Obama: A 'partisan political event'?

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:16 AM by Mark Murray

Der Spiegel has blow-out Obama coverage:
-- "Debate over Germany Trip Leaves Team Obama Frustrated"
-- Obama's Star Status Frustrating McCain
-- Berlin Reopens World Cup 'Fan Mile' for Obama
-- An American Idol in Germany

VIDEO: Barack Obama arrives in Berlin to begin the European leg of his foreign tour. He's set to speak about his vision on the ties between the U.S. and Europe. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The State Department has labeled today's Berlin speech by Obama as a "partisan political event" -- meaning US embassy personnel are being told not to attend. "Government employees serving in the United States are permitted to attend such events under the Hatch Act, which bars other partisan activity, such as contributing money or working in behalf of a candidate.” But: “‘We always maintain that no U.S. government Foreign Service person overseas should be seen to be advocating one side or the other,’ State Department Undersecretary for Management Patrick Kennedy said, adding that ‘it has nothing to do with who’ the candidate is. ‘When a German sees you there, they're not going to think, “Oh, he or she is on their off time.” It's “Oh, they are a Democrat, a Republican, an independent,” God knows what,’ Kennedy said in an interview."

The RNC is up with radio ads hitting Obama for his lack of support for troop funding last year. The ads are running in all three US cities named Berlin in PA, WI, and NH, as well as all three US cities named Paris in ME, MI, and MO.

But we wonder why the RNC left out Paris, VA? Perhaps with a town size of just 49 people, they don't have a radio market to buy?

"GOP gripes: So we're running against President Obama?" "Alex Conant, an RNC spokesman, quipped, 'At this rate, it's only a matter of days before he opens his presidential library.'"

The Washington Post takes a look at how meticulously Obama's trip to Israel was planned and how sensitive the campaign was to making a good impression on Jewish voters here in the US. "Plans for yesterday's swing through Israel and the West Bank were hashed and rehashed, down to who would accompany the candidate, what venues he would appear at, whom he would meet, and even the order of those meetings. ‘There was some very serious thought that went into this,’ said Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a national co-chairman of the Obama campaign who consulted with the campaign about the trip.”

“Obama aides considered taking some Jewish lawmakers on the visit, but then thought the idea was potentially demeaning. Instead, Obama's travel mates included Dennis Ross, a prominent former Middle East peace envoy, and Eric Lynn, a former House aide, Chicago community activist and Obama's liaison to the Jewish community. There was some talk of scuttling a planned news conference, for fear that any slip would be magnified by the attention the Jewish community is paying to the visit. Obama, in the end, did talk to the media."

"While in Israel, Obama seemed to put as hawkish a face possible on his agenda," the Boston Globe writes. "He said he would refuse to negotiate with Hamas, the militant Palestinian faction that controls the Gaza Strip, and framed a willingness to engage Iran -- including a personal encounter with its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- as part of an aggressive stance toward the country, not an accommodating one. Obama said it was important 'to exhaust every possible avenue' with the Iranian government, while suggesting obliquely that a failed diplomatic effort could help efforts to marshal international support for other forms of action."

The London Times' second most popular story today: "The US presidential nominee was heckled as he visited the Western Wall in the early hours of Thursday morning, bowing his head in prayer and observing traditional custom by placing a folded piece of paper into the crevice of the wall. Orthodox men interrupted their morning prayers to catch a glimpse of the Illinois senator, reaching out to shake his hand as he passed them by. But not all were taken by the Democrat. One yelled out: “Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale!” before Mr Obama was whisked away to his waiting plane."

Michelle Obama stumped in FL yesterday and raised a big chunk of change.

Speaking of Florida, Obama's up with a new Spanish language bio radio spot.

With all the problems in the Bush Adminsitration, I will sleep easier at night knowing that no government personel is at Obama's speech.

Every time I think the Bush Adminstration couldn't be any more ridiculous, they prove me wrong.
Let's see, Bush's idiot partisan hacks labeling an event partisan.  Pot, meet kettle.
That is why this is bad. He is running for the POTUS.
he should have rallies here not in Germany. he isnt elected yet dont assume you are President.
Cry about it, GOP.  Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha.
"'We always maintain that no U.S. government Foreign Service person overseas should be seen to be advocating one side or the other,' State Department Undersecretary for Management Patrick Kennedy said, adding that 'it has nothing to do with who' the candidate is."

I think what they mean to say is they shouldn't be seen as advocating a side unless they choose which side it is.  Does anyone out there really think a speech by Uncle Fluffy in, say, Prague would be declared a "partisan political event"?

(Think of the opportunity to outline your plan for defending Czechoslovakia!)

The lady doth protest too much, methinks!

So, Senator Obama can't give a speech in Berlin without it being a "partisan political event" but it's just fine and dandy for Dubya to stump for Uncle Fluffy in the Knesset?

RIGHT.............
Sen. McCain's campaign has tried all sorts of cute, anti-European ideas out -- the bi-lingual "JV press corps" luggage tags, the disparaging remark about being behind the French on building nuclear energy sites, and now the radio addresses in towns with names like "Berlin" and "Paris."  What's the point?  If Sen. McCain were elected, he would presumably not treat these foreign governments sarcastically....And, after all, the European portion of Sen. Obama's trip is only a few days' long -- much of the time was spent (as per McCain's goad) in the Middle East.  Sen. McCain would have been far more productive to use the time to work under the radar and hone his campaign's messages than to make mean-spirited attacks and statements to the press that have backfired.  In addition, Sen. McCain seems to be a person who can't sit still -- yes he has made eight or more trips to Iraq...at taxpayer expense.  Might he himself not argue that so many trips are "pork" and that he could have done more reading and research and spent less precious fuel jetting there over and over again?

This ad got a barely true on the truth-o-meter this morning on 'Joe'.

It was reported that Senator Obama had voted for funding the troops many times, but Bush had jammed items into this particular bill that Barack could not in good conscience vote for.
That's all Obama knows is how to put on major circuses. Ideas? None. Fact finding? Please, Obama is so cocky, he thinks he knows it all. People come to Him to get facts, not the other way around. Change? Obama has been a status quo guy all his life. He hasn't ever changed anything. Politics? Extreme leftwinger with a record of not playing well with others that disagree with him.

So now this contrived event in Germany is termed partisan. What a surprise. That is something Obama knows.
“Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale!” before Mr Obama was whisked away to his waiting plane."

Some people don't know anything but resentment, and contentiousness. There are those on all sides in the Middle East that would not know how to handle peace, because they have been angry all their lives.
. .  because they have been angry all their lives.

Kind of like you, and the rest of the liberals in this country?
GDI, McCain dared Obama to go and he took him up on that dare and it back-fired on McCain.  There is but so much either candidate can do to make real changes in the USA today in their current roles.  Obama is adding to his resume abroad and I applaud his effort.  Congressmen take trips abroad quite often, they just don't get as much press.  Be realistic here in knowing that he is supposed to act Presidential while on this trip...do you expect him to act like a pilot or something else!

He probably can't do anything right for you anyway!

Obama '08...the only choice for me

Donna, that is truly priceless.  Considering all the anger from liberals on this site, I'd say you were right on.

Right said, Donna. Personally (and call me any name you like) I'm getting sick of Isreal getting 51st state status. I wish they would recall their Senator.
So now the Bush Administration cares about The Hatch Act?

From 2007:
"Witnesses have told congressional investigators that the chief of the General Services Administration and a deputy in Karl Rove's political affairs office at the White House joined in a videoconference earlier this year with top GSA political appointees, who discussed ways to help Republican candidates. With GSA Administrator Lurita Alexis Doan and up to 40 regional administrators on hand, J. Scott Jennings, the White House's deputy director of political affairs, gave a PowerPoint presentation on Jan. 26 [2007] of polling data about the 2006 elections. Investigators state that the Hatch Act may have been broken when the question "How can we help our candidates?" was asked by Lurita Doan, according to witnesses at the meeting.

From : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurita_Doan

I guess they only worry about it if it benefits the other side.

Donna, it also got a negative rating on mediacurves.com (I heard it on POTUS on my drive in) even with Republicans.

This campaign is failing on every front.  I don't personally have a problem with him dumping all of this cash before the convention; but seriously - What a Waste.
I have no problem with the decision.

Its a stretch to believe Germans are going to recognize state department personnel and assume a department-wide endorsement, but there's nothing wrong with keeping the lines between campaigning and governance clear - in fact it would be great if it wasn't blurred as much as it is.

Why this was deemed blog-worthy I'm not sure I understand.
If pandering is an event in the Olympics, the gold medal will definitely go to Obama. He's been going the extra mile just to get some photo op with foreign leaders to compensate his lack of experience...what a total phony...the American public can clearly see through all his dog-and-pony show.
Isn't the RNC treading on thin ice with their "lack of support for the troops" by Obama, when McCain voted AGAINST the GI bill????? Go the the web site Viet Nam Vets Against John McCain and see what they have to say about this "hero".
Fee
McCain dared him to go to Iraq and Afghanistan.
He didn’t dare him to campaign to the Germans.. I am an Independent who hasn't decided yet who to vote for but this just doesn’t sit well with me. Kind of like people criticizing the government when they are over seas. Its OK to criticize but not Over there.
Secondly I suppose any "Citizen" could go and make a speech at the Brandenburg gate? That’s the whole point. I think he looked vary good in Afghanistan and Iraq. But I still want my say in who leads this country, and the fact he has done this in another country is what I have a Issue with. It just sits wrong with me.
My GOD is it our government business to dictate to American citizens when they can and can not attend an event?

Barack Obama is a United States Senator – Why can’t Americans oversea go see he if they choose too?

We are Americans - were are not citizens or China or Cuba – our government shouldn’t dictate what we can and can not do.

THE Bush administration should be a shame to degrade and causes disgrace amongst our Democrat way of life.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

"name of your choice":   you got my vote.....
