Questioning speech, forgetting Canada

Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2008 3:35 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
In his interview with NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, which will air on NBC's Nightly News tonight, McCain questions whether Obama should have given a speech in Berlin before becoming president.

"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain told O'Donnell. "But that's a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make."

However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada -- to the Economic Club of Canada -- in which he applauded NAFTA's successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain's trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign.

VIDEO: At a town hall in Pennsylvania, Republican presidential candidate John McCain says Obama's failure to understand the success of the surge in Iraq is a huge problem.

Other excerpts of O'Donnell's interview with McCain:
O'Donnell: Do you believe Obama really would be willing to lose the war in Iraq?
McCain: I think it’s very clear that he took the position that would enhance and maybe the reason why he won the nomination of his party. He doesn’t understand that the consequences of failure in Iraq would have disastrous consequences for America's national security. And he still doesn’t acknowledge that the surge succeeded, which is remarkable any rational observer who saw the conditions two years ago and sees them now.

O'Donnell: What is your best estimate in time for a significant drawdown [from Iraq]?
McCain: I'm sure by the end of my first term that we will be largely out of there.  But the point is, the reason that I cant set a specific date is because as Gen Petraeus says, we have to have the conditions on the ground.

Kelly O'Donnell?  Did she give full disclosure that she is McCain's campaign chair while Andrea Mitchell is his chief media surrogate?
McCain: "Whatever Petraeus says, I say. Whatever Petraeus thinks, I think. Whatever Obama says is, wrong, naive, evil and unpatriotic."
I think we have the drill down.
Well, McCain's trip to Canada was well over a month ago. How is he supposed to remember that?
pot. meet kettle.

the best part?  nobody actually knew that mccain left the country...and nobody cared.
Somebody needs to plug McSenile's brain in before he opens his mouth.
Senile old coot criticizes a speech the world was hungering to hear, while forgetting an admittedly forgettable speech he made in Canada.  Just more of the McSameOLDMcSameOLD.
MCCAIN QUESTIONS SPEECH, FORGETS CANADA

How could he forget the fact that he gave a speech in Canada barely a month ago?  Now THAT is scary!

Just another example in a long line of instances showing McCain is not fit to be president!!
My friends, I can't speak in specifics, beyond telling you to elect me.  It will take me until at least January to formulate a cohesive thought that doesn't wrap 'pretzel' like upon itself.

I thought he spoke in Columbia, too.
*Rubs eyes*

Is First Read calling John McCain out for hypocrisy?

Does the headline include the critical word FORGET?

Are you guys okay?

Where is the normal First Read staff?

What if Joe Scarborough hears about this?

"But the point is, the reason that I cant set a specific date is because as Gen Petraeus says, we have to have the conditions on the ground."

Now if only McCain or Bush would tell us, after six years, exactly what those conditions on the ground would look like.

Isn't the Iraqi government telling us to get out a ground condition?
Yeah, mcsame "forgets" his out of country campaign trips (Columbia, Canada, etc) but says he'd wait until elected to speak politically.
Where's that oldtimer's pill ?
Claen up on aisle 4...
Where was O'Donnell's direct question to McCain about his speech in Canada when McCain criticized Obama for giving a speech in Germany. Did O'Donnell directly confront Mccain with that question? And if not why not? Another example of giving McCain a pass MSNBC. Frankly, I think some in the media (perhaps especially females)are afraid of McCain and his temper and therefore do not confront him as they would Obama.
"Disastrous consequences for America's national security"?  How about 4,000 lives lost in a war based on lies and incompetence?  How about nearly $1trillion in debt and taxpayers' money spent to protect us from nonexistent WMD?  How about tens of thousands wounded and maimed?  How about billions given to politically connected contractors and mercenaries?  Who is John McCain to lecture anybody about disastrous policies in Iraq?
O'Donnell: ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

McCain:  Surge, surged, surging, insurgent, counterinsurgent, pre-surge, post-surge, surgeon general, Serge from the movie "Beverley Hills Cop",
SSSSUUUUUUUUUURRRRRGE!!
Another case of the media giving John McCain a pass.  Did Kelly O'Donnell ask John McCain about his speech in Canada?  (Or, how about his trip to South America?)
Any candidate who states that his opponent would rather lose a war to attain office isn't fit to hold office.
two things:

1) didn't McCain also go to the UK to raise funds and give speeches this Spring?

2) Why doesn't the press take McCain to task for his repeated claim that Obama denies the surge has worked?  Obama admits that the surge is part of the reason for an improved Iraq everyday.....
Later today, Obama will sit down with Katie Couric and recite the 57 states. Preview: Canada is one of those states.
To funny...if it wasn't so scary!!!
McCain forgets Canada...think about it....

Best estimate in time for a drawdown in Iraq...General Petraeus hasn't decided as yet.  THAT's not the thinking of a POTUS or CIC. The grumpy old man's thinking is impaired. McCain has disqualified himself to be POTUS. There is no comparison between the two candidates.  John belongs riding in a golf cart with Bush 41.  Not engaging in world issues.
wow, what a lame duck

it's actually sad, really
Don't forget about that rally he held in Czechoslovakia.
And with all the media coverage, and all of McCains mistakes, Obama is only tied with McCain. Hill-ari-ous.
However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada -- to the Economic Club of Canada --
-----------------------------------------------

McCain follows the Law of the Hypocrite: "Do as I say, not as I do."

And when is SOMEONE going to ask McCain to admit he was wrong to push for the Iraq war in the first place?

I'm tired of seeing the corporate media pundits all braying like donkeys that Obama must acknowledge that the "surge" is succeeding and that he was mistaken not to support it, even though there was no surge into Al Anbar Province, where the Sunni Awakening took form. But logic isn't exactly the corporate media's strong point.
Its really reached the point of being comical. McCain should just be glad all this is really nothing more than dress rehearsal until after Labor Day.

If he doesn't find his head, I can just see millions of voters listening to this stuff and just staring with the mouths hanging open.
You can't put up an legit and honest run down of Obama's speech in Berlin?  You have three puff pieces that have absolutely no substance instead?  Here goes First Read, down the tubes.  I stopped coming here regularly a few weeks ago because topics were slanted, watered down and mundane.  Now I can't even get analysis on the biggest political happening of the day from you guys.  Evidently the media shift to ignore good things on the Dem side and at the same time ignore bad things on the Repub side is starting to happen.  It is de ja vu 2004 all over again.  This voter is absolutely sick of it!  People are going to start realizing what corporate media slaves you all are.
CAUGHT!

Thank you First Read for pointing out McCain's hypocrisy. However, where was O'Donnell's follow-up question?

We would have liked to seen another, 'Like Sand Through The Hour Glass, These Are The Stares Of Our Lives', moment from McCain!
Obama looked perplexed when someone showed him Arkansas on the map. He thought it bordered Illinois.
Well...why didn't Kelly remind him of Canada? McLame didn't answer the question either.

Why won't MSNBC, NBC or the MSM acknowledge what Obama really said about the surge. He did not say it did not work. Please show his answer to that question in it's entirity and report it as so.

John McLame: The American people will make that judgement and you sir, can finally retire in full.
You know it is scary to me that people still want him for president. He is making a fool of himself and his knowledge of Iraq and people still like McCain. What's this about. Obama should be 20 points up in the polls.
Forgetting Canada. An attempt by McCain to criticize Obama while not wanting to talk about his speech in Canada. The reason is obvious. Number attending speech by McCain in Canada - 150 (25 awake and 150 asleep) . Number attending speech by Obama in Germany - 200,000 (all 200,000 wide awake).
When was the last time McCain spoke in front of 100,000 people???? Oh, yeah......never. He's having trouble getting volunteers for the Convention!
If I ever ended up meeting McCain I would have to throw-up.  The guy goes to Canada gives a speech, screams Obama hasn't gone over seas and then when Obama does, McCain throws a temper tantrum.  What an old geezer.  I'm telling you the guy is nuts, crazy, and so darn stupid it is amazing.  Seriously did anyone think there was anyone in America that could make Bush look half way smart?  McCain has accomplished it.
There is one more John McCain gaffe that the media missed from the now famous CBS interview with Katie Couric.
This is the same interview in which McCain claimed the surge led to the Anbar Awakening, which is demonstrably false. But watch below for another gaffe when McCain says Iraq was the first major conflict after 9/11.
Was Afghanistan not major enough for him? It almost reminds you of when Don Rumsfeld was not impressed with invading Afghanistan because it did not provide a rich enough target environment. He needed something more major.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain said..

However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada, to the Economic Club of Canada -- in which he applauded NAFTA's successes.

……………………………………………………………………………………
…and to top it off, he again accused Obama of treason, for wanting to withdraw our troops from Iraq.  If the surge (escalation of troops) was as successful as McCain states, why have we not drawn down our troops? Yesterday, he said the people of Iraq were living almost normal lives.  If everything is almost normal, why are there more troops in Iraq now than before the surge?

As an American I can tell you for sure that the rest of the World absolutely appreciates Obama not only speaking to his own country but including others in what he sees as a change campaign.
I appreciate Obama doing what no one else has done for a long long time.  Given voice to not just our views on foreign soil but also validating that others are striving to do better and that we all need to come together on tough issues and decisions that should be made for the global condition.
Thankyou Barack Obama.  You have inspired me and my children.
IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT SEN. OBAMA RECOGNIZES THAT GENERAL PATRAES IS NOT PRESIDENT.  IRAQ IS JUST ONE PIECE OF THE GOBAL CONCERNS THAT THE US PRESIDENT HAS TO FACTOR IN.  IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT SEN. OBAMA WILL NOT LET THE GENERAL MAKE DECISIONS THAT SHOULD BE MADE BY THE PRESIDENT, THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT  YOU KNOW WEIGHING EVERYTHING THAT AFFECT WE THE PEOPLE

SEN. MCCAIN WAS PANDERING TO CANADA AND WE REMEMBER IT WELL PROMISING THAT TRADE DEFFICIENCIES WOULD NOT CHANGE, THAT AMERICANS WOULD CONTINUE TO GET THE SHAFT, HOW CAN WE FORGET.

WHAT A WHINER, WHINER AND SOMEONE WHO HAS BECOME TO REEL ENTITLED. THAT STUNT PHOTO OP IN THE GROCERY STORE IN THE CHEESE WAS JUST LAUGHABLE.  MANY WOULD BE WILLING TO BET THAT THIS SUPER RICH MCCAIN MARRIED TO THE BEER HIERESS HAS NEVER BEEN IN THE GROCERY STORE.  WHY WOULD HE AND WE WOULD NOT EXPECT HIM TO.  BUT WE DO EXPECT OUR PRESIDENT OR SOMEONE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT TO UNDERSTAND THE ECONOMY WHICH SEN. MC CAIN CLEARLY DOESN'T.

MCCAIN SPENDS HIS DAYS BASHING SEN. OBAMA, IGNORES THE RECESSION AND THE SUFFERING OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

SEN MC CAIN CHOSE PHIL GRAM THE VERY PERSON WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS (ENRONLOOPE HOLE, THE SUBPRIME MORTGAGE CRISIS, THE CALIFORNIA ELECTRICITY CRISIS BY PUTTING THROUGH LEGISLATION FOR DEREGULATION, YOU KNOW "NO OVERSIGHT" AND RESULTED IN WE THE PEOPLE BEING SCREWED TO THE TUNE OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ALL FOR THE RICH.  YOU KNOW THE ENRON EMPLOYEES WHO LOST HOMES, JOBS, RETIREMENT, SAVINGS, THEY WERE BAMBOOZELED, TRICKED BY GRAMM

AND MCCAIN WANTS WE THE PEOPLE TO TRUST HIM?  WHEN A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BRINGS THE VERY PEOPLE WHO SHAFTED THEM TO THE TABLE TO RUN HIS CAMPAIGN AND BE HIS TOP ADVISOR HE CAN EXPECT TO LOOSE COME NOVEMBER

NO WE ARE SUPPOSE TO TRUST PHIL GRAM TO FIX WHAT HE BROKE?  WE ARE MUCH SMARTER THAN THAT
Please tell me Ms. O'Donnell called him out on that Canadian thing...?

...and just what did McCheese do in Colombia? Pick coffee with Juan Valdez?

McCain makes campaign speech in CANADA!!!!!!
**********************************************

Yep, we see the headline here...But will we see it on TONGIHT'S NETWORK NEWS???????

================================================
Obama better respond to McCain's constant rant that he wants to lose the war...he should tell him that there is no "war", in that Congress never declared one formally, there is no "war" anymore to the extent there was one because we succeeded in ousting Saddam and installing a "democracy", there is no "war" because the insurgency is practically done with; there is no "war" but instead only the typical middle-eastern occasional suicide bomber and p-o'd people with their IED's; there is no war and we are done because the Iraqi security forces can take care of what's left over and the Iraq gov't wants us out.

But then again, McCain was a POW and thinks with POW mentality - he wants to win a war at any cost even if the war is over or there is none to fight!

McCain=McInsane!
Nashville_fan "Does the headline include the critical word FORGET?"
---------------------------------------------------

Yes, I almost didn't notice the headline. FirstRead should be commended when they provide some balanced coverage of McCain. Too bad it doesn't happen more often.
Now that is the height of hypocrisy.  What is truely sad is not that he forgot his speech in Canada, but that knew he gave a speech in Canada and still tried to blame Obama.  He knows he's lying and does it anyway!  He knows people only read the first interview, not the follow up of his lies.
He forgot he gave a speech in Canada....ATTACKING Obama...and stressing his full support of NAFTA. You can't make this stuff up. Another cancelled afternoon press conference perhaps?
*************************NBC*************************

Could we please have a video mantage of McCain's stance on when we'll leave Iraq???  ....NOW McC is saying that we'll be out by the 2012????

And you could you please ask him to **define** 'success'--and not just let him get away with inferring that he's waiting to hear that definition from Gen Petraeus?

*************************NBC*************************
I think it is ironic that your news paper feels they have to write 10 articles about Obama and 1 about McCain.

I think it is also ironic that other news papers are taking note of the general public making statements about too many Obama articles - which shows you are trying to brain wash U.S. citizens into thinking Obama is THE ONE; however, you are ignoring the general public.

Oh, by the way, Obama is the PRESUMPTIVE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE.  He will not be nominated until the convention.

Now with that in mind  --  this shows how prejudice your newspaper really is.  Obama is not the nominated Democratic candicate.  The Democrats have not have their convention.

Uh. What was that I heard from you?????????????  Don't put this out on the blog?

Yeah, I guess not as you are the most unethical, brain washing news paper I have ever seen.

PhD
There's only 24 hours in a day? Really? Not 27?
Fellow posters,

Isn't it telling that the significance of the Anwar Awakening, and the standing down of al Sadr's people, putting repub talking points about 'the surge' into their proper perspective, came from Senator Obama, and not the media?
This guy is scary incompetent.  Why is the media afraid to bring up his inconsistencies to his face?  I'm starting to think McCain would be even worse than Bush.  He's clearly just as ignorant.
I'm getting so sick of the Republicons.

If Obama had visited the hospital troops he'd be critisized for politicizing the military and trying to buy their support.

If he doesn't go he gets critisized for not supporting them.

The Republicons only make up lies and attacks instead of laying out good policies.  Oh, that's right, they have no good policies and they don't want the brainwashed masses to see that they are trying to take over the country just like the Nazi's did in Germany and Putin/Medvedev are doing in Russia.

They take over the media (Fox, WSJ, etc), have control of the corporations, take away liberties and grant themselves more power, stack the government and courts with loyalists, keep the masses in poverty and uneducated.

The Republicon politicians being against abortion isn't a value they have... it's an election issue. They don't want women to have reproductive rights or contraception, they want them pregnant. I guess people forget that Hitler demanded women have more children to help the country.  More soldiers!

Small government?  Hah.  Everything is run by corporate contractors that fund their campaigns.  War?  Just a means to speed up bleeding of the Treasury.  Missing billions... Swiss Bank accounts, you know... like UBS where Phil Gramm works.  Ever wonder why no one looks into where those billions went?
I see that some here are wondering about McCain's assertion that he would wait to speak outside of the country until after he became President, based on recent trips to other countries.  Let me break it down in McCainese for ya:

Canada = Northern North Dakota
Mexico = Southern South Texas
Colombia = Don't we have a district there?

See, no contradiction here.  Move along, kids.

And while you're at it, get your Hope off my lawn.
Is Petraues commander in chief?
I second jbentley and would add that the only consequences Mccain and the republicans are afraid of is not being able to get their hands on the oil fields of Iraq.

The republicans just shut down an attempt by democrats to open our surplus oil reserves in an attempt to lower gas prices.  The republicans stopped it- don't forget that in November.  It is not about supply/demand, it is about speculation.  What in the name of heaven will happen to us with Phil Gramm allowed to be in the cabinet of the White House.  Oh, my!  I shudder!
AND, once again, Gen. Patraeus seems to calling all shots with the president being led by the nose.
