Veepstakes PM: McCain pick soon?

Posted: Monday, July 21, 2008 6:17 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: ,

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
THE SHORT LIST:
Bob Novak reports, citing sources close to the McCain camp, that the Arizona senator may pick his running mate this week while Obama is overseas.

ON THE RECORD:
Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) was asked by Andrea Mitchell if he’s envious of the time Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) is spending with Obama abroad. “Jack’s a good friend,” he replied. “I’m glad he’s there.” More on VP speculation: “I was doing my best to avoid it.” And he politely demurred.

Tom Ridge tells PolitickerPA.com that McCain has a “steep climb” in the Keystone State. Asked about his VP status, Ridge says: "John and I have had no conversations about it. When John lets me know, I'll have more to say. If John lets me know."

During a South Florida stop, Joe Lieberman again signaled he’d be an unlikely pick for veep. “I had the opportunity to run in 2000,” he said.

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO:
Mitt Romney was on Bill Bennnett’s morning show. Bennett did not ask Romney about VP speculation, but began the interview by saying he’d make a great VP pick. Romney said that he’s currently in Canada with his family.

Will he still go if he’s the VP-elect? Romney is on the list for the National Review cruise, which starts November 8.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) sent a letter to Ford Motor Company seeking to keep a local plant operational. The governor also “proposes to partner with Ford in developing opportunities related to renewable and hybrid technologies, including the creation of a nation-leading Center of Excellence in Renewable Fuels or in more traditional ways.”

Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA) spoke at the dedication of a monument to the desegregation of Virginia schools.

Hillary Clinton, along with colleagues from New York and New Jersey, are urging the Bush Administration to extend the contract of John Howard, a 9/11 health expert.

After Clinton addressed delegates of the National Association of Letter Carriers in Boston, the group threw its support behind Obama. "The best way to stand up for everyone who feels invisible is to make sure we have a Democratic president taking the oath of office on January 20, 2009," Clinton said.

Michael Bloomberg said McCain has a better record on free trade.

Mike Huckabee will be in Lancaster, PA, on Oct. 11.

Gov. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) is an unlikely VP pick, but he’s going to try and smooth the path for Obama during his trip to Israel.

BUZZ METER:
Nancy Pelosi addressed talk about how HRC backers might react to Obama’s VP pick, saying: "I don't think we should be making an issue after the primary is over about who should be vice president... The only one thing important right now is party unity. None of us can afford the luxury of 'my candidate doesn't win the nomination' or 'my candidate wasn't chosen as vice president, I'm taking my marbles and going home.'”

Most of the Hillraisers have been slow to give to Obama and the DNC.

Minnesota Monthly profiles Pawlenty, saying he is the “most talented Minnesota politician of his generation.” And Pawlenty discourages VP talk, but does talk about a Cabinet post. “I think there’s a mistaken impression that going from governor to a cabinet post is somehow a promotion.” The crux of the piece is that, “Pawlenty’s friends, allies, adversaries, and staff often don’t seem to be describing the same person.” In other words, as the headline reads, a “cipher.”

ELECTORAL MATH:
Gov. Bill Richardson says Obama will narrowly win New Mexico this fall. “"I'm realistic. New Mexico is one of the battleground states," he said.

CHATTERING CLASS:
Jonah Goldberg outlines the plusses, minuses and risks with any of McCain’s picks.

Despite a poll showing electoral strength, Frank James doubts we’d see a Obama-Powell ticket.

The Christian Science Monitor takes a look at how this vice presidential process is playing out in the Internet age. “The beauty of all the talk is there no way to disprove any of the theories, at least until the actual selections are announced. The candidates themselves may not know which way they're leaning, at this point. Those with a window into their thinking aren't talking, and those who talk probably don't have a clue.”

Geez, even a rich guy like ROMNEY needs Canadian medications!-)
NANCY PELOSI, ITS HILLARY OR NOTHING. AND IF SHES NOT VP, I WILL TAKE MY MARBLES HOME. thank you very much
Mr. Bloomberg might be the only person who understands the economy.
Ms. Pelosi would do herself and this country a huge favor by talking less about what everyone else should be doing and getting something actually done. She talked her way into the job and now that she is there the only thing she has done it to come up with excuse after excuse as to why she can't get anything passed...well Ms. Pelosi until you have a record that you can be proud of can I respectfully suggest you stop telling everyone what they should do and who they should vote for and how they should feel.
John, are you sure you haven't lost your marbles already?
Sorry, but how can you not mention Joe Biden? He's winning your VeepStakes competition after more than 80,000 votes, for chrissakes.
"National Review cruise?" I suppose it would be too much to hope that there's still a U-boat captain running around unaware the war is over…
Awwww, do da wittle Wepubwicans need some attenchun?

Poor babies.

I guess McCain's record is getting too much scrutiny so he needs a VP to take some of the heat off, huh?
Honestly, does any deomcrat's name other than Jack Reed excite anyone...and he's said he's not interested.  Most pundits are saying that of all the above listed people Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA) would be his best choice and lock Virginia for Obama.  If it's a geography pick, this could be the guy.

Personally, would love to see Hagel but he is a 'right to lifer' and that alone would eliminate him from contention.

You've got to remember that the media, including and especially NBC and MSNBC, is treating Obama like he was already president with their "big push," the opposite of "fair and balanced" ... call it "unfair and biased."
mcsenile-ridge...sounds realy really scary...who can forget ridges stupid color coded fear mongering...
Agree with the other comments about Pelosi above. Why doesn't she start telling us why she has broken promise after promise of what the dems would do after their sweep in 06?

Interesting report on the first page re: the possibility that Maliki is using Obama to influence the current negotiations that are going on.  Yes, Obamatons, there were negotiations going on BEFORE Stinky go there.  I'm thinking more and more, tho. If Maliki wants us to go and King Stinky thinks that's the only answer, then let's just start pulling out today.  BUT, before King Stinky starts saying how many should be sent to Afghanistan, he better talk to NATO since the war in Afg is a NATO operation and NOT a US operation.  Stinky might become King of the US but he'll have to wait a little while to be King of the World.  Others might have some plans of their own.
Mr. Bloomberg might be the only person who understands the economy.
The Truth (Sent Monday, July 21, 2008 6:35 PM)
................................................
Mayor Bloomberg is a very rich man who understands the needs of NY and big business. That means he loves traeties like NAFTA, good for NY and good for business.

Mr. Bloomberg needs to understand that free trade agreements must be good for ALL the country and not just his city.

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) was asked by Andrea Mitchell if he’s envious of the time Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) is spending with Obama abroad.
****

Good lord, it's like you people are trying to provoke a sound bite.
Obama/Biden!
A response for the McSame gas prices attack ad:

McSame is a fraud.
vp's do not matter as dems will clean sweep in nov and lead America and the world out of the bush/cheney/rove/mccant dark caves of fear and back to PEACE AND PROSPEROTY like we had before bush/cheney/rove/mccant.
It really doesn;t matter who McSame picks, nothing will help this year.....Obama will win by a LANDSLIDE......McSame will be lucky to win 11 states
This is not a problem that should be fixed piecemeal or on a state by state basis.  This country is in need of a universal healthcre system.  One set of rules for all.

Ira, Freehold, NJ

Could not agree more Ira. And, when we're done with Health Care, we'll need one set of rules for everything else. We'll all drive the same car (1 per household), all have the same type of place to work, we'll have a national uniform to wear, there will be one religion, we'll all have 1.3 children, we'll keep what ever money the government lets us have in one national bank, and we all will live in the same kind of apartment (much more energy efficent the houses). And in the morning, before work, we'll all gather in the courtyard and sing our national anthem. The US really needs less choice, less diversity, and more uniformity. It is the way of the future.

.........................................

Right now there are 50 different rules and regulations for insurance companies, one for each state. The effect is that coverage and premium vary by state.  There is no uniformity of benefits, same policy, different state.  Worse, in some states the rules favor the insurance companies.

What I was suggesting was regulation that would be standard in every state, like banking laws.  Universal healthcare would give us that benefit.

Thank you Nancy Pelosi!  I am glad she is telling these delusional bitter women to get a reality check and stop acting like unhinged, spoiled  brats.
On Hardball tonight Chris Matthews says that Obama really likes Biden for vp.  I agree.  I think Biden would be the best choice and an excellent pick.
"Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) was asked by Andrea Mitchell if he’s envious of the time Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) is spending with Obama abroad."

Why does Andrea Mitchell hate America?  Obama is trying to bring us together while she is trying to create discord and divisiveness.
John Sydney McCain III should pick Romney as his VP so that the lukewarm Evangelicals can stay home this November. Many of them feel like the Mormons are not really Christians so they could not support him on the Republican ticket. That combined with Bob Barr siphoning off 6-9% of the Republican vote in some states means we'll be looking at an Obama landslide.

"Most of the Hillraisers have been slow to give to Obama and the DNC."

Apparently they have been just as slow in giving to Hillary according to the latest figures for June.  Maybe they are tapped out?
"Despite a poll showing electoral strength, Frank James doubts we’d see a Obama-Powell ticket."

Powell made his choice when he put loyalty to Bush above loyalty to the country.
Nancy Pelosi (the WORST house majority leader in the history of the United States) is more concerned about how house members are eating rather then the American people.  She has a record that may play well in San Franscico, but then again they let murderers run the streets of San Franscisco.  She has no idea how to run congress and she is one of the main reasons why President Bush is more popular then congress.  She could never run a company, she does not have neither the stones or the gumption to even be considered to run one.  She is part of the goofy kool aid drinking left wing weirdos who seem to think that we should be a country of dope smokers and sitting on our rear ends eating KFC and drinking Colt 45.

Nancy Pelosi......
She makes stupidity seem normal......
I believe the expression is :"put on your pants and go home". (You have already lost your marbles.)
Hillary is needed in the senate, if anywhere.
Too many years of baggage and riding her hubbys coat tails does not count as experience. Can you stop your simpering now please?
Poor Andrea Michel, gets to Iraq and doesn't get a chance to ask Obama any questions. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Obama is actually using the military to show his photo ops. How unfair. What a great irony.
Ms. Pelosi,
Yoy were going to change the world!  Thanks to your inept leadership, the House of Representatives is in shambles.  Energy costs have skyrocketed and the dollar is toast.  Way to go you whiny moronic twit!
Is McCain ever going to say what his plan for anything is? All I hear him talking about are Obama's plans.

Billy, Mi (Sent Monday, July 21, 2008 4:14 PM)

Excellent question. McCain has an energy plan that includes drilling for new domestic oil, the building of many nuclear plants, building of new refineries, and funding of r&d for alternative energys.

Obama will continue to outlaw domestic drilling, outlaw nuclear plants, is waiting for the miracle to occur on alternative energy, wants to give some people rebate checks, and will tax the oil companies even more.

Which plan sounds better to you Billy?
Pelosi's record for two years of work? Raised the minimum wage. That's it. No wonder her job approval (Hey, it's her House, right?) is 9%.
Love Tom Ridge's comment! "...I'll have more to say.  If John (McCain) lets me know."  Yeah that's right Tom, it is possible that McCain will forget to tell you that he wants you to be VP. Hahahaha!!!
For a good laugh check out the crowds at a typical mccain event...they are white and look like they are mad at the world
Correction..they are white, male and mean looking
Nancy Pelosi, has been the most ineffective Speaker of the House that I can remember. What a waste.
"If Sen. Obama had had his way, the troops would have been out by this past March, and Sen. Obama voted to cut off funding for our troops in Iraq," McCain said to reporters

Yes, yes, you are so right McWar and if Obama would of had his way 4200 Americans would still be alive.  We would have saved 4 trillion dollars and had lower oil prices.  keep talking Mcwar you are helping Obama win this thing.

It is going to be Obama/Biden and McWar/McMormon
