Obama disappointed in McCain language

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:07 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
Below are some excerpts of Brian Williams' interview with Obama from Berlin, which will air later tonight on NBC Nightly News:

VIDEO: Watch portions of NBC's Brian Williams as he interviews Sen. Barack Obama in Germany. Obama talks about being pegged as the "riskier" choice for president and the need for international cooperation against terrorism.

Williams: I have to begin by getting your reaction to a piece in this morning's International Herald Tribune. It's by Elizabeth Bumiller. And it reads, "Senator John McCain and his campaign have sharply stepped up criticism of Senator Barack Obama as a craven and naïve traveler to the Middle East, who, as McCain put it at a raucous town hall style meeting, quote, 'would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign.'"  That's -- that's tough language.

Obama: Yeah, I-- I was disappointed by that language. You know, John McCain and I disagree on policy. You know, we disagreed on going into the war in Iraq. We disagreed, until recently, about the need to get more troops into Afghanistan. But I've never questioned-- that he wants to make America safer. And for him to suggest that I don't-- for him to suggest that somehow -- I'm less concerned about the safety of my wife and daughter-- than he is I think -- was -- was unfortunate.

Williams: Forty-five minutes in Ramallah. No electoral votes in Berlin.  Is the trip worth it?

Obama: It is because I have firmly believed -- since the beginning of this campaign and -- for the last several years that we can't solve the problems we face in the United States alone. We can't solve the problems of terrorism without support from the international community. We can -- go after al-Qaeda as we have and we must. We can hunt them down. But we are gonna be more effective if we've got an international coalition. If we wanna pressure Iran -- something that has to be at the highest priority to back down from nuclear weapons -- then we've gotta impose very tough sanctions.

Williams: NBC News poll we released just last night, 55 to 35, you against Senator John McCain. American respondents are telling us they view you as the riskier choice for President. Do you understand that?  To what do you attribute that?

Obama: Well, I do understand it. I'm new to the scene. John McCain's been around 25, 30 years in public life. I have -- just recently emerged in terms of our national politics.  And so it's not surprising that people would say that -- the guy we're more familiar with -- is the less riskier choice. That doesn't answer the broader question, though, which is what do Americans think we need right now?

And can we afford to have -- four more years or eight more years of the same types of policies that we've had for the past eight? And in some ways, I guess that would be safe.  It's the devil you know versus the devil you don't. But -- but I think the American people understand that we're in a -- a -- a time of profound challenge and that we've got to make some significant changes -- in how our economy works, in how our tax policy is structured, in our energy policy and our foreign policy if we're gonna meet those challenges.

Invoking his wife and two daughters is pretty strong imagery, and effectively puts the smack down on McCain.

For those politicians who always want to hide behind and defer to General Patraeus, America must always remain a democracy and never a military dictatorship.
Spoken like a true Politician.

Not whining,

Didn't request press,

Nothing to Lose with Amereicans in mind.

He has my vote along with many others in the Arms Services

McCain is actually sounding like an attack dog for someone else.  Very unfortunate.

I just hope McCain does not explode during the debates.
To tel, you the truth, I reaaly can't stand the McCain Campaign anymore. For him to say that Obama is willing to lose the war in order to win the election is very derogotory and as far as I am concerned very foolish!
Senator Barack Obama is ready to lead. I am grateful that he and and his wife Michelle decided to put their family through the rigors of a national campaign.

His canidacy has already changed America for the better.

For all the talk about "the surge working", the truth is that we would be in Iraq forever if not for Senator Obama's steadfastly standing up for the American people's desire to leave Iraq.

I have never been prouder of a politician.

Obama/Biden '08/'12
very smart answer on Mccain.....now, John...my friend...can you possibly respond without using the word "surge"?...yea, didn't think so....McCain, yet again, getting caught overplaying his hand...
It's about time there was an official response from the Obama campaign regarding the McCain comment.  The man who pledged to run a respectful campaign has, in the space of 2 days, called a US Senator and the presumptive democratic nominee for President a traitor, guilty of sedition because of his position on Iraq.  A position reflective of the democratically elected government of that country.  The Mccain campaign has also suggested that Obama would have allowed genocide in Iraq if we left.

Obama's said he was "disappointed" in the comments. That is a galactically kind understatemnet.

I think both comments were reprehensible and unconscienable.  There has been no retraction or diclaimer from McCain.  You certianly would not expect an apology from a man who wouls sink this low.

mccants tactics in this campaign or deplorable.
Poor John McCain, he is sounding so out of touch that the GOP must be worried that their guy is imploding in front of their eyes.  Romney must be tickled pink.

I thought his campaign was the "Straight Talk Express" and he would run a clean campaign.  I guess we were all fools for believing that.
Barrack is a very smart man versus McCain a blast from the past that thinks handing out shiny new nickels is progress. I notice Barrack didn't attack McCain on a personal level.
Obama may be disappointed in McCains language, but the truth does hurt.
I see Obama is stuttering again. He must not have had a teleprompter.
I am really sick of hearing about the whinning from Mccain AND the press about the coverage Senator Obama is getting.  Senator Obama has spent his money on doing things that interest the people and people want to see.
The Mccain/RNC has more money and all they want to spend it on is negative ads.  That is their choice!   Stop your whinning and do something about it.
Mccain is going to regret alot of things he is saying.
I will say this right now as a white female that I don not regret:

The only, and I mean 'only' reason that Mccain is anywhere near Senator Obama in polling is that he is white.  It is purely a racial matter.  If Senator Obama where a white man with the campaign he is running now, mccain would be polling at 25-30 just like Bush.

Gregory Peek that was a great comment you did earlier this morning on one of the 9:30 pieces. Bravo . I was infor the laffs this morning but took note to such fine work as well.
I think if Obama manages to stay above the fray like this, eventually McCain will just look like an angry, old man...which may not be that far from the truth...

McCain is doing himself a real disservice by attcking in this way... it really is "disappointing"
McCain has got Obama rattled.
McCain can't hold a cnadle to this man. He is an intelligent, articulate man that looks at the "big picture" no matter what he's talking about. I'm so glad he came about in my lifetime. I haven't been this excited about voting "for" someone in a very long time! Obama '08
If McCain has been a Senator for 26 years, then it seems to me that makes part of the problem in Washington.
Here are some interesting quotes from Einstein:

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."

"Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds."

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

"The release of atom power has changed everything except our way of thinking...the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker."

"Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence."

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."

I don't say this to be mean, but really believe McCain is in serious trouble, mentally.  He's confused, and irrational.

Also, national security and foreign relations is supposed to be his best area of expertice.  If he is elected, God help us all.  We are witnessing him self-destruct.

I think he needs a competency hearing rather than an inauguration.
Likeability, that's what's going to win this thing.
American's vote for the face they want in their living room, some more strongly than others, but it is a common requirement.
Someone who can take a joke and laugh goes a long way towards winning over us in a very personal way. Bush is a terrible president and proved it in his first term, had he not been so relateable he would not have seen a second.
In order for Barak to win this thing he has got to find a way to show he can laugh at himself.
Mccain is already past that point, he is personable and his age makes that easier for him.
I do want a wise and intelligent president like Barak, but he has to laugh at himself in order to connect with us all.
If there are two people who need your help changing a tire lets say, and you can only help one....
Well, just say there will be hesitation in the polling booth without that that personable touch from Barak...
If your vote is the one that puts that guy over the top - the effort of picking a winner is a very personal decision (as they both need your help to do it).

From HuffPost:

'... McCain Campaign Running Obama-Castro Ad

The McCain campaign has a new web ad out placing Barack Obama, for the second time, side-by-side with a foreign dictator. This time, it's Fidel Castro.

A Democrat in south Florida alerted the Huffington Post to the image, which shows Obama and Castro, profiled side-by-side, above a quote from the Cuban leader praising the Illinois Democrat as "the most advanced candidate."

Picture association is a time-honored tool in political campaigns (think: former Georgia Sen. Max Cleland having his mug pasted beside Osama Bin Laden's during the 2002 congressional elections). And indeed, this is not the first time that the presumptive Republican nominee has used the tactic. Early in June, McCain's campaign launched a web ad placing Obama beside Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad underneath the caption: "Is it OK to unconditionally meet with anti-American foreign leaders?",,,'

That John McCain
All Integrity, all the time ....

What kind of scum bag runs an ad like this ?

John McCain, More of the same

John McCain, Bush’s 3rd term

John McCain, there’s No Fool like an Old Fool

Is there a point to putting in the stutter or hesitations? Why isn't the quetioning about the substance of his poilcies, does he have any. Why bang away on polling that will change in a couple of days anyway. I want to know how he plans to include the Germans, French , Emglish, Palistinians and Isrealites, etc.
McCrazy is looking rather desperate and talk about flip flops. Wasn't this the maverick who was going to run a campain on the facts and policy rather than muckrakeing and mudslinging? Is this angry, desperate man the kind of person( McAngry) we want in the white house? Who are they polling to get these crazy scewed ideas? Didn't you guys learn any lessons from the hard faught primaries. Where is the journalisim? This is the wromg channel for DRAMA isn't it.
I so, long for the days when news anchors were able to ask intelegent well thaught out questions that evoke a candidates real ideas and plans, not sofball questions about, can you say something as hateful as your apponent.
I think McCain is right...after all, he was a war hero, and has more experience in war and protecting us.  God Bless John McCain!
What does his wife's and daughter's safety have to do with Iraq?  He's said many times it was an unnecessary war.  So what "safety" issue is he refering to?  Yet another contradiction/inconsistancy in his retoric.
Thoughtful responses. Clearly expressed ideas. Lack of personal attacks against his opponent.  Understanding insight to polls, rather than exposing their intrinsic bias. Exhibiting maximum graciousness on minimum rest. What's not to love?
'...veteran journalist Joe Klein to wonder whether McCain “has the right temperament for the presidency.”...'

Apparently, in high school McCain was known as 'McNasty' because of his caustic personality

McCain has gotten into repeated physical fights with fellow members of the Senate.
He apparently roughed up an aged Strom Thurmond

Some temperment !!

John McCain, Endless War

John 'I'll get back to you on that' McCain

I think John McCain is way over his head in taking on Obama. Obama is far more articulate, persuasive, forward thinking and analytical then John McCain. As far as I can tell the only two messages John McCain has are:

1) Obama is BAD
2) Surge is GOOD.

I can't see how that degree of shallowness will win John McCain anything in November.
I guess whatever hopes we had that McCain was a different kind of Republican are gone. Opponent doesn't agree with you? Question his loyalty to the nation.

Its sad to see this guy so far below the stature he once held.
Senator McCain not only called Senator Obama's patriotism in to question, he publicly called him a traitor.

This morning on 'Joe', Mike Murphy, (the campaign strategist on the outside of team McCain looking in  becuase of the long standing feud between him, and Black), said that Barack is growing in hubris. He called the Obama campaign shameless.

Well, what I see as proof that the depraved attacks on Barack's character are unfounded, is the fact that he has not used McCain's, nor Hillary's scandals to gain an advantage.

These kinds of signs are only for the wise.
Actually, MI Chick, Don Imus still does the best interviews in the business.  The problem with David Gregory is that he is BORING!  Rachel Maddow is the best choice to host that 6 AM show.

As to RFD being corny?  Yeah, I guess.  I don't watch Imus for the channel it is on.  Though if you have horses like I do, it is valuable.
The most refreshing thing about this interview is that Obama is honest about his disadvantages. I think that makes him an effective pol because he doesn't pretend or delude himself unlike McCain. I wish he'd give more press interviews because you really learn alot by listening to him.
Obama may be disappointed in McCains language, but the truth does hurt.
Frankie Wheeler (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:26 AM)

..................................................

...and you believe that Obama is guilty od treason because he wanted to withdrwaw troops from Iraq.  The  goverment of Iraq has asked us to do just that.  Are they traitors to their own country?  Additionally, Obama has consistently said, though rarely reported, that when we left he would leave torops nearby in case of sectarin violence to end it quickly.

As for the genocide comment, when Clinton was President he ended the genocide in Bosnia by Serbs.  Where has the Bush administration been in stopping the genocide in the Congo, Rwanda and Darfur.  Who is stopping the killing there?  Where and when has McCain even addressed these issues? That comment made by the McCain campain was the most obscene and unconscienable comment I've ever heard a Presidential candidadte make.
Well..you can't teach an old attack dog new tricks.
I think McCain was 100% correct in his statement ! I also think the American public will see the so called "anger" in McCain and realize how passionate this man is saving the American economy, ending the war and defending us and our troops abroad. His experssions toward obama = the absurdness of obama. Who I feel will show his TRUE colors now that his publicity stunt / photo op is winding down.
Even more damning than the statements made by Senator McCain about Senator Obama was the Cheshire cat" smile that followed his statement.  I found that smile much more disturbing in my thoughts of his potential suitability for President of the United States.
McCain is taking pages from the Hillary's playbook, PUMA, angry political groups, and haters on this post who say...  Hillary is now reaching out to them, asking them what issues matter the most to each of them:
http://www.hillpac.com/action/issues/?sc=2498&utm_source=2498&utm_medium=e
Whether it's the need to engage the rest of the world, or John McCain's hateful and juvenile attacks, Barack Obama gets it.
McCain has really disappointed me.  He was my favorite in 2000.  I thought GWB was a complete tool (boy was I right).  I used to think he was a man of principle, honesty and integrity. He's either changed or I just didn't pay attention enough.

I had said during the primary that I'd have voted McCain if Clinton had won over Obama, as McCain was my 2nd choice.  Being a Republican my entire life till 2006ish, I had a visceral hatred of the Clintons (still distrust them) and still believe in some of the fiscal conservative platforms (I'm a social liberal though).

But after watching McCain the last month... I'd now be voting for Hillary Clinton if she had been the nominee against McCain.  I still don't "like" her, or even trust her.  But there is no way I can support McCain... ever.
Obama must understand in politics there is no such thing as a clean campaign. Bush was elected twice.

Give credit where credit is due remain above the fray and what you seek will come in twofolds.

Let the McCain machine and surrogate talk and confuse the issues. Let the news commentators spin it as they wish. This election cycle the people know best and all is not racist or naive.

Senator Obama you will get our vote.

Thanks and keep a clean campaign.

We don't need the Texas 2 Step again.

A different election with a different purpose
Lets make sure the poorly educated and easily conned understand what mcsenile is pulling here...he has nothing to offer but fear itself.

Mccain may be more experienced but his policies to date show an utter lack of understanding or empathy for what is going on with those of use not married to rich spouses.
How long before McCain accuses Obama of being a witch?
If a person is willing to go the extra mile to get a photo op with world leaders just to bolster his image (due to lack of experience) and win the November election, then John McCain has a VALID point... I agree the Iraq war is ill-conceived but the gains we are attaining for a proper withdrawal and setting the terror-war in the proper direction will be jeopardized by Obama's ego.  In a nutshell, it's all about Barack, not the American people.
Hey Ralphie, it is not stuttering. It is called thinking before you speak..something McCain can't do. Bomb..Bomb..Bomb..Iran.
I really appreciate the tone and tenor of Senator Obama's response to Senator McCain's accusation.
I'd only have changed the last sentence (and this would absolutely blow up McCain with respect to the evangelicals).
Obama said "It's the devil you know versus the devil you don't."
I would change that, and have said this to many a friend who couldn't leave that man/woman that was mean, abusive, aloof, etc. for someone who seemed to genuinely care and that is
Let go of the known devil and have faith in God of the blessings he has in store for you.
I share Obama's view regarding the abusive language that Sen. McCain has been using in last several days.

It is shameful that sen. mcCain will allow himself to be pull to this level by the far right racists like Rush and hannity. Like Harold Ford said yestarday, Sen. McCain owns not only Obam but all Americans an apology.
Does anyone in the news remember that there was some ethnic cleansing going on before the durge ( oops, surge), and it was just about over by the time the surge started. Remember all the thousands of dead bodys in the streets of Iraq. All the people that were fleeing their neighborhoods and often the country. McDoozy keeps the "surge worked" mantra going night and day, but none of you folks in the press actually confont him on the exact reasons the so called surge drew down violence or the fact that some very important political bechmarks have not been met. The violence was already dropping by the time the surge started and the Sunni's were already working on starting their offensive against Al Quaida before the surge started. So you question Barak like crazy about this one point of, does he think the surge is a succes,( what five times from Katie) but nobody in the press is confronting John McForgetful about the actual facts of what happened before , during and since the surge has started. Why does he get this free ride all the time? Is it because everybody is in Europe?
Obama does not stutter. He is a reflective listener and responds without canned soundbytes such as "surge." This is basic linguistics 101. If a person speaks like they are reading an answer, then they are not engaging in active dialog. Many politicos are masters of this deceptive form of dialog. Obama is only a master of his thoughtful consideration for any question asked.
Republicans would love to have a young, strong, intelligent, well spoken, patriotic, and moral presidential candidate like Obama....
