Obama: Don't mess with the messiah!

Posted: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 9:17 AM by Mark Murray

On that New Yorker cover, Obama told CNN's Larry King: "You know, there are wonderful Muslim Americans all across the country who are doing wonderful things. And for this to be used as sort of an insult, or to raise suspicions about me, I think is unfortunate. And it's not what America's all about."

VIDEO: A Hardball panel debates whether the controversial New Yorker cover showing Barack Obama in Muslim garb is satire or slur.

Maureen Dowd uses the New Yorker cover as a springboard to ask: Why can’t we laugh at Obama? “At first blush, it would seem to be a positive for Obama that he is hard to mock. But on second thought, is it another sign that he’s trying so hard to be perfect that it’s stultifying? Or that eight years of W. and Cheney have robbed Democratic voters of their sense of humor?”

“Certainly, as the potential first black president, and as a contender with tender experience, Obama must feel under strain to be serious. But he does not want the ‘take’ on him to become that he’s so tightly wrapped, overcalculated and circumspect that he can’t even allow anyone to make jokes about him, and that his supporters are so evangelical and eager for a champion to rescue America that their response to any razzing is a sanctimonious: Don’t mess with our messiah!”

Maureen Dowd - "...he has not been flayed by the sort of ridicule that diminished Dukakis, Gore and Kerry."

And this is a bad thing?

The type of ridicule she seems to like resulted in her buddies, Bush I & II's election and I have no trouble with contending that aside from MoDo's bank account, the world has not prospered under their leadership.

We are not all here for your amusement Maureen.
Maureen Dowd? C'mon, why is FR wasting time with this? Sure, Dowd is very occasionally capable of good snark, but she has no other mode and her pieces show all the depth of Abbott's Flatland. If we're going to talk about the opinions of a liberal female NYT columnist, couldn't we look at Gail Collins instead?
Its funny how Obaama thinks wearing Muslim GArb or being depicted as wearing muslim garb is an insult he cant run far enough away from his heritage. Yea a half white kid from Kansas getting (6% of the black vote some people will take anything that remotely suits them and cling to it he will not be the first black president he will be tyhe first half white half african to be president get used to it its a done deal according to MADCOW and CO. on MSNBZZZZZZ
Lets face it women should be seen and not heard SWEETIE just ask Obamma and Hilliary SWEETIE.
Evangelical is the right word wait till you see what they do on ABORTION and GAY RIGHTS ever see how the blacks treat gays horrible and homophobic how about gay marriges does his new church marry gay people, women better come up with a reason Obamma likes if they want an abortion send some of that faith based money to my church The CHURCH of ME we all think and act like ME how much and aWHEN can I expect my checks ,you guys made a big mistake should have taken the devil you knew HILLIARY
The problem with the front page of the New Yorker is it is perpetuating a lie.  Obama is not a muslim. It is as simple as that.  You know if that picture had been inside a tv screen with the Fox News label at the bottom that would have been funny.  People would have understood that better.
Mister Anderson (The Matrix)and Linda. Boston, MA - you are both so right.  Only Chris Mathews had the nerve to say he thought it was not right.  It's amazing how all the other reporters and journalists want to "stick together" and not say the New Yorker was wrong.  Well, they were.
