Veepstakes: Jindal meeting canceled

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2008 6:50 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli

THE SHORT LIST. Per Adam Aigner-Treworgy, McCain was asked his feelings on Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN). “He’s a great, fine person. Reelected in one of the toughest reelection years in the history of the Republican Party. He comes from a -- his father I am pretty sure -- drove a truck. He has pretty successfully been able to work across the aisle in Minnesota with the Democrats. And I think he is, he, Bobby Jindal and a number of governors, I think are the future of the Republican party. The next generation of leadership.”

Earlier today, McCain mentioned his “beloved friend” Tom Ridge at a Pennsylvania fundraiser today, adding: “I think he’s one of the ideal Americans that I have ever known.”

VIDEO: Former New York City mayor and one-time presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani joins Hardball's Chris Matthews to talk about John McCain's V.P. search and Barack Obama's overseas trip.

Jeff Sadosky, a McCain aide, said predictions of rough weather Wednesday night, including strong thunderstorms, led the campaign to cancel the McCain trip to New Orleans.  McCain’s camp says they’ll reschedule the meeting with Jindal.

Marc Ambinder offers some details on McCain’s veep preparations, with a full time staff dedicated to the eventual pick. He also downplays McCain’s mention of Pawlenty in a meeting with NH supporters, and reports that Romney supporters are suggesting he make his pick sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, Bob Novak updates his take on VP: “The identity of McCain's running mate, whenever he is named, still is unknown. But former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney now leads all speculation. He is getting a boost from private polls that show his presence on the ticket puts McCain ahead in Michigan -- changing that state from Blue to Red.”

ON THE RECORD. Fox News takes Jindal at his word when he says he’s not going to be VP. “Let me be clear: I have said in every private and public conversation, I’ve got the job that I want. And I’ll say again on air: I’m not going to be the vice presidential nominee or vice president. I’m going to help Senator McCain get elected, as governor of Louisiana,” he said this morning.

Talking about the importance of Pennsylvania, Rudy Giuliani said on “Hardball”: “I think Tom Ridge is a very strong candidate.”

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO.
Mike Allen reports that McCain had a private breakfast with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) in the Hamptons this weekend.

Mike Huckabee, who is traveling with Cindy McCain apparently had his own airline mishap yesterday in Rwanda.

Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) is expected to return from the Middle East tonight.

Gov. Janet Napolitano (D-AZ) touted Obama at her weekly press briefing. “When you think about it, when Clinton became president in 1992, he had less experience than Obama has,” she said. “Some would say that, when George W. Bush came into the presidency, he didn't have much foreign policy experience, either. And he surrounded himself with people who had tons of experience, and look at what's happened over the last seven years."

Joe Biden’s staff director for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was on Obama’s Mideast trip.

Michael Bloomberg will speak at the Independence Party of Minnesota’s fundraiser.

Hillary Clinton stood right behind Pres. Bush as he signed a legislation on 911 services.

There will be a fundraiser for Obama and Clinton’s behalf this week in Wisconsin.
John Edwards’ poverty crusade continued in Houston today.

An LA Times blog, meanwhile, looks at the National Enquirer rumors. Per Drudge, Edwards has responded: “I don't talk about these tabloids. Tabloid trash is full of lies.”

BUZZ METER. Reuters takes a big picture look at the veepstakes, and finds that both sides have succeeded in keeping things out of the headlines.

Newt Gingrich doesn’t want any more boring white guys, and would like either Jindal or Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK).

Michigan Democrats have a new Web ad attacking Mitt Romney’s record on jobs in Massachusetts. The tag line: “John McCain might trust him on the economy. But you can’t afford to.”

The Louisiana GOP releases a poll today promoting Jindal’s popularity in the state.

Former Rep. Vin Weber (R-MN) says the names he keeps hearing are Romney, Jindal and Pawlenty.

ObamaBayh08.com, which once redirected to Obama’s Web site, now redirects to the DNC Web site. The Obama camp said the domain isn’t controlled by the campaign. Yes. That’s what this has come to.

VEEP VETTING. Wall Street Journal reminds that McCain once said his party wouldn’t tolerate a pro-choice VP.

Today’s hearings on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” could provide a “delicate moment” not only for Obama, but possible running mate Sam Nunn

The mini-scandal for Sarah Palin continues as her pick for state Public Safety commissioner denies harassment allegations.  She released another public statement to debunk what she calls the “latest falsehoods.”

CHATTERING CLASS. Chris Cillizza now makes the case against Evan Bayh: that he either is committed to bipartisanship or “a sign that he doesn't believe in much of anything”; his selection might be seen as a slap at the liberal left; he may be too safe; he is on the record bashing Obama as a former HRC surrogate.

Wall Street Journal online also profiles the Indiana senator, and wonders: “Would picking Bayh as No. 2 undercut Obama’s message of a new political era, or would it be the best way to consolidate the Democratic Party without Clinton herself on the ballot?”

National Review’s Geraghty thinks Carly Fiorina will be on the final list, pointing to her work as a surrogate, unique business experience, outsider status, and appeal to HRC backers. Says she’s been vetted from her years in business world.

"Meanwhile, Bob Novak updates his take on VP:"

Did he post this from Central Booking?  Funny, when the average American hits a pedestrian with his car and flees the scene, there tends to be serious consequences.  Not for right-wing mouthpieces, though.

And speaking of right-wing mouthpieces...

Thanks for your concern, WSJ, but the Democratic party is consolidating quite nicely behind Senator Obama.  His choice of VP will be someone that shares his governing philosophy, not someone that is plugged in to "appease" any perceived malcontents.
Evan Bayh....sounds like an elitist...should Obama pickup that baggage?
Hillary makes the best case...Bill will be her only setback to Obama...oh did she say Obama was an elitist too?....
That might give her the GoodBayh too.
By the way all you Jindal rumor makers and liars...
Jindal is a Roman Catholic...

and a million times more honorable than you...
So McCain is going to NOLA tomorrow to do an event to tout off-shore oil drilling, flying out to a rig on a helicopter, trying to be all Jack Bauer the oil man. His agenda: demonstrate how easy, safe, and important more offshore drilling is.

But there's a problem: today, on the eve of this stunt, there was a huge oil spill in NOLA....a 600-foot tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided Wednesday, breaking the barge in half, more than 419,000 gallons of heavy, almost tar-like fuel oil spilled from the barge, forming a slick 12 miles long, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman.

For those of you looking to attend this event.....It was canceled, he's going to Ohio instead.

You can't make this stuff up....
Newt Gingrich doesn’t want any more boring white guys, and would like either Jindal or Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK).

********************************

...And posters here ask, "just what has Barack Obama ever done"?

Gingrich, and the Limbaugh type from the neocon class of repub have been forced to this kind of acceptance, by Senator Obama's sky rocketing candidacy.

They may be mean, but they are not stupid. We've crossed a new colorblind frontier, and we ain't ever going back.
Good grief. Bill Clinton had been governor of Arkansas for 12 years. He was the longest-serving governor in the country at that time. Previously he had been Attorney General in Arkansas.

He had a record of accomplishment in Arkansas, he had done great things for that state. Hillary had also accomplished things, such as a reorganization of the Arkansas school system.

Bill's foreign experience came from work with European s on world trade matters.

Ok... I'm convinced... McCain is a complete moron!

Let's see, you blame the price of oil going up on America's dependency on foreign oil... yet, you try to give credit to Bush for the price drop because he lifted the executive order which banned off-shore drilling?

How about giving Americans that credit, Bilbo Baggins?  Americans have started carpooling, riding bikes, etc... and the demand dropped some 700,000 barrels compared to this time last year!!

I'm sold this guy is howdy doodie in disguise.

Mark, Seattle: I don't think you're being banned at all. Chuck, Mark & Domenico are very professional and pretty open minded about what gets posted. I too believe they are just busy and it looks like they work long hours.

I agree! Where's Eric? There are some really terrific people here. Smart, funny, intense & just plain nice.

If Chuck & Co. can put up with us for just over 3 more months, then they deserve something (I thought a free trip to Berlin would have been a wonderful bonus) but I guess it wasn't to be. Must cost a small fortune to send staff all over the Middle East and Europe.

But they sure have taken a lot of grief from people here, undeservedly. They're journalists. We're not. That's the difference.

It sure is a nice Board to visit and read what people are thinking all across the country. But I really do think they do a nice job at running/editing it.

Keep trying. The time difference may be one issue, but I don't know for sure.

3 1/2 more mos. That's it guys.

I don't like to play rumormill or partisantry, but McCain and Romney attacked each other more ferociously than Obama and Clinton. McCain gave many, many a reason for conservatives to despise Romney. Sure, his VP selection could attempt to pull over liberal or left-leaning moderates, but it's just going to piss off conservatives; especially those of the religious, and yes even fiscal, persuasion. After all, McCain painted him as a taxnspender, pro-abortion libby (all of which are at least somewhat true--before he flipped his positions in the primary).

Janet Napolitano just made her own point. Baby Bush didn't have much experience and look at the mess we're in now. If there's anything we don't need it's an inexperienced flip-flopping media star. Obama should take his tour over to the tryouts for "American Idol".

"The latest falsehoods."

Hard to keep up, no, Sarah?

BTW...Carley has never been in the least consideration.  If she keeps her nose clean she may get a cabinet spot in a (very) putative McCain regime.

Seems its not just the media that are not cooperating with McCain.  Weather caused cancellation of his trip to an oil platform.  One wonders if the oil spill in the Mississippi would have been the best back drop for a speach in favor of offshore drilling.  Hey, when things go wrong...sometimes they just get worse.
Cancelled because McCain got wind that Jindal didn't want to be VP.  Got to hand to to Jindal.  He's at least smart enough to know that his political career will go much further if he stays off the doomed McCain ticket.
Bad weather? How about the OIL SPILL

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard closed 29 miles of the Mississippi River at New Orleans after a 600-foot tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided Wednesday, breaking the barge in half.

Nobody was injured, but more than 419,000 gallons of heavy, almost tar-like fuel oil spilled from the barge, forming a slick 12 miles long, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman.

The barge "was T-boned and split in half," she said.

The double-hulled tanker Tintomara was loaded with about 4.2 million gallons of biodiesel and nearly 1.3 million gallons of styrene, but was not leaking, said Michael Wilson, president of ship management company Laurin Maritime (America) Inc. in Houston.

The collision occurred about 1:30 a.m. CDT just upriver from the Crescent City Connection, a pair of bridges between New Orleans' east and west banks. A smell which many people thought was diesel was noticeable in the French Quarter and parts of New Orleans' central business district.

The river was closed about 3:30 a.m., about 45 minutes after someone reported a strong odor of diesel coming from the river, Young said. Tug boats were holding the halves of the barge in place, she said.
God, what a week....

Liberals are allowing gangs in San Franscisco to kill innocent people and get off scott free and now they want to make prostitution legal....

Liberals want poor Americans to pay higher gas prices and Nancy Pelosi doesn't care......

Liberals trying to smear fox news, saying they are racist and I watched some girl trying to explain that she was at some rally against Fox News and she got an e-mail from Moveon.org and did not know what the rally was about LOL.....

You libs are just dragging your party down more and more every day.
Why wouldn't McCain want to consider Condoleeza Rice as his running mate?  I'm a Democrat who would vote that ticket.  It would also tip the scales for my
usually-Republic husband who is wary of McCain.
Was Jindal even a serious candidate? He's got some mini-scandals in Louisiana as well as zero experience. Romney's the guy.

A band from Southern California has written and recorded a song for the Obama campaign,,,,here it and comment on it now!!! They haven't acknowledged it,,,,we don't know how to get them to hear it.

Please listen to it here:

Bill Curd (Sent Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:46 PM)

Took a listen. And, just like the candidate, it sucks.
What is the post about Clinton standing behind Bush even supposed to mean?
Now, back to me.

Yes Amy. This is all about you.
There is a reason why there are so many active blogging obama supporters...

Unemployed?
I know this comment is directly to one of the topis in this thread but I want to say this... McCain made a HUGE blunder regarding the timeline of the surge in his CBS interview.  I'm angry at the media for covering it up and ignoring the significance of what happened.  The one main stream media exception is Keith Olberman.  Keith called it right.  The sunni awakening was probably the most significant factor in the improved security situation and that happened well before temporary increase in US troops.  McCain tries to give himself too much credit and that's what leads him to lie about the timeline.  His claim is like Hillary Clinton's claim to have survived sniper fire.  It just didn't happen the way McCain claims and he should be called on it.

McCain is also being allowed to lie about having opposed the mismanagement of the Iraq war.  McCain has been a big Bush cheerleader from the very beginning.  McCain needs to be called out on this.
Carly Fiorina wouldnt really be a great choice for McCain.  He escaped pretty easily earlier this month when Fiorina was going around saying McCain agreed with her that insurance companies that cover viagra should also cover birth control.  McCain disagrees with that position and has actually voted against such a perposal.  Also, she kept stating that McCain doesnt want to overturn Roe v. Wade.  Well actually he does.  He has stated that very thing on the campaign trail and it is also posted on his web site.  So, I dont think having Fiorina around contradicting McCain's positions is really a great idea.  Also, it was a little disappointing when Fiorina was on Meet the Press, Mr. Brokaw didnt even question her about either of those gaffes.  Im pretty sure Tim wouldnt have let that slide.

BTW...
Just check out Carly's "vetting."
No VP here.
Not even in an imaginary McCain regime.

Janet Nap is a democrat who doesn't respect the idea that Bill Clinton was our most successful democratic president in modern history. Why? Because he knew how to be an executive. He was a Governor much longer than Obama has been a freshman senator... He did not lie about supposedly being a person who called cross the aisle. He portrayed himself as something Obama could never amount too. He was in the public eye longer as well. Gov. Janet Nap, Rake - up some facts before you start shoving your beliefs in our faces. I am sick and and tired of your constant bashing. Give them some peace and credit for what they have accomplished.
Hey Chuch, Where is the Veepstakes ranking???
Interesting how Carly Fiorina, who did not even understand McMisogynist's stance on womens issues, is on the list.

On January 7, 2004, Fiorina said, "There is no job that is America's God-given right anymore. We have to compete for jobs as a nation." --angering Bay Area workers who felt that lower wages overseas encouraged U.S. corporations to use less-qualified, offshore workers, instead of better-qualified American ones.

"The latest falsehoods."

Hard to keep up, no, Sarah?

BTW...Carley has never been in the least consideration.  If she keeps her nose clean she may get a cabinet spot in a (very) putative McCain regime.

The notion that Romney will help McCain carry Michigan simply because Romney's father was governor there 45 years ago is absurd! How many Michigan voters even remember that, let alone care?

The only reason McCain is close is because he is perceived as a different kind of Republican. Picking Romney hurts that. Romney won't bring a single independent vote or any republican who isn't already backing McCain.
What about hiding his baby daddy action?
What about Edwards baby daddy thing?

"The latest falsehoods."

Hard to keep up, no, Sarah?

BTW...Carly has never been in the least consideration.  If she keeps her nose clean she may get a cabinet spot in a (very) putative McCain regime.

McCain should apologize on air to Obama for his holocaust remark. The media should continue to press McCain on this horrific statement. There should be no free ride - no teflon. It does not attack policy - but person. McCain should be ashamed of how he and his campaign are behaving.
I cannot believe the mainstream media is being so biased and not covering this Edwards affair the way it covered Craig and other Republicans for similar offenses.  This is so obvious how they are covering for him again.
Bob Novak is a red light-running criminal who pretends not to notice when he's mowing down senior citizens in the crosswalk, even when they fly over the hood and windshield of his Corvette, and who has a long history of joking about his sociopathically negligent driving behavior. If I commit a hit-and-run too, will you print my rambling opinion on McCain's forthcoming VP pick?
Dude, get your facts straight.  Pawlenty HAS NOT worked well with Democrats in MN.  There has been a stand off on nearly every issue.  Our local governments are broke, our roads are going to hell, and the MN Care health program is in tatters.  All because Pawlenty has stubbornly stood by his no new taxes pledge.  Sound familiar, maybe like our current chimp-in-chief?

Pawlenty is an idiot and only won in 2006 because the Democratic nominee completely imploded in the last two weeks of the campaign.
Interesting - the stakes keep getting higher....

The supposed consideration of a non-white formerly Hindu exorcist for VP was just an act so Republicans could all feel good about how multicultural they are.  The idea that McCain was going to pick this guy when he needs to appeal nationwide to the wacko right base was always nonsense.  So is the idea of a woman.  McCain will pick a regulation white guy.

It's easy for Republican Presidents to find minorities to appoint and then brag about.  It's a lot harder getting Republicans to vote for them, especially in statewide, much less nationwide elections.  There's a reason the vast majority of women and minorities in Congress, for instance, are Democrats. It's the same here in Colorado in the state legislature.  It's not as if Bush had to get the base to VOTE for Colin or Condi.
What?  Obama had as much experience as Bill Clinton??

People are in the twilight zone...wow.
I am happy to say that Obama has my vote, for the mere fact that I could not vote for Mc Cain because he was a collabertor in the Vietnam War, he collaberated to get special medical Attn: for his legs from the enemy when he got shot down in Vietnam these are the things that the common public does not know he was getting medical treatment while other prisoners suffered because they would not give in, also Mr.McCain how can you sleep at night or live with yourself knowing that when you were in charge of the Senate Select Committee investigating Prisoners of War being left behind in Vietnam, you abanded our brothers and our countries former P.O.W.s in capture, there is know way that I or other Veterans in general that have a good concious could vote for you as the President of the United States, and if someone does Vote for you they have no complaint comming when McCain abandons your Family in Middle East protecting your freedoms !!!
Is there REALLY a chance McCain will take Pawlenty?

Golly gee whiz!!!  I think I've died and gone to heaven.  McCain can't win here anyway, and it will get Pawlenty out of the state for at least three months.  That should also help Franken's chances.  Sweet.

Obama 08/12
Pawlenty = no name outside MN

Ridge = yawn

Romney was dreadful as a candidate in the primary. Why would we help now? Plus, he's creepy.

Jindal is the only intriguing pick, but he's a big risk. Because of his age and ethnicity, he'd seem like a gimmick. Plus, McCain and Jindal just don't look right together. The image is forced. I also see Jindal getting crushed in the dabates, assuming Obama picks Biden or Clinton or Webb as vp
I'm starting to think none of these republican guys want to run with McCain - especially ones that have somewhat secure positions now. Maybe Romney would take it, but actually I think McCain is facing second thoughts about his own candidacy from within the GOP, and we may see a floor fight for the nomination. It's really quite bizarre - he shows up in PA to give a speech and the place is only half full. How can he win? The polls are strange too - as they show a close race. It's very surreal.
Do you really think the new guy (Jindal) on the block wants Bush/McCain to define his politics, duh, Immmm....no no no, I don't think so.  The republican party is twisting his arm, but trust me, he will chew his arm off at the joint before he gets trapped in that trap.
If you're really interested in knowing who the next VP will be, stop reading pundit speculation and go here:

http://lisajean.new.newsvine.com/_news/2008/07/18/1677618-astrological-predictions-obama-bayh-2008
Has anyone ever seen Andrea Mitchel say anything positive about Obama?? She should not cover his campaign. She clearly does not like him, it's so obvious even the blind can see it..
Hmm, there's still a lot of buzz about a Thursday surprise for McCain:

http://strategy08.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/mccain-planning-surprise-tomorrow/

Should be an interesting day
Yes!  Pawlenty for VP.  Then Minnesota can elect a decent Gov.
There are some unresolved issues. When PUMA and dozens of other grassroots organizations and political activists agreed to band together and call the movement-- Just Say No Deal. Their claim of before the 4th of July they raised money for Hillary, and so far have raised approximately $10 million. And other sources have said that they are less than $5 million from Hillary being in the black. Yet that claim was by the weekend of July 4th Hillary's debt would be finished.
Well this is going into the 3rd weekend from July 4th. Where’s the moolah?  Maybe the answer lies in this link…
http://www.hillpac.com/action/issues/?sc=2498&utm_source=2498&utm_medium=e
Now Hillary wants to reach out and ask these groups what they want.  Well, I certainly hope she and Bill thank them and appreciate their donations. I also hope she and Bill have the courage to let those supporters know this tactic plays into McCain’s hands. I really cannot afford to tighten my belt for another 4 years.
