Obama's missing 'thesis'

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 1:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

NBC Senior Investigative Producer Jim Popkin looks at "Obama and the case of the missing 'thesis'" in an item on NBC blog Deep Background.

Conservative provocateurs have been hunting for it. Investigative journalists have been on the prowl, too. Even a former professor has been searching through old boxes for his copy of it. But today Barack Obama made it official: He doesn’t have and can’t release any copies of the thesis-length paper he wrote 25 years ago while a senior at Columbia University.

“We do not have a copy of the course paper you requested and neither does Columbia University,” Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt told NBC News.

The hunt for Obama’s senior “thesis” began with a throwaway line in a newspaper article last October. The New York Times story, on Obama’s early New York years, mentioned in passing that the presidential contender had majored in political science at Columbia and had spent his time “writing his thesis on Soviet nuclear disarmament.”

Journalists began hounding Columbia University for copies of the musty document. Conservative bloggers began wondering if the young Obama had written a no-nukes screed that he might come to regret. And David Bossie, the former congressional investigator and “right-wing hit man,” as one newspaper described him, took out classified newspaper ads in Columbia University’s newspaper and the Chicago Tribune in March searching for the term paper.

So what does the missing paper say, and could it be politically damaging to Obama? The Obama campaign won’t offer any guidance since it says it doesn’t have a copy. Spokesman Ben LaBolt wouldn’t even say whether Sen. Obama threw out his copy or lost it.

So we turned for answers to the former professor who graded the now-elusive paper. His former professor, Michael Baron, recalled in an interview with NBC News that Obama easily aced the year-long class. Baron described the paper as a “thesis” or “senior thesis” in several interviews, and said that Obama spent a year working on it. Baron recalls that the topic was nuclear negotiations with the Soviet Union.

“My recollection is that the paper was an analysis of the evolution of the arms reduction negotiations between the Soviet Union and the United States,” Baron said in an e-mail. “At that time, a hot topic in foreign policy circles was finding a way in which each country could safely reduce the large arsenal of nuclear weapons pointed at the other … For U.S. policy makers in both political parties, the aim was not disarmament, but achieving deep reductions in the Soviet nuclear arsenal and keeping a substantial and permanent American advantage. As I remember it, the paper was about those negotiations, their tactics and chances for success. Barack got an A.”

Baron said that, even if he could find a copy of the paper, it would likely disappoint Obama’s critics. “The course was not a polemical course, it was a course in decision making and how decisions got made,” he said. “None of the papers in the class were controversial.”

No, it must have been some Muslim rant by Obama on how the mujaheddin need to rise up, thus triggering Osama's rise to prominence. He must have stolen the thesis to use as a blueprint for terror. Yes!!!

Really? An undergrad thesis paper?  Really??? WHO CARES??????

Isn't there a big event going on today?
When are you going to hunt for McCain's service records. He's only released excerpts from them, which stinks to heaven.

Oh, but  I forgot, this election is supposed to be a "referendum" on whether Obama is too stubborn or too wish-washy or too naive or too radical. Pay no attention to the old man behind the curtain spewing hateful crap about Obama wanting to lose wars. He's being groomed by the media to be the next Decider.
"And David Bossie, the former congressional investigator and “right-wing hit man,” as one newspaper described him, took out classified newspaper ads in Columbia University’s newspaper and the Chicago Tribune in March searching for the term paper ... written 25 years ago while a senior at Columbia University."
________

This is why we get so few good noble well qualified people running for President.  Because the American people allow our politics to be run by thugs like this that try to turn something written TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO into a scandal.

25 years ago Obama was 21.

There isn't a person in this world that is now in their late 40's early 50's that can't honestly and credibly say that they haven't matured in their thinking since being just 21. At 21 I did some really stupid things that I'd never even consider doing now at 36.

This pathetic nature of our politics needs to end.
the mccain camp is just waiting....for august 26th. on that day, all hell will break lose. mccain has been holding back on ALL of the dirt that can and will be used against obama. we will see wright brought up again (shows lack of judgement), ayers (shows anti american ideas), that father fellow (shows sexism)rezco (shows deceit and financial exploitation (through increased taxes?) and finally, will sum up the true ties to people who absolutely can not be trusted to do whats in the best interest of the USA. yep, the mighty will fall so everybody get prepared.

Yeah Brenda! Wait until they get a copy of this outrageous senior thesis on nuclear disarmament!
Oh boy this is gonna be the end of him! This proves just how desperate the GOP is to get anything on Obama.
Hey first read. Do you really find this newsworthy? If so I think it might be time to attend a refresher class on political journalism.

This is news because of what. I lost my senior thesis nor does the department at my college keep a copy. Nobody cares about this issue. Lets talk about McCain's gaffes that is more exciting and important.
One does have to remember that people do grow up and, that dreaded word, change once they leave college.  The relevancy of the paper would be questionable, albeit interesting.

I'm sure he used a fair number of pompous words like hence and ergo, just to feed the elitism sentiment against him.  Ha!
Yawn...if it's anything like his speeches it'll will be amount nothing substantial.

BTW I want to know how much of this trip is being paid for by the taxpayer.  His plane is a flying billboard.
This is how desparate the Republicans are?  Trying to find a paper written in college, give me a break, I don't even remember what I wrote about in college and even if I did it would have little to do with my viewpoints today.  If the GOP can't come up with anything better than this to throw at Obama they may as well throw in the towel.
Figures, leave it to the GOP to look to the past to try to trash a candidate.  Hopefully, most Americans are done with that kind of stupidity so we can concentrate on the future of our country ..... not something a candidate may or may not have said or done over 20 years ago.  I can't even believe this story warrants any ink.  Where's all the analysis and talk regarding the McCain/CBS interview?  Much more important to this campaign.
Grasping at straws...the right forgets they elected a man who was a drunk and cocaine fiend in his earlier days...some lame trestise from 25 years ago is hardly the stuff of legends..next
Does anyone have their college coursework from 25 years ago?  McCain's campaign staff are such idiots.  I finished grad school three years ago and I don't have any of my coursework.

Even if Obama wrote his thesis on nuke weapons disarming, that was 25 years ago and I am sure that the majority of us have changed our thoughts since 25 years ago.  I know I have, especially the last 7 1/2 years.
When I graduated college, I threw out all of those old papers, sold the books, and never looked back save for when I had to look something up in the workplace.  So I'm not surprised.

Unless there this was a doctrinal paper, odds are it's long gone to mold by now.  Too bad - it would be interesting just for the historical record should he win.
Lord knows that if the thesis is politically damaging to Obama, the media will sniff it out, plaster it across every headline, and keep the topic front and center thru at least 40 news cycles.

The media will do its darndest to make sure they give Obama plenty of bad press to counteract the terrible press that McCain has gotten this week. But that's OK, God is the greatest equalizer!

GOD BLESS SEN OBAMA AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
WTF, FR?  Who cares?  I doubt if I could produce my senior thesis paper either if you asked for it.  Give me a break!

"Actually, MI Chick, Don Imus still does the best interviews in the business.  The problem with David Gregory is that he is BORING!  Rachel Maddow is the best choice to host that 6 AM show.
As to RFD being corny?  Yeah, I guess.  I don't watch Imus for the channel it is on.  Though if you have horses like I do, it is valuable.
sotiredofignorance (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 11:38 AM)"

Sotired - maybe I need to give him more time.  I just hate those long breaks when he does his radio commercials and that comedian sidekick.  Let's just have Don and Charles with guests.  Much better program, IMHO.

Didn't know you had horses!  What kind?  Horses are such beautiful animals, but I know they are a lot of upkeep.

(It's so interesting finding out little tidbits about each other! )

Always enjoy your posts.  Have a great day!
My GOD - we are just trying everything we can to slow Barack Obama's momentum.

Never Happen!!!
Obama hasn't done anything as a legislator, now it appears he did nothing as a student.

Barack Obama - The Nothing Candidate
First Read...how low can you go?  Obama is giving a speech in Berlin and this is the only story you could find to post?  Losing cred everyday.  I can't find my thesis from 10 years ago at 31.  How about reporting that McCain has to fight for his own home state.

Obama '08...the only choice for me
See!  This can't be a coincidence.  It's a conspiracy.  We need to know more about his kindergarten activities as well...the formative years where he probably decided to destroy capitalism and ban bowling alleys.
It could be produced if it wasn't harmfull to him.
By the way if Obama becomes president, can CNN then have a special on What Its Like To Be White In America.
The smell of desparation has now become a stench. The train has left the station and the McCain train wreck has been left behind.
Let's look at McCain's school records  - oh - rigggghhhht - he was lucky to graduate at all ... was it 5th from the bottom of his class?

His advanced degree was in crashing planes.
Of course Andrea Mitchell will find a way to spin this into something demeaning for Obama.
Truly pathetic...not only the fact that this is the best the repugs have to offer (Since they cant seem to focus on issues), but because media outlets actually think this is news.  Must really suck to have to fill a 24 hour day with every little story, whether its newsworthy or not.
The republican are surely mad at him
Are you kidding... why is this even getting attention? If this counts as news why has no one talked about McCain and his first wife, or Cindy and her addiction to drugs, or even more substantive things like the fact that McCain has reversed almost everything he was once for as the maverick and has now become a right-wing political hack...

Pathetic... I guess by covering this story John McCain can no longer argue that Obama is getting only good press... what's up next back to the flag pin issue... or maybe some mythical story he wrote while in 1st grade about a flying horse...

So much for news... and oh ya by the way... I like how the media buried the story of McCain not paying taxes and how Cindy lobbied against M.A.D.D.... when is that going to get coverage... McCain said he wanted media coverage... go cover that...
hmmm, I think it's time to request a copy of McCoo-Coo's full military records.  I really hope Obama picks someone who served, so they can release their entire military record and hound the "OLD man yells at self" to release his!!
Here again GOP, (Garbage Obsessed Police), be careful what you go snooping around for.

Senator Obama's Professor confirmed three very compelling points about Barack's level of analytical thinking with regard to foreign affairs, (25 years ago when he was 21 years old) innocence, and work ethic by giving him an A!

I know it is not our style, but I wonder what McCain's Professors would have to say about him.

My bad. I forgot. We'd have to contact them through a medium at a seance.
What did john McCain write his senior thesis on?
The republicon key to victory is a 25 year old thesis written by Sen Obama. This may be the most retarded political plan I have ever heard of
Wow, as always, NBC is willing to take on the real tough issues facing Americans.

I'm curious about any colorings he might have done in elementary or, perhaps, his grades on spelling tests. It would be quite scandalous if he drew any pictures in art class that could come back to haunt him 30 years later. Maybe he was bad at spelling...how can he govern effectively if we don't know what his scores were!!!

Absolutely ridiculous that you would waste your time on something like this when when such trivial issues like Iraq, $4.00 gas, healthcare, foreclosures, foreign policy, etc. are out there.
ROTFLMAO!

While you guys are waiting for someone to unearth that thesis, can you ask John McCain which came first, the Anbar Awakening or the surge? Oh, and get him to explain what the surge is too please.

Thanks!

P.S. Desperate much? :)
Geez Louise, I don't have my thesis either--does that make me a commie too?
Do you think McCain has something he wrote when he was 21... oh by the way... when was that... did they have the printing press by then...
This is utter nonsense and I think I will unsubscribe to this First Read email system. I cannot believe that any of the First Read "journalists" even consider this news worthy. Neither Obama or McCain deserve this kind of nonsense. Shame on you.
MSNBC looking for a hit job.
I'm about 10 months older than Obama.  Is it shocking to anyone that I don't have any of my undergrad papers, or that the university I attended wouldn't have them either?

I didn't think so.
I went to university the in the same time frame as Obama. I still have my thesis. Was quite proud of it. Managed to keep it all these years and I have no problem producing it when required.
I wrote a lot of papers in college.  I didn't agree with all of them.  They were required assignments and I performed to get the "A," nothing more.  I find this highly amusing.
Yep, all the positive lovefest coverage of Obama... *shakes head*

Are we also looking for old college papers that McCain wrote?  I just don't see how this ends up high on the priority list of the stories the American public needs to know about.

On the next study on fairness of coverage, stories like this will be used to prove the media favors Obama, since it's a story about Obama and not McCain...
Get real MSNBC, Chuck and crew...undergrad thesis, over twenty years ago?.you guys are as pathetic as the McCain campaign...find something important and positive to write about!
What a joke.  Anyone want to make a bet that someone comes up with a copy that they found in the basement of Aunt Ethyls house.
Man a conspiracy missing thesis! Can we get any lower than this?  Just wondering.
Um... et tu, First Read?

Seriously, Chuck, you have to do better than this. This is our 'breaking news' section?

How is this news?
How insane!  Let's see mccain's thesis! Mccain is pitiful.  I don't care what, if anything, is in a 20 something year olds paper.  Views and insights change as the years go bye.  This is severe desperation on the part of Mccain. What a pathetic and pitiful bunch of reputkes!

Barack Obama - The Nothing Candidate"
Paul Pertone (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 1:51 PM)
****************************************************
Yeah, Paul.  Being President of the Harvard Law Review is an empty, meaningless title given to just any old student.  I'm pretty sure they just draw a name out of a hat.  Then even McCain would have a chance.  Talk about your Nothing Candidate - 894th out of 899 in his class.
Who cares about a 25 year old thesis, did you hear the speech he JUST gave in front of over 100,000 foreigners?  The world is thirsty for change.  Can you imagine 100,000 Americans showing up to hear Gordon or Merkel?

We are complete fools in this country if we do not seize this opportunity to restore our standing in the world.
I wrote a thesis on the Chicago Fire when I was in college...I don't have a copy and the college doesn't have a copy...I have been looking for it for 20 years.....I wanted a copy...Can you have your investigators find that one?
Instead of looking fir a college thesis, how about an examination of the McCain voting record for the last 26 years?

What's next, reviewing his Kindergarted report card to see if works and plays well with others?
This is sad and pathetic.  Deep down you must feel like less of a man for having to submit this as a piece of "investigative" work.

Pitiful.
