So whose troops for Afghan surge?

In calling for an additional three brigades to supplement troop levels in Afghanistan today, McCain said that such an increase was made possible due to the success of the recent troop surge in Iraq.

"Thanks to the success of the surge, these forces are becoming available, and our commanders in Afghanistan must get them," McCain said, implying that additional troops could either be shifted directly from Iraq or from other regions due to troops coming home from Iraq.

VIDEO: A Race for the White House panel talks about John McCain's speech Tuesday, where he said Barack Obama's goals for Iraq are flawed.

Yet while speaking to reporters on his bus after this morning's town hall, McCain would not commit to whether those additional brigades would definitely be American ones. When asked if the three brigades would come from the United States or NATO, McCain said: "We need to work that out. We need to have greater participation on the part of our NATO allies, as I said in my opening remarks today and we need a lot more help."

Later, McCain added that he planned to press the members of NATO for "increased materiel" and "assistance in the form of personnel," as well as assistance centralizing the military command structure in the region and performing "civil military kind of work" that has worked in Iraq. He then reiterated that additional combat troops are just another area where NATO could help.

"There are many areas where our NATO allies can help us," McCain said. "That's one of them."

On a conference call today, in response to a question on where the troops to Afghanistan would come from, McCain foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann said, according to a transcript of the call: "The most immediate way to make those troops available is to ask our NATO allies to step up to the plate and send more troops. When Sen. McCain is sworn in as president, if he wins this election, it will be different rotational schedule and additional brigades will be available. We have 53 brigades or brigade equivalents in the Army and Marine Corps right now. Eighteen are deployed. Sen. McCain is looking for an additional three, some of which may come from NATO, some could be the US."

When First Read asked a senior McCain official what would happen if NATO allies decided not to contribute to an Afghanistan surge, the official replied that McCain "preferred to get as many as possible from NATO allies." But if US commanders needed three brigades, and the only troops he could send were American ones, then he'd send three American brigades, the officials said.

Seriously, how many countries or organizations (e.g. NATO) would want to work with a mentally deranged President?

McCain should be on his meds and in bed.
McCain calling for 'military welfare' from NATO is sickening. If we had excercised due diligence in the first place, it would be honorable to ask for help, but not now.

We squandered our military might in order that oil men Bush, and Cheney, as well as Haliburton et al could line their greedy pockets. Now we have been reduced to begging for help.

In the not so distant past, we were the nation that others turned to for help. Surely we have lost our way.
Once again, absolutely no coherent strategy from McCain/McSame/Bush-3.  Did he just make up this policy today on the bus?

Maybe he can get three brigades from Czechoslovakia, now that Prussia is no longer a threat. Are there Sunni's or Shia's in Czechoslovakia?

What a lovable old forgetful angry coot that Grandpa Flip-Flops is! Yep, that's who I want with his finger on the red nuclear button. Maybe he can blow up the Ottoman Empire!

Obama/Kaine '08
Do me a favor and ask Big Brains Randy Scheunemann how many of those FIFTY THREE BRIGADES are COMBAT BRIGADES? He's absolutely playing the media for the utter uninformed fools that they are.

Thank you.

53 brigades? HA! *snort*

Every time an American leader volunteers NATO allies to do something means they don't know who will do it.

Today McCain was all fluff & Obama was substance.
"Iraq - the surge worked.  It's not working, it has worked.  NATO is in charge of Afghanistan. ...NATO needs to help more with Afghanistan."
-McCain surrogate Sen. Lindsey Graham on Meet The Press, 6/22/08.

He's saying that Afghanistan is not our problem, it's NATO's.

That's how disinterested McCain was in dealing with Afghanistan, where the 9/11 hijackers' orders came from.

And he hasn't even mentioned Pakistan.

These guys are blinded by Iraq.
sooooo....
our TROOPS will leave Iraq for Afghanistan...
because the SURGE WORKED??
IF McCain had not voted for the WAR FOR OIL...
Afghanistan would not be in the shape it is in...
we would have bin laden by now...
and THOUSANDS of our MILITARY would not have DIED for Bush's OIL WAR...that john McSAME voted for!
He wants Obama to say he was wrong on the surge???
I want McCAIN to admit he was wrong for voting our young people to die in a war for BIG OIL!!
The surge has NOT worked...our troops are STILL THERE ...STILL DYING...STILL BEING INJURED HORRIBLY!!IDIOT!!!
Here's the news, First Read.  Both Condi Rice and Robert Gates have asked the Europeans and the Australians more than once to help. They were told no help until we had a plan.  That's probably why the Bushies are scrambling to create a plan.  What a backwards way to run foreign policies and wars.
Vote McInsane and get ready for the draft. Listening to him sing Bomb Bomb Bomb... Bomb Bomb Iran is just sickening. Only the insane try to defend the indefensible.
Isn't this a case of Obama suggested two brigades for Afghanistan, so McSame betters the opening bid? Who's leading and who's following here?
The US army alone possesses 37 combat brigades (as of 2005), while the Army National Guard has another 39 (as of 2005). That number has been steadily increasing since then (with the ultimate goal of 43 combat brigades and 49 combat brigades respectively by 2009 IIRC).

Now, the question of whether or not these brigades are actually combat READY, is another story entirely. It seems that all the money we have been putting into Iraq has gone into reconstruction, and very little of it into modernization of those brigades that aren't combat ready.
McCain flip flops again.

It's hilarious that McCain is finally agreeing with Obama's position that the war on terror is in Afghanistan.

When McCain and Bush invaded Iraq, Obama wrote several articles saying that it was a mistake. Obama argued that we should finish the Taliban and capture Al Qaeda which has been based in Afghanistan.

John McCain's flip flop proves he has no clue about world affairs.
HELLO....McFly....is there anybody in there????

Lord help us.  McCain literally scares the Jeebesus out of me!!!
War and politicians an oxymoron at best, McCain was in the military, once, but he is just another politician now and shows he is willing to say almost anything to hide the fact that his party leader screwed it up and there is no real strategy in the war on terror from him, Bush or the whole republican cadre of great patriotic dunderheads.
While Georgie Bush-league continues to see the light at the end of the tunnel on the war and the economy, the rest of the country waits for him to go home for good.
I cannot in good concious give McCain or his party another chance, when they make a mistake they tend to do more work covering it up than fixing it, a sign that ego is more important than intellect in the GOOFY OLD PARTY.
The next president cannot spend more time covering up the many problems caused by the worst president in history, Herbert Hoover is restored to a better place in history thanks to the shrubstore cowboy.
We will all breath a sigh of relief when this needlenosed know-nothing fades into the sunset, maybe Bush and McCain can get jobs at fox news, they seem to hire all the dregs of this failed presidency.
They need all the old angry white boys they can find so that they feel like a tidal wave of power when all they really are is a group of washed up ideological fundamentalists, just like the terrorists they say they are fighting against.
It is very intersting to see that both sides in this war on terror are spouting conservative ideals, they seem to have more in common than we first thought.
Hello, my name is Eric Tatro.  I would really like to start getting some of my post actually on the board.  I didnt realize you couldnt attack other statements on this site, and therefore I will not do it anymore. It seems since I have attacked a few statements on this site, that I no longer can get my comments posted. I will just state my opinions, I will no longer be critical of others post.  Please start allowing some of my post on the board.  Thank you !!
I think mccain truly is mentally ill. After 8 years of mental midget bush, we sure can't afford another nut case in the white house.
Some more "Straight-Talk" from McCain.

Will there ever be a time when the stenographers in the media will choose to report what actually happens rather then passing along the narrative that the campaign wants us to believe?

I certainly hope so before it's too late.
Oncce again, McCain twists himself likes a pretzel with conflictiing comments.
IF BUSH AND MACAIN DOEST KNOW HOW LEAD THIS GREAT NATION  THEIR LISTEN TO THE WORLD PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA AND COPY HIM . THATS CRAZY THEIR HAV BN ATACKIN BARACK LIKE SOMEONE WHO DOEST CARRES ABOUT THIS COUNTRY NOW WHATS HAPPEN? MACCAIN RUNNING FOR THE OFFICE HE GOT NO IDEA HOW LEAD THIS COUNTRY ! HE GOT NO PLANS HE GOT NO VIEWS FOR U.S.A ! HE JUST WAK UP IN THE MORNING AND ALRIGHT LETS DO THIS LETS GO BEN LADEN LETS FIXIN THE ECONOMY WITHOUT A PLANS ! YOU HAVE A CHOICE IN THIS ELECTION GO THE FUTURE OR CLEANING U.S.A IMAGES IN THIS WOLRD
It is clear that McSame is flip flopping again by now saying that we should send troops to Afghanistan and I have not seen much mentioned about it on some networks.  It is also clear that McSame is not familiar with international affairs because he still thinks that Checkoslovaia exists.  He is not ready to be president nor is he qualified.  If Barrach made those same mistakes he would neve hear the end of it.
Call out the Euro Surrender Monkeys to fix the war on Terror for us. Yeah, John, that's the ticket!
This is Pathetic! McSain gets a Foreign Policy pass because he was a POW.

How can you promise to send 3 Brigades of troops from NATO?? What wars has he won?? Where is Czechoslovakia?? What is the difference between Sunni's or Shia's?? Why did the US send troops into Afghanistan first not Iraq? Where is Al Queda??

This is shameful for the media to ignor this.
McCrazie said today, "He can win wars". Ok now can someone please tell me what wars has McCrazie had won. The won that he was in back at the began off time. He got caught and became an POW for 5yrs. And now at the start of the Iraq war he sided with Bush and went into Iraq with a 2 day plan. Wow, we been there for 5 plus yrs now and we finialy see a little daylight. Wow.... I thought that all this was in my mind like Sen.Grahm said....... But still I want to know what wars did this fool won or had to do with any planning because this Iraq war was planned by a 3rd grade class that was trying to get out of doing there homework....
An attempt to turn people's attention away by McCain. Really, we all know by now if we want more troops in Afghan we'd have to transfer some from Iraq.
Nato isn't welfare and it sure doesn't have a bottomless wallet.

By the way, worst economy in Taiwan in past 30yrs, and bad economies all over the world.

They'd be idiots accepting McCain's "generous" offer.
McCain has painted himself into a corner with his tongue.  He can't commit troops to Afghanistan because he knows they must come Iraq.  He won't do this because it's Obama's position, and it's the right position, but Mr. Straight Talk won't admit it.  So McCain has trapped himself in Iraq, just like Bush.

Via Think Progress:

Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen: "What I said in my statement is also important as a part of that calculus, which is, I don’t have troops I can reach for, brigades I can reach to send into Afghanistan until I have a reduced requirement in Iraq."

Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExPiBn5j2ro

After reading up on how McCain quoted on "I know how to win Wars" along with the Afghan surge topic, I must ask how can one man push for winning Wars when there's a bigger War going on with the US dollar.

Cmon!!!!! WIN THE WAR AT HOME.... then maybe his quote would stick.
McCain is downright confused and confusing...
I want someone younger and a whole lot smarter than McCain in the White House.
Because I have said it before McSame is a LIAR...Plain and simple....HE IS A LIAR....the MSM makes no ig deal of it either, they wold rather spend days trashing General Clark.......et's face it, McSame OWNS the MSM, MSNBC, FOX and CNN talks about what McSame wants talked about, they don't give all the flip flops and lies and scandal in his camp any time or they may lose their seat on the plane and bus....SAD, which is why the net is the only place to get the real news
Wow ...... we are begging for help.  8 years ago we was considers a military powerhouse.... Now we are asking for help.  Way to go!!!!!

My friends, if elected I will demand the draft be reinstated to troop up for my endless wars plan...it will make the war much more democratic and participative when the chickenhawks' kids are sent to be shot at in Iraq and Iran along with your kids.

Thank you my friends
I wonder why the media doesn't cover the fact that there is universal avoidance by our so called allies on terror in actually doing anything in the war zones...heck man, even the stalwart british have cut and run on us in Iraq...doggone sissies didn't come up with more reasons to stay like the bushleague does.
NATO countries are already saying - thanks but we'll take a pass this time.

If McCain wants Afghanistan and Iraq - that spells

DRAFT.

...and he knows NATO is a no go, which means....
after the u.s. fiasco in iraq it's unlikely nato will offer any help, remember most of nato was against the u.s. invasion of iraq, we more or less told them their opinion didn't matter and they were either for us or against us, not a good way to treat your friends
Wow. Isn't this the same strategy that Obama sugeested and McOld accused him of being naive.

Obama 08 !!
Why does McCain think we need to be the world's policeman, referee or savior. If someone attacks the U.S. defend ourselves of course, find those responsible and and kick butt if necessary. We have various pacts with other nations where we agree to help defend these friends if they are attacked. That is fine as well. But who says we have to enter into these policing actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and perhaps Iran or even Pakistan. We cannot be the world's policeman. We have people here in our own country losing their homes, sleeping under bridges or living out of their cars. Our public educational system sucks. We need better facilities, more teachers and higher pay for teachers. There is a health care crises in this country. People are losing their jobs and can't affor gas to search for new jobs. Yet we are spending billions trying to police countries we have no business policing. McCain may poll higher then Obama among voters on foreign policy (God knows why as it appears McCain, and the Bush Administration are beginning to copy Obama's foreign policy proposals)), but hopefully most voters will come to realize it is the home front we should be worrying about now. And that is where Obama has it all over McCain.
