First thoughts: Obama going abroad

*** Obama going abroad: Is Obama making the right call by heading to Europe and the Middle East at a time of such economic insecurity in the US? The answer is yes if you look at the latest Washington Post/ABC poll, which has Obama up eight points (50%-42%) among registered voters. While he beats McCain on the economy by a whopping 19 points, Obama doesn’t fare as well when it comes to foreign policy. “While 56 percent of respondents said Obama knows enough about world affairs to be a good president, 72 percent said so about McCain. Head to head, McCain was judged as the one with greater knowledge of the world by more than 2 to 1. The senator from Arizona also holds a narrow edge as the candidate better suited to deal with an unexpected major crisis, and he is more trusted, by a six-point margin, on the issue of fighting terrorism.” Obama’s trip abroad could be a disaster. But if it proves to be a success and if it narrows McCain’s edge on foreign policy, then doesn’t one assume that eight-point lead becomes larger? Arguably, in 1980, Reagan had a narrow lead over Carter because of the economy. But he was still struggling on the commander-in-chief stuff, and when he finally passed that test, he turned his narrow lead into a landslide victory.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd discusses today's political headlines including the new Washington Post/ABC poll that has Barack Obama leading John McCain by eight points among registered voters.

*** Also worth noting: There are a couple of more things worth noting from the Washington Post/ABC poll. One, it appears that a bigger turnout benefits Obama. While the Illinois senator has an eight-point lead among registered voters, his edge is much smaller when you reduce the race to likely voters (49%-46%). (And right now, pollsters will tell you that with older voters leaning McCain these days, any likely voter model is going to favor McCain for now. If Obama moves younger voters as well as many observers assume come October, the likely voter numbers could change). In this poll, when you expand it to include all adults, Obama’s lead is 12 points (51%-39%). And two, 79% in the poll believe that Obama is an optimist versus 54% who say that about McCain. How many times has the more pessimistic candidate won a presidential election?

*** Crank up the VP chatter: Obama makes his first post-primary appearance in Indiana today, when he heads to Purdue University to hold a summit on confronting 21st century threats like nuclear proliferation, bioterrorism, and cyber-security. And in the process, he’ll be hanging out with two Dems who are likely to be on someone’s short list: Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn. While it's not surprising to have Bayh attend an Obama event in Indiana, the appearance of Sam Nunn might raise an eyebrow or two... The topic, of course, is one of Nunn's pets, and Nunn-Lugar is synonymous with this issue. The Obama press corps hasn't spent much time with Nunn in person, so he's auditioning today -- at least for the press.

*** Hoosier battleground: With Obama in Indiana today, it’s as good of a time as any to talk about the state. Could it be this year's West Virginia -- meaning, like West Virginia in 2000, will the state end up swinging against its CW history following what its neighboring states have done for the last 20 years? A Democrat hasn’t won Indiana since 1964, but polls we’ve seen suggest the race there is pretty darn close. What’s more, the state is one of those battlegrounds (in addition to Pennsylvania and North Carolina) in which the long primary season might benefit Obama. Per NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann, as of last week, Obama had made 26 campaign stops in the state in 20 days, versus two stops for McCain. And if Bayh is added to Obama’s ticket…? Then again, Bush beat Kerry here in 2004, 60%-39%. And in 2000, he won the state, 57%-41%. Still, Indiana has had the same economic issues as its neighboring states of Ohio and Michigan. Moreover, Dems now hold a majority of the state's congressional seats, meaning there will be a lot more Dem money and organization in the state than ever before. The one thing McCain has going for him is that incumbent GOP Gov. Mitch Daniels appears to have pulled out of his funk and seems to be favored for re-election.

*** Before a tough crowd: While Obama is in Indiana today, McCain is doing something many GOP nominees wouldn't do -- and that's speak in front of the NAACP. (Yet it’s worth noting that McCain and every GOP presidential contender besides Tancredo didn’t speak to the group last year.) This excerpt from his speech explains why McCain believes he should be there: "As much as any other group in America, the NAACP has been at the center of that great and honorable cause. I’m here today as an admirer and a fellow American, an association that means more to me than any other. I am a candidate for president who seeks your vote and hopes to earn it. But whether or not I win your support, I need your goodwill and counsel. And should I succeed, I’ll need it all the more. I have always believed in this country, in a good America, a great America. But I have always known we can build a better America, where no place or person is left without hope or opportunity by the sins of injustice or indifference. It would be among the great privileges of my life to work with you in that cause." Per NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, also expect McCain to lavish extensive and detailed praise on Obama. President Bush spoke to the NAACP when he was a candidate in 2000, but didn’t reappear before the group until 2006.

VIDEO: Is John McCain too old to be president? Guest host David Shuster gets the latest reaction from GOP strategist Kevin Madden, Democratic analyst Tonya Acker and MSNBC analyst Carl Crawford.

*** Czech it out: Yesterday, Obama strategist Robert Gibbs fired off an email to reporters noting that McCain had changed his position on gay adoption and troops for Afghanistan, and that he referred to the Czech Republic as Czechoslovakia -- for the second time in two days. Of course, Czechoslovakia hasn’t existed since 1990s. It was far from a campaign-killing mistake. But it comes after other McCain gaffes, like mixing up Sunnis and Shiites and incorrectly stating that the US troop presence in Iraq has dipped below its pre-surge level. The Czechoslovakia gaffe also advances this narrative, especially when you combine it with the news over the weekend that he doesn't use a computer: McCain is more of a 20th-century presidential candidate rather than a 21st-century one. This is not an issue for McCain re: age; it's an issue for McCain re: the future. One of the few things Mark Penn got right in his presidential analysis during the campaign was that voters care about the future, not the past. (Now, had he listened to his own advice, he wouldn't have forced HRC to run for Bill's third term, but we digress.) Candidates who seem to be focused on the future usually end up on top. Interestingly, McCain is doing this on Iraq. He's gotten some traction on the issue, because he's moved the debate away from talking about how we got in and instead focused the debate on what to do now. He needs to shift his entire campaign into future mode. Obama, simply because of the historical nature of his campaign, already has that future feel. And just asking: Why haven’t we seen these kind of Gibbs emails before?

*** On the trail: McCain is in Cincinnati, OH, where he speaks to the NAACP annual convention before heading to Nebraska to raise money. Obama, meanwhile, is in Indiana attending the “Summit on Confronting 21st Century Threats.”

This just in from the McCain campaign, thanks to feedback from our fellow citizens on desirable destinations for the Senator’s upcoming global fact-finding trip:   John McCain to add stops in Constantinople and Alsace Lorraine to his previously announced tour of Czechoslovakia, Rhodesia, the Ottaman Empire, and the Countship of Flanders.   The Senator also commented that “as a former Navy man, I am doing everything in my power to arrange a visit with the leadership of Atlantis.”  In related news today, McCain surrogate Joe Lieberman attacked Obama for not having not visited Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey.
First Read:  McCain has also noted that Putin is the Prime Minister of Germany, which is news to most Russians, Germans, and EVERYONE else paying attention to global affairs.
mccant will send you , your wife, your kids and grandkids to WAR for oil but it will be the wrong war the wrong place for the wrong reasons with the wrong tactics so if that makes you feel safe go for it.
Obama is finally going on his Big Adventure! It took a while for McCain to goat him into this trip, but McCain has shown that Obama is his puppet. Is Michelle going? She'll need to keep the shopping thing down a bit, the exchange rate is not good, and she still has student loans to pay off

Next is for McCain to swing Barack over to agree that we need to start more drilling for oil. Two, three weeks tops to get that done.
i wish mccain could stop talking about a no existent country, he should update himself on what going on in the world.  How come I don't hear a lot of talk Tom Kaine as VP?

Will the MSM start asking why George Bush and John McCain are "refining their positions" on Iran and Afghanistan to reflect Obama's long held positions?
it appears that a bigger turnout benefits Obama.
---------------------------------------

That's why in Republican-controlled areas we'll be seeing voting machines mysteriously breaking down and long lines of black voters and student voters in college towns giving up and leaving without voting. That's what happened in 2004 and it will happen again.

And then the media will enthuse about what a masterful campaign that Karl Rove ran for McCain.
It's bad when things change and we don't keep up with those changes...I hope McCain doesn't bomb Mexico for the attack at the Alamo...
While Uncle Fluffy's campaign may try their best to hit Obama for not traveling to Europe and the Middle East enough at least Obama will know where he is when he gets there.

Czechoslovakia...HAH!!!
Ever notice that what Mark Murray puts up here in FR is more balanced and fair to Obama?  Check out the rest of today's posts, and then compare them with the obvoius slant from Chuck T or Domenico posts.
With likely voters, the race is essentially tied. Obama should be winning by double digits, but yet McCain, with all his faults, is hanging in there. People like Barack's personal story, the fact that he's a minority, and that fact that he's young. But when they start looking what he's actually accomplished (nothing) and where he's positioned politically (extreme far left liberal activist), those things turn voters off. America is slightly right of center politically. McCain is there, Obama is not.
Your theory about the difference between likely voters and registered voters is unsound. The Quinnipiac poll has Obama beating McCain by 9 points among LIKELY voters (50 to 41), more than the WaPo poll has him up among registered voters.  Zogby has Obama winning by 7 points among likely voters (47 to 40).
SENILE OLD MCFLIPFLOP does not have the mental capacity to be President.  His brain is half mush and he has the mental ability of a 3rd grader (or George W. Bush which is the same thing).  The SENILE OLD man is too dangerous to be President of the United States.
GRRRRR....Morning Shill was at it again yesterday...

In response to that stupid ABC/WP (hah, ABC - who'da thunk it?) poll...

They did not ask who would be a better CIC in a head to head match up - they asked who would make a good CIC.  Heck, I could have voted for McSame to be a good CIC, but that doesn't mean that's who I am going to vote for!  How STOOPID do these media people think we are?  Pretty d___ stupid, apparently.

I also heard Rick Davis yesterday slamming Obama on being in Europe while McDude is in "the heartland" learning about what is bothering them.  The implication was that Obama didn't care about "the heartland".

HELLO?!  Wasn't McDon't out of the country during the flooding?  Pot, meet kettle.

I am SO sick of this d___ election already.  Let's vote already and be done with it.
"Obama’s trip abroad could be a disaster. But if it proves to be a success and if it narrows McCain’s edge on foreign policy, then doesn’t one assume that eight-point lead becomes larger? "

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Dramatic much? A disaster? Good grief guys - settle down a bit . . . I don't think going to another country to meet with their leaders is going to be either a "disaster" or a big chance to move up in the polls. It's just a trip abroad folks. Let's not set the expectations so impossibly high.

John McCain has been on several foreign trips and his poll numbers haven't moved much. What makes you think the Obama trips will be any different?

P.S. On why you haven't seen the Gibbs emails before - who knew you all had to be prompted to do your jobs?
Surprised that McC didn't say "build a more perfect union" instead of "better America".  He's been stealing everything else that Obama comes up with.
MichIndiOhians have to the best reguards for the GOP. Seeing the GOP in their rear view mirror tells them they'll be glad to avoided that mess again...
Obama's trip abroad will be not only a success but an eye opener to whatever portion of the public feels he is not ready for the world stage.

His reception is predicted to be warm and enthusiastic. I have no doubt he will handle himself with class and dignity and show that the positive influence of a respected world leader goes a very long way.
Obama going abroad is a good thing.  What he has been doing since the primaries is to make himself less of a target and going to Europe and the Middle East will help him in the "Commander-in-Chief category.  As far as not being here to talk about the economy. The economy will only get worse and there is lots of time to talk about it.

Special credit goes to Chris Matthews last night for holding racist Pat Buchanan's feet to the fire. Buchanan should never be called an analyst as he is simply a political hack. Pat calling the day a victory for McCain because MeCain said he knows how to win wars is simply political garbage.  Chris saw it and called him on it.

Check it out.  It's not an education issue. DEMENTIA.

Chuck Todd is right on about Indiana being "damn close".  Naturally I think Obama will win in Indiana.  It could be the Flordia of 2008. I hope not. But it will be close.  Obama's lead of 6 to 9 points is about right.  Michigan and Penn are must win states for Obama and they are in his column.

Expect more gaffes from McOld.  The debate which focuses on the economy will be a clear win for Obama.
The media will spin a tie on the foreign policy/war debate, but the issue will be depth of insight.
It would really add to first read if posts were broken up into single topics. The way it is now really detracts from the coversation threads. I develop web apps & other cms/blogs allow items to be published based on time. So you can write once/day but look like you wrote every hour.
"As much as any other group in America, the NAACP has been at the center of that great and honorable cause. I’m here today as an admirer and a fellow American, an association that means more to me than any other."
- John McCain
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
HUH? Who knew that John McCain loved the NAACP so much? He will make a great Panderer in Chief - I hear he served with a Mexican American in the military too - what a guy!
That's really true---mcCain is a 20th Century candidate, forever going on about the '60s, (which he sometimes confuses with the '80s)his experience in the LAST stupid war, and other blasts from the past.  Obama is all future, all the time.
I had to laugh at Moron Joke this am going over all the things McCain did in Vietnam as an argument for why African Americans should vote for him. Their answer to that, I'd guess (being white, I can only guess) would be "What's this rich old white guy done for US...LATELY?"
A question for my fellow posters (and I'm hoping to make this as non-partisan as possible):

Is it bad form to portray Sen. McCain as a doddering fool? (I purposely didn't say "old" for a reason.)

From the Czechoslovakia gaffe to the misunderstanding of historical tensions among subsects of Sunni and Shi'a Islam, McCain has been dropping the ball right and left on well-known worldwide issues. Now, back in 2000, President Bush had the same problem (though he knew enough to correct McCain on Czechoslovakia then); and people have since portrayed Bush as a doddering idiot. Yet, if someone seeks to be the leader of the free world, should mistakes on basic world issues be fair game? If not, why not?
1. McCain not knowing how to use a computer isn't "news"; it's been out there for quite a while.

2. Gibbs is now writing these emails because his job changed in the recent Obama staff moves.

Do try to keep up, will you?
Here is mccains problem with the naacp and minorities in general...large swaths of his own party are either overtly racist or at the very least nativitist which to them usually means white, christian and poorly educated...uh not black, latino or oriental
HOW in the world can people think that McFossil would be a better commander-in-chief than Obama when he
mixes up Sunnis and Shiites and incorrectly states that the US troop presence in Iraq had dipped below its pre-surge level. Then there's the Czechoslovakia gaffe. He doesn't even realize Czechoslovakia hasn't existed since 1990. THIS is what people think makes a better commander-in-chief??? Obama has been RIGHT about foreign policy all along. We should have NEVER gone into Iraq and taken our eye off Afghanistan. Look at what is happening there today? More US soldiers are being killed there than in Iraq. Obama is also RIGHT about talking to Iran. Did anyone see this morning that Bush is NOW going to send someone to talk to Iran????? Haven't they constantly said Obama was naive about THAT, too? Obama has better judgment over and over again. Why don't people SEE that? McFossil should NOT be polling at 72% over this issue. People are just plain stupid.
Is Obama making the correct move going abroad ?

Let me ask another question. Is it wise to gather a renewal compromise from a constituency living abroad and smooth out democracy contradictions in and about FOREIGN POLICY.
Obama and McCain are really fighting it out now. It seems that they are very evenly matched right now. But you won't believe these polling results!

Chuck, NY -- Chuck, Domenico, and I all contribute in writing the morning First Read posts. However, Domenico and I take turns posting it on the site. Thanks for reading and posting!
Don't forget to add this McCain gaffe to the growing list:  Joe Lieberman whispering the correction in his ear after more than once confusing "Al Quaeda in Iraq" with "Iran" as the foreign power supplying Iraqi insurgents with weapons. Combine a short temper with creeping senility and you get... Oh no!  You get my grandfather! Trust me - guys like him defintely should NOT be President!
Seventy-two percent say McCain knows enough about world affairs. That number can only go down as the media confronts the awkward possibility that, despite being a multi-term senator, McCain might not know very much at all.

That shift is coming. The media has been cautious to date. But all these gaffes will keep building, until the pressure on the media to label what they're continually seeing as "ignorance" becomes too great.

We're already hearing the canaries on this. Jim Kramer, a stock market analyst as opposed to a political commentator, seemingly feels less compelled to tread lightly. After hearing McCain talk about Social Security, he was caught on the air asking if the senator knows anything.

Obviously Social Security isn't foreign policy and world affairs, but his gaffes and flip-flops in these areas have been no less awkward.

At some point, if this continues the media as a whole will feel compelled to question whether McCain isn't in over his head.
Mr. Todd did a fine job avoiding those 'racial hand-grenades' that Ms. Brewer attempted to lob this morning.  I'm glad that you stated the fact that Democrats usually always trail in the white vote and haven't won it since LBJ.  Not even Bubba won the white vote.  Then Contessa made the obvious pivot to patriotism.  Once again you were able to debunk that because of the 3 choices people were given and the fact that because of Sen. McCain's military service, he gets a boost.

I see that today will probably be a continuation of "Why can't Obama close the racial gulf?" but hopefully people will have at least watched your analysis and learned something.  The MSM still seems reluctant to cover McCain's numerous gaffes but I'm assuming that sooner or later a critical mass will be released.  Btw what ever happened to the Iranian fake missile launch story or Iraqis wanting us to draw up a timetable for withdrawal story?  I guess those "unimportant" stories don't fit the script.
I also heard Rick Davis yesterday slamming Obama on being in Europe while McDude is in "the heartland" learning about what is bothering them.  The implication was that Obama didn't care about "the heartland".
-------------------------------------
MI Chick: Obama already knows.  Remember?  They cling to their guns and religion and they're bigots.  Why should he spend more time with them when, as the Messiah, he knows everything about everybody.
No Nashville fan, I think you are confused.  McCain did not serve WITH a Mexican-Amercican, he served IN the Mexican-American War.  :-)
Diane from Illinois: HOW in the world can people think that McFossil would be a better commander-in-chief

Because John McCain is a hero, and Barack Obama is a coward. McCain will do everything he can to protect the country, and Obama will do everything he can to appease his various political groups.

Now you know.
. Gibbs is now writing these emails because his job changed in the recent Obama staff moves.
----------------------
OMG, Rita Forte, staff moves by Obama?  OMG, the campaign must be ready to self-implode.  OMG, you know it's like you Obamatots said when HRC and McCain made staff changes.  It MUST mean things are really, really bad in Obama camp.  OMG, he made a change, how can he be CIC if he has to make a staff change?  The sky is falling...
I like most Democrats, but I absolutely despise Obama.  He's too inexperienced, arrogant, and naive to be a senator, let alone President.  McCain is the only Republican I've ever respected.  I disagree with McCain about the war, but I'm much more concerned with domestic issues like ethanol subsidies and reducing government spending and waste.  Obama's only appeal to me is his stance on ending the war in Iraq, but that's not enough for me to vote for him.  McCain may lose big in more liberal states, but he will lose the election in the working class and midwestern states.
Obama's only real achievements of national significance in his entire career have been media achievements and rhetorical achievements.  His greatest achievement has been running as a candidate with an image wholly incompatible with what he has actually been doing for decades. This man who is now supposedly going to "unite" us has for years worked hand in glove, and contributed both his own money and the taxpayers' money, to people who have sought to divide us in the most crude demagogic ways.
When are we going to hear more about McCain's major FLIP-FLOP on Afganistan?

I one day we saw Bush & McCain moving towards Obama's positions on Afganistan and Iran.  So much for the so-called experienced candidate who mistakes trips/junkets to sound foreign policy judgement.
I always knew that with Obama winning the nomination, we will know where people REALLY stand on progressive or conservative issues/policies now what we have an individual who does not 'fit the mold' running.  Over the past few weeks, I have seen Dan Rather (on MSNBC Morning Joe) and Ted Koppel (on ABC This Week) sounding like Republican operatives.  Dan Rather was providing advice on how McCain can defeat Obama.  On ABC, Ted Koppel gave the impression that staying in Iraq is a sign of strength.  On CNN, Bill Bennet was more concillatory to Obama regarding the New Yorker cartoon than James Carville.

In addition, I have spent almost 10 years as a legal resident of USA.  I'm not really surprised to see Obama's comments get far more scrutinized than McCain's, even when their statements carry the same weight.  My professional experience so far in USA has taught me to know that whenever you see an individual who does not 'fit the mold' in a position, that person is twice better than a counterpart who 'fits the mold'.

It's surprising that Obama is not getting much help from Democrats in the face of coordinated attack from the GOP.  To the extent that McCain can even run an ad portraying himself as more 'Green' than Obama.  GOPers like Pat Buchanan and Tucker Carlson have basically stated that McCain does not have any issues to run on except to attack Obama.

Is that how a great country like USA will pick its leader who will also be the leader of the free world?  One whose only platform is to attack an opponent and not offer any solutions to problems facing real people?
Obama will lose if the issue of adequate quantity and quality of voting machines isn't raised and brought out into the open NOW, so that we can ensure a fair election, where black districts and districts favoring young college aged voters, are given an adequate number of working voting machines.  I wouldn't be surprised if alla Rove, black districts will get 1 voting machine per 100,000 residents, and that machine breaks down after every other voter, while a white district with 1000 residents gets 100 machines that "work", i.e, always producing a "vote" for McCain.

WATCH OUT FOR MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD IN NOVEMBER THANKS TO THE REPUKES!!!!!
I wonder what would happen to the numbers if the economy starts recovering.  Would Obama's lead evaporate if the country starting feeling better about things?  Would we then focus on Iraq and foreign policy exclusively?

If anything starts driving the price of oil down -- whether it's from OPEC or from our own govt cracking down on speculation -- I could easily see that allowing the economy to improve.   If the economy does start recovering and the surge continues to "work", then what happens to Obama's lead?

Just asking....
McCain talks about foreign affairs knowledge.

The facts show McCain is terrible at it.
For 15 years, he's proven he doesn't even know Czechoslovakia is no longer a country.  Twice this week, he's made the same mistake.

A few months ago, McCain proved his lack of knowledge about the middle east when he repeatedly confused Shiite and Sunni.  Even after McCain was corrected, he went back to making the same mistake.

Earlier this month, McCain said things are going well in Afghanistan and we don't need to send more troops there.  After years of repeating this, yesterday McCain said more troops are needed in Afghanistan and that Afghanistan is the military front on terror (Something Obama has been arguing for since before the Iraq war started.)
Chuck, NY -- Chuck, Domenico, and I all contribute in writing the morning First Read posts. However, Domenico and I take turns posting it on the site. Thanks for reading and posting!
Mark Murray (Sent Wednesday, July 16, 2008 9:57 AM)

Can you do something about the comments on this site?  They seem to take forever to get posted, if at all.  You guys should really change your comment system over to a new system like Huffington Post or others, where you can have a more instant posting system.  Or at least turn off the approval system... I'm not sure what you are screening out because tons of garbage gets through.  I posted on the "3 New Polls" post right after it went up and there are still just 3 posts in it, same as when I posted.
Obama going abroad...... could be a good thing.
He may not come back if we're lucky !
I don't think you can tell from the WP poll who the public thinks would be better at foreign policy...

2 of 3 say Mac knows more about the world, while
2 of 3 say Obama would be better at restoring America's name in the world...
WHY would Obama's trip abroad be a "disaster"?  They sell freaking t-shirts of the man on city squares ALL OVER THE WORLD.  He's going to draw crowds unlike anything he's drawn here.  I think it will be pretty incredible stuff.
Why is the MSM portending doom for Obama's trip abroad? I'm so excited about watching the way the world receives him. McCain and the MSM have been making snarky comments about the fact that Obama hasn't been to Iraq in two years; now that he's planning to go there and elsewhere, the same people are questioning his wisdom in going. Cut it out, please. You sound like you have multiple personality disorder. Honestly.

As for the veepstakes, please let me know when someone is selected. The same spin about the same potential VPs is wearying.

Finally, McCain IS old. Of course he can't remember as much as he used to.
I knew that once Hillary was defeated by the media that its next target would be Obama, trusting the media to be fair is like trusting the nieghbors attack dog to leave your children alone.
It is in their best interest to bloody the water so that they have something to talk about, remember that they need controversy, these are the same people that gave Bush a free ride for the last few years.
Obama, is not going abroad, because McCain is forcing him to..  When are people going to wake up and realize Obama has a plan for the primary Lied out, and his following his plan....  Funny  Bush and McCain seem to be following O' PLAN now a days.
