally talking only (mainly) about war policy... I guess I know what the growing line of future jobs will be, call it Military, Inc.
"John"ny come lately!

McSame, step OFF!

"McCain might consider shifting troops directly from Iraq to Afghanistan".

Isn't this what Obama has been suggesting we should do???
Obama campaign -- If the media will not do it's job and reveal the inconsistencies that flow daily from McCain's mouth, then please bottle every one of his flip-flops up and unveil them in September when Americans start paying attention to this election.  Not withstanding his glaring flip-flops on domestic policy McCain has flip-flopped on his Iraq policy.  He said that he was against time-tables and then he stated that he would balance the budget by the end of his first term with savings from victories in the Iraq and Afghanistan war.  Now he says that more troops are needed in Afghanistan when a week earlier he said they were not.  MEDIA -- Do your job.  No one's asking for special favors.  Barack "refines" his policies and you run news stories for weeks on him moving to the center.  McCain ignores his past positions and embraces contradictory ones and you ignore it and continue to brand him the "Straight-Talker."  PLEASE!!!
From Bob in Tallahassee:

It is also good to see McCain admit that he can not oversee the war effort himself but needs a Czar to oversee it for him!

Maybe he can find a good one in Czechoslovakia!  Somebody get him a map made before 1993!
sotiredofignorance,

Thank you for your question. The Holy Scriptures were not revealed in the English lanuguage, but have been translated into English.

The English word for G-D has the 'O' vowel in it as you well know. However, our Jewish brothers, and sisters noted that the English spelling, with the 'O' in the middle, spelled backward is offensive when referring to The Creator, and I agree.

Thanks again. You do your handle proud.
Why no Flip-Flop call First Read?   The MSM is starting to look like NBA Refs:  First Read:  are you going to play the role of Tim Donaghy or officiate this evenly?
just heard kay bailey hutchison (sp?) blame NATO for the failure in Afghanistan. That NATO was supposed to deal with that theatre while the US concentrated on Iraq. Really, Kay? The vast majority of your NATO allies told Bush NOT to invade Iraq and you did it anyway, hanging them out to dry, flushing US credibility down the toilet in the process!!! You're lucky any NATO country has sent anything to Afghanistan with that attitude. I guess those Brits and Canadians dying in Khandahar don't count. Idiot!
Barack will not concede because the surge should have been in Afghanistan, and Pakistan. McCain has finally gotten Barack’s initial position; but for how long? Let’s hope he doesn’t forget and send the brigades to not existent Czechoslovakia.
McCain should be careful his supporters dismiss some serious flaws of this senior citizen’s mental and physical acuity.
Even when he tries to walk the walk, or talk the talk; his brain won't let him. He might bump his head or forget. This is no joke.

Read through the lines...McCain will send troops to Afghanistan from Iraq THROUGH IRAN...he wants to attack and occupy Iran. Very scary.
If McCain is elected, our worries regarding the job shortage will be over. The draft will have our unemployment rate dropping like a rock.
Nobama:

You can bet if Senator Obama was talking about waging war on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran simultaneously, he would be getting bombarded with questions about how he intends to carry out his plans.  Not McWarmonger, though- nope.  He can saber-rattle all he likes, joke about bombing countries, and will never have to answer for it.

McCain is also on record as stating he is for reinstating the draft, as long as it could be carried out "fairly"  What the heck he means by that is anyone's guess, though.
john so when did you win a war, you said to day you know how to win a war, what war was that, since we have not been in a war you were young enough to fight in since vietnam, oha that right you got shot down, and had to sit that one out or maybe it was the dicorce war you were in. In no way am i discounting or dissing POW's but i have never seen some one like this guy who want to remind everybody he was one!!! i always though you would like to forget about it, but that right john you running for president!!
i believe mccain is 6 months too late.  Obama has been talking about putting troops in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year.

mccain lies about voting record on veterans issues

Today at a "Jobs for America" town hall, McCain forcefully called for additional troops in Afghanistan for the first time in this campaign.
--------------------------------------------------

I like the nice FirstRead spin that he called for more troops "forcefully," just like a Fearless Leader should. I'm sure Kil Il Jung also calls for stuff "forcefully."

But actually McBush is following Obama's lead on Afghanistan, as FirstRead somehow failed to notice. Obama called for two new brigades, so McCain ups the ante to three. I guess that means McBush is one brigade more macho than Obama.
Wow, McCain and Bush,

They keep talking as if their decisions now are things they had in mind all along.  Obama has been saying we needed more presence in Afghanistan since 2004. Now it's their idea and Barack "was wrong"

Obama has said we need to get out of Iraq. The Iraqi government wants us to get out or give them a timetable when we will. But Barack is "wrong"

Obama said we needed surgical strikes in Pakistan.
They finally do it with some success. But Barack is "wrong"

Al Qaeda and the Taliban are back to full strength as Obama said they would be while we were fighting a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. But you know Barack was "wrong"

When will we hide the prejudice and bigotry and admit Obama is the best mind and temperament we are going to find for a long time to come.  He thinks, he talks, he cares, and he tells the truth. Not the truth we want to hear, but the truth.

If McCain or Bush told me it was raining I wouldn't believe it until I looked out the window. And even then I'd have to make sure Karl Rove wasn't there with a water hose.
When it comes to the ecomony and the wars - John McCain repeats everything Barack Obama does - he just says it's his idea.

Thieving bastard

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Where is the label and story slamming McCain for being a flip-flopper? For being naive on national security?
So let's all say it out loud: McCain is now copying Obama's position on Afghanistan.

And with troops that he doesn't have since he's against pulling any out of Iraq.

From Talking Points Memo, the best news source out there.
McCain has no original messages. I hope he explodes at Obama at the debates. I think Obama knows how to push his buttons. LOL.
Say, what a nifty jobs program for those who proclaim their patriotism and toughness here daily...John mcsame says we need more troops and more jobs...sounds like a natural fit...suit up and ship out tough guys
it has become quite apparent that the corporate owned media has been instructed to give mccain well edited coverage to hoodwink the american public into thinking mccain is not a bumbling buffoon but instead is something that only exists in fantasy. the media sucks
