The unmarried women's vote

Posted: Monday, July 21, 2008 4:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
Much has been made about how an increase in turnout among African Americans or young voters could end up benefiting Obama in the fall. But a new poll conducted by the Democratic firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, and commissioned for Women's Voices, Women Vote Action Fund, shows that it's also important not to overlook the role that unmarried women might play in the general election.

In the poll -- which was conducted among 1,004 registered unmarried women from June 19-24 in key battleground states -- Obama holds a 32-point lead over McCain (61%-29%) among this demographic. By comparison, another recent Greenberg/Democracy Corps survey has him leading McCain among married by just one point (49%-48%).

VIDEO: NBC's Kelly O'Donnell is on the campaign trail with John McCain, as the Republican presidential candidate focuses on women issues and the economy.

This marital gap isn't new. In 2004, according to exit polls, unmarried women voted for John Kerry by a 62%-37% margin, and they backed Democratic candidates in the 2006 midterms, 65%-32%. On the other hand, Kerry lost married women by 11 points to Bush in 2004, and the married vote was essentially split between Democrats and Republicans in the midterms.

Perhaps most interesting are the number of unmarried women in this country. Per Census data, there are 53 million unmarried women in this country -- which is almost equal to the number of married women, both representing 26% of the voting-age population. In fact, Page Gardner, president of Women's Voices, Women Vote Action Fund, says that unmarried women represent the nation's fastest-growing demographic. "It is huge and it's growing," she told First Read. "This is an extremely important demographic."

One of the poll's conclusions is that increasing the size of the unmarried women's vote -- from 22% of all voters in 2004 to 24% in 2008 -- could result in at least a two-point increase in Obama's total, "a huge gain in presidential politics."

But turning out unmarried women to vote hasn't always been easy. In 2004, according to the polling analysis, 41% of unmarried women DIDN'T vote in 2004, versus 29% of married women who didn't.

Why is this news?
While it is interesting that unmarried women tend to be more liberal than married women, I would wager that most of the women on this board are married! No?  Besides, weren't the "soccer moms" married women voting for Bill Clinton?

Also - it serves no purpose to keep pigeonholing people like this.

"I'm sure the homeless will be out tearing up the streets of Denver like the far left morons will be.  Maybe if the homeless went out and got jobs, maybe they would not get into so much trouble, but it is hard to tell a homeless person to work when they have Obama promising to give them free money.
jerry/corpus christi texas (Sent Monday, July 21, 2008 9:28 AM)"

Hey, Jer - the homeless not "getting a job" has nothing to do with Obama.  Obviously you have never worked with homeless folks.

(1) If you are homeless, you have no permanent address, and many employers won't consider you for a job if you don't have a permanent address and a phone.
(2) Many homeless are/were part of the "unskilled" workforce, and those type of jobs are disappearing.  Just what jobs are they qualified for?  If you can't afford an apartment, you surely can't afford college or trade school.
(3) Many homeless don't have cars and have to ride their bikes (if they are lucky enough to have them) or walk to their jobs.  That limits where they can work.  In my town, the mission for the homeless is far away from the factories, and we don't have a very good bus system, so you can't rely on it to take you where you need to go.
(4) Many homeless are "unfit" to work - mental health issues, medical issues, etc. - or don't have anyone to watch their children while they go to work.  What do you expect those people to do?

Maybe you should TRY to think about the less fortunate than you before you start spouting off at people you know nothing about.

Delores, please explain...what "new world order" do you think Obama will want to create?  So, I take it you object to getting our troops out of Iraq and back to Afghanistan, and you would prefer to live in a GOP-ruled "us first, companies second, voters last" country?  Apparently you like the last 8 years...or is it just because your precious Hillary isn't leading the charge?
As a result, Bush will issue an executive order mandating that all single women of voting age must be married by election day...thinking that will help the poll numbers for his buddy McCain.
I can't imagaine any woman voting for McSame.

Pat!! Marry soon! You can tip the balance!!
How about red headed, one armed, hispanic, woman under 30 with college degrees? Have they polled them yet? Lord help us; I can't wait for November!

Funny!
I'd like to tap into that UNMARRIED WOMEN vote for other reasons!

Hehehehehehe!

I sure wouldn't put it past him; I still question whether we will have an election. Bush is a monster; Cheney is worse; I fear the "election" may never come.........
I can't believe that more unmarried women are not voting for John McCain!

I mean he's against equal pay for women, he's against the insurance companies paying for birth control and he's against reproductive choice.

It's just mind boggling, dontcha think?
Just goes to show that something strange happens to women after they marry. Must have something to do with the idiots they are married too. Married women ... think free and fun and independence and minus that spousal baggage you are married too and you will see the light to support Obama.
Yep! I'm unmarried and I am voting for Obama. So what? Does this mean that if I get married before November I might change my mind or I may have to vote Reublican because my husband told me to.

Why is anyone breaking votes down into these stupid categories. Who really cares. Is this where my tax money is going? To pay for people to come up with numbers like these that mean diddlysh*t.

-----------------

That's exactly what is happening. Drudge just posted that the New York Times rejected McCains editoral response to Obama's Iraq editioral from last week. What is it now, the NYTs, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, LATimes, ChiTrib, Time, Newsweak, on and on it goes, all in Obama's backpocket.

Many think Obama is a 'rock star'. Many others think he is a rock head.
As I see it, it's all good news for Obama.  Youth, African Americans, Married, Unmarried, are all more engaged in this election than I can ever remember.  We will be coming out in droves to vote for Barack Obama. As far as pigeon holing people, I'm a "Independent" white, 49 year old, feminist, married woman for Obama, and have been for him since before Iowa. LOL.  I suspect many Republicans will be voting for Barack Obama in November also.

Obama/Biden, 08
The reason this is news is because Obama is counting on the young people coming through for him.  However, as they find out their future is no less secured under Barack Obama, people will look to a more experienced leader to lead them.  Obama has shown nothing to anybody about why he should be President.  You can't get anyone to say why they like Obama, other then the word "change".  But under an Obama administration, it will be the same old thing.  The war in Iraq and Afghanistan will continue, gas will be over $4.00 a gallon, food prices will climb and Liberals will make things as miserable as they can for ordinary hard working americans.

Liberalism is a disease....
Hey Mark - this year will be nothing like 2004.  You guys will see that the turn out of 2008 - will bring pundits to their knees...

If i was a betting man; i would put Barack Obama up in double digits of every aspect and corner of the map, catogory, gender, race, north, south, east, west - this election as much as you media people try to keep it close....will be an absolute landslide victory for Barack Obama and you will see the trend ..right from the beginning of the counting of the votes doing election night.

No way in hell - John McCain wins this - no amount of money - no amount of slandering - no amount of media spinning - nothing.

The overwhelming majority of Americans - want Barack Obama as President ...period.

You guys will - try to bring doubt - and stir emotions - because you know this too.

This year could mean record profits - if you guys spin the news and would somehow suggest closeness.

But do what you feel.....we voters - know who will be President and it sure aint John McCain...but the one the only Barack Obama
Okay, y'know, I understand how numbers can be helpful in analysis, but this is starting to get ridiculous. The further we break people up into groups and sub-groups and sub-sub-groups, the further we get away from actually finding something real.

It's funny... I was watching a rerun of "Gilmore Girls" the other day, and one of the characters, running for Student Council President, expressed her joy that she and her running mate had won "the band vote." I wonder, will current/former marching band members go for Obama or McCain? And what does that mean?
Married women do not have the safety net of a spouse's income.  They however, are independent, free-thinking, contributors to society.  Unless the ecomony is strong and our security is tight unmarried women, like all Americans cannot be successful.  Presumptive Nominee Barack Obama is the best candidate, with his understanding of the failing economy and plan to revitalize it and his diplomatic relations with our allies and other countries, is the candidate to lead.
We're voting for Barack Obama cause he's so dreamy!!!
As an unmarried woman (divorced) and a member of
this article's demographic, I believe we will comme out as we already have, to continue to support Senator Obama in significant numbers. WE give our support financially, as we believe he is an investment in our future and the future of our children, hence the future of our country. We will be there for him and for all of us in November, IN LARGE
LARGE NUMBERS!
Once these ladies see what they can expect from a John McCain presidency, those numbers will shift. Come join me at a great website for Mr. McCain:

http://www.womenforjohnmccain.com/
Pat Huntington NY - that was pretty hilarious. It feels so dictatorial around here that I wouldn't be surprised. Or the repubs will simply cheat - again.
MI Chick,

Go play on a GOP website, you don't belong here.  How have the republicans helped this country, people are suffering and spouting off GOP party line crap.

WOMEN REFUSED TO VOTE TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY, THE LILLY LEADBETTER CASE.........LOOK IT UP

IF WOMEN WANT TO KEEP MAKING AS MUCH AS 40% LESS THAN MEN FOR 20+ YEARS THEN JOHN MC CAIN AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE FOR YOU

John refused to SUPPORT THE EQUAL PAY LAW, GIVING WOMEN EQUAL WAGES/SALARIES THE SAME AS MEN.

JOHN MCCAIN REFUSED TO RETURN TO THE SENATE TO VOTE HOWEVER, SAID PUBLICLY THAT GIVING WOMEN EQUAL PAY WOULD CAUSE THEM TO FILE LAWSUITS, THUS PROTECTING EMPLOYERS AND YET AGAIN BIG BUSINESS.

ANY WOMAN WHO VOTES FOR SEN MC CAIN I REALLY FEEL FOR YOU BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE NOT KEPT UP WITH THE NEWS, MEDIA AND SEN. MC CAIN'S OWN PUBLIC STATEMENT AND REFUSAL TO VOTE TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY IT'S OUTRAGEOUS.

REPUBLICAN WOMEN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT MC CAIN AND THE PARTY

WHAT SPARKED THE BILL IN CONGRESS WAS A WOMAN WHO AFTER 20 YEARS FOUND OUT THAT SHE WAS PAID 40% LESS THAN THE MEN ON THE JOB.  THE US SUPREME COURT UPHELD THE EMPLOYER.  AS A RESULT THE DEMS INTRODUCED A BILL AND PUT IT BEFORE THE CONGRESS FOR A VOTE.

NOT ONLY SEN. MC CAIN REFUSED TO VOTE FOR THE EQUAL PAY LAW TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL WAGES THE SAME AS MEN, FAILED TO SHOW UP FOR THE VOTE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY VOTED OVWE WHELMINGLY  56-42 TO STOP AND DEFEAT THE BILL

NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.  iF THE BILL HAD BEEN APPROVED EMPLOYERS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PAY WOMEN EQUAL PAY THEREFORE, NO LAWSUITS WOULD BE FILED.  BUT APPARENTLY SEN. MCCAIN AND THE REPUBLICANS SIMPLY USED THIER EXCUSE TO DEFEAT THE BILL.

Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a 56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to full debate and a vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had delayed the vote to give McCain's Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans.
"I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what's being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. "This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."

SEN. MCCAIN ISN'T IT GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE EQUAL PAY FOR EVERYONE?  APPARENTLY SEN MCCAIN AND THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT AGREE
FR - Why do you guys let idoits like Jerry/coupus christi, TX - post such mean and cruel messages on your post.

This is absolutely irresponsible of you guys.  I know I have tried to counter his non-sense and you guys never allow my postings when it comes countering Jerry's.

This is absolutely outrages to allow this person (if he is really someone - or just your way of getting people upset) but in any regards - I really think that - when you allow this garbage on your blogs ...you have to be garbage to do so.

Think about it
Hi Mark, you may want to talk to stats expert before a post like this.  The difference in turnout is only interesting if you control for other correlated variables.  For example, unmarried voters are more likely to be younger and younger voters are less likely to turnout or unmarried voters are more likely to be less educated and less educated voters are less likely to turnout.  So, it is possible that the difference has nothing to do with marriage status and everything to do with correlated factors.
This is very interesting.  Thanks for all the number crunching and analysis.  Great job.
Why does the MSM continue to slice and dice the AMerican people into five millions different categories?

The bottom line, no matter HOW you slice and dice, is that McBush and the rest of the GOP's on down the line are going to lose in a MAJOR way come November.  Of course the MSM want to make it seem like it's a close race, otherwise their shows would be BORING but the facts are that Obama is going to win in a LANDSLIDE all across the board, all across the Nation.

Sure McBush will hold on to those 18% that think G-Dub is doing a great job, and the super rich people that don;t know, or care how much gas is, as they "have people" to fill up their cars. And he will get the one issue voters that can;t get past the pro- choice thing.  And those racists backwoods people that STILL think that Obama is a muslim, or won't vote for him just because of the color of his skin.

But look at the state by state polls.  You know, the ones that the MSM never want to talk about.  The state by state polls are the only ones that matter, as the electoral college is awarded by states.

Look at those polls and see who is up and who is down, and where Obama is winning.

And don;t forget about the debates.  Notice the MSM hasn't mentioned the debates yet?  McBush won't have Lieberman and the rest of the crew whispering in his ear at the debates.  All of his incompetence will come full circle when he standing next to Obama in front of the camera for all the world to see.

Slice it, dice it, and pop it in the oven.  Don't matter.  It's already done and McBush's goose has been cooked.
I have posted comments on many different occas-
ions and have not yet seen them here.  Please
post my comments!
With the primaries over, I've found time to do a lot of poling lately too. What? Not poling? Oh, polling! Nevermind.

Isn't that what liberalism has tried to do the last 60 or so years?  Make it where people can get to work without breaking their backs to do it?  Nancy Pelosi could care less if a single woman with three kids had to choose between gasoline for her car or food for her family.  She has made that plain as day!  Liberals are just people looking for an easy buck.  I cannot count the number of times I have offered homeless people a job for money and how they sneer at me and want the money for not doing an honest day's pay.

Homeless people and liberals are one in the same thing.  They want the money, but don't want to work for it.

That's why Liberalism is a disease........

With people like Pelosi and Dingy Harry REid in Congress, it is no wonder why the rest of the world is laughing at us.
McCain will forbid unmarried women from having abortions

McCain OPPOSED Roe vs Wade

It will just take one Supreme Court nomination to tip the balance to a rejection of Roe vs Wade

...on the other hand, McCain promises free wire coat hangers for all 'breeding age' women

John McCain, the type of guy your mother warned you about

John McCain supports Calif's anti-marriage initiative

Obama OPPOSES the anti-gay, anti-marriage initiative

According to the Field poll, Californians will vote NO on marriage inequality for GLBT citizens
Times have changed
And for the BETTER

...and it cures STUPIDITY !!
McSame is making the same mistakes Hillary did: Always talking down Obama, but never giving a reason to vote for himself instead of just against someone else.
very sad just sad and of course MCCAIN will blame SEN OBAMA AND MICHELLE  he is nuts .He is blaming him for the gas prices before that he said that OBAMA was on the same page AS president BUSH now was A LAUGH MY friends AND I  drank wine and crack up.who is making up this stuff . We don't believe it is MCCAIN he don't THINK that fast
You guys have been sleeping!!!!!

Of course, working, single women are going to factor huge in this election. I suggest we start sending our empty birth control pill packets to the McBush Campaign headquarters so he can be reminded.

By the way, those of us in Michigan suggest he stop visiting factories when he comes here.  That crowd behind him looked pretty darned miffed that he was here supporting NAFTA (what a nut)!
The sub-set of unmarried women is perhaps the most demographically diverse group in our country.  It crosses every demographic group in the country, rich, poor; younger, older; white, black, latino, Asian; gay, straigt, etc., etc., etc.

Women's Voices, Women Vote Action Fund is doing a great job of locating these women and getting them registered to vote.  However, there seems to be some sub-sets of these voters they are missing in crucial swing states, predominately in rural areas.

Take a look at Virginia for instance, a crucial swing state in this election which has not awarded its electoral votes to a Democrat for President since 1964.

The 5th Congressional District, as well as the fourth, take in the southern and central part of the state due west and south of Richmond.  These districts are predominatley rural, usually vote Republican and have tons of unregistered AA's.  Obama swept these areas in the primary due to an oupouring of AA's in the primary.  However, registration statistics suggest that those counties in the rural 4th and 5th CD's are not seeing the big increase in voter registration that the Obama campaign was hoping for.

Counties such as Pittsylvania County, in the 5th CD which hugs the North Carolina border, has had a registration increse since the 1st of the year of 2.8%.  The county, as of July 16, 2008 has a total registration of 39,139; 1,039 have registered since January 1, 2008.

Buckingham Coun ty, also in the 5th CD, has a toal of 9,241 registered voters, 245 of whom have registered to vote since Janaury 1, 2008, which equates to a 2.6% increase.

If Obama is to carry Virginia this fall, his campaign must get into these rural counties and increase these rates.  If they are unable to do it, I hope Page Gardner at Women's Voices, Women Vote is reading this.
THE UNMARRIED WOMEN'S VOTE

***********************************************

Mark,

You scared me to death with this title!

I thought sure your article would be full of huge numbers of coast to coast chapters of unmarried, and highly motivated female PUMA rage! Whew!

So women overall favor Obama. Wonderful!

Camie, (I think), shared a link that exposed facts that PUMA was started by longtime Republican operatives working as spoilers against dem unity.

Someone posted another link to one of their rallies. They are the most unenthusiastice bunch of protesters imaginable. Their demeanor reminded me of ladies meeting under a landmark clock on a corner somewhere before all going out to lunch together.
Unmarried woman, especially those who may be in child-bearing years, please understand the voting record of Senator McCain.
1) voted against 2005 budget amendment, sponsored by Senator Clinton, that would help reduce teen pregnancy by way of education and birth control

2) Voted to abolish Title X, which funds gynecological care, especially for poor women, including birth control and cancer screenings

3) Voted against requiring insurance companies to cover prescription birth control even though they do cover erectile dysfuntion meds like Viagra (see video)
http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/mccains-awkward-pause-when-asked-about-viagra/

4) Voted to suspend Family Medical Leave Act in 1993

5) Voted against reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

6) Voted against the Ledbetter Act, which would have overturned the Supreme Court's restrictions on a woman's right to sue for paycheck discrimination.

7) Divorced his wife for a younger woman (see Cindy McCain at your convenience)

8) Allowed someone to call Senator Clinton a B**** and just laughed at the question.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLQGWpRVA7o&feature=related

So, if you want that type of leadership in your next President, then Senator McCain is your man.

I happen to believe that
*if you don't want to get pregnant, you shouldn't have to go to extremes to get birth control, especially since men get their ED meds covered.  After all, the pill is prescribed many times to help fight against endemtriosis, severe cramps, reducing ovarian cancer risks, and even shrinking fibroids.
*since women more often than men take care of ailing parents or sick children, they're the ones adversely affected if they have no safety net under th FMLA umbrella
*since women more often than men have custody of their children, they should not be hurt by not having any state help with needed funds for those children thru SCHIP, especially when the dead-beat dads don't pay child support
*women should get paid the same as men if they're doing the same job.
*well, people get divorced for a lot of reasons so we shouldn't beat McCain up on this one. I did read, though, that he was skirt-chasing not long after he returned from Vietnam and basically didn't think his wife was attractive anymore. His ex-wife suggested he just wanted to be 25 again, not 40.
*we see too much misogyny on videos, we don't need politicians allowing it from anyone, even if it cam from a woman.

Ladies, good luck.  You'll definitely need it if McCain gets the job, because he's already told us he's appointing judges like Alito, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas. Forget Roe v. Wade for this argument, just look up their other decisions.
yes, we unmarried women are very concerned about women's issues too.  We don't have a second income to help with things.

You bet I'll vote for Obama.

Baby Sitters for Obama!
John McCain - why do you feel Barack Obama should agree with anything you say.

You twist everything to fit your agenda and your motive; you are delusional if you somehow feel that Barack Obama - owes you something or should be working for your campaign.

So, what if you happen to be correct on the surge...was it your idea or the Generals.

You are not the commander in chief....so you couldn't have given the order to do a surge.

You cherry pick a point of topic that you could be remotely correct about and then expect U.S. to stay focused on an opinion that you had and somehow that opinion should convince the American people that you are best qualified.

What about the ultimate opinion - the opinion that Barack Obama gave before this war even started...the one that suggested we should not go to war with Iraq and focus on Afghanistan.

What about the current opinions that you have disagreed with that were suggested by Barack Obama - that now - even the George Bush administration is starting to listen too and take action upon.

You are weak John McCain - we don't want another weak President.

All you can do is take some weak "surge" comment and pounce it all day and think that's going to make you a star.

You will never be the star that Barack Obama is - the whole world - sees you as another George Bush and they have had enough; just as we..

You make either pointless statements or out right lies - and you continue to think the American people are too stupid to see through your BS.

Well, you are wrong and you will reap what you sew come election time - when you lose by gigantic proportions.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Gee, Obama's votes should increase dramatically when the Germans, Jordanians, Afghanis, Israelis, Iraqis, those in countries on his CAMPAIGN PHOTO OP overseas all submit their votes. First time in history that foreigners will vote in our elections.  Guess that's why he jumped over there to campaign promising soldiers in Kuwait more support and benefits "if elected", promising the Afghani govt more support "if elected".  As a taxpayer, I'm OUTRAGED that my tax dollars are paying for an Obama CAMPAIGN PHOTO OP. I've written my senators and others today asking that action be taken to bill Obama for the stops in Afghanistan and Iraq. SUPPOSEDLY,  his campaign was paying for the other parts of the trip.
Married women, unmarried women, and those in between are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that John McCain has consistently voted against issues that are important to many of us.  I fully expect his support among women to steadily decrease as we get closer to November.
It's going to be a landslide for Obama in November, mark my words folks.
Interesting.  As an unmarried woman who's also a homeowner with two degrees, I fit in with the demographic they're saying supports Obama.  Good thing I also actually think he's the best candidate!

GOBAMA!
on another note... lets see what McCain has to say about SC Senator Kevin Bryant's ignorant web posting about Obama.

reading his quote, he sounds like someone that just came out of the woods with a slingshot.
