Obama: More reviews in...

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2008 9:24 AM by Mark Murray

The reviews of Obama's overseas trip continue to be positive. From today's Washington Post: Obama "has remade the campaign's foreign policy playing field, neatly sidestepping Republican charges that he has been naive and wrong on Iraq and moving to a broader, post-Iraq focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan."

VIDEO: A Hardball panel discusses whether Barack Obama's Middle East trip will be a political success.

The New York Daily News' DeFrank writes under the headline, "Obama hits grand slam in Mideast tour; 'he's won the week' vs. McCain." "John McCain may rue the day he ever taunted Barack Obama into going to Iraq. Obama's four-day visit to the combat zones was a political tour de force, generating mega-coverage back home that left McCain gasping for traction. 'Unless he screws up in Israel or Europe, he's already won the week,' a former Bush White House aide conceded."

Perhaps the toughest day of Obama's trip happens today. The London Times: "The Democratic presidential candidate, who is struggling to win over Jewish voters in America and is viewed with suspicion in Israel, holds meetings in Jerusalem and the West Bank today during the thorniest leg of his international tour. It will be a far cry from the rapturous public reception that he is likely to receive in Berlin tomorrow." More: "Israelis are particularly suspicious of Mr Obama because of his willingness to talk to Iran’s leadership, and a perception that he is sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Unlike a visit to the region by his Republican rival John McCain in May, the Democrat will not only hold meetings in Jerusalem, but will travel to the West Bank city of Ramallah to talk with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, and Salam Fayyad, the Prime Minister."

It's surprising to see any domestic issue analysis this week but the New York Times fact-checks Obama's health care promises. "In speech after speech, Senator Barack Obama has vowed that he will lower the country’s health care costs enough to ‘bring down premiums by $2,500 for the typical family.’ Moreover, Mr. Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has promised that his health plan will be in place ‘by the end of my first term as president of the United States.’”

“Whether Mr. Obama can deliver is a matter of considerable dispute among health analysts and economists. While there is consensus that the American health care system is bloated with waste, eliminating enough to save $2,500 per family would require simultaneous and synergistic solutions to a host of problems that have proved intractable for decades."

An independent, pro-Republican group is now airing a TV ad attacking Obama -- and it’s gearing up to run more. The group, Let Freedom Ring, began airing "Both Ways Barack" last night (it was on MSNBC’s Hardball) hitting Obama for what they say is holding two positions at the same time, not just being a flip-flopper.

The ad will run for a week on national cable (MSNBC, CNN and FOX), the group's president Colin Hanna told First Read. It is produced by Demos Chrissos at Rapid Response Media, Hanna said.

The group, a 501(c)(4), is four-and-a-half years old and ran anti-illegal immigration radio ads in 2007. It was also behind the 2005 effort called, "We Need a Fence." Let Freedom Ring ran ads then, as Rep. Duncan Hunter was proposing a 2,000-mile long fence in Congress.

Hanna would not disclose donors, saying that their donor list is "non-disclosable." He added that members of the group would have discussions tomorrow about whether they would expand the buy to local battlegrounds.

I think most would agree that this trip has gone far better for Obama than anyone expected. He's looking very presidential, and he's been very well received by the foreign leaders he's met with (the king of Jordan personally driving him to the airport was a huge gesture of respect). But most importantly, he goes at a time when everything he has been saying about Iraq/Afghanistan/Iran is falling into place, with the Bush administration following his lead.

The McCain campaign can try to spin it all they want, but at the end of the day the facts remain:
* Obama has called for more diplomacy with Iran, and after fighting it and denying it for so long, that's exactly what's starting to happen.

* Obama has called for a time table for withdrawal of our troops, and the Iraqi government completely agrees.

* Obama has been saying for years that we need to focus on Afghanistan where the Taliban and al Qaeda/Bin Laden are, and that's exactly what's going to start happening.

This makes McCain look bad. He has argued against every one of these, and he has been proven WRONG. So he decides instead to focus on the one (and only) decision that he has supported that turn out positive - the surge. And so this becomes the new talking point for the Repubs - "The surge, remember the surge! Oh my god, don't forget about the surge!" ...ad nauseum. If you only listened to the McCain campaign, you'd think that this was the only important decision in this 7-year war. But, unfortunately for McCain, is was not, and all the other decisions he has gotten wrong, including the MOST important one; whether or not to start the war in the first place. For a "war hero" to have been wrong on most of the military-related decisions, when the "inexperienced civilian" got them right is a HUGE embarrassment. And this is evident in how completely negative the McCain campaign has gone in the last few days. Yesterday, McCain crossed the line altogether by essentially accusing Obama of sedition when he said he'd rather lose the war than lose an election (which is amusingly presumptuous of the McCain campaign in that it assumes that, if only Obama would agree with McCain about the surge, Obama would lose the election - not even close to true).

So this trip has certainly been a huge blow for McCain, and his campaign is now scratching and clawing in desperation. "Civility" isn't even an option - McCain is now playing Guerrilla warfare.
Senator Barack Obama continues to prove himself as a true statesman, something we've been missing for the last 7 1/2 years.

to bad for mccain that obama is loved nearly everywhere overseas.  we all keep expecting obama to make a gaffe but all we got was mccain making multiple gaffes and mccain acting like an agry old man

Republicans have to be careful. Much of the current line of attacks sounds like desparation. Undecided voters are going to need a positive message on how John McCain and Republicans will change the country for the better. Until they provide one, there is no reason to support them.
"Won the week."

There's that cynical view of the American electorate again. I'm glad I'm not hearing that language from the Obama camp, because basically it tells me that I'm no different than someone watching American Idol, waiting to see who sings better on any given night.

If you stop to think about it, this view of campaigning is really insulting - to all of us. Its as though we're only going to vote for the campaign that gets off more "winning" attack one-liners at the end of more days.
How about exposing CBS for cleaning up McCain's false statement on the timeline of the Sunni Awakening and the surge? It's a disgrace and if these mistakes aren't reported in the corporate media than those low-information voters out there are never going to learn about how truly ill-informed McCain really is on the whole Middle East (really the whole world) sitaution and are going to continue believing the myth that he's more knowledgeable on foreign affairs. So frustrating!
I saw the "Both Ways Barack" ad. Typical Republican stupidity. First they over simplify their opponent's statements, and then attack the over-simplifications.

My son is in soccer camp this week, but he's also got a bit of a cold starting up. So this evening, I'll take him to camp so long as he's feeling okay.

If I was a candidate running against Republicans, I suppose I'd be attacked for being on both sides of the soccer camp issue.
Senator Barack Obama continues to prove himself as a true statesman, something we've been missing for the last 7 1/2 years.

Really? Please list his accomplishments. Also, giving a speech is not an accomplishment. Please start with all his accomplishments as a Community Organizer, then go to all the votes he missed or voted present for as a state senator, and then document all the great legislation he has led in the Senate. I know this sounds like a lot, but it really shouldn't take you more then 30-40 seconds to put this information together.
After watching "Morning Joe" this morning, you understand the mentality of Republicans and why they are so focused on negative ads about Obama. Joe couldn't understand that the "surge" was a only part of a three part strategy that has been positive. Regardless of which "expert" told him differently, he was fixated on trying to say only the "surge" was reponsible for the current atmosphere in Iraq; thus
implying that Obama was wrong to say that the surge has not worked. Why are there some many in MSM envious of Obama? The guy goes abroad and attempts to bring dignity and respect back to this country; the rest of the world is receptive and guys like Joe (who could not represent anyone as flawlessly as Obama on a world stage) is trying to tear him down. Is he just made about the guy that the Republicans picked? Can anybody imagine McCain doing thing trip with such success?
"The Democratic presidential candidate, who is struggling to win over Jewish voters in America.."

Again with the "Jewish voter" problem.  Where is the data that backs this up?  Poll after poll show Obama getting about 60% of the Jewish vote or more while McCain barely breaks 30%.  That's a problem?

The media repeats this over and over again because they've decided themselves that he has a Jewish problem because, well, I don't know.  It's really getting tired.
Everyone except Moron Shill this AM..."Why doesn't he (Obama) admit that the surge worked?"

Uhh...because we wouldn't have needed the surge if we hadn't gone to Iraq in the first place?  How about if we had listened to Powell instead of Rummy and actually WENT IN THERE WITH A SURGE (provided we did really need to go to Iraq)?  Maybe 'cause he doesn't want to associate himself with Bush doctrine?  Gee, I don't know...

Oh, and Joe?  I can't tell you the last time that I ate a Cheeto, I don't sit around without a shirt (as women don't tend to do that kind of thing), and, unlike you, am not a pompous moron.  Not that you care about any of that, but I thought I would let you know anyway.
Obama belongs to us, we Americans.  I am so very proud of Senator Obama.  While on the world stage, he just exudes so much confidence and goodwill.  He sure makes America look good.  I really believe he will win the presidency and go on to be an excellent president.  He may be young but this guy learns the political game quickly.  I wish Senator Obama and Senators Reed and Hagel and their entourage a safe trip back home.  Obama '08
Thanks to the internet & 24/7 news channels, the American voter is more informed this year than any election to date.  Negative ads just won't work anymore.

I have an uncle who forwards me every cynical, fear mongering email he gets, trying to convince me the lies are real.  I investigate from 'official web sites' and forward him the truth to negate his beliefs.  His attitude is that of 'fear of change', vote for the old white guy, cuz he's 'safe'....

This generation is ready for new leadership - honest, intelligent, sincere leadership...

Finally....
I don't want to admit it but i am shocked and embaressed by just how feeble the Republicans have become. This guy Obama is running rings around the old fart.
How did it come to this? How is it that the Republican party has nothing but a mixed up and maybe senile old man to put up as our candidate for the toughest job in the world?
Old John had his chance 8 years ago,I admired him then, I still thank him for fighting for us. But he is just to old. he has lost it. His lack of leadership is leaving the republican party in the hands of its worst people. The mean and dishonest men who do its dirty work. We just can't turn america over to them.
I can't vote for him or this.
Another republican bites the dust.
Sorry boys but you had better wake up or you will be out of work for the next 20-30 years.

They really are looking desperate already.
The only person looking like a president in the United States in Barack Obama.  Duhbayah?...he should stick to clearing brush out in Crawford.  And Little Johnnie McCain continues to show America all he's capable of is the negative.  Bring on the debates.
States Rights - in response...
==================================
Statesman
1: one versed in the principles or art of government; especially one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping its policies
2: one who exercises political leadership wisely and without narrow partisanship

Statesmanship also conveys a quality of leadership that organically brings people together and of eldership, a spirit of caring for others and for the whole.

Anyone elected to office is a politician but only a few consistently manage to work as disinterested promoters of the public good with integrity. There is a huge difference between the two.

The words statesman or stateswoman are applied loosely to any head of state, any senior political figure, or anyone who in a given moment exhibits a certain quality of "statespersonship."

Henry Kissinger -- "The statesman's duty is to bridge the gap between experience and vision."
==================================
While you may disagree with my assessment that Senator Obama has behaved in a statesman-like manner this week, it is entirely within my right to make that assessment without having to explain myself to the narrowminded likes of you - someone just wanting to pick a fight. I choose not to engage.
States Rights (Sent Wednesday, July 23, 2008 9:44 AM)

What's his community organizing got to do with being a "statesman"?

From m-w.com:

"Main Entry: states·man
Pronunciation: \ˈstāts-mən\
Function: noun
Date: 1592
1: one versed in the principles or art of government; especially : one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping its policies
2: one who exercises political leadership wisely and without narrow partisanship"

versed in the principles or art of government? check - constitutional lecturer

one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government or in shaping its policies? check - current US Senator.

one who exercises political leadership wisely and without narrow partisanship?  check.  Much more artfully than Bush or McCheese, I might add.
Bloggers:

Remember that the media has to make it appear that this race is close so they have something to report and/or something to talk about on their news casts or talk shows. They are trying to report that t he race is close when in actuality it is not. A prime example are reports that Obama has to worry about the Jewish vote when Obama is olling at least 60% among the Jewsih community. Another example is the media's comments that Obama's trip could backfire if he makes a blunder and then watches with an Eagle's eye for such a blunder. Another example wrere reports tha tObama's campaign contributions were slowing but then he takes in over 52 million in June. Etc. Etc. Without controversey or a close race the media has nothing to report and talk show hosts as Scarborough, etc. have nothing to talk about. Any indication that this race is close or that Obama is having trouble withthis section of the country or that section of the country is being made up and hyped by the press for their benefit.
"eliminating enough to save $2,500 per family would require simultaneous and synergistic solutions to a host of problems that have proved intractable for decades."

But during those decades, there was never a mandate for change nor a change agent with the people behind him who wanted to see this system fixed. I'd be willing to see my family premiums lowered by $1000.00 if it meant quality care and equality for everyone within the system and he gets it done before the end of his first term.
Obama belongs to us, what a true and accurate statement.  I absolutely believe that Obama is having a great week.  I enjoyed watching Joe face this morning, I only turned to the channel just to see him SWEAT, wow was it great.  Joe thinks by over talking people and talking louder while they are talking, some how he will convince people he is right.  I just loved it this morning, it was awesome.  Regardless of what you think about Obama, he is strong just look at him over there.  He is ours, America's great hope and the world knows it also.
Anyone who votes for McShame is voting for an Old man who cant remember anything. He whines, he makes false accusations, he lies, he has not attended a meeting on Afganistan in 2 years, he is the most absent senator in the Hill and he is just plain old DUMB.
Lets see
Obama has been in Senate 3 years and has worked with Lugar on getting lose Nukes, passed and Ethics reform bill, was in State Senate for 8 years where he did a ton of work and has run the most organized campaign in modern day history.
Being a POW doensr make you fit to be Prez. Being in Miltary deosnt make you fit to be Prez. Look at Bush senior.
Bush did NOTHING and became prez. So Obama is no good because he actually has a brain??? Understands people and will surround himself with the best people???
Get a clue McShame lovers. McShame will put Graham back i his admin if he gets elected. The same guy who has helped RUIN this economy and called everyone who is trying to make ends meet
WHINERS. Are you watching how EVERYONE in the Mid East is receiving Obama??? King Abdullah drove Obama himself to talk to him.
get a clue people. The Whole world is watching and if you vote for McShame we are SCREWED. The World already looks  America as a bunch of FAT, entitled idiots because we are. When countries like India, Korea and China are lapping us in education we need to get a grip. The richest country in the world with the DUMBEST people.
Obama called McCain's bluff by going overseas . . . and is doing just as well there as he is in the US.

Terrible strategy by the McCain crowd, especially the golf cart thing, the 50s theme song at rallies (even if it is Chuck Berry) showing him as a POW, the 60s (hippie days) and and his speeches have turned him into a grumpy, nasty, whining and complaining old man.

McCain is dwelling to much on the past and forgetting the future.

Whatever happened to the McCain of 2000? I guess it's old age!
"the donor list for the 'freedom ring' group  is 'undisclosable'.  Republicans have a very bad reputation for never taking responsibilty or holding themselves accountable for anything.
I feel bad for those people who feel they have to pretend to believe what they are told by these groups, but I don't understand why they are willing to make themselves look so foolish when they repeat their foolishness.

I guess that is why it is always through anonymous emails and shadowy web groups that you get the distortions and lies.  Republicans  seem to believe in personal responsibility for everybody except themselves. No integrity...No honor....
Watching the coverage of Obama's trip is truly refreshing - especially after 8 years of President Alfred E. Newman in office.

As I listened to Andrea Mitchell, yesterday I could hear the anger and disappointment in her voice.  She was saying that Senator Obama, had not made himself avaiable to the media traveling with him.
Yet earlier yesterday she was the very first person he called on in Jordan.  She may be for Senator McCain; however she does not have to make it so well known.
It seems no matter what Senator Obama, does it is wrong. I have never felt so good about a person running for President since in college and feeling this way about JFK.
It's seems forever since politicians worked for the American people, as all they seem to care about is being re-elected. If it wasn't for groups like a 501(c)(4),we would be kept in the dark, about the massive economic consequences of illegal immigration. For an example is the border fence and the fact that the Democratic appropriations committee has cut funding.
At its inception, the border fence was (TWO) fences parallel to each other, with a no mans land in between. Inside the perimeter fences was a graded road for US Border Patrol to use for speedy detainment of drug smugglers, illegal aliens caught between the two obstacles. Originally designed by Rep. Duncan hunter (R-CA) it would have achieved its goal, as the his first project stretching from Mexican national border into San Diego. Even the Bush Administration fence length has been overated, because according to 'America Patrol' a pro-sovereignty group, who have surveyed by aircraft the fence. That the Chertoff border fence is well under the actual length they have stated.

Alas, the Democrats have started gutting the fence construction. President Bush has recalled the National Guard and leaving a thin, resilient line of border agents, to stop the never ending millions fleeing poverty in third world countries. Like always gullible Americans have been sold a 'bill of goods" that will never stop the occupational armies of cheap labor. Obviously, the Bush Administration, House leader and her household, have no thought for the American people and their jobs. Otherwise the original wall would have been built, where only the athletic foreign national would have scaled the last high-rise fence.

GOOGLE NUMBERSUSA for uncensored facts.
I saw a recent article about how the PUMA cult is going to try to get Clinton nominated during the convention and want her name added to the ballot.
Does anyone know how this works and can they do this?
I guess that pretty much throws Clinton's promise of backing Obama down the tubes.  Another of her lies.  I knew the Clintons weren't done causing problems for Obama.

Cheryl,

For one, most of us don't agree that obama belongs to us (americans) Don't forget 1/2 of him is NOT American ! Two, for 20 years he has hated America along with that wife. So when you look at these things, make you wonder what his real objective is !
He can con a lot of people, look at where he is now.
This man is a snake and needs to be stopped. We've already had one snake like him and his day is about up. Let's not make the same mistake again because this can speak !
I was pleased to read the thoughtful opinion piece, "Israel has no reason to fear Obama" in the Jerusalem Post by Jack Rosen, chairman of the American Jewish Congress and chairman of the Council for World Jewry. While it is a good thing given the stakes, for any voter to keep a healthy degree of skepticism as they assess presidential candidates' positions on issues of concern to them, I have yet to hear any substantive arguments against Obama with regard to supporting concerns for Israel. The Israeli-Palestinian issues are tough. But I sense there are others like myself that feel it will take an American President who is willing and capable of listening and understanding all sides of an issue to lead affected parties towards the reconciliation, peace, and prosperity they have lived too long (and died too often) without.
Anyone else notice that when someone posts asking a dem to list the accomplishments Obama has had, all the dems seem to ignore the post. Kind of funny that they ask the repubs for substance, but can't give any about their own candidate! Just funny is all.
I'm so glad I don't watch Morning Joe any more. I can recommend Harry Smith CBS in the morning.  With regard to the CBS error, my guess is that a person doing the editing had a 33 seoond spot and changed the content, not realizing the significance of the part he was deleting.
The Obama world tour has gotten tremendous coverage, and that's all fine and well.  But while he's been gone his polling numbers in Virginia, Ohio, and nation-wide have all slipped. I just hope complacency hasn't set in.
At this point, it appears that the McCain campaign, and certainly the candidate himself (using personal attacks instead of policy arguements). .is DESPERATE !
He's ATTACKING about the surge. . .which Obama has
already acknowleged worked to some degree, and additionally gave credit to the different factions in Iraq who also contributed to the decrease in violence.
And McCain has AGAIN GOT THE FACTS WRONG !!!!  WOW.
And foreign policy is his strength ????   NOT.
btw, he has cancelled a press avail today. . .what's up with that ???  I don't think McCain can survive the stress of this campaign. . .his age is beginning to show. . . and he's doing it to himself.
Walt, Ohia,
In case you can't read, she asked for someone to list OBAMA'S accomplishments. HA, the best you can come up with is a few knocks on McCain? About the mistress comment, shame no one has any proof of this, NONE what-so-ever. And Walt you know good and well he didn't "collaborate" with the Vietnamese, he actually even refused release before his fellow POW's. Walt you must be a genious, your as bad as the McCain supporters who get on here and call Obama names. Such Childish behavior. JessicaElaine posted a good question that NO ONE seems to be able to answer, and you throw a fit. Kind of sad really. Wow even the dems can't say anything "truly" good about Obama. But hey it is ok, he gives a nice speech. (Oh and Walt, if I could have had a beer Heiress I would be on it in a second!!!! So would you, and you know it. Granted I am not married, but still. She is smokin hot for her age!)

JessicaElaine,
They can "act" like Obama is god all they want, but they are just buying what he is selling. Like his Health Care idea's, that is ALL the are IDEA's, they will never be put into effect. Good initiative but bad judgement.
Adam - his accomplishments (IL & US) have been listed on this site ad nauseum (that is a Latin term used to describe something that has been continuing to the point of nausea)....

Get over yourself. Your making me "nauseous"

Wow.  I'm sorry, but you just showed how completely uneducated you are on the facts.

1/2 of him isn't American?  What are you talking about? He was born in American - by definition, he's American.  You can't be half American.

Unbelieveable that there are still people like this out there.

Only the racist and bigots of this country will say things like "he's 1/2 american"  and that he hates his country or his wife hate this country.  Completely untrue, uneducated statements.

These are the people that support the Republican party.

"This man is a snake and needs to be stopped. We've already had one snake like him and his day is about up."

You're absolutely right in that line...Bush is almost up and we cannot let McSame get in there to continue this administrations failed policies.  Obama never had your vote anyways and I can respect your decision.  It's time for change.  A change we can believe in.  I can't wait until Obama is president.

YES WE CAN!
I am constantly amazed at the mean-spiritedness of most of the Obama supporters.  John McCain, whether he is your choice or not, deserves more respect than these people are giving him.  The present political majority in Congress is responsible for making it ok for people to distort the views and malign the character of anyone who disagress with them.  What a shame our citizens has fallen so short of what they should be and how dangerous for America.  It is possible to disagree without being disagreeable or insulting-something these people should think about.
Andrea Mitchell is bitter since her precious Hillary lost.  She should be removed from covering him if she cannot refrain from showing her bias.
dear adam, it isn't funny when you look at the accomplishments of the Republicans.Even now, as bush is leaving office,he is seeking to weaken or gut safety rules that protect working americans, and done,as always,in secrecy, like all criminal regimes do.this president has committed enough impeachable
offenses for ten presidents. He has trashed our bill of rights and Constitution and not made us safe, but just the opposite. Terrorists are and always were in
Afghanistan and Pakistan, not Iraq. The consistent lying, distortions and betrayal of the national security of the US by Bush/Chny is the most monstrous
act of usurpation in American history and it will take several generations for us to undo all their crimes against us and the rest of the world.
If you think it was substance for Bush/Cheney/Rice to
convince the majority of Americans that Sept.11 was done by Saddam Hussein, and a "mushroom cloud" would be over America if we didn't invade Iraq and seize their weapons of mass dstruction, you probably wouldn't be able to recognize the truth since you have been believing lies for so long. When Obama tells
the truth every time he speaks, you must think its just campaign rhetoric.Just put Bush in front of a real group of Americans, like in Virginia recently, and you will see how we have discovered the truth about him,a man who says he has "freedom of speech" but doesn't respect anybodys freedom unless  they give him millions for his accounts, his library, and are assured they will get their moneys worth in political favors and policies that will be at the expense of the American people. Obama will not sell himself and the American people for the good of a group of billionaires who care nothing for us or for their country.
Obama '08

Raised 25 million dollars on June 30th...Monday June 30th.

I think your friend McCain did a little under that for the entire month of June.

Seriously though, try the Google. It can show you his legislative record.
Read "Dreams from My Father" as well. It helps with some illumination.
