First thoughts: Obama's election to win

*** Obama’s election to win: How important has this overseas trip been for Obama? Look no further than our latest NBC/WSJ poll, which has Obama leading McCain by six points (47%-41%), unchanged from last month. While the survey finds that the political winds are at the Dem candidate’s back -- just 13% believe the country’s on the right track, an all-time low in the poll; this is the 25th-straight NBC/WSJ survey in which the GOP has a net-negative rating; and Bush’s approval rating is only at 30% -- there are plenty of signs that Obama hasn’t yet closed the deal; if anything, he's simply grabbing on to the reverse Bush coattails at the moment. A majority (55%) think he would be the riskier choice for president, less than half of respondents say he doesn’t share their values and background, and McCain clobbers him on experience and commander-in-chief questions. This election, in fact, has become a referendum on Obama: 51% say they are focusing more on what kind of president Obama would be, versus just 27% who say they are focusing more on McCain. While a common refrain is that this election is shaping up as Obama’s election to lose, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) puts it another way “This remains Barack Obama’s election to win,” he says. “In the end, the election is about reassuring voters and removing doubts.”

VIDEO: The latest NBC/WSJ poll shows that Barack Obama has not yet received any boost in ratings since his trip overseas. A Race for the White House panel discusses.

*** Re-running Hillary’s campaign isn’t the answer: But while Obama is working on some his shortcomings as he travels overseas, ask yourself this: Has McCain been working on his, especially on a week when he’s had the country to himself? A whopping 77% in the poll believe that McCain would follow Bush’s policies very closely or somewhat closely. Just 14% of McCain’s own voters are excited about his candidacy (compared with 44% of Obama voters who say that about the Illinois Democrat). And, by a 55%-40% margin, voters prefer a presidential candidate who will bring greater changes -- even if he’s less experienced and tested -- to an experienced candidate who will bring fewer changes. “McCain can’t make this election about experience,” says NBC/WSJ co-pollster Neil Newhouse (R). “Re-running Hillary’s campaign isn’t going to be enough.” McCain tried to do something different by traveling to a Gulf Coast oil rig to promote his policies on offshore drilling, but those plans got scrapped by Hurricane Dolly. If it wasn't for bad luck these days, McCain would have no luck at all. That said, will observers look back on this summer as a wasted opportunity for McCain to start creating distance with Bush? Appearing with Bush's father this week, after all, wasn't exactly the best way to create that distance.

*** It’s the economy, dumba$$: No longer does the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” suffice. We need more of an expletive to drive home the point how central the economy is to this presidential election. In the poll, the economy and energy/gas prices are the two biggest voter concerns; Iraq is third. Voters are screaming for the candidates to focus on the economy, which is what makes the European portion of Obama's trip potentially more troublesome. It’s not clear that either Obama or McCain owns this issue right now. Just 28% have confidence that Obama would be able to get the economy back on track, while only 17% say that of McCain. (But Democrats do enjoy a comfortable lead when it comes to which party better handles the economy and energy.) Also according to the poll, voters -- overwhelmingly -- want McCain to pick a running mate who’s an expert on the economy. They want Obama to pick an expert in military or foreign affairs, but a close second is an economic expert. Who out there fits those bills for McCain and Obama? Will Michael Bloomberg get second looks from both candidates? Romney and Portman rise to the top of McCain's list? Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina too?  What about Mark Warner on the Dem side? Will Robert Rubin's name suddenly surface?

*** Bigger than David Hasselhoff? Already this morning, Obama visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem, traveled to Germany, and met with Chancellor Angela Merkel. Yet the big event comes around 1:30 pm ET, when Obama delivers his speech in Berlin. The address, of course, has sparked plenty of questions: How big is it going to be? Is it a rally? Why were the Obama folks passing around fliers promoting the event? Earlier this morning, per NBC/NJ's Athena Jones, Obama held an avail on the flight to Berlin and answered some of those questions. On whether he’s nervous about speaking before a million screaming Europeans: “I doubt we are going to have a million screaming Europeans… Let’s tamp down expectations here. If we get tens of thousands.” More on the expectations of the crowd size: “My staff basically just told me that this space is bigger than I realized. It is a potentially bad thing. We are sort of on the high wire all of the sudden. It’s like, 'Wait how many does this accommodate?'” On the substance of the speech: “It is not a wonky policy speech.” And on whether he will speak German, a la JFK: “Probably not. My German is not real good, but I don’t think the Germans would feel a lot of appeal to that.”

*** Touché: The RNC, meanwhile, is up with radio ads hitting Obama for his lack of support for troop funding last year. Where are the ads running? They’re in all three US cities named Berlin in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire, as well as all three US cities named Paris in Maine, Michigan, and Missouri. But we ask: Why no love for Paris, VA? Population 49!

*** Going for the gold: The AP writes, "Barack Obama is going for the gold. He has decided to buy $5 million in national advertising on NBC during the broadcast of the Olympic games. The ads will appear on network and cable channels. The ad purchase was first reported yesterday on the website of Advertising Age, a magazine that covers the industry."

*** Blog fodder: Also, don’t miss this little shot Obama took at Fox News when talking at his avail about the information/news the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are getting. “Sure, they are well informed, especially because you know [Major] Garrett’s on their home channel. How is it that Fox News has such an impact with Armed Forces television?” Garrett, also on the plane, answered: “Choice.” Then Obama replied: “Is that the commander-in-chief’s choice?” Over to you, Mr. O'Reilly!

VIDEO: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray takes a look at McCain's potential V.P. short list and addresses speculation that the Republican may soon announce his pick.

*** Meet Rob Portman: With McCain in Ohio, we take a look at Rob Portman (sorry, Bobby Jindal -- we were going to profile you before McCain canceled his appearance in Louisiana)… His family's ancestors were Quaker abolitionists who were active in the Underground Railroad… That you can put more money in your 401(k) and IRA is, in part, due to Portman… During 2000 and 2004 VP debate practice for Cheney, he played the roles of Lieberman and Edwards… On the one hand, Portman brings experience on the economy as OMB director and a geographic advantage being from Ohio. On the other, his close ties to Bush (pictures hung in his office of him running with Bush Sr. and fishing with Cheney in Snake River, WY.) and his work as US Trade Rep. are problems, particularly in his home state where he never ran for statewide office. He represented Cincinnati in Congress.

*** On the trail: McCain is in the battleground of Ohio, where he raises money and then attends a town hall in the evening with Lance Armstrong; the two hold a media avail after that. Obama, as mentioned above, is in Germany.

It is extremely frustrating to hear disparaging remarks from Chuck Todd and Chris Matthews that Barack is cocky (many posters to FR have decried them for these remarks).  It also was noted many times yesterday here in FR that Andrea Mitchell’s reporting of Barack is very biased.  So my question to the NBC brass is this, what are your News Dept plans after Barack wins the election?  Three of your major players will have been discredited.

This election and the victory of Obama will not only bring change to the practices and principles of politics in Washington, but it will also see sweeping changes in the world of talking heads and pundits.  If you want to issue opinions, state up front these are opinions.  These rants are being sold as analysis, and are far short of honest reporting.  I did not capture the name of the person yesterday who said Tim Russert would be turning over in his grave with the shoddy performances of his NBC colleagues.  I agree.

Repeatedly it has been mentioned that a negative Obama story last for weeks and a McCain gaffe only lasts 2-3 days.  I am trying very hard to be honest with myself when I ask where is this so-called Obama favorable bias in the media?  I think there is a tremendous amount of jealously from talking heads and pundits over Obama’s success.

Why am I ranting about this?  I know my usual friends like Nashville, Pat and others will make similar comments, but what is being glossed over by our supposed experts (except KO) is the most telling aspect of the latest NBC poll, the excitement factor.  If the talking heads and pundits would just relax and absorb the groundswell of excitement for Barack, and accept it for its authenticity, then we would be better off in our new reporting and analysis.

Finally, does anyone else think McCain is losing it; both mentally and emotionally?
why cant anyone realize the fact that McCain can't push ahead of obama in the polls this is also mccains election to lose because obama has had a tough primary, his negative are still up from when it ended mccain should be ahead of obama.  i think we should look at it from that end.

and i love when obama goes after fox news.

Chuck, perhaps it's time to stop calling this election a referendum on Obama.  I get what your point is, but really, that's also an excuse for the press to stop the scrutiny of McCain and his support of the Bush administration.

As for VPs, I say Obama should buck the conventional wisdom and pick a domestic/economy choice.

Tried to post this yesterday...FR, please look into making this site more blogger friendly, despite what Cheeto Joe says.

"McCain's call for change: “What I want to do, is the day that I am elected, not the day I’m inaugurated but the day I’m elected I want to pick up the phone and call the majority leader, who I’ve known for a quarter of a century. I’ve known the speaker of the house. I’ll call both – I’ll say look, I’m going to be in town next week. Let’s sit down together, let’s sit down together and set priorities so that beginning right after the inauguration we’ll hit the ground running..."

Really? Hey, McCheese - if you have that much power, why not do it now?  If you are so friendly with those in congress, you could...oh, wait.  That's right.  You don't actually want to SHOW UP for work.  Nevermind.

Oh, please - Chicago and crime go together like PB&J.  No one person is going to change that.
Come to think of it, NY is the same way.  Tell me, did Rudy eliminate all crime in his city?  Last I heard, people were killing each other there as well.  I have even heard cops kill innocent bystanders there!  Tell me again how magical the GOP is...

Mark,Seattle (Sent Wednesday, July 23, 2008 1:26 PM)

I don't know if I am one of the ones that you want to continue to hear from, but I have been posting on HuffPo and Topix (our local news blog).  I've tried blogging on CNN but they are worse than MSNBC at censoring posts.  Have a great day!
Fox News is the number one news channel, so naturally it is everywhere, even on Armed Forces TV.  IF MSNBC would show the news instead of porn captures and life behind bars, maybe they could challenge them.  But Fox is news, 24 hours a day.  Obama better just get used to it.

Liberalism is working well in San Franscisco these days.  Letting criminals murder in cold blood and the Mayor doesn't even care.  I hope that woman gets at least $100 million and more from the city for letting that guy go and murder her husband and two sons.  And now they want to vote on making prostitution legal.  Yes, San Franscisco is a great place to raise kids, if the Mayor doesn't have them killed or pimped out. What has Nancy Pelosi done about the sex slave trading in her district?  Nothing from what I have been reading about!

If the economy is the number one issue, why is Obama over in Europe?  I think the economy is just a blown up liberalized media issue.  Judging from the thousands of people at the Amusement parks in San Antonio over the weekend and watching one guy eating three $8.00 turkey legs, there is no such thing as a bad economy.  Just more trumped up liberal hogwash.

Of course, that will all change if Obama and his liberal friends have their way about it.  More job losses and more misery for ordinary Americans, but the Liberal congress could care less.

Liberalism is a disease.
You mean to tell me that Obama got all that media coverage, and he only has a six (6) point lead?
WOW! That's very telling.
He didn't get a bounce from all that coverage, and McCain is still within reach of him.
Basically that says people don't trust Obama, don't know him, and want to wait-and-see what happens over the course of this campaign.
It also means that people genrally like John McCain, and want to give him a fair chance, in spite of the media's mean spirited attempts to pitch this election to Obama.
With all the attention Obama has gotten, it's absolutely amazing that he isn't ahead by 15-20 points.
But he isn't, and that says a lot!
Finally, does anyone else think McCain is losing it; both mentally and emotionally? Chuck, NY (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:28 AM)

Bingo Chuck.

As I watch these dreadful ads coming from the McCain camp, I’m reminded of the damage the commentators on Fox Propaganda have caused this country. Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Michelle Malkin, Bill Kristol, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Karl Rove; add into the mix Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck & Michael Savage.

Most of these people are heard all over the country on talk radio all day long. And their message works. Obviously.

And then watch and listen carefully to John McCain. Instead of acting like a 21st century dignified presidential candidate, he is now behaving like one of the right wing commentators mentioned above.

He’s bought into it all - hook, line & sinker. It’s exactly what happened to President Bush. A presidential candidate is supposed to rise above all this nonsense coming from talk radio. All they basically are are a bunch of idiots who have big mouths. They get paid a great deal of money to basically just mouth off.

Why isn’t John McCain able to see them for who they really are?

His ads are disgraceful. His shots at Senator Obama are childish and silly.
______________
Chuck, Yankees/Red Sox - big weekend in the good 'ole summertime.
What's disturbing is the press coverage afforded Obama vs. McCain. You'd hope the media, and maybe there's a thousand or so people that control what is covered, would not have such a profound affect on the election. The all out blitz for nearly 100% coverage of Obama and 0% coverage McCain does have an effect. The media provides this fawning coverage of Obama, and then they act surprise when the poll numbers rise accordingly. Obama, who really doesn't offer much in ideas or anything else for that matter, is just another passenger on the medias coat-tails. The media through will turn on Obama soon enough.
Has Rob Portman taken the Joe Lieberman speed word correction course needed for the job?
All over the map McGoofy shows Jindal may be to young to understand the virtues of history, no matter how distorted it is ...any way Jindal looks to healthy and handsome next to McGoofy...not good...
Hey, First Read --- Don't hassle "the Hoff!"
"How important has this overseas trip been for Obama? Look no further than our latest NBC/WSJ poll, which has Obama leading McCain by six points (47%-41%), unchanged from last month. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Didn't the numbers including ALL the candidates (Bob Barr and Ralph Nader) show Senator Obama with a double digit lead of 13%? Why no mention of that result since these candidates ARE actually going to be on the ballot?

Senator McCain is BEHIND in another poll, but the issue ONCE AGAIN is what Senator Obama needs to do.
Senator McCain can lie, disparage, misrember, and just plain CREATE HIS OWN HISTORY and it is a non story.

Sound fair to you Chuck?
Campaign Diaries has posted its latest Senate rankings, with detailed descriptions of every single seat. Democrats are still in very good shape, with 12 of the top 13 races held by Republicans: http://campaigndiaries.com/senate
If he's "cocky," then I think it's the proper word to use. Beats "uppity."

Of course! US troops are fed a constant diet of FOX SPEWS. What is it with lord Cheney? His advance people have 4 TVs turned on and tuned to FOX when the Dark Master enters?

"Yes," I'm sorry to say that it looks very much like John McCain is losing it. I Do NOT want him in the WH.
Pretty funny that Austins "darling" Lance Armstrong endorsed McCain.  Theres going to be a lot of really unhappy people in Austin which is a "blue" city in this red state.  There was talk here of him running for office, his endorsement might have blown that chance.
Quite a scene at the West Wall with Obama and his little campaign drones. See Barack, people regard that little plot of soil as sacred, and they accept people there that are there to pray, not prey, which is what you were doing by putting politics over religion. The main stream media though doesn't understand religion, so as ususal, you'll get a pass on this major flub.
Raise your had if you REALLY believe that Bobby Jindal ever had a chance of being John McCain's VP? Anybody?

How does this type of "non news" story get so much coverage, when the actual Republican Party nominee gets no ink over not knowing which came first, the Anbar Awakening or the Surge?

How can someone who's been to Iraq so much not know that?

How did CBS news conveniently "misedit" that answer?

What a coincidence! (lol)

Why is hJohn McCain getting a free pass on that?

Why is the White House getting a free pass on distributing the "Maliki mistranslation" propoganda?

Anybody know?
I have been following Senator Obama since the 2004 democratic convention.  This time last year we were in the democratic debates and I was pulling for him then and felt that he was the best choice.  I firmly believe that he has matured and is getting better and better in campaigning and presenting himself.
I absolutley will be voting for Senator Obama for all the right reasons, but now I am convinced that not only is Senator obama the right man for the job of president, I am convinced that Mccain is the wrong man and a dangerous choice for any American to make.
Why are other American's here so . . . I don't know . . . so selfish??

I am a proud American.

I am actually GLAD that for the first time in I don't know 8 YEARS the world actually is in tuned with and cares about what goes on here.  What is wrong with you guys on here?  He wouldn't have to do that if you guys would take your heads out of your ____ and accept that the guy IS an American and demand that our media stop attributing this "other" and "exotic" qualities to him!
Unbelievable!
What can Obama do right now to fix the prices at the pumps?  Who has that power?  "Oh Americans are hurting here . . .!"

BS ya'll!

Don't you see that this man is trying to repair the damage that Bush and by his approval McCain have done to our world image.  We seem to think that we exist in a bubble that everything is beholding to us!  Newsflash:  There are actually investors out there from foreign countries that actually took A LOSS on their investments here because of how the Bush/Cheney juggernaut has run this country.  They DELIBERATELY cashed out and terminated any interest they had here AT A LOSS . . . and it cost Joe at the corner HIS JOB!!  So stop hating and let the man do what McCain and frankly very few are equipped to do: be a true ambassador of goodwill to the rest of the world!  He Cannot make changes until he becomes president . . . but he can do a lot of good using  his popularity overseas to improve America's image!  WHY IS THAT A BAD THING PEOPLE!!!???

Wow!  We are bunch of selfish, xenophobic people!

The world does not does not revolve around us!  Newsflash:  We actually need to be liked by the most of the world in order to be really safe.  How can we call people our allies like we do Britain and France when the people there despise GW?

Obama is saying: Look, there is still unlimited good in America, the people of this country are some of the warmest in the world!  We have as a country a lot more to offer the world . . . towards the common good."

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT MESSAGE??!!

Oh and First Read tell Andrea Mitchell to chill out!

Hey Chuck from Response #1: You are 100% right
Chuck NY

I AGREE 100% ! I could not have put it better myself !

Chuck Todd
"The election will be a referendum on Obama." Really ?
What about 8 years of George Bush? Dick Cheney? Don Rumsfeld?

I'm confused.

Morning Joe is still unwatchable !

Andrea Mitchell .. I hope you got over being snubbed for the Obama interview. No more bitterness please !
I don't get it! Urgh! Watching Morning Joe just infuriates me. Why does Joe Scarborough think he's more knowledgeable about the situation in Iraq then Wesley Clark? He pretty much said this morning that everyone who didn't take his view on how the "surge" was so successful in Iraq is an idiot. Really Joe? He is SO condescending! I really can't believe Mika sits there and talks his crap every morning. She's so weak! I agree with someone who said yesterday that they need someone like Rachel Maddow in there who would go toe to toe with Joe and his bull****! It's like watching a train wreck. I want to turn it off because he makes me so mad but I need to see the garbage he's spewing next. Urgh!!!
McCain is holding on to his reputation as a national security and foreign policy expert only because the media is protecting him from his own words, which if highlighted would certainly undercut that view.

Why the media is doing this is an interesting question. Is it because they can't deal with pieces of information that don't conform to their pre-conceived notions? Is it because a close race is in their business interests?
Getting away from polls and B.O's overseas trip. It is Obama's election to win because of McCain's silly acclaim to color him embraceable and stupid correspondence - lol
It is extremely frustrating to hear disparaging remarks from Chuck Todd and Chris Matthews that Barack is cocky
------------------------------------------------------
Did it ever occur to you that that's their honest take on things?  You don't have a problem when these folks disparage McCain.  So why is it a problem when they honestly report their take on Obama?  And please, don't refer to Olbermann as a 'supposed expert'; he's utterly incapable of reporting things fairly.  You might agree with him as I suspect most posters on here do, but there's no way a candidate is 100% perfect all of the time as he touts Obama as being, and there's no way a candidate is 100% wrong all of the time the way he portrays McCain.
"Didn't the numbers including ALL the candidates (Bob Barr and Ralph Nader) show Senator Obama with a double digit lead of 13%? Why no mention of that result since these candidates ARE actually going to be on the ballot?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Because they want it to be close. They want a horse-race. A 13 point blowout gives them nothing to yap about. Not to mention the fact that it's foolish to expect his overseas visit to be reflected in the polls at this point. After his speech in Berlin, after he meets with England's leaders, and after he give his press-conference upon returning state-side - then you'll start to see the effect of his trip on the polls. Chuck should know by now that the polls are always a few days behind in how they reflect reaction to current events.
"It’s the economy, dumba$$: No longer does the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” suffice. We need more of an expletive to drive home the point how central the economy is to this presidential election."

------
Where can I get that printed on a T-shirt?  Hope they're reading this over at Obama Campaign HQ...better start making the signs so there's plenty enough to go around in Denver.  This pretty much sums it all up!
I would like to support Chuck, NY comments that it is time to stop calling the next POTUS "Cocky" It does not serve you well.  Andrea Mitchell called him "Cocky" and it really looks unprofessional. No other news outlet it using that word. Confident works.
While I'm at it, Huffington Post commented that David Gregory is a "lame duck". Now, in my humble opinion he does not have the horsepower of Chuck Todd, but he basically works hard and does rather well. Some unsolicited advise, Dump Joe and Pat (as you have with Tucker), put in David in the AM, and consider Rachel for the 6:00 spot.  Now I will stop being so presumptive. I assume MSNBC will be covering Barack speech today?
What a dweeb Obama is. Fox news has it ratings because they are fair and balanced. Fox targets main stream America. msnbc on the other hand is 100% radical left wing. Results, 5-1 advantage for Fox in the ratings. But Obama agrees with everything nbc says. No surprise there. Ever watch O'Reilly?  He blasts as many Republicans as he does Democrats. O'Reilly devotes maybe half his show to politics, with the other half going to non-political stories. Olbermann and Matthews are 100% political, and 100% bash the conservatives. Boring.
But Fox is news, 24 hours a day.  Obama better just get used to it.

jerry/corpus christi texas

You're kidding me right? News, 24 hours a day? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Chuck Todd ... your results on countdown last night from the poll dont add up ... two of your results on screen totalled 105% with a MOE of 3.1%.

One was Obama 60% and McCain 45%, MOE 3.1%
The other was McCain 58% and Obama 47% with a MOE 3.1%

Am I missing something here? If not, its hard to take your poll seriously.
does anyone know if chuckie T's wife works for McCains' campaign?  I thought that I heard or read this somewhere.  If that's true, it explains ALOT about what gets written and reported here at FR.
See the story where Democratic convention leaders in Denver were filling up at the cities pumps? They did pay for the gas, but the local government pumps don't charge tax on the gas, about a 0.40/gal savings. Nice. So the Democrats get gas tax holiday, but the rest of us common folks need to pay the tax.

The Democrats tried their old standby story of "The Republicans do it too!". But a quick check in Minniapolis showed the Republicans are paying the tax.

Democrats are the biggest hypocrits.
"McCain is in the battleground of Ohio, where he raises money and then attends a town hall in the evening with Lance Armstrong..."

Are they going to "hang"?
Great post Chuck, NY!

*wipes Sunchip crumbs on pants*

So I try not to watch Morning Joke as much as possible, I really do. But I slipped up this morning and saw it - and yes it was just as bad as I remembered - with the exception that Harold Ford wasn't there (YAY!). Anywho, just a short point.

Barack Obama does not need to "admit he was wrong" about "the surge" (as Joe and the Joe-ettes were claiming this morning), because he was not wrong. We never should have invaded Iraq. If we were going to invade Iraq, we should have went in with OVERWHELMING force, not overwhelming rhetoric.

No amount of repeating of THIS LIE by the media is going to change the facts!

America is a representative democracy (allegedly). Barack Obama is there to represent the people of his district - who want out of Iraq.

The MAJORITY of the American people want OUT of Iraq. The American people have VOTED to get out of Iraq. The Bush Adminsitration, with the support of John McCain said "SO."

When General Shinseki said we needed a larger invasion force, Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush said "SO".

When Barack Obama said we have taken our ball of Al Quaeda in Afghanistan by putting so much emphasis on Iraq, George Bush and John McCain said "SO."

When John McCain said the surge LED to the Anbar Awakening (which is NOT TRUE), the media said "SO."

WE THE PEOPLE are DEMANDING to be heard - you cannot change the subject. You cannot change the facts. You cannot rewrite history.

Senator Obama was and is VINDICATED.

The media, George Bush, and John McCain are GUILTY AS CHARGED.
Joe Scarborough is "da** disgrace"!!! I can't believe NBC/MSNBC allows him to have a show. God, he's worst that Tucker!! He doesn't read to be informed and is rude besides. Then he gets mad when "his audience" complains. He is so "envious" of Barak Obama that he can't stand himself. Dude go back to school;learn how to be "articulate" and get a "jumpshot".
As for Angela Mitchell, I counted 8 complaints about her on FR yesterday. She is a McCain supporter. She is both jealous of Obama and the fact that she is not being given the exclusives on Obama.
I THINK IT IS SAD THAT SO MANY AMERICAN WHITE PEOPLE ARE SO INSECURE WITH THE NOTION THAT A BLACK MAN MIGHT POSSIBLY BE MORE EDUCATED, MORE ARTICULATE AND HAVE A BETTER SENSE OF WORLD ISSUES THAN A WHITE MAN WHO WAS A POW.

HERE'S A CLUE...THERE ARE SOME VERY EDUCATED, POWERFUL BLACK PEOPLE WHO RUN CORPORATIONS, RAISE HAPPY AND RESPONSIBLY FAMILIES, AND CAN ARTICULATE THOUGHT OUTSIDE OF THE BELOW 80 IQ GROUP.

THIS IS A TIME IN OUR HISTORY THAT YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF. THE COUNTRY HAS COME A LONG WAY. IGNORANCE AND LOW-INFORMATION VOTERS HAVE HAD THEIR 7 PLUS YEARS OF THEIR CHOICE, WITH BUSH.

MAYBE IT IS TIME TO ALLOW MORE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE TO HELP SHAKE THE FUTURE IN THIS COUNTRY.

TAKE ON CHANCE ON INTELLIGENCE...IT MAY MAKE YOU WANT TO BE A BETTER PERSON.
Jerry in Corpus, do you still have a roof?  How is it down there?
First of all to you mentally challenged people crying about the media coverage difference  between the candidates . I say this. Be glad because McCain does not have a clue on reality and has been caught in more outright lies than you can shake a stick at.Then people cry about the love affair over Obama , yeah I bet he felt love over 3 weeks of continued coverage of Rev. Wright and weeks apon end of the Bitter statement. Yeah the media is trully in his favor there. It is so funny how McCain doesn't get scrutinized like Obama. I do admit that yes Obama has recieved a lot more interest this week. That is the fault of McCain if he had not made the challenge it might not have drawn this much attention. Now for a little bit of sad truth . Imagine if you will I am trying not to but have a warped sense of humor. John McCain as a life guard on Baywatch or Barrack Obama as a lifeguard on Baywatch. Which show do you think would have the better ratings ? Ratings sell so sorry Charlie only good tasting tuna gets to be StarKist.
Jerry... conservatism is global plague.
Recession? Nope. Gas prices? Coming down. Iraq? In final clean up mode. And Obama is going to do what again?
McCAINT has pissed away all of his advantage. He had the stage after he tied up his party's nominee and instead of making a great Presidential debut, he confused (and confused and confused) Sunni/Shia/Al Queda until he began looking like LIEberman's ventriliquists' dummy...now, instead of taking advantage of having America to himself to spread his message, he has instead spred his crap disparaging Obama at every turn....if there is doubt about a candidates stand on issues, it has to McAINT's cause he hasn't said one clarifying statement yet on his fix for this country.
"Fox News is the number one news channel, so naturally it is everywhere, even on Armed Forces TV. "

#1?  On what planet?  Maybe it's #1 in Texas, but I don't think that it is everywhere, Jer.

If liberalism is not a "disease" - it's the cure to the scurge that is neoconservatism.
"Liberalism is a disease."

So is Jerry.
Everyday as this historic election continues, my opinion of our media has diminished.  I first attributed my disdain for the media (AKA "The Beast") to a blatant dishonesty, cowardice, and partisanship.  Now I'm truly noticing a pattern of incompetence.  When REAL experts on a subject appear on a subject (such as Dr. Brzezinski and to a much smaller extent, Gen. Clark) it has been shown that the punditocracy really knows nothing.  I went back last night and watched those two experts on Morning Joe and it was apparent that Joe (much like most of our lazy media) only was armed with flimsy talking points while these two interviewees had a deeper, more sophisticated knowledge of the subjects.  I can place a safe bet that most of our media talking heads have known nothing of the complexities of Saudia Arabian involvement with the Sunni tribes and what the "Awakening" really was.  The only pluses from this foolish "the surge was right" storyline is that more regular people are at least seeing the nuance and other contributing factors of our current situation in the Middle East and that Sen. McCain only has a very simplistic view of foreign policy.

The CW this election cycle has been wrong so often because the fact is that our press doesn't do any individual research.  I now believe that many in our press don't understand the Constitution and the powers granted to the President.  They take offense when Sen. Obama (and some of his surrogates) bring it to their attention that Gen. Petraeus does not outrank the President and call him 'cocky'.  Sen. McCain is believed to have experience because he tells good war stories and has white hair.  Listen carefully to the Senator from Arizona when he speaks about issues such as Iranian relations, Afghanistan, or Israel-Palestinian conflict.  Everything is barbaric and simplified to a point where he says, "Them bad, us good, we must fight!"  Sounds just like Bush and his "Axis of Evil".  McCain can't give a sophisticated explanation of these matters because the truth is that he doesn't know, he's only just spent a lot of time in Washington instead of actual learning.  McCain only has foreign policy gravitas because the media says so.  If the media knew anything about foreign policy then they would see that (McCain) the emperor has no clothes.

That Hasselhoff reference is an insult to us Germans.
Finally, does anyone else think McCain is losing it; both mentally and emotionally?

In a word...yes.   Its scary to think that in his first term, McCain would be 73. He would be scratching 80 at the end of his last term.  Sorry, but I don't think anyone that age is capable of handling the stress of being president.  Just compare Clinton and Bush, both relatively young in their first term, to what they looked like at the end of their last terms...they aged 20 years in only 8!  What will happen to McCain?  He'll be a walking dementia stricken corpse.  How can anyone with half a brain [which is being generous to republicans] claim he's presidential material is beyond me!
Chuck Todd while I understand your conclusions and I agree with them for the most part, I think the dynamics of the race are changing in regards to McCain. Seeing McCain's campaign essentially implode over the past two weeks gave me insight into real problems the candidate may have. In fact I'm beginning to wonder is he really as qualified to be POTUS...has his candidacy an act at this point? He has proposed scant policy, spend 90% of his time slamming Obama, and instead of seperating...has further embraced Bush. Is he indifferent, does he not have fresh ideas, is he essentially "too old" to care about getting this country off of it's wrong track. These seeds have began to plant themselves in my mind and I think voters may began to re-evaluate McCain as well. After seeing Obama move across the world and meet with leaders with ease..it's obvious he is capable of getting them on his side; earning their admiration and respect. Could McCain even muster that much support abroad? Are these "gaffes" showing a real lack of knowledge on McCain's part? These are real questions I would like the media to begin asking. No more covering up and kid-gloves for McCain.

Please consider this Chuck, Murray.
The poll is still a lagging indicator.  It was finished on Monday, and most of it was conducted while the debate was going on as to whether or not Maliki supported a withdrawal timetable similar to Obama or not, which wasn't resolved until Monday.  I'd wait until a poll conducted completely after his return to the US, and one specifically looking for a shift in the "commander-in-chief" question, to make judgments on the impact of the trip.

As to the overall number, I'd wait a week or so after that.  My guess is Obama wants to use this trip to put the foreign policy question to rest, then pivot on returning home squarely to the economy, which will be the focus from tonight until the convention.  That's the isue people care most about right now, and Obama hasn't touched it since he's been overseas. Shoring up his qualifications as CC are the priority right now, then a one-two economic puch next week is when people inclined to vote D but withholding judgment will come around.
Old Lady for Obama -- Chuck's wife is a Democratic strategist, who most recently worked for Jim Webb's campaign. Thanks for posting.
The lastest polling numbers could be frustrating but I think everyone knows why Sen. Obama is struggling to "close the deal." There are still deep prejudices toward Obama despite the fact that he has opened up his life to us far more than any other candidate has ever done.

He has demonstrated none of the things that many people prefer to fear about him. He is a Christian but McCain could be a Warlock and nobody would seem to mind. Obama has experience outside of the Beltway, but Sen. McCain is preferred because he's been a Washington insider for 40 years and with precious little to show for it, I might add. Sen. Obama has articulated his opposition to the war in Iraq when it was political suicide to do so. John McCain is Mr. War personified, dredging up his POW status at every opportunity. This gives him no better qualifications to lead our country or to win a war that has long been lost already.

If McCain's pitiful campaign is any indication of his skill to be President, then Heaven help us because he won't remember where Pennsylvania Ave is come the fall.

So, this is Obama's election to win? I'm grateful for that because he has stepped up to every challenge and surpassed every expectation. He has been on the world's stage this week and has proven what a great President and leader he would be despite McCain throwing tomatoes at him every single day.

GOD BLESS PRESIDENT OBAMA AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
