Obama vs. McCain: A tough attack

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2008 9:29 AM by Mark Murray

McCain yesterday launched one of his toughest attacks yet on Senator Barack Obama, saying his Democratic rival ‘would rather lose a war in order to win a campaign.’”

The Washington Post: “Obama said he had hoped to avoid political warfare with his rival while overseas, but the attention the candidate's trip is receiving in the United States and potential implications for the November election makes that all but impossible. Minutes after the news conference, McCain's campaign issued a statement blasting the Democratic candidate. ‘By continuing his opposition to the surge strategy long after it has proven successful and by admitting that his plan for withdrawal places him at odds with General David Petraeus, Barack Obama has made clear that his goal remains unconditional withdrawal rather than securing the victory our troops have earned and the surge has made possible,’ spokesman Tucker Bounds said.”

VIDEO: Race for the White House panelists Rachel Maddow and Stephen Hayes debate which presidential candidate, Barack Obama or John McCain, is showing better judgement on Iraq.

Obama declared yesterday that there is a "growing consensus" in the United States and Iraq for a timeline to withdraw American combat forces, and that the United States now urgently needs to turn its attention to Afghanistan. "If we responsibly end the war in Iraq, we can strengthen our military, step up our efforts to finish the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan, and succeed in leaving Iraq to a sovereign government that can take responsibility for its own future," Obama said at his first news conference since touring Afghanistan and Iraq. "The situation in Afghanistan is perilous and urgent," he said, calling the country the "central front in the war against terrorism."

Another McCain gaffe? The AP: “‘Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening,’ McCain said, referring to the U.S.-backed revolt of Sunni sheiks against al-Qaida in Anbar province. ‘I mean, that's just a matter of history.’ The problem with McCain's statement -- as Obama's campaign quickly noted -- was that the awakening got under way before President Bush announced in January 2007 his decision to flood Iraq with tens of thousands of additional U.S. troops to help combat violence.”

“McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said late Tuesday, ‘Democrats can debate whether the awakening would have survived without the surge ... but that is nothing more than a transparent effort to minimize the role of our commanders and our troops in defeating the enemy, because to credit them would be to disparage the judgment of Barack Obama and praise the leadership of John McCain.’”

The Washington Post editorial page is not buying into the narrative that somehow Iraqi leaders are others are supportive of Obama's withdrawal plan.

Meanwhile, the New York Times’ Tom Friedman says both McCain and Obama are right about Iraq. "All of which suggests that the right position on Iraq today is probably ‘McBama’ — stick to a clear withdrawal timetable because post-surge Iraqi and American politics will tolerate nothing else — but leave yourself some wiggle room if things keep getting better, but not exactly on schedule. Always remember: the more Iraq is seen as succeeding on its own, without U.S. scaffolding, the more positive impact it will have on the neighborhood.’”

And Joint Chiefs Chairman Mike Mullen last night told PBS’s Jim Lehrer that withdrawal from Iraq needs to be conditions based. But he also agreed with Obama that Afghanistan is "urgent” and that troop levels in Iraq have an impact on American military strategy in Afghanistan. "I think it is," Mullen said. "It is urgent. It is one where the violence is growing."

JIM LEHRER: Why don't we have more troops there, Admiral?
ADM. MIKE MULLEN: Well, we are very committed to -- with a significant number of troops in Iraq… And until we get to a point where we reduce that commitment, we won't have significant additional troops to add to Afghanistan.
JIM LEHRER: So troops have to be withdrawn from Iraq before troops can being added to Afghanistan in any sizable way?
ADM. MIKE MULLEN: In any significant manner, that's true.

mcidiot is getting disgusting to look at. his ad's are disgusting. The american people want real change in washington.
mcwar= bush
obama 08,12
Not only did MCWAR highly endorse and support

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!  yeh, right!!??????? where, did I miss it?????

MCCain is NOT a leader; all he knows is how to attack....the very thing he said he was above doing in his campaign...yeh, right!!!
His ads so far have been only attack and more than not, inaccurate!!!  The reason being is that he has nothing worth while to say!!!!

So much for the GOP whiners; they've got that down pat!!!
Love watching Republicans thrash and whine,
out-maneuvered, out-marketed, and out-thought.
With all due repsect toot Senator McCain for his  military service, could someone please explain to me how his experience as a POW, and crashing 5 military jets translates to a reason that he is the best qualified to serve as commander-in-chief?

I don't see that it qualifies him to do anything.

David Anders, Texas,  before you go off the deep end about trouncing a person's military background-----let me reimnd you that it was the repuke party during the last election election cycle that called on 2 senators and also veterans around the country who did not support the dunce in chief policy about Iraq as "Unpatriotic".  Just thought I would remind you of who started that crap in the first place.  No I don't agree with doing the same but people need to be reminded of just what the repuke party will do in the name of the party.
Derek Anderson:  That Bottom Feeder is about to become POTUS and your candidate is looking more and more like an A$$ every day.
Problem is, Full of it of 9:38 fame,

Senator McCain just isn't a popular person. Whether it be the many foreign policy mistakes he makes like putting Iran and Pakistan next to each other; the fact he won't answer a simple question like the viagra question (by the way, has he gotten back to at least you yet, as I don't recall any follow up report that he did get back to us as he promised) or his failed economic ideas like the gas tax holiday, people both in America (which is where it counts) and abroad don't seem to warm up to McCain.
Instead of blasting Senator Obama on why people DO LIKE HIM, I think it's more constructive to see what can be done to shore up McCain.
How dare McWar essentially accuse a fellow US Senator of Treason. There should be an immediate apology for these obnoxious comments.

Jim  -- it is what it is ! Thats why that man does NOT belong in the white house !
John Sydney McCain III does not deserve credit for the escalation known as the surge yet he claims it was the surge that enabled the true reducer of violence, the Sunni Awakening to occur.

During the interview with Katie Couric where McCain was asked why Obama was not giving the surge credit:

McCain: I don''t know how you respond to something that is such a false depiction of what actually happened. Colonel McFarlane (phonetic) was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that''s just a matter of history."

The reality on the ground: The military commanders who were in Iraq in 2006 wrote that the Sunni Awakening had begun (this was 4 months before the president ordered an escalation known as the surge) and they noted that local sheiks has become tired of being used by foreigners. They noted the addition of  local police and the growing cooperation of the local governments with the Iraqi government and the locals willingness to fight the insurgents. The "false depiction" is coming from Mr. McCain. He has no clue as to what is going on and gives himself credit for something that happened organically and in spite of the Americans. His credibility is zero, as is that of CBS news which edited his remarks and dropped his mis-statements about the Sunni Awakening in its evening broadcast. The unedited transcript shows what McCain really said and its not the patched together interview that CBS aired.

DAVID ANDERS, TEXAS,

Is probably one of those same people that were up in arms over the pastor's unfortunate statement in the first place. But, now that it suits his needs, he's all for the phrase.

Typical.
Obama couldn't whip his way out of a Hefty bag. He's full of hot air, a big phony who says what he thinks people want to hear. The walls around him will soon come tumbling down.

-------------------------

What is that all about? I realize that people tune out Obama when he's speaking, just as I tune out McCain. But at least once a day some right wing soothe sayer posts some variation of this.

Why not pick apart what he's saying? Instead of attacking the man? You might actually change a few minds.
wE ARE CLOSE TO ELECTING A MAN WHO HAS RUN NOTHING BUT HIS MOUTH OVER A WAR HERO THAT WAS TORTURED FOR 5 YEARS. DAVID ANDERS, TEXAS

McCain seams to be a decent man but when he defends the policies of King George   Bush he loses all creditability. As it has been said crashing a plane does not qualify you to be POTUS. Hell you put one dumb pilot in the Whitehouse and look how that turned out. Obama may have a big mouth but he also has big ears and that is all I care about I’m tired of deaf leaders.

“‘Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening,’ McCain said, referring to the U.S.-backed revolt of Sunni sheiks against al-Qaida in Anbar province. ‘I mean, that's just a matter of history.’.....

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Leave it to McCain to forget the chronological order of events. He forgot to say '' I mean I drove that tanker myself, heck! I coined the phrase 'The Awakening'.
All these comments about gaffes? What for? I guess you people have never mis-spoken about a topic? All your complaining about it tells me is that all you require in a President is the ability so speak without error. Wait, that is what we have in Obama. I will give him credit where it is due, He sure can talk like he knows everything, shame he hasn't accomplished anything. Kind of like how 2 years ago, everyone thought Pelosi was the greatest female politician in the world. What???? all she does is talk too? No way! That good old Democratic Congress has worked wonders hasn't it?

Point taken. Nevermind.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE MORALS IN THIS COUNTRY? WE ARE CLOSE TO ELECTING A MAN WHO HAS RUN NOTHING BUT HIS MOUTH OVER A WAR HERO THAT WAS TORTURED FOR 5 YEARS...  DAVID ANDERS, TEXAS

____________________________________________________

Really?  You prefer the morals of one who would divorce his wife on her deathbed to marry a trophy wife?  Really?  Stop shouting...you're confusing stance is loud and clear without the caps lock on.
DAVID ANDERS from Texas- you can't be serious.  Obama and McCain both have a significant amount of legislative experience.  Neither have run anything except campaigns and Obama is much more adept.  Yes McCain served his country in battle, while Obama only served his country in the community.  But why would we decide who is going to run the country based upon miltary service.  And if we did, we could find someone more distinguished than McCain.  Obama would never say God D--- Ameirca (even if this country chose to elect another intellectually challenged baffoon over him.  What kind of patriot are you to say that you would?  Ask yourself where that kind of hatred comes from? Obama has also devoted his life to serving this country.  What have you done that went beyond your own self interest?
A quick trip to the middle east does not make one experienced. Even if he has been crowned the prince of the democratic party.Obama continues to be unimpressive, no matter what the news media says.
