Veepstakes: Was Novak used?

Posted: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:27 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli

THE SHORT LIST. McCain told reporters today: “When we are ready to announce, we will announce.” Bob Novak, appearing on FNC, says he got the tip from a very senior McCain aide, but acknowledges he may have been used.

From former McCain adviser John Weaver: “The vice presidential choice and the nominating speech are the only two major events under their control and they must be done correctly, not in a reactive fashion. If [Novak's report] is for real and they are about to name a vice president, it's campaign malpractice.”

ON THE RECORD. On MSNBC, Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) said he’s “stopped engaging in those discussions,” re: whether he’s being vetted. Pawlenty also appeared on Fox News, saying McCain would want to choose someone who could add to the ticket on issues and experience, and be someone he’s comfortable with.

VIDEO: A Hardball panel debates: Will John McCain choose his running mate this week?

Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) says Romney is “very much a contender” for VP, and said the two have a good relationship. And McCain himself, when asked about Romney in NH today, offered his familiar refrain: “Mitt has been of tremendous help to my campaign. He’s been on television. He does a better job for me than he did for himself. I told him. He’s been great.”

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO. Officially, Pawlenty was in Washington for a meeting of the Strategic Management of Human Capital Task Force. (Yes, it apparently does exist.) He did spend some time at McCain HQ, but was expected to be airborne this afternoon and would not rendezvous with McCain in nearby Baltimore, per an aide to the governor.

Hillary Clinton e-mailed supporters to say that while her campaign for the White House is over, “I hope that conversation continues through HillPAC.” She asks supporters to “tell me what you're concerned about right now: the issues that affect your life and the principles you want to keep fighting for. Of course, there is that big, red contribute button.

Joe Lieberman’s planned appearance with Pastor John Hagee may give McCain some headaches.

Nancy Pelosi rejected a proposal from Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) to use royalties from oil revenues to pay the state’s share of levee improvements.

Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) announced that a Spanish solar plant has signed a "non-binding" agreement with Seminole Electric in Tampa to build a thermoelectric plant and sell the electricity to the Florida municipal utility company.
Michael Bloomberg today signed an executive order requiring all city agencies to provide services in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Italian and French Creole.

Romney endorsed Wil Armstrong in the race to succeed Tom Tancredo in Congress.

Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) has a campaign debt of about $293K.

Gov. Ted Strickland (D-OH) is off most people’s short lists by now, but he’s made a careful decision not to sleep with pigs, cows or sheep at the Ohio State Fair, as apparently has been the custom. Instead, he’s going with Smokey the Bear.

VEEP VETTING. Pawlenty has “racked up” more vetoes this year than any governor in Minnesota history.

CHATTERING CLASS. Chris Cillizza makes the case for Sen. Evan Bayh, who he calls the hottest candidate in the veepstakes: he can swing IN to Obama; he looks young but has a “deep and nuanced political resume”; he’s substance first, style second; comes from central casting; and

A National Review reader suggests that if McCain is picking Romney, it would make sense to do so sooner rather than later since his personal funds could be tapped in the weeks before McCain officially becomes the nominee.

Was Novak used?  YES!
Chuck todd is biased and loves Biden. HILLARY FOR VP
Nice going FR - your streak is intact. 100% positive stories for Obama. 100% negative for McCain. We here at Obama Enterprises appreciate your support.

And bless you Barack Obama. Bless you.
Novak's been a tool of the GOP for years. No surprise to see him try a silly little stunt to shine some light on forgotten McCain.

McCain will announce Romney as Veep sometime in early August. But not this week.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Hell yeah Novak was used.
Am I wrong or are there more articles every day on this site to do with Mclazy than Barak Obama? Once again , who cares who he picks for veep? They are just trying to upstage the Obama trip which is going quite well thank you. And to think the GOP goaded him into doing this. Campaign malpractice indeed. Maybe McCrazy should follow all those GOP base lemmings right off the cliff with them. Or is that Buffalo?, well you get my drift.
On another note , they booted Ed Shultz from the Larry King show last night because their Right wingnut job didn't want Ed haranging him for saying Shultz' program was bound to fail and hasn't. That's what you get Ed for not going on MSNBC where the air is a little cleaner and at least some of the evening hosts have some balance. You go Chris and Kieth and Dan. Oh I'm so kissing behind!
THE MEDIA WAS SO STUPID TO EVER BELIEVE THIS STUNT. MCSAME WAS JUST TRYING TO GET SOME ATTENTION AND HE GOT IT.
Seems like the repubs can play Novak like a fiddle, remember the Plame deal. Bob I would quit taking their phone calls.   Connie from Indiana
Mr Novak needs to take a good look at his 'friends' - they keep making a fool out him. He must be an easy target. With friends like these...
Was Novak used?

Boy, I sure hope so- couldn't happen to a nicer guy.  Maybe he can make himself feel better by exposing more undercover CIA operatives.  Jerk.
Hello...!  Novak has shown himself to be anything but an independent journalist. His participation in the Plame incident was but one example.  He will act as just another loyal soldier trying to prop up the crumbling palace of the ruling right wing junta which continues to have a stanglehold on our country.
I remember my high school journalism teacher, back in the '60s, saying "If it's not verifiable, it's not news". Novak had something dumped in his lap and chose to run with it, without even trying to verify its authenticity. He deserves whatever embarrassment he's reaping.
Last night, only one reporter showed up to meet McCain in NH. Everybody is on the Obama trip. McCain has to "make up news" to become "newsworthy".
Novak was used.  McCain isnt going to pick his veep this week, they just said that to try and get some attention.  If I were Novak, I'd be upset.  Just goes to show McCain doesnt care who or what he has to do to win. Straight Talk at its finest. LOL
It is extremely obvious that MSNBC is simply a PR medium for Senator Barack Hussein Obama. Any posts that are critical of President Bush, Senator McCain or Senator Clinton are rapidly published without regard to factual basis and all manner of libel, slander, ad hominem attack and schoolyard name calling are allowed. Clearly the doctrine of political correctness only applies to a very select spectrum of the population. Any post critical of Obama, even in jest, are censored to point that would embarrass Goebbels.

NBC- Nothing But Censorship or National Barack Channel
Thanks for telling us that Gov. Richardson still has a campaign debt of nearly 300,000.   I will post it on the Obama site. I know his supporters will want to help out.
We really appreciated his willingness to stick his neck out for Obama, when many of the superdellies who supported Obama, didn't dare to openly declare because they couldn't stomach the backlash from the Clintons.
The "sleep with pigs cows and sheep" line is truly offensive being as Columbus Ohio is my home town...

...and we would never sleep with pigs.
Lieberman should be McCain's choice. They obviously work well together and McCain is lost without Joe by his side, whispering sweet corrections and factoids to save John from himself.  The only better choice would be GW Bush, McCain's idol and mentor.
Give McCain Some Attention!

1) Warning –McCain is trying this week to bait the Obama campaign with some negative-lite ads in order to get tacit permission to go at Obama harshly and even more negatively. We know what this means: racialized ads, Wright visuals and speculation about his wife’s comments. So, Barack might want to really examine what the best way is to respond here –it may not be with more negative ads.

2) Suggestion –If Obama decides to go negative at McCain, he should answer with an ad highlighting all of McCain’s disturbing (and continuing) gaffes: war-zone dynamics and economics in particular. McCain outright lies and we only get a blip of it in the media. What about his comments last year that it was safe to walk the streets of Iraq w/o armor (as he walks the streets with a private fleet of military escorts).

3) THE MEDIA REALLY NEEDS TO EXPLORE MCCAIN’S 8 TAXPAYER FUNDED CAMPAIGN TRIPS TO IRAQ. How many times has Bush or any other congressional figure been to Iraq? How many times did he go to Kuwait during Desert Storm? More than adding highly choreographed photo ops for his campaign, what did these trips accomplish for the American people that could not have been accomplished by talks with ground commanders and McCain showing up in the senate to do his job here at home. How much did these trips cost? What have McCain’s accomplishments been in the senate over his 20 years there? How many times has McCain voted against women’s rights? Civil Rights? Minimum wage increases?

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE PHIL GRAMM RELATIONSHIP EXPLORED. Gramm has crafted McCain’s economic policy and it is significant for the American people to know that this is the philosophy that will shape economics in a McCain administration. The American people deserve to know and explore the implications of a republican administration that wants to let them ride the economic crisis out with no relief for non-corporate entities. Why not do a month-long loop of Gramm’s comments accompanied by visuals of Gramm and McCain, McCain’s repeated endorsements of Gramm along with McCain’s debate comments that he would rely on advice from Gramm et al.

How about hour long specials about republican economics and how a McCain-Gramm economic policy would leave the struggling middle class. The mental picture: rewind to March-April and replace Wright with Gramm. Which topic is more politically relevant? Someone’s pastor or the person you have named to shape America’s economic policy in a time of crisis. Isn’t it troubling that McCain doesn’t understand the economy after almost 30 years in Congress, Gramm and Kemp weren’t there that long and they understand it. What kind of curve does McCain need?

Is McCain willing to pursue the Iraq war indefinitely -even if conditions there are bad -if it sinks the US economy and causes us to lose by default in Afghanistan? Is this a good strategy? Is this good judgment? Since we waged the war under false premises and had/have no clear objective, isn't "winning" an empty term? Can't success constantly be redefined to keep us at war and republicans in power?

What about McCain’s flip-flops on overturning Roe, his own immigration bill etc. Given his comments on economics, birth control and geographical “strategery,” McCain clearly is not in the prime of his career and he’ll admittedly be relying on advisors to do the thinking for him –shouldn’t the media be exploring this and his ability to pick credible people to handle America’s concerns? Why not put McCain on the defensive while Barack gets to quietly communicate his message to the American people. TO BE SURE, THE MEDIA HAS NOT FULLY VETTED MCCAIN AND IT NEEDS TO DO SO. Let’s get the net roots going and demand attention to McCain by the media! Thanks for the cue, Senator McCain.
Correction;

I'm sure what McCain meant to say was that Romney has done a better job for McCain than "McCain can do for himself".

I think Romney can handle himself quite well, thank you!

The man with a problem articulating his own vision is McCain.

ajarizona
And so spirals downward Bob Novaks already limited credibility.

Maybe they'll bring back Crossfire.
Romney, the ultimate flip-flopper and tired old McCain, what a ticket.
I would not doubt, the McCain campaign would use Novak to distract from Obama's trip abroad. But let's remember...the press is giving more attention to Obama. With that has come a great deal more scrutiny. The press is salivating for any mistake, misstep or gaff by Obama; analizing every word spoken. McCain, on the other hand, has been given a free pass on numerous mistakes and gaffs..too many to count as of late.
My advice to McCain..be careful what you wish for.
Hey First Read, where's the story of McCain's CBS flub from tonight?

He butchered the Ambar Awakening timeline and CBS, whether intentionally or unintentionally covered it up by playing the wrong clip.
Was Novak used? Which time? Of course he was used. Just as he was used to perpetrate the crime of revealing Valerie Plame's identity to get back at Joe Wilson. Novak has long been the lap-dog of the darkest elements of the Far-Right and continues to be now.

He is an irresponsible "journalist" that is either too unsophisticated to know he is being prostituted or too partisan to care. In either event he cannot be trusted as an honest source of news.
everybody knows what a big mouth Novak has--remember Valarie Plame---go ahead and use him
Mr. McCain on the war ......... very insightful!!!

You are absolutely correct, WE did it, Why can't they? Granted we had the help of the French, But hey we did it "ourselves" why can't they. Donna you prove your ignorance everytime you post here.
Adam, St. Louis (Sent Tuesday, July 22, 2008 10:39 AM)
***************************

Adam,

Yes we did have the help of the French, and G-D bless them for it. Their alliance with our pursuit of liberty from the British was natural as they had been bitter rivals for centuries. The last thing France wanted was for England to hold power over our tax base, land and citizenry. Initially, however, we stood alone when declaring our Independence in 1776. We were not aided by the French until 1778.

Which was the point of my post. G-D helps those who help themselves. But you want to argue, so let’s have at it.

Our new nation’s fighting force, under General Washington, was a fledgling army, which included bands of farmers who served as part-time domestic militias. The British army on the other hand was well funded, better equipped, and far more powerful. It was many, many times larger, made up of professional soldiers, and in addition, was aided by German mercenaries.

The challenges the Iraqis face are no more daunting than the odds overcome by our nation at the time of her birth.

We have solved their Saddam problem. The brutal dictator that we, (by the way), put into power. We have given them the chance for freedom, and self determination.

We will have been there over seven years by the time Senator Obama proposes we redeploy our troops. Much longer than WWII!

Given the fact that we were lied to in order for Bush to wage his invasion of Iraq in the first place, and most of the Iraqis are ready for us to leave by the end of 2010, why are you hissing like an alley cat with your back up?

It would seem you have an agenda that has nothing to do with Iraqi freedom, and security. Admit it. Your  objection stated above is a misdirection. Are you Big Oil, or did you buy it when they told you to be afraid?

We have the intelligence agencies, and enough smart bombs, nukes, and patriot missiles, etc., to blow any, and all future enemies! We had information warning us of the attack of 9/11, but inexplicably did not act upon it. The most serious threat we face, is that we have spread our military might too thin, due to Bush's, and McCain‘s malfeasance, and stubbornness.
Novak used?  No, the correct term is "previously owned".

By Rove, Libby and Cheney.
It's interesting to see that Obama would even bother to help Hillary with her campaign debt. I hope he'll do the same for Gov. Richardson, the person who actually took political flak just to help Senator Obama
Maybe Obama should just get a yamaka and stay in Israel.
Wow! Edwards busted, caught red handed by the enquirer. Check out my blog at http://twocanpete.blogspot.com
John is the candidate only because the field was so weak. John is the one picking but I can't imagine anyone wanting to work that closely with him and have to bow to all his opinions.
Gee, poor Novak.  Being used to out an intelligence agent was kind of cool, Prince of Darkness and all that, but being used as a mere political shill? How banal!
Does McCain using someone suprise anyone?  Does a republican using someone for their own selfish purposes suprise anyone?
Unnamed sources claim McCain will announce shortly, his choice of Bill Clinton as his running mate.
Novak was "used" in the same sense that my dog feels used when I feed her. When has he failed to enjoy using his personal pulpit to advance the extreme right wing agenda?

He's now squawking just for show, because his increasingly evident inaccuracies and toadyism threaten the continuing viability of his gig.
There are several good candidates out there who would not say no.  The one who makes the most sense is Mitt Romney.  His Mormonism is only an issue to religious bigots.  Look up the word "cult" in the dictionary.  EVERY religion is a cult.  Cult is used by intolerants for the sensational value.  Mitt is successful, highly intelligent and well-versed on economical matters and will not allow the United States to be walked on any longer in regards to our trade deficits.  It's probably horrible to say, but the best thing that could happen to America would be for McCain to get elected and then become too ill to continue thereby opening the door for Romney.  There are no skeletons in his closet and his integrity is unquestioned.  If Americans want more disposable income and a tax code we can understand, then Romney is the guy.  B. Hussein Obama is too frighteningly stupid, gullible and dishonest and we would be attacked on our soil again within 7 months of his presidency.  He, Hillary, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid (who is an overall disgrace to the LDS faith and as an American)need to just disappear and stay gone.  THEY are the complete and total failures and are out of touch with the dimension we live in.  I wonder when they will get around to passing some laws instead of investigating the NFL and Major League Baseball.  They are just pathetic Americans and should be stripped of the privilege to steal our oxygen.
Where is JC Watts now that we really need him?
Where is the coverage of the CBS Evening News' judicious editing of their interview with Sen. McCain in which he made a mistake and they obligingly sent it to the cutting room floor.  Moreover, someone substituted McCain's answer to a different question in its place.  Yes, the poor McCain campaign gets no breaks from the MSM.
How is it that John McCain is able to completely rewrite  the history of the surge in Iraq, CBS cuts out his answer and replaces it with something else, and it is not news?  To see MSNBC play the manipulation by omission game is disheartening.
From a previous thread:
Independent Texan wrote:

"If somehow obama wins, SOMEONE will have to do something to protect this country, its freedoms, it people, and all we stand for."

Don't worry, Obama WILL protect this country, its freedoms, it people, and all THE CONSTITUTION stands for.

"What would our fore fathers think if we turn it over to someone like him."

They would think, "Whew, they finally got rid of King George-revisited, and elected a man to uphold the principles we established."
Do the Clinton's have no money of their own?  I respect Gov. Romney for taking care of his own debt and completely turned off by silly Hillie's efforts to get her (and Obama's) supporters to pay hers off.  It's as though she's still accepting no fault for a poor campaign.  GOP VP...it doesn't matter.  McCain is sounding like Jerry Lewis' Nutty Professor and stumbling worse than Gerald Ford.  And please no Hillie for Obama.  I like Biden, Richardson, Bredesen or Sebelius.
Bob Novak may have been "used"...that is too funny..after Plamegate you would think he would be lubed up and ready to be "used" by the republicans...he is a rightwing stooge
Lindsey Graham...Lindsey Graham...where have I heard that name before? Didn't he tar and feather a real war hero who was a double amputee by convincing the poorly educated and easily conned in SC that the war hero was a terrorist loving weenie?
Had to laugh at the campaign malpractice line. If that was a viable civil offense in courts, we'd see a lot of folks running scared.

I agree on Bayh, and I'm thinking its him.

A lot of folks are looking for a Virginian. I think Obama has a great chance to win Virginia without a running mate from here, and honestly, Warner is the only one who would guarantee the state. Kaine doesn't have Warner's standing, and most Virginians understand Webb is basically an anti-war Republican who most likely differs with Obama on too many issues.

Obama has opened 20 offices here. He's making a big play for the state, and even has confused and disoriented diehard local Republicans claiming he's too organized in Virginia. Try to figure out that one.

Indiana is more of a longshot and if Bayh can help Obama put that one in play, it may be his better move.

Besides, Obama being a new name probably is looking for a known though not worn out name for his ticket. Bayh fits better, in terms of how the other 48 states would see it. Kaine isn't known, and Webb is known for his work in a Republican administration.
novak is an irrelevant, bitter old coot. he should probably be mccains running mate
Was he also used during the outing of the CIA operative Plame?
the voices in novak's head probably told him mccain
was going to announce his vp pick
Who cares about Novak.

Who cares about who McCain picks for his VP running mate.

Katie has left the bar. This race is over for all practical purposes.

We will be electing a new President who during his campaigns has outmanaged, outorganized, outmanuvered and frankly has outperformed beyond anyone's wildest dreams to take down the Clinton machine and now the Republican leftovers. Sweep all that dust left behind under the rug. Let's get moving with an Obama Presidency. By-pass any general election Presidential debates to allow McCain to step away with at least some parting dignity.
