McCain camp pre-buts Obama trip

From NBC's Mark Murray
Before Obama heads on his trip to the Middle East and Europe, the McCain campaign is trying to pre-but his travel. McCain foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann has fired off a memo to reporters arguing that Obama is putting politics before country, suggesting that he wants to "lose" the war, even comparing him to Donald Rumsfeld.

VIDEO: In a conference call on Wednesday, the McCain foreign policy advisory Randy Scheunemann said the American people can't afford to replace on administration that refused to acknowledge failure in Iraq with a "candidate that refused to acknowledge success in Iraq." Newsweek's Richard Wolffe talks about these claims.

Excerpts: "When it wasn't popular, John McCain said he would rather win a war that we were losing than win an election. Politics came second; country came first. Barack Obama has determined that he would rather lose a war that we are winning than lose an election by alienating his base. This is the reason Obama did not have to wait until his trip to declare his strategy. Iraq is fundamentally a political decision for Barack Obama, not a national security decision."

And: "The American people deserve a commander-in-chief who puts their country first ahead of party, politics and self-interest. Time after time, that is what John McCain has done and what Barack Obama has failed to do. We cannot afford to replace a Rumsfeld strategy that refused for too long to acknowledge failure in Iraq with an Obama strategy that refuses to acknowledge success in Iraq."

In addition, the McCain camp has rounded up GOP Sens. Richard Burr, Jon Kyl and John Thune, as well as Reps. Marsha Blackburn and Eric Cantor to unveil a video later this morning entitled "The Obama Iraq Documentary: Whatever the Politics Demand."

Is it just me, or does this reek of desperation?  Man, they are going to hate those large crowds meeting Obama in Europe.
This from the McCain camp while AZ continues to turn more purple? McCain as 26 years of changing his mind - maybe he should try 'the Google' to find out the real number of how many times he sucked up to Bush in the past 4 years, just to get where he is now - the GOP nominee.  The 2000 McCain would spit at the 2008 McCain.
The American People deserved not to have been lied to by the current administration...and this collection of McCain Idiots!!
So, McSame has been bashing Obama for months because he hasn't spent enough time in the Middle East, now he's going to bash him for going there.  So much for that pledge to run a clean campaign.
Riiiiiiiight. Nice try.

More of the same hoodwinking from the neocons.
Petty, petty statement.

To follow the McCain camp's logic to its bizarre conclusion, no candidate could make any statement about policy prior to current travel to the geography in which that policy pertains.

Obama has been a candidate for president since February 2007. But the McCain criticism is that Obama reiterated his position on the Iraq war before his trip to Europe and the Middle East now - a trip made possible only because of the pre-convention lull in which we now find ourselves.

So McCain falls back on the old strategy - attack the patriotism of his opponent. McCain states he is the only one putting country first. His proof? Obama has a different position on the Iraq war.

Logically, its a laughable position. Its presuming your opinion is correct, and accepted as correct by the wider audience and opponent alike. Therefore, any deviation from that opinion by anyone must point to alterior motive. Simply laughable.

Perhaps the most legitimate response would be to ask McCain when he's traveling to Czechoslavakia.
the mccain camp is getting desperate

I think it's going to be hard for people to appreciate obama in the u.s election. He should really do something about a solution to stop the war in the middle east.
EUROPE LOVES OBAMA!!  they're not so hot for Mc Ancient......
I have to honestly ask....are they serious with this attack?

To what end do they really keep trying to link Obama to Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld? It's laughable and sad at the same time.

Is it me or is the JUST PLAIN RIDICULOUS?
Dear McCain Campaign:

Enough with the spin, spin, spin. It's not working - check out the polls.

I seem to remember another occasion when Senator Obama was accused of playing politics with war - turned out that was a lie too.

Remember when Senator Obama sounded the alarm about our forgotten troops in Afghanistan back at the February debates with a story about an Army Captain whose platoon couldn't get needed supplies because they were all sent to Iraq? And he was accused of making it up?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/24/afghanistans-soldiers-ba_n_88171.html

Senator Obama was right. John McCain was wrong. YET AGAIN!
Memo to McWar;  the American people (i.e. your prospective bosses) HATE this war!  Not the warriors (who, after all are family), but THE WAR!  How many of us can tell off our prospective bosses in a job interview and get away with it?
So Obama's base that he is trying not to alienate consists of the 68% to 70% of Americans who oppose the war? Ok..I'll take that.
If anyone knows about putting politics first, it's certainly John McCain, who has basically abandoned his own policies, bills, and instincts in hopes of winning this race.

Funny how the pot sees the kettle.

You know the sad part is, that there are some people that will believe and even Parrot the McBush talking points as dumb as they are. The one thing I do like about Democrats we dont always agree . So we dont sound like a bunch of babbling spoon fed baby Parrots.
McCain is the real "little jerk" and it seems he loves to surround himself with lots of little jerks.  What a total loser!!
I am positive that McCain's "MEDIA" base will cover the attacks on Obama.
thank you for FINALLY reporting the crazy rantings of Mr. Scheunemann.  Now you should print a little something about his past, and his role in crafting the Iraq invasion.

'...Hudson solicited sex from an 18-year-old woman...'

From Salon.com:

'...Catholic group asks McCain camp to drop controversial figure

A Catholic group has written to John McCain to ask him to remove Deal Hudson from the Catholics for McCain National Steering Committee because of allegations that, in 1994, Hudson solicited sex from an 18-year-old woman who was a student in one of his classes at Fordham University.

ABC News' Political Radar blog was first to the story of the letter, which came from a group called Catholics United. The organization describes itself as non-partisan and says it has 20,000 members.

"As you are most likely unaware, Mr. Hudson was forced to resign as the chair of the Republican National Committee's catholic outreach effort in 2004 after allegations that he had solicited an improper sexual encounter... Deal Hudson is not the type of Catholic leader that you want associated with your campaign" the letter says, according to Political Radar...'

Hey !!
What ever happened to John Hagee ?
Wasn't he a McCain supporter, too ??

How about Rod Parsley ?
Didn't he want to destroy Islam ?
Just like Franklin Graham....
(son o' Billy)
He thinks Isalm is 'evil'

John McCain has a cast of 'characters' supporting him....

John McCain, There's no Fool like an old Fool
Maybe somebody at MSNBC can do a profile on "McCain foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann" and let people know exactly what who this man has been in bed with regarding Iraq and the run up to war. That is, you know, if there isn't another magazine cover or black man saying something bad about another black man that takes up the whole freakin' news.
Perhaps the most legitimate response would be to ask McCain when he's traveling to Czechoslavakia.

Paul Miller:  He'll go as soon as Obama gets back from visiting all 57 of our states. So, I'd guess it will be a while!
At least Obama can find Europe. McCain would be spending a lot of time driving around looking for Czechoslovakia.
What I don't understand is why does the media only ever give McCain talking points?  Never the other side, has anyone else noticed this or is it just me, that First Read seems to keep kissing McCain's butt at every chance it gets?  After 7 years of Bush policies and republican blunders if you think I would believe one word out of any republicans mouth you have another thing comming.  Tell me one issue the republicans have told the truth about in the past 7 years?  Honestly can anyone tell me or show me one istance when this republican party has told the truth?  Remember, No Child Left Behind was going to solve education, the Medicare drug program wouldn't be that expensive, the Iraq war would pay for itself we would be greated as liberators and when they asked us to leave we would, should I keep going, oh then there is the FEMA mess with Katrina, which is still a mess, oh, Valeri Plame, Guantanimo, oil prices, the economy.  Geez, there is just to many to get through.  If anyone is really considering voting for any republican in the fall they need a labotomy.
Ah, Mr. Shuenemann, didn't you get the sweetness, and light memo from your pandering candidate yesterday? Senator McCain said that "ALL Americans should be proud of Senator Obama"! You give the impression that he's a liar. Not good; not good at all.

***********************************

The fundraising news for Senator Obama, and the Dnc has me in tears.

I was worried whether it was going well.

G-D bless the DNC. They willingly, no, enthusiastically followed Barack's edict to discontinue taking lobbyist's money. They bit the bullet, did it, and now are reaping the rich rewards of trusting their new leader, as well as, we the people.

G-D bless America.
'...When it wasn't popular, John McCain said he would rather win a war that we were losing than win an election...'

John McCain is in NO DANGER of doing EITHER !!

John McCain, Bush's 3rd term
can you please talk about Scheunmann's role in the Committee for the LIberation of Iraq?
The American people deserve a CIC who is intelligent, has good judgement, and has some connection and understanding of what Americans actually want. Someone who will take into cosideration what "we the people" of our great country would like to achieve as a nation. All attributes which mccain does not have.
These war mongers careless about America. This country is at the verge of bankruptcy, spending 10 Billion Dollars per month in IRAQ. Dollar bill is virtually worthless. American is becoming a Third World country. What is wrong with these these chicken hawk republicans?  Please, please chase them to Mars in November.

McCain the Time Traveler. A new slogan:

McCain - Leading us forward into the past.
This is just not a logical argument. If their had been WMDs or Saddam had been discovered to have ties to Al Qeida the GOP argument would have some foundation. But their were no WMDs, no connection to Al Qeida, there was no reason for the invasion. It was a shiny object the Bush administration used to show the American people he was doing something after 9/11. America is losing the war just because we are there under false pretenses. Just because you can subjugate an entire country through military might does not mean you have the obligation to do so. We were wrong, we were lied to, every American that dies is another disgrace, every Iraqi that dies is a war crime. When did America become right just because we could destroy your country? History clearly shows what happens those that oppress, people fight back, they do not allow their oppressors to have a single day free to not regret the decision to intimidate and subjugate.

WE MUST LEAVE IRAQ.
I'd like to think that Senator McCain's point of patriotism is correct.  However, what better way to show patriotism than to support the soldiers and the vets.  On the second piece, dude has a dismal record as it relates to veteran affairs.  But, don't take my word for it, look it up yourself.
When it comes to his voting record and him claiming to be supported by all veterans groups, that is simply false.  This would be obvious because even back in 2000 veterans groups have been the most critical of McCain’s voting record.
1. The IAVA (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans for America) has given McCain a D and Obama a B+ when it comes to their veteran voting record. I should also mention that Obama is on the veteran affairs committee.
2. He definitely isn’t getting any support from VoteVets.org.
3. The Vietnam Veterans of Americasays McCain has voted against them in 15 key votes. I should also  note the Obama only voted against them once.
4. The Disabled Veterans of Americagave McCain a 20% rating while Obama got an 80% rating on their voting records from this organization

On the Issue of veterans health care
1. McCain voted Nay on a bill that would “To increase Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.” (click here).
2. Also a bill that would, “To provide an additional $500,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2006 through 2010, to be used for readjustment counseling, related mental health services, and treatment and rehabilitative services for veterans with mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, or substance use disorder.” McCain voted against, see here.
3. In 2006 McCain voted against a bill that would, “To support the health needs of our veterans and military personnel and reduce the deficit by making tax rates fairer for all Americans.” (click here).
Trust me there’s much more he voted against when it came to veterans issues.  If you want to see his voting record on a whole host of issues then go to ProJect Vote Smart.

http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=53270

But the bottom line is, this was a war we should never have started, and it seems that since we didn't finish the job in Vietnam, McCain wants to finish the job in Iraq, no matter the costs - human, financially, politically, etc.  At some point, he has to realize that the cost is too much.
This is so freaking stupid it's baffling.

First off you want to know why we are "losing" the war McCain?  BECAUSE WE ARE HUNDREDS OF MILES AWAY FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. Lets apply McCain's strategy to Vietnam...how many more would be killed...whats the endgame?  HE DOESN'T EVEN STATE WHAT WINNING IS!!!

I am so mad at this man right now.  Based on goals set by the original plan we are done.

Oust Saddam Hussien....check
Get rid of WMD's....check (since they didn't exist)
Establish new Govt....check

The new plan must be:

Rape Iraq of it's natural resources
Get Halliburton and friends on all no-bid contracts
Kill 1000's of soldiers used as human shields for those contracts (a.k.a. American interests overseas)

It'll be nice when the country goes back to being run by the people and for the people...rather than it being the inane kleptocracy it has become

I would have thought that Mr. Scheunemann would have been fired already after his abysmal performance yesterday.  This is the same oxymoronic spokesman who talks of the failed current leadership but Sen. McCain has been proven to be nothing but a continuation.  Then if that wasn't funny enough then he tried to say Obama=Bush.  No one believes that including his candidate and the good voters of Appalacchia.

The GOP makes it far too easy for logical people to debunk them.  Apparently they hate anyone who has a plan.  They believe in "shoot first, ask questions later" and turning America into the country that is terrified of anything that goes bump in the night.  If Sen. Obama doesn't go in person to Baghdad to get the mystical secrets from Gen. Petraeus he will have no clue of what to do in Iraq.  There is no way possible that the "generals on the ground" could have ever briefed Congress and the President to the goings-on.  I assume that a McCain Presidency would entail him going to every country in the world on every week or in the worst case, writing messages with his quill-tipped pen and sending them off via carrier pigeon.  The GOP has absolutely nothing and are waiting for Sen. Obama's next foreign policy move to wait and co-opt it as their own.  Just wait.
If this statement doesn't get every decent American in this country to go to Senator Obama's website and donate $10, $20 or $30, nothing will.

John McCain is at fault for every disaster that has taken place in Iraq. It is his fault for not standing up to Bush & Cheney & Rumsfeld and DEMANDING that we go after Bin Laden in Afghanistan.

We did not have to start a WAR. We needed to go in and take out Bin Laden and his murdering thugs.

Despite the GOP and their spin, this war did not begin with the surge, which by the way has not been successful politically.

Please, donate to Senator Obama's campaign. These people are sick.

JOHN MCCAIN WAS WRONG IN HIS JUDGMENT. DEAD WRONG.

Why is it that the Republican Party are such war mongers? Common sense says you go after the terrorists who executed 9/11.

Stupid stupid people.
How about a little background on Scheunemann? Nobody's been more consistently wrong about Iraq.

This latest dizzying spin from the McCain Slime Machine ("Obama won't change, so he's really the one like Bush; except he HAS changed, so he's a panderer") would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.
The joke here is the comparison of Obama to Rumsfeld and the Bush administrations.  Not McCain...Obama.

Randy Scheunemann  "suggesting" that Obama wants to "lose" the war, even comparing him to Donald Rumsfeld is laughable. Obama was against the war from the start and wanted our troops deployed to Afghanistan in stead of Iraq.  McCain has longed believed that Iraq is the center of the terorist universe and was for the invading Iraq in 1998, 5 uyears before we actually did.  He supported Rumsfeld and t5he President's strategy.

This has to be the lamest poitical attack ever!
Define win for me?  I keep seeing this everywhere when the MSM quotes their teachers pet or his surrogates.

Does win mean we will stay their as occupiers as long as we want?  Does win mean we will bankrupt our nation?  Does win mean we will sacrifice how many men and women, and their families?

Win what????
You know, when your attacks prove uneffective, you have to keep `em coming, hoping something will stick.  I also notice other than Jon Kyl, there are no names with any weight in this fiesta.
That statement doesn't even make any sense.

I'd like to see John McCain explain how keeping our soldiers occupying a country that no longer wants us there is "winning a war".  Who are we winning the war against?  They haven't even given us a clearly defined opponent.

It's rather politically convenient that the McCain campaign doesn't have a specific opponent in this "war" for us to defeat.  It allows them to set whatever measures of success and failure that they wish indefinitely.  Great for a propaganda campaign, horrible for a National Security stance.
I used to think if we survived Jimmy Carter, we could survive Obama.  Maybe next cycle.

McShame is a COMPLETE DISASTER.

He would look so much better if he would just say nice things about Obama. This is where Hill messed up as well.
The more he cries the more he looks like a GOP nut job
GA Guy:

The "collection of McCain idiots" are all pretty much veterans of the current administration. Same lies, same liars.
This all ya got you neo-con wussies????

No amount of GOP attack dogs foaming at the mouth will change the fact that McBush is a senile, confused, incompetent, confused, mini-me-bush.

And it wont change the fact that Obama HAS BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG ON IRAQ AND NOW HE IS RIGHT ON AFGHANISTAN.

McBush can play follow the leader all day long.  And then Leiberman can show him the way off the stage.

I guess you can't blame then for being mad.  If I had to pretend that my candidate was competent and had a chance, I would probably be angry also.

Rest easy chumps.  The election will be over soon and McBush can head back to the retirement community, where he belongs.
If they think that McCain is such a good candidate for president they should talk to the vietnam vets who believe that McCain was a rat in vietnam and is now a rat for not standing up for vetrans benifits and for stoping any ability to still find lost comrads.
Ok. McCain's camp is beyond silly now.  McCain's focus should be the economy not Barack Obama's every move. There are signs of desperation kicking in.
Let me think......wasn't Rumsfeld part of the BUSH Administration? And he "refused" to acknowledge failure in Iraq? I thought the GOPs want us to think we are "winning" in Iraq? Geesh, throw your own guys under the bus......but it's not politics....right?
"The American people deserve a commander-in-chief who puts their country first ahead of party, politics and self-interest."

Agreed. So why, pray tell does John Sydney McCain III align himself with a commander-in-chief who not only sold out this country to the highest no-bid contractor but who defers to the "commander on the ground"? Isn't it the C-I-C who sets the mission and not the other way around? McCain continues to say he listens to the commanders on the ground but they are not the president. The war escalation (erroneously called a surge) did not result in the political reconciliation or the revenue sharing that would guarantee that Iraq has an economy. Since we have more troops in Iraq after the "surge" than we did before it, this was an escalation. The media needs to call it what it is. Publish the pre- and post- "surge" numbers and you will see it was merely an escalation of the war. Those troops could have been used to put the Taliban in the ground for good.
Excuse me , but please tell me why  Mc Flip-Flop and Smirk Liebeman went to Columbia? All the Republicans know is how to Rowe.  So they attack Obama if he goes to Iraq, when he wasn't going,  they attacked. What is Mc Gaffe doing about the economy?

Oh, I forgot , the flip flopping  now supports the Bush tax cuts.. Oh and doesn't he now support Obama'a plan for Afghanistan?
The democrats never wanted "them" to lose a war. They wanted Bush to lose a war. That's why the shift in their BS since they "think" they'll win it all. That's why the shift on FISA. Can't have pissed off telecoms refusing to work with you once you're in power.
