McCain camp seizes on Mullen's remarks

While the Obama campaign has seized on Nouri al-Maliki's interview with Der Spiegel as proof that the Iraqi prime minister agrees with Obama's plan to withdraw troops from Iraq, the McCain camp is highlighting Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen's remarks this morning Fox News Sunday.

Per the Washington Post, Mullen argued on the show that withdrawing all US troops from Iraq over the next two years could be "dangerous." "I think the consequences could be very dangerous," [Mullen said]. 'I'm convinced at this point in time that ... making reductions based on conditions on the ground are very important.'"

VIDEO: TODAY's Meredith Vieira talks to presidential hopeful John McCain about Barack Obama's trip to the Middle East, economic policy and the situation in Afghanistan.

The McCain campaign quickly fired off this statement: "Barack Obama has said repeatedly that, if elected president, he would summon the Joint Chiefs of Staff and give them a new mission: get all U.S. forces out of Iraq within 16 months, regardless of the conditions on the ground. Today, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen, the nation's highest ranking officer, made clear that he believes such an approach could be 'very dangerous.'"

Obama, however, has never said he would ignore the conditions on the ground or the advice of US commanders there. As he wrote in the New York Times on Monday, "As I’ve said many times, we must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. We can safely redeploy our combat brigades at a pace that would remove them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010... In carrying out this strategy, we would inevitably need to make tactical adjustments. As I have often said, I would consult with commanders on the ground and the Iraqi government to ensure that our troops were redeployed safely, and our interests protected. We would move them from secure areas first and volatile areas later. We would pursue a diplomatic offensive with every nation in the region on behalf of Iraq’s stability, and commit $2 billion to a new international effort to support Iraq’s refugees."

Maybe they should just pull the troops out if Obama gets elected.  That way we can blame the democrats fora ll the problems that would happen when the terrorists take over.

Liberalism is a disease.....
Mike Mullen is a registered stupid republican hack.  I don't care one wit what he says and especially on foxnews.  This is the same kind of war propoganda used to get us into war and it is the same kind of propoganda trying to keep us in war.

On the other hand, he just may have given Senator Obama another gift, because Bush was trying to kill the anit-war rhetoric and now Mullen has revived it!
        Stupid is as stupid does!
The Commander-In-Chief of this country is the President of the United States. We may have forgotten this fact because for the last 8 years Bush has delegated that job to various generals.

Admiral Mullen's job is to execute the orders of the Prsident.  His opinion as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is considered. The decision and the responsibility of the decison is that of the President.

This administration has blamed General after General for the failure in Iraq. Forget that the administration had no plan for what was to happen the second we captured Baghdad. There was to be no resistance, we would be treated as liberators. There was no exit strategy.  They blamed the Generals, not the Commander-In-Chief, the man responsible for the conduct of the war.

So Mullen can have his opinion.  The Iraq's have said repeatedly, clearly and concisely that they want us to leave.  They are a free and independent Republic. How can we not respect their wishes.
Mr. McGoo's campaign appears to be running in a circle.  Meet Senator John McGoo in person http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQWmM-OLkDM
Is there anything Obama is going to do that the McNuts campaign isn't going to jump on,  they should be jumping on their own screwed up campaign.  Quit using everything Obama talks about and act like you just thought of it you stupid old man!!!!

Who looks "presidential" now?

Who appears more capable of being Commander-in-Chief?

Who looks tired and confused?

Perhaps the glorious patriots of the mighty 24% will find some other reasons to vote for McCain.

One of them wrote me the other day:

"You have a war hero with a wife with big boobs who owns a beer company.  What more do you need to know?"

Indeed!
"he would summon the Joint Chiefs of Staff and give them a new mission: get all U.S. forces out of Iraq within 16 months, regardless of the conditions on the ground."

Can we stop dancing around the issue and finally call McCain's campaign flat-out liars?

BRAVO FIRST READ!

Thank you for debunking this instead of just posting the McCain campaign talking points!

As you pointed out, Senator Obama's plan calls for a residual force to remain in Iraq and will be modified as needed based on conditions on the ground.

More smoke and mirrors from spin central.

It is inexcusable how McLame continuously misrepresents the truth about what Obama has said.  He's clearly getting desperate--isn't it interesting how all he spouts is how WRONG Obama is without offering alternatives?
You almost have to feel sorry for him.
Guess what? Bush and Duel Personality McCain have no strategy to win in Iraq. If the surge is up we stay and when violence due to the surge is down we stay. That clearly is no strategy. The President doesn’t have a magic wand; but he can wave Good-Bye.
SPIEGEL stands by their translation. What’s lost in translation are Bush envoy mistranslations. If it wasn’t for the Iraq invasion Al-Qaeda and the Taliban would not be in Iraq. Maliki and other Iraqi people want all foreigners out! Believe it.

Indeed!
Just a few short week's ago, John McCain's campaign was Retooled(for the Umpteenth time)by bringing on Steve Schimdt(correct me if i'm wrong-Anyone).At that time, it was said that thier message had No continuity to it.That is an Understatement!! McCain's message is "I was a POW" & therefore he deserves to be POTUS.We have heard no other message from Mccains campaign other than,Whineing about Barack not having been to Afghanistan & once to Iraq to visit with our Troop's.

Well, he's there Now, & what do we hear coming from Mccain's campaign, More Whineing because the Press is following his every move & Mccain's "I was a POW" message is'nt getting heard.

By All accounts so far that i've seen, Barack,Chuck & Jack have been well received by our Troop's.

McCain had to backtrack, when he knew he had made an Unforgivable error friday, when he said that Barack would be landing in Iraq,"Sometime this Weekend" in Michigan.

America, this man John Mccain is Not trustworthy enough to hold the highest office in the World. He was a rat after being captured in Vietnam & he was a Rat on Friday. Plain & Simple!!!

Stop Whineing John Mccain, Rat's like You, don't Cry.
Has McCain's camp released a retraction to their blatant misstatement (re: lie), First Read? Of course, you could do your job as journalists and maybe write a story about how the McCain campaign just lied about it's opponent's position. I'm surprised the usual "Could you imagine what would happen if Obama's camp did this?" Isn't included above.
Your headline should have read:

"Once Again the McCain Camp Lies and Distorts Obama's Statements".

That would really be calling it like it is!
McCain's BS was finally called out by someone in the MSM; (First Read notwithstanding). This is from the New York Times today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/20/opinion/20rich.html?_r=1&emc=tnt&tntemail0=y&oref=login
Eventually, if McSame keeps talking, people will recognize what a complete and utter fraud this guy is. Carly Fiorino is no bargain either. Mitt Romney? Please.
What a collection of incompetents.

Well, well, well, I must say I am totally surprised that First Read actually added the truth behind McCain's stupid statment.  I've been very unhappy lately with them just jotting down what McCain says without telling Obama's positions or the truth.  I can actually say congratulations for getting the whole truth on this one First Read.  Let's just hope you can actually continue to do this.  I'm not sure, but we will see.
McCain is a Senile old man.

Some of you actually want this senior citizen to run our country ?????
I wouldn't want him to drive a car.

Really, anyone inside the current administration has no credibility. Period.
This is the mccain deal in a nutshell...find some dr strangelove character to scare the heck out of the easily conned and poorly educated...

The Iraqis want us to leave a lot sooner than the bush-mccain axis does...boohoo for them for daring to disagree with the migthy americans...we expect the iraqi leader to be assasinated by the cia any day now
McCain's lies are so obvious now there is no way to spin them. Even those who don't check out political news every day can see through them.

What's sad is that the lies and innuenndo are all they have left. I know I'm not the only one who sees this. All of you citizens who say you want the best for our country can't seriously consider McCain for President.
Generals should not be getting involved in U S Presidential elections. I'm old enough to remember [75 years old] Gen. McArthur and President Truman.  Truman was Commander in Chief as per the Constitution and he acted as Commander in Chief. Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen should remeber the Constitution and safeguard it, not toot his own horn!!
Let's be honest the only top military officials that have survived during the Bush Years are the ones who have kissed his a$$.

So does it surprise anyone that Admiral Mullen is sticking to the Bush/McCain talking points.

Right. And of course this headline would have read: "Obama Camp Seizes on Mullen's remarks" had his "remarks" been attuned to the mantra of "change."

No. Actually, had Mullen's remarks favored Obama's campaign, the headline would look much more differently, I'm sure. But who cares what that crap would look like? "Change" should not oppose a responsibility to except reality - I'm for McCain.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
=======================================================
How long before McCain attacks Obama for not visiting Czechoslovakia? His camp has nothing!
I applaud first read for at least calling this a bold faced lie (more or less), but how come all of the news networks tuck away the fact checks in their blogs, while the networks on air (i.e, people like Ms. Greenspan Andrea Mitchell) continue to advance the GOP talking points without question.
First Read, and Mark Murray,

Thank you for reiterating Senator Obama's well known stance on the redeployment of our troops in Iraq.

Once again, the McCain campaign is lying.

Admiral Mullen, Head of the Joint Chiefs, has held several news conferences lately, espousing the need for more troops in Afghanistan. Mullen said that  Bush, and McCain's insistence upon continuing the status quo, militarily in Iraq, is a hamstringing policy which has kept him from being effective in the fight against our attackers on 9/11. The struggle against our terrorist enemies is in the caves of  P'stan, and A'stan. (The fact that bin Laden has yet to be held accountable is unconscionable.

Given Obama's consistent, and clear as crystal position stating what he intends, after consulting with US Military Leaders as to ground conditions in Iraq, with troop safety his primary concern, I find Mullen's argued concerns disingenuous, or at least a back pedal.

Perhaps the media has tweaked his comments, and taken them out of context.

I would also like to point out that in the interview with ADM Mullen and the one with Gen P yesterday, they both state that with the mission they have been given they are making these statements. I find it interesting that they BOTH use this phrasing.

Obama has said that he would give the military a NEW mission and that would be responsible withdrawal from Iraq. I wonder what changes in their strategy they would implement with THAT mission.

Obama 08!
Maybe I’m naïve and although I’m  totally delighted that Maliki agrees with Senator Obama’s time line and wants our troops out in the “short term” -- his statement  “We would like to see the establishment of a long term strategic treaty with the United Sates, which would govern the basic aspects of our economic and cultural relations.” Sounds to me like Bush and Cheney’s big oil companies will get what they want, which is why we went there in the first place. This, of course will require enough troops in the “long term” to protect the embassy and big oil’s interest. Or maybe Cheney’s Black Water boys will protect all that for them?! Either way, we’re not done with Iraq yet folks. The Administration knows there is going to have to be a major draw down of troops there to send to Afghanistan. But they have to keep the argument going for McCain’s sake so they send out Mike Mullen.
I have followed this campaign intensely.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard reporters and candidates extract an untrue purpose from Obama's words.  Thank you First Read, for not going there, this time.  You reported both the lie and the truth.  If this were to continue, voters would actually learn the differences between their candidates.  Because the one fault I have with the Obama campaign is that he gives the American people too much credit.  We do not read and listen as well as we should.  So, you guys have got to do a more honest, thorough job of presenting their positions and to do so without so much spin and analysis.  I realize the importance of conflict in a drama, but there is no need for you guys to create the conflict.  Arthor intrusion diminishes character development and that ruins the story.  So report and let the characters do their own talking and thinking.  That's what will fully engage us as viewers.
From one who spent 22 years in the navy and retired as an officer, I can tell you Admiral Mullin is, without question, doing and saying exactly as he is being instructed to do from the Chain of Command.

This is the way of the military and if Mullin wants to keep his job, he will tow the line.

No speculation, just plain fact.
Mullen has been advocating reducing the number of troops in Iraq and shifting them to Afghanistan. That's Obama's position and the opposite of what McCain has been saying.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-fg-base17-2008jul17,0,4808448.story
Just think McCain is the one who for years called for increased US troops in Ieaq in order to bring stability to the country and allow the US to withdraw from Iraq in victory.

Now that McCain has been that he knows what he's talking about, Obana supporters are trying to say Obama is right and has the right plan.

Seeing that Obama and his supporters like to misrepresent the facts, how can you actually believe anything they post.

Obama July 15, 2008 Iraq speech., Keeps repeating 18 months since the surge began.

Let's see, Bush announced the surge in January, troops were deployed in Iraq by the end of June.  July 2008 less Jend of June 2007 does not equal 18 months.

If Obama had an ounce of honesty in him he would have said "18 months since the surge was announced", instead of intetionally misleading people.

Matter of fact Obama still tries to claim the surge hasn't worked.

john! john! john! john! this is starting to get a little over the top now.are you that desperate?don't try to tell lies in those days where information is at the finger tips of everyone. it is true that you're not computer literate but a'm sure you can let your people look up stuff before you even let it out you not being able to handle a computer does not mean that americans on the whole can't
First of all, what's Mullen supposed to say.   He is a paid stooge, political appointee and  has to tow the company line.   His boss is the POTUS.    When Obama becomes POTUS, he will give Mullen a new mission to complete or Mullen will be fired.   That is how the game is played.   That being said, Mullen really should keep his opinions out of the news.   Propaganda is better served up by those civilians with higher pay grades than his.
Corey, KS (Sent Sunday, July 20, 2008 2:48 PM
Al-Maliki has stated for months, his preference to US troops staying in Iraq to help provide security and train Iraqi forces.

The New York Times recently did a piece quoting an Iraqi General who opposed Senator Obama's withdrawal plan.

General after General from the US & Iraq have stated their prefrence of a withdrawal based on the conditions on the ground rather than withdrawing by a certain date.

The only people spinning this story is the Obama supporters who are desperately looking for anything to support his terrible plan.

=========================================================
Soory Corey in KS

You too got lost in translation today. A few weeks back the Bush regime said the same thing about mis-translations.  Do you remember that Maliki’s Deputy came and repeated it was no Mis- translation? Malki says he wants us out. Believe it.

This is not spinning the story the only people spinning this story is Bush and Duel Personality McCain and their supporters; because they have no strategy to win in Iraq. They will never have a strategy to win in Iraq, as long as there’s the Black gold and the other spoils of war in 100 years.

Obama has forsaken his anti-war promises.  I thought he was different and stood for change, but now he's just putting our troops into a different killing field. I supported him when he wanted to bring them home.  Now who am I supposed to vote for when he's trying to out-war McCain?

Now, this comment below is interesting.  How many soldiers make up a residual force?  Can you give me a number?  That could be 1 to 200,000.  This is called speaking without saying anything... Politician do this well and Senator Obama has become quite good at it.  Look Obamicans, I did not even stoop to name calling.  You poor kool-aid drinkers.
---------------------------------------------------
As you pointed out, Senator Obama's plan calls for a residual force to remain in Iraq and will be modified as needed based on conditions on the ground.

More smoke and mirrors from spin central.
Does anyone else find it strange that after repeated calls this week from the Iraqi governement to leave their country as soon as possible and after today's interview with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's with the German magazine Der Spiegel virtually endorsing Obama's troop draw down plan, that the Commander-In-Chief, Admiral Mullen thinks a timed withdrawal is dangerous.

Pretty convenient for McCain and the administration don't you think?

It is sad to see the General Staff of this country used for poitcal gain. The military is supposed to be impartial and mission oriented and not the puppets of a presidential candidadate or party.

We simply cannot sink any lower.
MacArthur did not dictate policy in Korea.

Admiral Mullen will not dictate policy in Iraq...at least not to Obama.
Pardon me, but I don't believe FDR micro-managed his Generals in Europe or Admirals in the Pacific as much as Bu$h has done so in Afgan and Iraq.

Also, being a victim of polio, I don't think FDR ever served a day in the military either.

And if I'm not mistaken, under his leadership(not micro-management), the Generals and Admirals were given the freedom to conduct their campaigns against the enemy as they saw fit with the resources available and the US was victorious in wars on both fronts.

So a military background/experience is not a requirement for the position of President or commander-in-chief.

Second, the military shouldn't be in the position of creating or interpreting the news ... that's why we have a media. They should only respond to questions asked of them with specific facts concerning the subject at hand. In other words, they should not generate the news talking points. To do otherwise could be viewed as playing politics in areas where they should be apolitical. In short, the military has no business engaging in politics, especially global...it's not their area of expertise. They should only advise the US government of their concerns or interpretation of events, not the media.

Besides, in December the UN mandate for troops being in Iraq expires. And if Iraq believes they are capable of standing on their own two feet and the UN is in agreement, we have no choice but to leave if asked. That's regardless what we think is best for Iraq.

If our friends abroad think highly of Sen.Obama, that mean that we are on the right path.. And too them fools who say the hell with what other say, are living in la la land.. The way things are now, that would put us an a box and without other on our side will leave us on High Alert at all time. We can't live in fear.......

Big Al,

Great post. You tell 'em!
McCain is a lost cause.  the point is that the iraqis want us out and they like obama's way of getting us out of iraq, we need to focus on afghanistan.  Even the bush administration is moving in obamas direction so mccain is left out there on his own with this one

McCain continuously clearly misrepresents Obama's position to his own detriment.

It seems odd that Mullen would happen to make that statement at this exact time. Co-inky-dink? I think not.
In damage control, the McCAin and Biush camps now claim Maliki's statements were not weell transmitted. They forgot there were footprints to his current statements from the past two weeks:

Starting from Maliki seekingn a timetable when the Bush admin had said they did not want one forcing them to now want a 'time horizon' (how unstupid and uneducated they think we are - no eonoder they keep dumbing down our education system making it easier fo the rich and elite to rule us by proxy through republicans).

The next natural step for Maliki is to look at Obama's timetable (being the only clearly proferred one) and render his judgement on it - on questions from Germany - which he did. He only ocnfirmed what we already knew here that Obama is a very strategic candidate.
Of course, as usual, the generals have been "briefed" on what to say.
It ia unfortunate that the GOP campaing blindly ignores what senator Obama clearly states about troops withdrawing ( see  the New-York Times)
I wish the old guy would quit his whining and get to reading that book on economics, like he said he was going to,  just in case we wind up with the misfortune to have him be our President.
Now that he is starting to learn to 'do a google' by himself, maybe  he can spend his time with some sort of economic tuturial, instead of sending out these stupid sounding press releases that make him sound even more confused.
Nice, so now Maliki is interfering with our elections.  Thought there was a law against that.
We have suffered threw 8 years with a rookie in the White House on foreign affairs.  Do we want another rookie?  Don't think so.  Can't imagine what a mess this country will be in if another rookie is elected.
desperation thy name is McANCIENT
The only choice the Bush-McCain camp have on Iraq now is to distort Obama's troop withdrawal plan as being totally disconnected with events on the ground when he has said he would 'refine' the tactics of the how based on general's advice (spurring the ill assumption of flip-flop - now he is being accused of opposite of flip-flop or being inflexible to the geenral's advice).

As he lectures them on the difference between strategy and tactics - the CIF sets strategy having a broader picture that includes overall country's interest and all factors including economy; and the general advices on tactics being the expert on the matter of how; not the horse and pony show we've had the past 8 years.
